another winter storm is moving in. what this means for your weekend plans and just how much snow we might see. news 4 at 4 starts now. and good evening. thanks for joining us. i am joe hart. >> i am shelby sheehan. >> a nice quiet couple of days. that is changing. the weather is coming back in. >> that's right. a storm is brewing. we will be seeing snow up in the mountains, maybe down to the valley floor possibly by tomorrow. chief meteorologist collin jackson joins us. colin, we hear there is reports of snow coming down now? >> on parts of interstate 80. most of it has been wet. it is turning to snow and that means colder air is moving in. if you have to go over the hill or over i-80, please you're gonna need chains. trucks are already required to

he is stumping for his wife democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton. news 4's van tieu tells us had his visit. >> reporter: clinton is spending a full day in nevada. he has campaign stops in las vegas and reno today. timing is key here. we are just about less than 30 days away from the nevada caucuses. the first in the west. so all eyes will be on the silver state. now, the clintons have been campaigning aggressively this week. earlier this week mr. clinton was in new hampshire where he told voters that the clinton campaign is at a home field disadvantage in new hampshire, which is next door to bernie sanders' home state of vermont. most recent polling has shown clinton trailing sanders in new hampshire while holding a slim lead in iowa. mrs. clinton is still stumping in new hampshire today. so this visit in nevada important for the clinton campaign. a head start, if you will. now, the former president is

and girls club on foster drive, scheduled to speak just a little bit after 8:00. doors will open at 7:30. so the people are also asked to rsvp on hillary clinton.com. it will be on a first come, first serve basis here. reporting live in reno, van tieu, news 4. new this afternoon at four nevada's public utilities commission is asked to reconsidering its decision doing away with energy savings problems. in december they approved cuts to the energy efficiency budget for nevada's utilities companies here in the state. now, las vegas will feel the impact this year. northern nevada might feel it more next year. among other things, the cuts will eliminate the l.e.d. light reimbursement program. that lighting rebate is so popular, the puc indicates the nv energy discounted millions of lights and suggests the program might be possibly abused. >> one study suggested that

economic loss of $55 million because we are gonna be spending more for energy than we would have had these programs been kept into place. and that's the wrong direction. >> and coming up tonight at five, news 4's terri hendry will have more on other cuts as well as requests for the puc to reconsider. another solar company is leaving the silver state following the growing trend set by other solar companies. premiere solar solutions is closing its doors in henderson in response to bill increases for solar customers. according to the las vegas sun, the company announced it laid off 66 people and was heading to a state with more favorable policies. national solar companies, solar city and sunrun cited the same reason in their decision to leave when they halted sales in nevada laying off more than 650 employees. the investigation continues following a stabbing earlier today. the incident occurred near 4th street and lake street

and police and fire were on the street. the nature of the injuries are not immediately known. we have been trying to get some information from reno police about this today. we will continue to keep you updated on air and online at mynews4.com as soon as we are able to get more information about what happened. sparks police are looking for three suspects after a home invasion left two people hospitalized on wednesday. officials tell us the men broke into a home on the 2200 block of 18th street before 8:00 that night. and that's when they were armed with handguns and they ordered the man and woman inside to lay on the floor. police say the male victim was hit in the head by one of the suspects and woman who is pregnant was being treated for pregnancy-related stress resulting from the incident. now, police are looking for a dark car, possibly a four-door sedan reported leaving the area. two of the suspects are described as wearing black clothing, including hooded sweatshirts, and the third is reportedly wearing all grey

at the least at the time of this incident. secret witness is offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those involved. give them a call if you have any information. a nevada-based company is relocating their headquarters and consolidating their current warehouses. its he logistics is moving to sparks at the end of the month and hopes to be set up by spring of this year. the company is the largest logistics company in the silver state and services other companies all over the u.s. efficiency this is an exciting time for businesses in northern nevada and they are happy to be a part of the business boom. fire regardless of what's going on in the world economic conditions and what's going on in the rest of the nation. northern nevada is on fire. it's fun to be a part of it. >> its logistics hopes to hire year. to learn more about job

wheel head to our new and improved website mynews4.com. we have sad news to report this afternoon. former nevada first district court judge michael fondi has died. according to go fits henry's funeral home he passed away earlier this morning am he was 78 years old. care when he died. no funeral arrangements have been made or announced at this time. we will let you know as soon as we get more information on that. this weekend for a deputy sheriff and his daughter who were killed last thanksgiving. michael harder and his family were driving on state route [ inaudible ] when their truck hit black ice and slid. the eureka county deputy sheriff and his daughter were killed in that crash. now, michael's [ inaudible ] survived. she was hospitalized for a month. she received major injuries, including more than 20 fractures.

