7:01 am
together, today, january 31st, 2016. >> announcer: this is "today," live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. i'm erica hill. >> glad to have you with us. it is polling from the des moines register, that's a good indicator of how the caucuses will go in that state. donald trump has 5 points ahead of ted cruz. hillary clinton 3 points ahead of bernie sanders. they're basically neck and neck. we have full coverage and analysis for you this morning. we begin with nbc's hallie jackson covering the republican race from des moines. halle, good morning.
7:02 am
for donald trump this poll represents a 15-pointed turnaround since september. nearly half of likely caucus-goers say even now they could be convinced to change their minds. if they do, it's ted cruz that could stand to benefit the most. flying high for now, it's donald trump on top, the day before the caucuses in iowa. where the latest poll shows he leads ted cruz by 5 points. >> the numbers were so good for me, which i'm happy about. >> reporter: but trump's acknowledging turnout will matter mormon night. >> it all doesn't matter if you don't caucus monday. >> reporter: his closest rival here, ted cruz, says he has volunteers making 20,000 phone calls to potential caucusgoers. >> we're just wanting to know if we can count on you to caucus for cruz on monday. >> reporter: cruz has slid recently, a sign trump's attacks may be working. the most effective one, according to new polling, not on
7:03 am
>> he borrowed a lot of money, as you know, from goldman sachs and from citibank. >> reporter: cruz failed to fully disclose his loans from big banks. but trump has his problems too, including his support for eminent domain. cruz had been hitting him on that. >> this raisace is a dead heat, neck and neck. it's an effectively a two-man rice. >> reporter: marco rubio would beg to differ. >> we've done well here and we're looking forward to new hampshire and doing well there. >> reporter: ahead of the other establishment candidates in iowa, even as robe eeoubio downplays talk he could have a second place finish. >> i'm confident that when this process is finished and the delegates are counted, we're going to have more than half the
7:04 am
republican nominee. >> reporter: donald trump is taking to twitter to hit ted cruz over mailers his campaign sent out with "voting violation" on them. they're a common practice to get people out to the caucus, similar to ones used in the past. the bottom line about all of this, guys, both campaigns know turnout will be the key to winning tomorrow night. >> hallie jackson, thanks. to the democrats now, where the race is apparently so close, no one is sure exactly what will happen tomorrow. nbc's kristen welker has more on that. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning to you. the democratic race is anyone's to win here in iowa. secretary clinton does have a slight lead, but she's not taking anything for granted, and bernie sanders isn't letting up. the democratic candidates criss-crossing iowa late into the night saturday, with just hours to go. for hillary clinton, it was all
7:05 am
>> i am so proud to support my mom. >> she is the single best change maker i have ever known. >> reporter: husband bill and daughter chelsea helping deliver the final pitch she was thank you, bill. thank you, chelsea. >> reporter: clinton is entering the home stretch with a boost. saturday's "des moines register"/bloomberg poll shows her with a slim lead over rival bernie sanders, and "the new york times" endorsed her. >> i hope we will persuade you to join us in making progress for the country. >> reporter: earlier in the day, clinton tried to turn the page after the state department determined 22 e-mails from the former secretary of state's private server were top secret, clinton telling nbc news she didn't generate them. >> this is an interagency dispute.
7:06 am
and i want to resolved. >> reporter: senator sanders is still riding a wave of insurgent excitement, buoyed by their excitement. >> it doesn't look like a fringe campaign tonight. >> reporter: now the battle being waged in campaign war rooms. clinton and sanders have both built up armies of volunteers, ready to fight, determined to win. >> i haven't seen this excitement in so long. it's got to be something about this crazy old guy, right? >> we're here to help democrats and to hopefully get hillary clinton elected president. >> reporter: senator sanders could win iowa if young voters turn out in force, as they did in 2008 for then-senator barack obama. he won that group by a margin of 4 to 1. sanders and clinton have another relentless day of campaigning that will last into the night.
