estimate the dget will be very tight. it will also allow the school to start its charter renewal progress for the next school year when they will demonstrate that it will be financially sustainable for years to come. february. many students came out to the meeting today and they say how important this decision is to them. >> to be able to graduate at my school, be able to walk in my school. and i'm really, really excited. i have so much energy right now. >> reporter: rain shadow will remain in options through june ends. but there is still a lot of work to be done to keep it afloat for years to come. some trustees at the meeting today did say that they have been in talks with potential

fund the school. just into our newsroom, reno fire crews are clear the scene of an apartment fire. crews were called out a little after 5:00 tonight. the chief says two units were involved. it is now under investigation. a traffic alert to tell you about. sparks boulevard has been reduced to one lane in the northbound direction between shadow and baron boulevard afterab 18-wheeler -- after an 18-wheeler snagged a power line. let's take a peek outside. it's 6:00. we check in with collin jackson. he joins us with a first look at the forecast. nice couple of days. >> cold in the morning, overnight lows 25 to 29 degrees.

terry henry joins us with more. the newest information coming in. they're not saying much more than just identifying him. >> they're not saying a whole lot. but this happened during rush hour. and they're hoping that more witnesses come forward. authorities identified the man as serge row alvarado -- sergio alvarado morales. this started with a traffic accident involving four, possibly five vehicles. if there is a fifth vehicle, they're hoping that driver comes forward. alvarado morales was involved in the account but they're not sure what led up to the crash. they also confirm that he was armed with a knife and threatening to harm himself. one officer tried to subdue him using a tazer but that did not work. that's when a scuffle happened and the situation became deadly. i asked detective gallis their protocol in dealing with

is other things as well. a question tonight about school policy when it comes to head lice. robbie called up asking why the washoe county school district does not have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to head lice. his kids got it from some other student, and he got it from his kids, he's frustrated and wants to know why they don't crack down more. here's a look at them. not a pretty picture.

superintendent, she did not answer the question directly but referred me to the district's policy which says head lice air common but harmless presence wherever human heads are found. they are spread most often by direct contact or using an infested brush or hat of somebody else's. they infect up to 12 million school-aged kids nationwide. so it's a common problem. but kids are more like lie to get them from family members and playmates rather than from class mates at school. if you have concerns, the bottom line, they are not a health threat. so keep that in mind. and the district says they're simply a nuisance like bedbugs and that's why kids don't get sent home if they are discovered to have them. thanks to robbie for sending in that question. maybe not the answer you wanted, but that is the policy.

he doesn't have a car and says his day has been much longer without all the help he received calling it a blessing. >> we valid to find the way to get all the way down to south virginia by old town mall. they're here today. >> reporter: every year catholic charities and the st. vincent's program works with dozens of local service providers to give those in need services such as medical care, housing information, and haircuts. it's part of their annual project homeless connect event. >> reporter: barbara pratt was homeless nearly 15 years ago. >> i'm down here supporting, as an example of getting off the streets. i've been homeless once before so i'm an example that you can get off the street. >> reporter: and the support to help those in need continues into tonight at the reno event center. >> we love the opportunities to serve and make a difference in people's lives.

army is helping the homeless with its annual feed the hungry feast tuesday night. organizers expect to feed nearly 2,000 people. >> that's one of the great things about this event happening so soon after christmas. people know what we do at christmas. but it reminds people that one of our catch phrases is that need knows no season. >> the feed the hungry feast goes until 7:00 tonight at the reno event center, 400 north center street. it's open to anyone who needs a hot meal. collin, a storm could make things a little messy by saturday. >> it's almost unbelievable but that is the case. we do have a wet weekend on tap. staring at the glittering lights of downtown reno. clouds mostly clear tonight.

the timing of this storm to our west is about the same as the last one. will we see some snow on the valley floor in reno? long. 29 in the morning, rebounding to 55. substantially warmer. and here are your overnight lows to the northeast. mcdermott 19. other numbers, fallon 26. and 15 in ridgeport with highs around 50. other numbers look like this, not bad. but kind of cold. mid to upper 20s. average low. and is around the lake, overnight lows, 20s. highs in the mid-to upper 40s.

