welcome to news 4 at 4. >> let's get a check on the forecast with collin jackson. things cleared up nicely today. >> starting off dreary, especially for moon of course -- be especially for this afternoon, of course. >> >> we have more weather on the way right now. it's a pretty quiet afternoon and evening. we are live at westlake. west shore of lake tahoe, rather. it's a nice scene as the sun starts to set. overnight lows below zero in our area and lake tahoe. doppler radar quiet as well. looking for rain. we won't have to go far to find rain friday. more on that in a second. for now high pressure dominates the west coast. we will warm up a little bit above average through the week and then you can see some storms starting to gear up for another friday night arrival into saturday and sunday. our current numbers are nice. we are in the upper 40s in the

it's not that bad at truckee, either. it's 39. same thing for south lake tahoe. 54 just to our northeast. so air quality, it's a moderate category tomorrow. unfortunately, that will also get worse as we advance to our threat thursday and improve. guys, back to you. >> thanks. students are back in the classroom today at one washoe county school. it comes two weeks after the rest of the district returned back from winter break. a water pipe at pine middle school malfunctioned on christmas eve and destroyed the building's ground level. ryan kern takes us inside the school where students and teachers are glad to be back today. >> reporter: a school is back in session just a couple weeks behind schedule. >> school is like the usual routine. >> it's pretty different. you know, it's still the same school that i like. >> reporter: pine middle school re-opened monday morning after a month-long restoration project. >> many of the teachers on the first floor lost a lot of their

>> reporter: over winter break maintenance officials say a water pipe detached above the cafeteria flooding and destroying 95% of the first floor. one month and $1 million in work later, classrooms are restored and food is ready to be served. >> they work non-stop to get the school prepared. we want to minimize the amount of time that students were out of school. >> reporter: that time was two weeks in all. some stayed at home. others spent their days at the boys and girls club of truckee meadows. every student had work online to finish, which is one of the ways they filled their time. >> i fell behind and needed to catch up doing extra homework. >> i was mostly at my house playing video games or at my friends house. >> reporter: crews discovered asbestos in the building, adding another element to the project. >> we need to follow bay bait. procedures. >> reporter: the walls and floors were tested making sure asbestos fibers went undisturbed while the school was rebuilt. >> they have a third-party

you can't say it's a district employee that might be -- no, this is a third-party group. >> reporter: demolition and construction followed. only the gym is left and the school district hopes to put new floor in there soon and put this project fully behind them. >> of course, the kids are happy to be back. they are with their friends. they are learning. they are with their teachers. they are back to their routine. >> good to see. insurance evaluators are still inspecting the pipe that started this. the funding for this project still up in the air at this point. the rooftop solar industry [ inaudible ] fight over new rates it to the voters. members of a newly formed group filed a referendum petition with nevada secretary's office this morning. it seeks to repeal the new solar rate structure imposed by the public utilities commission in september.

region, is it capable of handling one? the building officials say they are looking to do seismic upgrades on buildings they manage. they are generally not concerned in the reno-sparks or washoe county areas when it comes to infrastructure safety if a large quake were to hit. still officials say the county code. >> wash other county currently follows the international building code. we are under the 2012 international building code. that puts us in a design seismic design category of d2 similar that the bay area. >> he says even though nevada is the third most seismically active state in the country, earthquakes are not the only natural occurrence that the county's buildings are prepared for. we will tell you what those other issues are coming up tonight at five. two nurses from hong kong are visiting to train to bring skills back to their country. today they specifically trained

how to treat patients while in the aircraft. this training is considered the gold standard in improving advanced critical medical care for trauma patients during transport. for the fifth year, in january nurses have been sent to the biggest little city so learn about aircraft transport as well as other medical practices inside the er. >> so they will be learning about aviation. they will be learning about weather constraints. they will be learning about how we take care of patients in the united states pre-hospitally. how we take the intensive care to the patient sometimes. >> the nurses will also train with the ground ambulances and learn advanced skills that medical professionals practice every daylin leach. police arrested a 20-year-old man early yesterday morning when they found him leaving the scene of his alleged second armed robbery of the same daylin leach.

