>> mark: 60 a.m. a live look here from san francisco is ocean beach, the california coast is under a tsunami warning. just after 8:00, 1-3 ft. wave is expected to hit the coast. evacuation under order. the great highway is closed. a massive devastating 8.9 earthquake hitting japan the fifth largest earthquake ever recorded. it is headed towards the west coast. >> louisa: seen waves in

hawaii, there's a tsunami warning for the entire state of hawaii. rtc and waves up to 7 ft.. we are expected to see continue to see those waves increase. the big island could actually get waves up to about 10 ft.. this map shows you where they could reach. dark shade of red indicating 10 ft. waves. rain now japan has already seen 98 quakes. we're talking about those aftershocks, as well. this happened raid on the zone between north american in the pacific plate. will continue to watch those aftershocks. golden gate bridge, we're watching waves here in our area as well.

wave heights are expected to peak just after 8:00, the good news is this is low tide. that does keep those waves down slightly. those waves continue to push down to santa barbara. here's a look at some of those fights, expecting them to get out part of 04 feet up into arena cove. more than 2 ft. waves through. rave. pacifica 2.8, 3 ft. half moon bay. >> darya: thank you, we do want to tell you there have been some evacuation orders issued for the beaches in san mateo county. they are expecting the waves to hit around 730-8:00 a.m. they're asking people to move east

of the highway and residents in lin mark are advised to evacuate to the east of adobe drive. an evacuation shelters are being established as well. again, especially when it comes to those shelters this as a precaution, something that is done at of caution. to test the system. this is what should happen, at this case we're looking at a rise in the water. >> mark: yoli is live. >> reporter: good morning if you were thinking that you're going to come down here, take a look at the tsunami wave, you can forget about it is shut down. they're not allowing any traffic, not cars, muni, foot traffic. they know it is not going to be a very

big way, they think may be only 3 ft., but the force that comes with bad wave is a big concern. they don't even want to foot traffic out here. the beach is completely closed down. they really want to be cautious, make sure no one gets injured. even though the great highway is closed, they are allowing residents to remain in their home. but, they do have their command center in the richmond district in case things change and they have to mobilize. they will do that. come in the meantime no evacuations but deftly the great highway is shut down. >> mark: this will be approaching our coast as we almost hit a low tide this morning so 5 ft. lower than the high tide we saw this morning. we lucked out as far as the tides are

concerned. >> darya: despite the fact that they're not expecting any destruction or evacuation's it has really kicked into gear all of the precautions of emergency management. this is where they're making the calls on what to do, how to respond. let's go live to jackie sissel who has been monitoring it. >> reporter: they're using all the information they can, i'm here this san francisco department of emergency management, this is the operation center. this is all the coordinating agencies, what they're doing is they're working city-wide to come up with a strategy of response to the tsunami warning that has been issued. they went over new data, figure out there basically nothing has changed they feel like everything is still status

quo. there were call to this operation around 1:00 a.m. once was determined that there was a tsunami threat. they all came to the emergency office. it is everything from fire, communications, police, transportation, all of these differ department heads are coming here to go through these trials, they know who to call, who to alert, who to contact. that is what they've been doing all morning. use of the fire chief, he has been called the operation center. --you saw the fire chief he has been called here. they're getting a tremendous amount of calls from 911, they don't want people to call 911 they want them to call 311. so they can get city information. they don't want the 911 lines clocked. it is

a fluid situation, it is changing by the minute. they're trying to determine what to do next. >> darya: when they're calling 911 this morning, what they want to know? were they concerned about? >> reporter: what to do, where to go with the threat is. if they should leave their house, evacuate. what time this event may happen? people are concerned. but 911 is that the number to call. it is not the avenue to take, 311 is the non- emergency city number that they're asking people to call this morning. >> darya: if you're just waking up, you don't read the ticker we have been very clear all morning long that the earthquake was in japan. the bigger tsunami it was in japan. by the time it gets here we're talking about a rise in the water. i think his office has been doing a