u the commander of san diego's naval medical center says absolutely nothing has been found to indicate that any shots were fired inside the hospital today. authorities did receive a single report of three shots fired inside one of the hospital buildings this morning. that prompted a quick lockdown of the hospital and the evacuation of everyone inside. a naval medical center official says there have been a number of sweeps through the building and no evidence has been found of any shooting. >> i'd like to emphasize that we take all reports like this very seriously.

people recognize what they're supposed to do in the event of an active shooter. there's been numerous events throughout the country and around the world. a middle school and two high schools in the area were locked down as a precaution today. militants went on a killing spree in cameroon. the latest tonight from washington. >> reporter: this from the terrorism alert desk, suspected insurgents have is hurt 65 people and killed others in cameroon. suicide bombers have killed dozens in that region in just the past month. isis has claimed responsibility for twin bombings in syria. the bombs killed 24 and injured 100 others.

a government checkpoint in the city. a few minutes after that, a suicide bomber detonated the explosive belt in a crowd of people. easy jet is reporting a falloff of air travel following the attacks in paris and the suspecting bombing attempt in egypt. in november businesses to and from the country have fallen and passengers choose not to show up for their flights. the texas teenager who used an affluenza defense has dropped his bid to stay in mexico. he fled to mexico late last year after a video surfaced which appeared to show him around alcohol, violating the terms of his probation. couch killed four people while driving drunk in 2013. his attorney successfully argued at the time that his privileged lifestyle prevented wrong.

and they also say if the attorney general does not indict, they're going public. >> reporter: so how will this all play out on the campaign trail? we'll get the first real indication next week. >> it's up to the courts to decide if the state department will be able to delay the release. those e-mails by another month. an investigate into weather a texas planned parenthood illegally sold fetal tissue has cleared the organization. but it brings legal trouble for two people connected with the videos. a grand jury found no wrongdoing on behalf of the houston clinic. it did find wrongdoing on the part of two people who made the undercover video. both now face charges of tampering are a governmental record. the video's released sparked a nationwide uproar over planned

tissue. the videos were heavily edited and is misleading. >> all along we knew that they had done nothing wrong. so this is not only a relief but a vindication as well. the center for medical progress released the videos in question. the founder says he faces charges of tampering with a governmental record and a misdemeanor count related to buying human organs. another antiabortion activist was indicted on similar charges accused of manipulating their driver's licenses. a government-appointed panel of experts says women should be screened for depression during pregnancy and after getting birth. the recommendation is from the u.s. preventative services task force. multiple doctors appointments during and after pregnancies can be a perfect opportunity for this type of screening. there is growing evidence that many cases of postpartem

an estimated 1 in 7 new moms experiences some form of sadness or other symptoms of depression. sad news to pass along tonight. abbe vagoada has died. his claims to fame include playing a cop and is a criminal over the years. the movie backfired ending in his execution in the godfather. he moved to the other side of the law with a comic turn on barny miller. he ran in that show from season? 75 to 1982. he was 94. he passed away in new jersey at his daughter's home this morning. and she characterized the cause of death as simply old age. some of you may have jumped on filing your taxes.

here are the results so farfar. there's still plenty of time to vote. ford is recalling thousands of rangers because of faulty airbags. the company says airbags installed in 2004 through 2006 rangers can explode with too much force and and cause injuries. the recall covers nearly 391,000 trucks in the u.s. and canada. the recall comes just days after the government announced that a south carolina man was killed in december when an inflater exploded. ford will send letters to owners about the recall in late february. go to ford.com and click on safety recalls. more signs that the housing recovery continues. home prices rose at a higher pace in november, up 5.5% over

the previous year. dallas, denver, san francisco, and portland have recovered fully to their july 2006 peak. low mortgage rates, strong employment numbers, and limited supplies of homes on the market continue to fuel the recovery. jet blue wants its planes to be more spacious, more modern, and more entertaining as well. the airline says it will be redesigning all 130 of its airbus a320 planes. jet blue plans to include inseat power outlets, turning station. there will be free wi-fi which passengers will be able to use before the plane reaches 10,000 feet. jet blue plans to start remodeling the jets in 2017 and finish by 2019. krista palmer has been awarded another honor for her efforts in the pool.