teasing their fans about the new to go pacts on facebook wednesday. researchers at the university of minnesota are working on a heart valve made of tissue that grows with the body and that could mean fewer surgeries for young patients with heart issues. adrian broadus explains. >> reporter: in 17 years, anders jensen has had four surgeries on his heart. that's him recovering in 2008. his father, mark, hopes no child has to hurt like his son. >> four open heart surgeries on his valves. so it's a lesson -- any one of these would be a horrific thing. >> reporter: thanks to research at the university of minnesota, this tiny device could have a big impact on children born with heart defects like anders. >> so our goal is to create an

>> reporter: professor bob trinquillo, they are growing tubes of tissue that could replace a defective heart valve in a young child. >> living tissue that can heal itself, repair itself, and in this case for pediatric i can patients, grow with the patient. >> reporter: if approved by the fda, it could reduce the number of surgeries children face. >> nothing worse than seeing your son or daughter have to go through surgeries like that. to lessen the number that they have would be a really wonderful thing for people around the world. >> so how soon could could see something like this on the market? the professor plans to -- in the fda in the coming weeks. time to talk weather and collin jackson is over in the weather center to talk about this storm moving in. already, collin, some areas in the higher elevations are seeing some snow? >> yep. you know what? it's a good thing. we need the snow. we need the rain.

if you do not have to travel over the hill or over the pass, tomorrow. then to see how the conditions are. radar. this is the movement of the storm from the southwest. we don't have much to report yet. a few sprinkles today and that's about it. our next storm is now, and we have a few watches and warnings up. the foothills. on this side of the crest, meaning you could see one to three inches above 5,000 feet. the winter storm warning is for the sierra and that is in effect to, well, tomorrow at 4:00. they are expecting one to two feet of snow above 7,000 feet. at the lake level four to eight inches is possible. again will we see something on the valley floor? it's a possibility we might get a dusting. overall that snow level's gonna drop to 4,000 feet. maybe a little higher by the time we get to saturday morning. 58 was the high today. how crazy is that? 12 degrees above average.

south were affecting our weather today. we are now 50. look at the wind. south at 24 and gusty beyond that. other current numbers look like that. not much change from yesterday. low 40s to 50 degrees and the winds all coming in from the south pretty much all coming in from the south at 24, 14 miles per hour depending upon where you are. if you don't have a weather gauge at your stoushing -- at your site, you know it's gonna be windy tonight. snow levels. now talk about the future. where we go from here. here is the scene as of now at 5:00. the storm kinda meanders and stays on the western side of the crest. as we advance to five, four in the morning overnight we could see a light dusting of snow along 395 and in the north sections of town and west towards the foothills. so keep that in mind if you have travel plans. here's the scene at six in the morning. still chances of snow. when we zoom out we even have chances of snow lingering in the

all the way through sunday morning at six. so that's gonna be an interesting next 24 to 48 hours. please drive carefully. 36 tonight in reno. rain chance 80%. it could be heavier overnight. it's going to be a rain, snow, slushy winds with southwest winds at 15 to 25 miles per hour. tomorrow's high 46. there is that 80% chance of rain-snow mix continuing with those gusty southerly winds. i will step out of the way because i don't like standing in front of your cam when i am talking about temperatures. overnight lows, elko 36, a high of 37. south winds tomorrow 10 to 15 miles per hour with a rain-snow mix. it's about a 60 to 70% chance for you. winnemucca 42. 33 the low. ridge port 27, 38 with a rain-snow mix tonight into saturday morning and afternoon. southwest winds to south at 15 to 20 the five miles per hour. other cities we're right here

busy time for you. dress re-- dress rehearsal last night. what is this about? >> we take last year's news. we have someone in charge of clippings out of the paper. we run with that. it starts about the end of august, beginning of september. and we have sort of wine filled meetings. creative ideas bouncing around. probably my favorite part. >> this is an all volunteer effort? >> yes. >> there is a lot of talent involved with these folks? >> thank you. and we brought you in and you're certainly talented. >> i don't know what i'm doing there. it's interesting to see, you know, the creativity, the humor. >> yes. >> it's an art. >> yeah, we are all a little bit nuts and most of us are hams. it. >> it seems there is plenty of material to work with. >> legislature gives us plenty of fodder. the school board has been on the block a few times.
