that is one of the angles we are falling. the other one is the tsunami warning all round the pacific right now. but its role some video, more damage in the downtown areas, on the eastern coast. you can see the cracks on the sides of the buildings. they will have engineers out there looking at the stability of all these buildings. they will assess whether they will be red tag or if people can go back in. a lot of apartment buildings impacted by this. they have built up more vertical because they don't have the live space. land. space. >> reporter: i've been living here for eight years now, this was simply the biggest, longest laughlasting earthquake.

shrinking with every passing hour. if you're unclear when a tsunami is, tsunamis are a series of waves, generated by earthquakes they could arrive within a matter of minutes after is to bear were earthquake court can take a number of hours to arrive. that is the case of this japanese quake. it will be until eight 08 a.m. the first knobby wave hits san francisco bay. they are generated hundreds of miles out the ocean. the wave we expect here in the bay, will probably be about 2 ft. in height, it is not a wall of water. a tidal wave you think of when you think of a tsunami. it will come in a series of waves. but to foot wave will come and

evacuation, but as a precaution they are not allowing anyone to come down towards great highway. they don't you want people coming down to see what it would look like. they wanna keep this as clear as possible. they don't anticipate anything big, but the one othey want to hear on the sf caution. >> james: obviously you're right here on this side of caution keeping people back as far as possible. it is start out there, but i assume you can see the stretch of beach? >> reporter: yes i do and i see some cargo ships off the coast as well. i wonder what their procedures will be. do they have to get up, or what's the case or are they ok. we will try to find the answers to those questions. great highway is shutdowns note

4:28 am
series of police that measure these waves the speed and height, they are picking up wave heights of 1 m. that might not sound too big, and is not big if you're in a boat out in see.sea. it's when it comes to shore becomes a problem. >> james: years when we expect those waves to come on shore. point reyes 7:39 a.m., a moderate bay some 40 4:00 a.m., san francisco bay 8 08 a.m. again they say the timing is something they will be tweaking. they have buoys' out the pacific measuring the wave height and speed. we don't know what the hype will be once it reaches an

know what to expect. we don't think it will be as bad, but to sign on the side of caution they want to keep it clear. at this time there is no evacuation notice i. >> james: yoli is keeping an eye on the situation. she is positioned to see the way coming in to the coast. she will catch it we are also covering it for
4:39 am
>> louisa: right now we could see 2-4 ft. waves move in to crescent city by 7:23 a.m. golden gate bridge just after 8:00 a.m., santa barbara around 8:17 a.m.. this is a look at how high the waves are expected to get. irina cop. when you think s you think of hundred feet waves, but it will not be that. the biggest concern right now is
4:40 am
hawaii. we have a tsunami warning until 7:00 a.m. hour for hawaii, some of those waves could get over 10 ft.. it is certainly a concern there. this shows us where the waves could be it the greatest period ran along the coast here, we could get strong waves. but certainly nothing like it will see elsewhere. here's a look at your map showing you some of the earthquake. we are looking at aftershocks and for shot six.fof course we are looking for more aftershocks going to happen. >> erica: we are keeping a close eye on the roadways, the effect due to the tsunami warning. the

>> james: breaking news story the tsunami that has inundated japan and force the issuing of tsunami warnings for every country bordering the pacific. japanese government saying there has been tremendous damage from the quake and tsunami. cnn has been moving higher around tokyo covering the quake. >> reporter: i can still filled the building shaking every once in awhile. this is ongoing, people have to stay calm, we do want to remind people japan is earthquake prone, people are trained to be calm. this was quite a large event. this is what it was like in many offices and homes in japan. we are on the ninth floor of an office building. just as it hit,
4:46 am
all the papers went flying, we have a tape library as well, the tapes are all over the floor. what happened in our office basically everything was shaking. and the thing that was piled up fell on the ground. we are still trying to sort things out here, what we see now, is the aftereffects of the quake event. we are not having secure phone lines, trying to get internet access is difficult, transportation as well has come to a halt. we're getting information on whether or not there is air traffic. the rail lines have completely stopped. this is a city that relies on real traffic. people are being evacuated out of high

