spirit will continue that. . >> reporter: senator debby smith continued her work after her diagnosis. she returned to the senate after having surgery to remove a malignant brain tumor back in february last year. smith was first elected to the state assembly back in 2000, and won a seat in the senate in 2012. she was 60 years old. 5 minutes after the hour now on your monday. last week, we showed you how recent vandalism at reno's overflow homeless shelter left more than 100 people without a bed to sleep in every night. the city of reno says they plan to open a new overflow shelter per week. volunteers of america operates it shelter. they've been allowing people to sleep in warming rooms in the meantime, but those rooms don't have any beds. the homeless people have had to sleep sitting up. staff members say they're making changes to those warming rooms to allow people to sleep laying down. the city of reno has a new location in mind for the overflow shelter, and they're right now trying to get a lease worked out.

remodeling for security and sanitary purposes before they can open up the new overflow shelter space. nevada public health officials will begin conducting independent inspections of group homes for the mentally ill. this comes after reports that one home in sparks operated by project uplift is on the verge of deteriorating. state officials allegedly bent the rules to ensure project up lift remained a certified provider. a state public health administrator says she plans inspect homes in nevada over the next week. she says some state employees likely overlooked the state of the home because of how difficult it is to all rightie. 7 minutes after the hour. winter, we are not done with you yet; at least we don't want to be. went to the mountains yesterday, did a little skiing. so warm. slow and slushy. i was like, man, we need some more. >> we do. >> in a bad way. >> hopefully, tim, we're looking at 27-day.

people welcome back, everyone. well, the so-called oprah effect hasn't worked yet for weight watchers sales. in the latest tv ad for the company, oprah winfrey says she's lost 26-pounds. shares of weight watchers have plunged almost 30% after the company reported a surprise $11 million quarterly loss. win friday saw the value of her stake in weight watchers drop by more than $27 million. the weight management company brought her on as a public face back in october. the number of people caught up in the theft of tax-pair data last year is seven times larger than originally thought. the internal revenue service said cyber crimes used a popular tool on their web site to steal the tax

shooting that happened just before midnight in the 200 block of north virginia street. this is downtown reno. police tell news 4 the shooting took place inside the casino, and that one person was taken to renown with unknown injuries. one person is also in custody, and all parties involved are reportedly cooperating with the investigation. we don't know if the victim and suspect know each other or not. we're going to be following this story throughout the day, keep you posted on any new developments. now we have an update on a story we've been following for you throughout the weekend. truckee police crews have found the body of a second man whose caw in capsized friday night. officials say they found lucas johnson's body in about 60 feet of water yesterday afternoon at the northeast corner of the lake near where they believe the caw in capsized. he was from auburn a. rescue team found the body of

as josh what patterson from cool, california. officials do not believe the men were wearing life vests. the water in donor lake was between 37 and 39 degrees over the weekend. there's new information this morning on a recent decision impacting solar customers. we're learning of a decision that will impact some institutions, including the city of reno and washoe county school district. for you the taxpayers, that means the anticipated energy savings are not what were initially thought. it also means there's new math in calculating how long it will take to recoup the millions of dollars in investment made in solar projects by the city and school district. naomi duer said reno installed storm systems. seven of those are affected by the new decision. >> we were expecting a savings of 1.6 million to $3 million over the life of the system. looks like this may cut our

two other officers were also injured. ronald hamilton, an active-duty staff sergeant assigned to the pentagon, is accused of shooting gwinden after killing his wife. an ohio pastor shot dead inside his church during a service yesterday morning. william schooler had just walked back to the pullpet inside scion baptist church when the resort got out of a pew and followed him. witnesses say they heard a couple shots fired while the choir was singing, and chaos quickly came. everybody started running out of the church. more than 20 people were inside at the time of the shooting. the shooter is believed to be the shooter's brother, and dayton police are still investigating a possible motive. one of pope francis's adviser ises acknowledged on sunday the catholic church made enormous mistakes in preventing thousands of children from being abused by priests. cardinal george pell testified to an investigative commission in his native usa via video link.
