he's a terrific college man, elyse. there's only two years difference in their age. that is a big difference at this age. let him come back when he's 35 and she's 33. we know rick. he's never been anything but a gentleman with me. it's not youi'm worried about, elyse. mallory's here. let's get out of here. why? we don't want her knowing we've waited up. the kitchen. the bedroom. the kitchen.the kitchen. we made it. five minutes to spare. i like your friends. they liked you, too. three different guysasked if you had sisters. tell jennifer that biff, rocky, and howard will becalling her tomorrow. well, here we are again, our couch. i'm beginning to feellike i should payrent on it. you don't need to.
7:05 pm
that was really nice. yeah, let's do itagain sometime. i'm free now. whoa. i think you better go now, rick. i'm expected to walkto my car after this? rick. it's hard to getworked up like this and thendrive home alone. it isn't easy for me, either. mallory...we'vebeen seeing each otherfor four months. they've been fourof the best monthsof my life. i feel the same way. for us to keepgoing together, i think we needto explore new territory, expand the horizonsof our relationship, and discover the wonders of nature. are you trying to saywe should go camping?
7:06 pm
because i hear myself, and i sound like another guy coming on to a girl. you know that's not what's going on. it's a big step for me. look at it this way, you won't have to go through it alone. i'll be with you. oh, is thathow it works? pretty much. think about it? i will. so, mallory, are you going to sleep with rick? i don't know.i haven't decided yet. you do it, or you lose him. that's not true. come on. rick's in college. if mallory won't sleep with him, plenty of girls will.
7:07 pm
that's no reason to do it. are you in love with rick, mallory? i might be. i've never felt this wayabout any other guy. bill and i have been going together for two years. we haven't slept together. what do you want, a medal? i want mallory to know she doesn't have to rush. guys like rick don't walk into your life every day. at least your first time will be something worth remembering, not like mine and danny franklin. you and danny franklin? kathy, you didn't tell us. this is major information here. it was a mistake. i got carried away. he didn't love me. he just wanted to go to bed with me...
7:08 pm
hi. just wantedto make myself a sandwich. do you have to do it in here? this is wherewe keep the food. dad. never mind. i'll just go gnawon the woodwork. mallory, if you decide to do this, be sure to get some birth control. rick will do that. he's not the one who's going to get pregnant. isn't it kind of unromanticto plan the whole thing? it's also unromantic to be 16 and pregnant. ok, on that happy note... we've got to go. i was supposed to pick up my mom a half hour ago. call me if you want to talk about it. ok, thanks. see you. bye, mal. did your friends leave?
7:09 pm
need any help cleaning up? no thanks. can we have a talk, mallory? sure. i don't know how to put this, so i'll just come out and say it. are you and rick... you know? you know? it shouldn't be so hard to talk to you about sex. i knew you before you were born. do we haveto talk about this? mallory, i know how you feel about rick. i thought you'd be confused and could use a talk. i don't knowwhat you mean. i'm not confused at all. i've got a lotof homework, so i better get started. here, have a cookie. i got to go. i don'twant a cookie! i want to talk. jennifer, is thisabsolutely necessary?
7:10 pm
to record family conversations. are you studyingto be an fbi agent? alex, this is jennifer's school project. we'll be glad to help. jennifer, if you don't mind. dad, let'stake a break. you always want to take a break when i'm winning. checkmate, dad. you happy? how did he do that? louder, dad. how did he do--oh. i guess this is good night. it hasthe usual elements-- it's dark out, and you're shuttingthe door in my face.
7:11 pm
think so? just a hunch. and you? uh, i'm not sure. maybe. um, mallory... have yougiven any thought to what we talkedabout the other night? it did cross my mind a few thousand times. i know you havesome doubts about this, but i've beenthinking about it, too. rick, my answer is yes. i got so nervous, i forgotthe rest of my speech.