austin miller showed a black handgun at the am/pm and demanded money. officers searching for the suspect in the first robbery attempted to stop miller as he 11th a 7-eleven on south wells avenue where he reportedly committed another robbery. they were able to track him down and arrest him. they found him and found his handgun nearby as well as some stolen property. and the man is under arrest this afternoon accused of stabbing a man at a reno casino. authorities say 34-year-old adam jay gardner is facing charges of robbery and battery with a deadly weapon. according to police, officers were called to the atlantis around 2:15 saturday afternoon about a fight and stabbing in the parking lot. police say casino security saw the incident and detained gardner until police officers could arrive on scene. the video shows the fight starting after gardner tried to steal a man's watch and stabbed him in the forearm after he tried to get it back.

hospital with non-life threatening injuries. investigators also arrested 32-year-old brandy murrayen unrelated -- on unrelated charges. a story we brought you last week. police made a third arrest in connection to an armed robbery and shooting that sent a man to the hospital. officers arrested 25-year-old joshua canada. he faces charges of robbery with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit an armed robbery. the wednesday night shooting in northeast reno happened nearing a vacant apartment building. police a man and woman met up with two other people and were walking. police say two additional suspects tried to rob them. the man tried to stop it. he was shot and has non-life threatening injuries. all four suspects ran into a nearby apartment. and when police searched that apartment they found the victim as belongings. they also found guns and drug paraphernalia. they have arrested two other potential suspects you see here. they say there may be two more

four extra days to file this year. the deadline has been moved to april the 18th. that's because it's a leap year and there will be a february 29th. plus, friday the 15th is a holiday in washington, d.c. where the irs is headquartered. something else different this year are the 1095 forms what you will have to file describing where you purchased your health insurance. the penalty for not having health insurance goes up considerably to $325 or 2% of taxable income, whichever is greater. also going up is the number of taxpayers who file electronically, which means those two a refund that, by the way, averaged $2,797 this year will get them quicker. another reason to file quickly though. do it before an identity thief does. the irs says cyber crooks are as

security numbers and filing false claims where they, not you, pocket the refund. chris clackum, nbc news. as we said, things have cleared up nicely out there on this monday and sounds like another storm to talk about that's not too far off. let's check in with colin. how is it going, colin? >> this is my second week at work and i am thinking is it every week this winter that we get a storm. we have another one coming in. what a gorgeous shot of the setting sun to the west. more snow on the way saturday. wash your car. enjoy the daylin leach day today. a ridge of high pressure setting up. storms out to the west. and i mean western pacific. they are going to gear up and move our way by the time we get to roughly friday afternoon and that's when all the changes arrive. it's a dry week.

more snow for the sierra and you, the skiers and snowboarders another foot on the way. 49 was the high today. you know what? not bad for the coast. temperatures in san francisco 58 to 62 at monterey. that's nice. and we're at 48 as of four. relative humidity is 50%. and it's dry air, of course. but it's the cooler. and that means the overnight lows will likely dip to just at the freezing mark if not below. wind speeds dead calm across our area and it will stay that way for tonight as wl. is so this high pressure cell means what? we have not to show you coming at us at all the way through, well, the next three or four days. future clouds and radar, sprinkles for the north coast. that's it. it remains really, really quiet all the way through all of tuesday, maybe some passing clouds wednesday early in the morning and partly cloudy on wednesday. overall, a pretty nice week. 29 the low tonight. so bundle up and 48 will be our high tomorrow.

look at the lows in the northeastern part of the state. whoa. down to 9 and 10 degrees in eureka. highs in the upper 20s. all the highs for tomorrow around 50. bishop goes to 60 with an overnight low in the teens, low 20s. 26 carson city. high tomorrow 47. the same thing for silver spring. 46 the high. and not much a wind at all, even in tahoe. overnight lows below freezing. truckee 16 with a 43-degree high. south lake 19. 44 will be the high there. to the north 26 to 46. spanish springs overnight lows into the upper 20s and highs in the mid-to-upper 40s like you see here. all the afternoon highs are about the same. not much wind. but gorgeous views and crisp starts to each and every daylin leach. so we take a break from the rainfall chances until friday. late p.m. 40%, 70%, 60% for carson city.

that's coming up on news 4 nightly at six. a crew of female british rowers arrived in australia all the way from the u.s. today after rowing across the pacific ocean. the four women began the row in san francisco in april of last year and spent 235 days at sea. australian media reported the group is the first female group it to boat, row the pacific. i can't imagine that. officials say the women rode 24 hours a daylin leach in two- hour shifts with stops in hawaii and samoa to restock on supplies. at least they got to stop in hawaii. they report that the journey raised more than $54,000 for injured service women and breast cancer patients. >> wow. pretty dedicated, huh? that is amazing. can you imagine how strong they are to be able to do that? i was looking at the video in amazable.
