coming out of that. >> several residents of san francisco say they're fed up with the spring of recent car break-ins occurring on the street. kron 4 reggie tells us what they want police to do to prevent this. >> car window shattered night after night here it's got so bad it's not unusual for residents to find shards of glass in their cars, all over the ground and sidewalk. cordis august 1st s&p said there been 10 reported car break-ins in this area. the most recent happen early thursday morning. this person believes the numbers much higher more like 16 car break-ins. he said some owners just haven't filed a police report yet. he showed me all the windows that he's had to replace on five of his cars. it's costing more than $1,200 in repairs. he is planning to

install surveillance cameras to hopefully catch the car burglars in the act. police say so far the thieves have been able to get away with laptops, gps devices and clothing. he just purchases brand new s u b a month ago he had to replace the rear and side windows thursday morning after thieves broke into it. >> windows smashed which to me seemed incredibly excessive i understand desperate times and sometimes people need to steal but why bring it to windows in order to get into a car. an old projector was taken and some cables we use to connect our phone to the car. i think that if police drove by more often at night, it would definitely dissuade people from taking this action. >> in san francisco reggie kron 4 news. if >> san francisco please also is investigating the beating of a gay man on in the light rail

train. taking a look of a photo of zachary davenport taken shortly after the attack he said he was writing the j church line near a church and market early saturday morning when a group of young rowdy people got on the train. he said he decided to get off but as he passed by one of them one of the men called him a derogatory name. davenport said he turned and said excuse me? that's when they attacked him. he was able to get off the train to run for help if but he said no longer feel safe. >> i live in the castro one of the most exciting places in the world for l g people. i've never felt scared in san francisco before this, and i just wrote the muni from downtown in the middle the day and i'm watching my back. >> davenport i looks much better now some of the swelling has gone down but police are treating the crime or the attack

a comeback kron 4 news weekend so the art of poetry has become not just spoken, not just reading but total performance. they're literally people who've come up through the world of poetry and comedy and into stage performing. this is mike mcgee he is a spoken word artist. or a

poet to. one international poetry slam competition and has created a play about your life i guess. the play is called in search of midnight. just for starters dramatically he said economic poetry also won a crepes this. >> it's about what life and how i was born with spina bifida i come from a large family. >> it's a totally disabling condition. and you're sitting here. spina bifida it is difficult but it's not the >> minor limitations in my life when i was born the family was given the impression that it was going to completely detrimental and completely disable me and i would not have the

week jobless claims taking a sudden and unexpected jump upwards. the weekly trend since last september. it shows that people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time the numbers kept dropping until the end of july. the last week did adult birds to nearly half a million cure the the ship of this graph shows why investors are worried about a new downturn it's a double dip recession. in the bay area there's another sign of the weakest economy a short drop in home sales. sales in july slid to the lowest of live 15 years and as christine conley explains the low numbers have a lot to do with the eye and inflammatory. >> in the bay area last month only about 6800 homes closed escrow that's down 22% compared to the same time last year and it's worse number we've seen for the month of july since 1995. this is california reports the highest increase in new unemployment claims in the country. real-estate agents say

the high unemployment numbers combined with the bleak outlook for the economy are helping keep potential buyers on the sidelines. this as mortgage rates hit historic lows. the 30 year fixed rate mortgage is now averaging about 4.40% that's the lowest since they began tracking this rates in 1971. it's not enough to spur sales. along with that we've also seen the expiration in the federal home buyer tax credit. every county in the bay area has seen a decrease in sales compared to the same time last year. take a look here you can see santa clara county has been hit the hardest with a 27% decline in sales. that's followed by alameda and contra costa county which is seen a 23% decrease in sales compared to the same time last year. in san mateo county sales are down 19%, in san francisco there down 16% and that follows closely by marin where sales are down 16%. i'm