rises. we are the only ones left in this building. people are trying to figure out how they will get home. prime minister is urging people to be calm. >> james: that the tsunami warning has gone out for about 20 countries. hawaii will be the first u.s. state to see the impacts of the tsunami, that first wave will hit at about 6:00 a.m. will check with your reporter to see what they're doing to prepare. >> reporter: i was trying to get an idea of how people reactioreo this. the first thing you notice that every guest patient, there's a line of cars filling up their tanks, preparing, they're being told to evacuate inland hackles a mile.half smill
4:48 am
like this is the real deal. i've been through this before i've grown up in hawaii, this time last year there were tsunami warnings. when it came to short it was only a couple of inches. this time they feel different. >> james: we are following the latest in hawaii, also around the world, not only is this damaging property and obviously cost in lives. it has an impact on the global markets. we have financial stocks taking a beating. a lot of insurance companies are expecting there will have to pay dearly for some of the rebuilding cost. we have the tsunami warning in place. a live picture in japan. we are expecting the first waves of that's not me to arrive at 8 08
4:49 am
a.m. the wave heights vary. we don't have a good idea of how big it will be yet, but it looks like you will be between two up to 70.when7 ft..to 7 ft. we seeg the eastern coastline in japan finding shelter, finding someplace to live and eat, some houses have been carried away in a wave of water. we will be back with more a minute. before we go we have this video to show you. those are cars being carried away, everyone of them falling over what now looks
4:50 am
like a waterfall. can you imagine seeing this kind of thing around the bay. it is unthinkable. here in japan they are dealing with that reality this morning. streets turned into rivers, cars being carried down the street. we also have video refinery fire this morning. huge fire, look at how big those fires are. japan's top government spokesperson came out and said they had to clear state of emergency and nonnuclear plant. they shut power down in the wake of the quake. at this point there's no reagent leakey, there's no immediate danger. but they need cooling systems and if you can get that thing on my quick this may be a serious situation. as we said this tsunami alerts have been issued . even up in alaska they are
4:51 am
bracing for possible ways to arrive there. the west coast impacted by this as well. we'll have more as the wave continues to make it way across the pacific we expect to see the waves impact the coastline. san francisco 8:08 a.m. said barbara a 20 4:00 a.m., santa monica 839, the entire coastline is impacted by this. we are watching for any indication from the national weather service as to when we might get a better idea of the wave height. we will let you know some as we do. there are no evacuation orders for the bay area. that call will be made by 8:00 p.m. by local officials.aa.m. 8:00 a.m.
4:52 am
>> louisa: here's a map of japan showing those quakes, the aftershocks and foreshocks. it is on his own between north america plate and the pacific plate. >> erica: we are monitoring the coastal freeway is, whether not they are shut down due to the tsunami watch. as of right now the only one in the fact is the great highway which shut dent in both directions. the chp is asking all cars avoid the entire area. same with pedestrians. that will be the fact until midday afternoon. we are
4:53 am
keeping a close eye on roadways and the pacific the areapacific >> james: we have somebody on the phone we can talk to further about this. the west coast tsunami center. so your the person we want to talk to this morning. we have been following the quake and the tsunami warning. what's the latest? >> caller: we are measuring and it is is significant a couple feet in some areas. >> james: so it's making its way from alaska down here? >> caller: absolutely we have most of california in a warning.
4:54 am
>> james: are people being evacuated? >> caller: we are hoping, all warning is that call for evacuation. we hope the emergency managers are exercising evacuating the tsunami zone. >> james: is that a call they made is and as a warning is issued? >> caller: it is up to them, it is their call. when they decide to. we recommend they evacuate is and as we shall morning. that warning went out, it's all a
4:55 am
blur for us. >> james: we expect the way for at about 80 and this morning they were talking about wave heights of up to 7 ft.. why is that such a discrepancy. >> caller: each coastal, the initial warning sorry when out at 7:20 a.m. each community has different air areas, they have a different slope, and how shallow pit is below the sea level determines how a tsunami will rise. because each community is so unique there's no way to know exactly what to expect.
4:56 am
5:00 am
5:01 am
m it will happen around low tide, the reality is the water rise will be less than our normal high tide. >> mark: we're fortunate our way because of the timing of the tides. i know geography plays a big part in the spiriis. we heag crescent city the waves are supposed to be up to 7 ft.. >> caller: it's my understanding they are evaluating. it is incredibly prudent that they do that. we are looking at the modeling. >> mark: we know why he has evaluated the hotels around the beach. what do you know about what is to hit whole why right
5:02 am