7:07 am
chuck todd is moderator of "meet the press." he is also in iowa. chuck, good morning. >> good morning, erica. >> the big unknown we keep talking about is how many people will actually show up. we've been hearing from our reporters on the ground, the trump campaign is making a push to remind people at rallies how to register and how to vote. is there a sense that that is having an impact? >> we don't know. we haven't seen the evidence of an upturn in voter registration on either side. look, high voter turnouts are good for bernie sanders with the democrats and trump with the republicans. i've talked to these first time caucusgoers. the cruz campaign believes they're going to win and that they're still ahead, because they're skeptical of these first time caucusgoers. i've talked to them. some of them have not voted in any election in 20 years. so that's why the skepticism is there. you think, boy, are they going to get up, go through this
7:08 am
the caucus location on time? you can get there at a specific time or they lock the door and you can't get in. trump's whole reliance is on a bunch of people who have never done this before. >> chuck, turning to the democrats, what does a second place finish for bernie sanders in iowa mean for his campaign moving forward? >> i think it means that he will be a tough challenger for hillary clinton. but it's hard to imagine how he could ever overtake her. you can't sort of make the democratic nomination fight a true one on one battle that's neck and neck the whole time if you can't knock her off here. if you can't beat her here, then outside of new hampshire, where else is he going to beat her? if he starts making inroads in south carolina, nevada, he will convince democrats, wow, he pulled off an upset in iowa. new hampshire is one thing, that's his next door state. but pulling it off here i think
7:09 am
it's a must-win for sanders, to be honest. >> what's the headline tuesday morning? what are we talking about tuesday morning after the caucuses are over? >> well, if it's -- look, we're going to be talking about donald trump, let's be realistic, right? it's donald trump's world, we're just lucky to live in it sometimes. no, it will be about whether trump is for real or not, craig. if he wins, it's panic time for real for the republican establishment, because i think he's going to be very hard to stop. but if he loses, then all of a sudden, that seed of doubt is planted into whether the trump phenomenon was all a mirage. >> so much to look forward to, right? it's going to be a busy -- what did we say, 35 hours or so? but who's counting? >> we'll be sedated. >> that comes tuesday morning, chuck. we'll look for you this morning on "meet the press."
7:10 am
marco rubio, and breezy. "today" has you covered on caucus day. we'll be live from iowa tomorrow morning. dylan, the other headline on tuesday morning could be whether they get that snow in iowa, right? >> it could be a blizzard on tuesday, we could be exploring some interesting run-in the at the airport on monday night. through the day on monday, we'll see just increasing clouds. temperatures across the state will be running in the upper 30s, lower 40s, everything's fine. then we get into monday night and tuesday. that's when the blizzard warning kicks in. notice the southeast part of the state not under the blizzard warnings. that's where we'll most likely see rain. if you head south, you'll be able to make any sort of flights. but if you're in the des moines area anywhere across central and northern iowa, we're looking at very gusty winds, as much as 9 to 12 inches of snow. waterloo looks like one of those areas where we'll see the jackpot.
7:11 am
monday night into tuesday, that's the time frame when we'll see our worst conditions as far as snow is concerned. >> dylan, thanks. to california, three dangerous criminals are back in jail after they escaped last week. the final two were captured on saturday, one day after their fellow inmate turned himself into police. steve paterson is live with more. steve, good morning. >> reporter: craig, for eight days those escaped inmates managed to stay at least one step ahead of more than a dozen law enforcement departments in the state of california. but it only took the quick thinking of one citizen in san francisco to alert police and bring them d down. for law enforcement in california, it was like%waking up from a bad dream. >> one of a sheriff's worst nightmares. >> reporter: after a week of anxiety and a state of excitement, a chance to exhale.
7:12 am
a sigh of relief. >> reporter: all three men who broke out of jail back in custody. hossain nayeri and jonathan tieu captured 400 miles away in this san francisco parking lot. police credited the quick thinking of a bystander who spotted the stolen van and alerted officers. as police approached, hossain nayeri fled on foot but didn't get far. >> he was apprehended without further incident. >> reporter: police found jonathan tieu inside the van along with 380 rounds of ammunition. >> it was clear to us these people were armed and dangerous. >> reporter: a day earlier, bac duong turned himself in. investigators zeroed in on hossain nayeri as the possible mastermind. police say despite speaking english, he enrolled in an

class with teacher nooshafarin ravaghi. she was arrested on thursday, held on suspicion that she provided maps that may have helped the men escape. >> we do know it was much closer and much more personal than it should be. >> reporter: nooshafarin ravaghi's neighbors say the can't believe it. >> it was quite shocking to see she would even have any part of it. >> reporter: now the three inmates and the teacher may find themselves on the same side of the law and behind bars. officials with the sheriff's department here say there hasn't been a jail break in more than 30 years, and that they've already made significant improvements to the jail's security system. meanwhile those inmates captured this weekend expected to be back here in orange county later on this morning. craig? >> steve paterson for us in santa ana, california. steve, thank you. in denver, a fight between rival biker gangs turned into a deadly brawl outside the motorcycle expo.