great job and keeping us posted so we know the level that this rise is too. it is more at this point almost like a scientific thing to look at, this wave is travelling 5 madrid miles an hour. we're amazed at how fast it gets here, water will rise to a high tide level at best. >> george: we're lucky that it occurs at the time of low tide. in nearly morning hours there were concerns about public transit there was some concern that bart might suspend service, they won't. golden gate transit service, the golden gate ferries will not be affected. neither will a higher rate varies. it will run as scheduled. no impact to traffic on the golden gate bridge. in fact the only traffic impact besides the closure of the great highway is that we're getting word of heavy traffic on highway 92.

>> mark: welcome back to the kron 4 news. following the latest with the tsunami warning if there was an 8.9 massive earthquake hitting japan hundreds of people reportedly dead, major damage. a small tsunami wave is heading in hawaii, traveling at five and a miles per hour across the pacific ocean. california is under a warning. it is expected between two-7 ft.. 2 ft. near the golden gate concern to our north for the been hit by tsunamis before a 7 ft. wave is possible there. they have evacuated crescent city. >> darya: san mateo county is the only place that we've heard of these evacuation's, craig sklar is live with us from pescadero. >> caller: high, their voluntary investigations-- evacuation's. people are packing bags, to get some

high ground that is further away several miles from the coast. people are very nervous. i think the people here are showing folks that this is a safe place to be. a number of families have packed their bags heading for the hills. >> darya: we are showing this live shot while we're talking to greg off the coast from pacifica, it's not were expected to see but here where we are looking at this live shot we could see about a 2.8 ft. wave which just means not a giant wave at all. but a rise in the water since it's happening at low tide that will take it to about high tide. i am

wondering, these people searching for higher ground are they leaving sandbags around? >> caller: they don't really know what to expect. i think they're expecting the worst. there's no sandbags are anything organized. i think they think it will be worse than when you hear. they're not taking any chances. early in the morning they're heading away from the coast. >> darya: will keep you posted as craig is there we will know we're in the air. >> mark: we keep getting revise times in tight information, louisa is watching now. >> louisa: we're watching heavy rain, high waves rain now pushing in through hawaii, we still have that warning in effect. at this

point only reports of minor damage. that is good news. we are expecting to continue to see a wave heights increasing. this is a visual, showing how the oaf's waves could get. the darker shade indicates wave heights of about 10,000 ft.. we're also continuing with that tsunami warning along our coast as well. we are expecting wave heights to really increase. here's some of the wave heights as we had to the day, crescent city 7:23 a.m. expect to see those waves really start to lift. golden gate 8:08 a.m.. we could see wave heights above 4 ft.. we will be right back with the kron 4 morning news, weather and traffic in just a few moments. the debris. wall of water that came on ground. we have a nuclear power plant facility that has a power plant that is down. they say there's no leaking of any radioactive material but if they do not get the cooling system back on they can have a problem. this is the airport, inundated with water on all sides. air travel, real trouble,--rail travel is devastated. folks are having a tough time getting down. two-three bodies reportedly washed up on the coastline. --2-300 bodies washed up on the coastline. more on that in a mo.

we have live pictures, to the east of tokyo 100 ft. flames shooting into the air a major fire erupting at this oil refinery plant. we continue to follow the devastating tsunami that swept onshore. hundreds of people are dead, 349 missing. those numbers are expected to climb. over 23 ft. wall of water coming onshore. >> darya: the fireball is incredible, so is the video of the tsunami. we will continue to show you some of the video coming into kron4 of all the ships, washed away in japan. as that energy makes its way through the pacific we have a warning, we are watching for the ocean to rise. we're watching for anywhere from