now? >> caller: i've been consumed about what is expected in california. >> mark: we have had ocean beach closed is this just precautions'? >> caller: we ask the park service said they agreed to close down the beaches. we closed the great highway as a precaution. just because the event brings out people who want come watch at the beach. we don't want congestion in the area as a precaution. >> mark: thank you so much free time this morning. let's get more on the mass of earthquake that hit japan. with that earthquake and 8.9. the largest in 300 years. >> darya: here is how to prep
5:03 am
for a tsunami once a warning has been issued. they cannot predict the effects exactly. we have heard what we should be prepared for. they say follow the instructions issued by local authorities. if they tell you to get to higher ground that's what you should do. in this case we are not being told to get higher ground. use battery powered radio, and stay tuned for information. you should always have a disaster supplies kit at hand. if there were evacuation's and follow them. again there are no evacuations in the bay area. they expected to be like fellow high tide in our area. this would happen in the event that there is a major
5:04 am
a tsunami. that is not the case with this one. >> caller: it was unlike anything i have ever felt. this was the biggest laundress last it earthquake i have ever experienced. >> darya: it is a completely different story in japan, this 8.9 quake has killed 40, some estimates as many as 60 people. you can see fires have been set because of it, there was a tsunami as well. you can see there the way of causing much damage. their estimates that it was 23 ft.. take a look at this video, you can see some of the damage. the quake struck at offices. this is a 8.9. the shaking that is going on the
5:05 am
things falling off of the shelves. this was centered a way from tokyo. you see people running for cover. now let's take a look at the impact on the buildings from the outside. this is video of the building as it shakes. you can see a fire started there. this building actually was rattled, so much so that some of it fell onto the street. cars were actually thrown from the streets as well. you'll be able to seek what this building 13 appeared then there is the tsunami that happened warnings continue in japan and russia. earthquakes are known to issue tsunami warnings. we did see a big wall of waves washing away cars.
5:06 am
we'll have more video as it comes in. this is a fresh peace that just came in. you can see the water. the cars are being washed away. this is what we have seen in japan where the waves just rolled right through the streets. there is a video of walls of waves caring cars and everything else away. right now the first impact will be in hawaii, that should have been momentarily. nothing like this expected in all white or california. >> james: obviously the most immediate impact of spirit as we wait for more affirmation let's show you some more of these pictures out of japan appeared these are incredible. cars are
5:07 am
floating downstream is that look more like rivers than anything else. here's another one where a search sweeps under the bridge. here is a refinery, it went up in smoke this morning. this as one of the top official says funicular power plant had a mechanical failure in its cooling system down. there is no reactor leak, but obviously they need to get back on line. this is not a street is that of runway. this is at an airport that saw a lot of damage. that airport is out of commission. a lot of debris cars, parts of houses, an entire roomfuroof, te place is a complete washout. big
5:11 am
>> darya: 5:10 a.m. breaking news coverage continues in the wake of the earthquake in japan. a tsunami warning in the bay area. they don't expect big weights. but it is a precautionary trial.drill. >> caller: this is a an unprecedented tsunami. we're looking at key indicators. we might not have parts servicparte after 7:00 a.m., between daly city and west oakland. the
5:12 am
reason for that is because most of our stations are under ground. of course water, people, equipment don't mix. we wanna take extreme precautions. >> darya: you have her predictions by all accounts-- where precautionscould. >> caller: but you are looking at aboveground. we have to figure out what the power of the force of the wave will be under water. we have part stations under water, that's what we have
5:13 am
to consider. stretching from daly city to west oakland. that's where we will not have train service. we just want to take the side of precaution here better safe than sorry. >> mark: what you watching? >> caller: the power of the tsunami. in may not create a big wave you can see. but under water the strength of the wave may be something different. we have to look at that. >> darya: then actually i think we might ask our expert. we have been talking about the wave which won't be anything out of the normal. but you're talking about the underwater energy appeared a wonder if it is a regular high tide situation. our
5:14 am
runs during those times. >> caller: nobody has been through this before. what we're trying to look at is what is the power of that water moving at that speed, and what forces going on under water. how it affects the whole idea, in different parts of the coast. it will hit crescent city before it hits the spirit we are looking at key indicators that's how we make a decision. it is a little different than everybody that is above ground. >> mark: thank you for your time. >> darya: back with more in a
5:18 am