7:13 pm
7:14 pm

7:16 pm
how importantis sex to a guy? well, i'd say it has a certain importance. on a scaleof 1 to 10. 35. that's what i thought. why are you asking me this? i'm justmaking conversation. this is not conversation. conversation is "how you doing?", "looks like rain", "care for a waffle?" there's something going on here you're not telling me. wait a minute, mallory. uh, has rick... asked you to visit his tepee? you meansleep with him. yeah. yeah. has he? well, yeah, he has. when you said you wouldn't sleep with him, you let him down easy, i hope. i said yes.
7:17 pm
7:18 pm
and a half. i was 17,8 months, and 3 days. you're babbling, alex. look, youjust can't do this. it's wrong.you're not ready. why weren't you wrong? that's different.i'm a guy. if a guy does it, he's a hero, but if a girl does, she's ruined her life? that's stupid. it may be stupid, but it'sthe law of nature. it's obvious you can't be objective about this. why do you wantto do this, mallory? well, i care very much about rick. and i'm attracted to him. i'm curious. i'm curiousabout astronomy. you don't see meriding the space shuttle. look, mallory... why don't youtalk to mom about this?
7:19 pm
i can't, alex. it's hard to tell parents about this. ok, well, whateveryou decide to do, don't do it. alex, i know in your own warped way, you've tried to help. i appreciate it. why are these kidsin such a hurryto grow up? the folks from architectural digestare coming next week, so try notto mess up. i'll do my best. allow me to take careof a few details. first... mood lighting. second, soft music.
7:20 pm
7:21 pm
rick... how do you feelright now? are you happywe're going to do this? you can't begin to imagine how happy. what's the problem? i don't know. i'm a little nervous about this. it's only natural. can we talk for a little while first? sure. um... did you enjoydinner tonight? very much. me, too. ok, i'm ready. mallory, look...
7:22 pm
if you don't wantto make love tonight, then just say so. i don't want to make love tonight. why not? we talked about it, we planned on it, i got the flowers... i thought i wanted to, and suddenly i'm scared. maybe i'm not ready. mallory, i care about you. but i'm notin high school anymore. our relationshiphas got to move forward. is sex the only way? no, no, no.it's not the only way. but it's definitelymy favorite. maybe i should go home now.
7:23 pm
will wesee each other again? i don't know. hi, mallory. how wasyour date with rick? fine. what did you do? we saw a movie. what did you see? uh... i forget exactly. something part two. why didn't rickcome in with you? he didn't bring me home. we had a fight. do you wantto talk about it? mom, if i ask you something, do you promise not to ask why i'm asking? all right. how do you know when in your life is the right time for sex?
7:24 pm
don't worry, nothing's happened. it's been on my mind lately. whether you can ever be sure of the right time. can you? i don't thinkthere is anypositive way to know when isthe right time. i'm not surethere's such a thing as the absoluteright time. i want to do what's best for me, but i'm too confused to know what that is. well, ifyou're confused, then i thinkyou should wait. you'll be ableto handle it much betterwhen you're older. i know i will. what if waiting means losing a boyfriend i like a lot? any boyfriendworth keeping will understand. you should know that sexshould never be used as a test of love.
7:25 pm
i'm glad we had this talk. so am i. [doorbell rings] mal, i won't stay long. i want to talk about what happened tonight. hi, there, rick. mrs. keaton, what a pleasant surprise. mmm. mom, can i talk to rick a minute? oh, uh, sure. i was just going up. good night, rick. what did you want to say? mallory, i'm disappointedat the way things went tonight. i'd be lyingif i said otherwise. i showered, and i feel better now. is that what you came to say? no, that's not all. i'm not the mostsensitive guy in the world.
7:26 pm
i hope that'snot how you feel, because i'd liketo keep seeing you. how did that sound? fine. i practiced itthe whole ride over. i want to keep seeing you, rick, but not sleep together. that's ok. if you're notcomfortable with it, then neither am i. ok. maybe we couldset thanksgiving as the target date.