2-3-for-5 ft. of zero wise in the water. it is expected to hit around a clock, we're live here at ocean beach taking a look of the waves monitoring that. we have louisa who's looking at the very latest as the numbers are changing little bit with the height predictions. anything would still be considered a small wave of the predictions are increasing. they're not sitting to evacuate the bay area and not expecting flooding but, they close the beaches they don't more people getting too close, there's the curiosity factor. a tsunami wave just looks like every killer waves. it just looks like high tide of the wrong time. >> louisa: we're talking anywhere from 2-4 ft. waves. a good thing we have an our favor is a lot of these way peaks are happening around low tide. here's a look

people that if you want to seek higher ground that you should. here's the officials with their advice is areas west of highway-one to move east of the highway, linda mark area as to go to the ease of adobe drive, east of coronado street. as a precaution, evacuation centers are being established. it kicks in because there is a tsunami warning. the evacuation centers are listed on your screen. as far as we know here in the bay area, we are emphasizing exactly what we can see, mostly we expect to see surf braves and the water being at high tide >> mark: level. we are bay area beaches of keeping an eye on things. will? >> will: people who live

here say the waves look exactly like they did yesterday. if the authorities there and you're not taking any chances. you can see them putting the yellow tape there. just making sure that there is no public access to the beach. not just here but all beaches in pacifica. in fact they have cut off access to the neighborhoods unless you live here they will not lead to down here. the reason why we're here is because they want us to get the word air, if you're thinking of a coming back to pacifica to look at the beaches, the waves you will not get close because as resuming, you concede they put yellow tape along that stretch of beach as well. lots of police officers from pacifica and they're having extra shifts a day working longer shifts, they are also using officers from san bruno, daly city, redwood city. they're calling on their mutual aid to cover all the

beaches. because they're so many. they did not have enough police officers over night. be careful, be aware, when you come down to pacifica you can go about along highway-1 but don't think about turning they will stop you. >> mark: we'll check back with you as we wait for that way. >> darya: interesting enough, the residents say the beach in the waves do not look any different than they did yesterday. yoli is out at ocean beach >> reporter: .i did talk to the coastguard of little earlier, they said about 7:00 there will have some kind of a surge of 3 ft.. you can see we're at low tide, there's plenty of beach between the surf in the land, at any case is still shut down there doing it to be precautious. even though

it's a small wave there's a lot of force behind the tsunami wave, they don't want anyone to get too close. that is why the beach is closed down. they have great highway close down as well. they're not letting any kind of traffic through the cars, not foot traffic the free ride muni. that's close down. you can see some of the patrol cars have been here through the whole night. they will remain shut down until further notice. >> darya: that will confuse our concern people you have been out there a ton, you say it really looks like regular low tide. if you add to that two or 3 ft., and you get the water coming up to maybe high tide? >> reporter: exactly looks normal but because it is a tsunami warning they're taking it seriously, they

>> mark: welcome back to the kron 4 news. a massive earthquake in japan, there is a massive tsunami, reports of a wall of water 20 ft. high, sweeping onshore, and i said, hundreds missing as disease occurs carried away. as the tsunami wave went to a half mile on shark in northeastern japan. it was hardest hit by the tsunami. other video to show you,

from japan as the earthquake hit. lasted over a minute, many saying it was the largest lasting earthquake they have ever felt. the eight plan nine struck for over a minute. you see some of the damage, to under 40 mi. northeast of tokyo. a lot of damage in tokyo. power plants, a cooling system and to stop working. a huge refinery fire is burning. >> darya: is amazing that after this tsunami they've had 50 aftershocks for oracle. a lot of activity london close happening. take a look to this new video of the tsunami just turning in the ocean. he looks like a tornado the way it is forming a swirl in the ocean. that is the tsunami that did so much damage in japan. it is working its way

do still have that way fluctuation in effect. coastal evacuation still. for our area we are still under a warning, watching the next couple of hours as those hates' in these--as those wave heights increase. we are expecting the tsunami to push run through as we head into the next hour or so. we're expecting this wave heights to rise around 808. this is low tide that's a good thing. the wave heights expected to get up to 4 ft.. places like pacifica and half moon bay could see waves.
