see the cost climb higher before things get better. >> health officials say a bay area prom, 3 months ago, may have been ground zero for the salmonella outbreak. that out break has now sickened hundreds of people and forced the recall of millions of eggs. the 30 or so students who got miserably sick after a prom and graduation party in santa clara county last may provide the first clues that all was not right with the nation's egg industry. we figured at that they sourced the desserts from the same bakery and the bakery used the same custard. >> officials are not identify the schools, or the bakery. but they say they determined that the custard was made from eggs contaminated with salmonella. and new clusters turned up at a korean restaurant outside san diego. and a catered breakfast at a movie set in los angeles. state officials sent out an electronic alert to health officials all over the country and new reports came in from a denver suburb and from minnesota connecting the dots they traced the salmonella to a pair of farms in iowa. and that led to the recall of more than half a billion eggs from 23 states. spite the recall the right egg farms and hallandale farms are still producing millions of eggs a day. and those eggs could still end up in your local supermarket. the differences they will not be in their shells. the eggs are going to facilities where they are taken out of their shells and pasteurized. the liquid eggs are then sold to food processors so they can be turned into mayo, ice-cream and other products. critics say the egg industry is rapidly consolidating, so fast that the problems of one producer can quickly effect the entire country. there are fewer than 200 farms that now provide 95 percent of the eggs sold in the united states.
