iowa caucuses just a few weeks away. and two run from police but it doesn't take long before they call for help after they experience the sierra. good sunday evening and thanks for joining us on news 4 at 11:00. i'm olivia dejaneiro. police arrested austin miller when he showed a black handgun on . miller ran from them but they were able to arrest him. they did find his handgun near

stole from both of those stores. new information to tell you about in the wednesday night shooting that sent one man to the hospital. police have made a third arrest in connection with an armed robbery. police say they arrested joshua canada with one incident. the wednesday night shooting in northwest reno happened near a vacant apartment building. a man and woman met up with two other people and were walking on suttro. two additional suspects suspects ran up and tried to steal from them. all four suspects ran into a near by apartment. and when police searched that apartment, they found the victim's paraphernalia.

suspects, but there may be two additional suspects. and three inmates are all accused of violent crimes. the three men escaped sometime early from the central men's vail. 40miles southeast of l. a. authorities say the inmates cut through steel bars, went through the roof of the jail they know repelled down the wall using sheets. they say id was an elaborate plan that may have involved creating a jail disturbance. but it's unclear if they had outside help. >> based on the information and evidence that has been collected so far. this was clearly a well thought out and planned escape. it's unknown but it could have taken them weeks, or even months to prepare. >> reporter: two of the escapees have been charged with murder. the other inmate charged with kidnapping. it's the first escape at that jail in at least 20 years. and a chase in the sierra

after two fugitives try to escape from the law nearly die in freezing condition. the two men were hiding in a wooded area of el dorado county when they had no choice but to call 911. mike lawry reports. in the high sierra near keibers along highway 60 it started with a traffic stop for swerving. but then. >> two no occupants in the vehicle jumped out of the car and took off running. >> reporter: derek diano and tristan croslan ran from police. >> reporter: in addition to the firearm there was at least three different types of controlled narcotics in the vehicle. meth, heroin, marijuana. >> reporter: the duo dashed down a canyon and crossed over the south fork of the american river.

a law enforcement warning to surrender with a winter storm in full force. the fugitives were freezing and called 911 begging to be arrested. search and rescue teams from the el dorado sheriff's office quickly join the hunt. >> we knew based on the weather conditions that yes there's a very high possibility they would not survive very long. >> reporter: on saturday morning the s.w.a.t. found them and they were transported across the river to awaiting ambulance for treatment. >> the two were happy to two to jail because they were going to be dry and warm. >> reporter: i can't imagine what it must have felt out in

the 6.8 quake struck 160 miles southwest of anchorage. but it was closer felt in the city. about 30 homes were evacuated after a gas leak was reported and some 5,000 people lost power. but, there have been no reports of injury. more than a thousand staff and students can return to pike school tomorrow. washo county school officials say that a pipe broke while they were on break. crews had to replace floors and repaint walls in the building. the iowa caucuses are a little more than a week away. and the candidates are working

mt. rose ski tahoe includes 1,200 skiable acres. and some good news for drivers, the price of gas has dropped another 14-cents in the past two weeks. the national average today is below $2 at $1.91 for a gallon of regular. industry analysts say this is the cheapest gas has been in seven years. but the recent decline may come to an end as crude oil prices continue to decrease. the average price of diesel is $2.19 a gallon which has dropped 12-cents in the past week. compared that to our local prices, the average price for a gallon of regular is $2.34. according to the lowest website, the lowest price in reno is 2.45. that's down in carson city.

snow is falling across the region. we have snow showers, i knew i was going to say flowers. i said that earlier today. snow showers up in truckee and rain down in the valley floor. most of the valley floor is dry right now. nothing is really falling except for reno. there are some rain showers. we'll be watching those storms to dissipate pretty quickly tonight. it's not too much of a powerful storm. we have this high pressure starting to build and those winds shifting to come out of the north. that's going to take all this moisture in the pacific and going to move it up and around shifting. we're going to be watching for the northern storm system in the central of the pacific. look at this long bands of moisture associated with it. weekend. so if you are planning to travel aover the hill, be weary of some chain controls, travel delays for next weekend. right now in reno39 degrees with easterly winds blowing at 5 miles per hour.

gone up in the past couple of hours 17% as we do see moisture impacting the area. current temperature around the area. we're watching for temperatures to be in the mid-30s. 36 in carson city, and 30 degrees oututin truckee. so dropping below freezing tonight with fairly calm winds almost everywhere. a nice change than what we've seen for the last couple of days. putting your futurecast in motion. what we're watching for here is cloud cover. clouds impacting your day on monday. and clearing by 5:00 p.m. into your day on tuesday. that's going to be your story for the rest of the week. 30degrees tonight with that 40% chance of rain impacting the viewing area. those clouds will clear with those westerly winds 5 miles per hour. and then moving in tomorrow, we see the winds shifting to the east. with average temperatures reaching 47 degrees and lots of sunshine by the middle of the day into the afternoon. moving across the state, we are watching for temperatures to get pretty chilly out in the

50degrees for elkwood. 13degrees in eureka. warming up to the 30s for the daytime tomorrow with lots of sunshine in the forecast. down in the eastern sierra, we're watching for lingering snow and rain tonight. but mostly clear for your day tomorrow with daytime highs pushing to the upper 40s. 48degrees in fallon. 48degrees in love lock. carson staying colder tonight. dropping right below freezing 27 degrees. and mostly below freezing for the rest of that area. with a few lingering snow and rain showers possible. and then warming up tomorrow into the mid-40s and upper 40s. sunshine for most of the day with those easterly winds around 9 miles per hour. up at the lake a little bit of a cooler story but that's not going to stay cool for much longer. we're going to be watching those temperatures increase into the 50s later this week. but for tomorrow, only 38 degrees for the most part. 38 in kings beach.

and 28 degrees in glen brook with mostly sunshine. 44 for your daytime high tomorrow. and then overnight tonight dropping below freezing. but lots of sunshine in the forecast for the next seven days. down in the valley floor those winds are going to shift to the east by the afternoon. sun will pick up and then those temperatures are going to push to the upper 40s. take a look at these seven day numbers we're watching for those 50 degrees temperatures to hit midweek. we're tracking another snowstorm to hit this weekend. giana. >> well, at the beginning of sunday, super bowl l was two games away from being set. now both games are over and two teams have secured their spot in the big show. let's go to denver to see who won the afc championship game between the broncos and the patriots. we'll start off first quarter, broncos first drive of the game and peyton manning finds owen daniels in the middle for the first of the game.
