surge. >> (sirens) >>catherine: authorities are screaming at people to evacuating get out. you're looking at the santa cruz harbour earlier today. the searchers were continuous and they came, they went and they did incredible damage to this harbor. there were a lot of boats closely packed and people again just help us to do anything about this. some of the latest numbers were hearing at least 30 boat severely damaged. he sees some are flipped over, all boats which sunk, boat switch were washed away. a lot of boats in the closely packed harbor were crashing and to each other. the latest number were hearing, if you get the damage to the harbor and the boats, were talking probably over $15 million.

there's somebody out here earlier and he said it looks of the santa cruz harper is basically destroyed. the damage is just extensive. kron 4, has been out there and you could tell us what's happening now. how does it look? >>reporter: it's really hard to say at this point. the damage estimate into the millions of dollars. if we go in the distance, you could see one of the boats just sitting on the dock. if i can pan to the left want to show you another boat that's in the water and its upside down. many of the boats, at least 20 capsized and sank. you have these stocks, at least one of them that we know of that went out. things are floating in the water like this. some and that weighs less 50 lbs. sometimes three or four times the size of the one i'm holding just floating and going and a high rate of speed raid into boat. i

our team coverage starts with >>haazig: this is what it sounded like when the tsunami sent a powerful surge of water into the santa cruz yacht harbor. the fast-moving water tossed these boats around like they were toys. ripping several stocks in the harbor to shreds. just as quick as the current move to and within minutes the water reverses direction taking boats like this one with that. leaving a path of destruction in its wake. voters like this bracing for another surge to come crashing in. it reporting live, kron 4 news. >>rob: the safest place for boats to be with the tsunami came and in santa cruz was at sea. this is one of several dozen boats that became on down as the water surged into the harbor. it pushed many of the news on tied it boat this under the

wall of water such as created incredible damage and killed hundreds of people. of the cars, trucks and vehicles been washed around. some people are asking if the tsunami like this one had japan, hit the bay area what would look like? jonathan blum gives us a look. >>jonathan: one of the things we've been hearing is 3 mi. and from shore. that's the damage we've seen in japan. if that were happen in the bay area, we did dissimulation. that sort of tsunami did not hear but if it did we would approximate the area it would cover on our google earth map. this would be based on the elevation and distance from shore. obviously some of the communities like half moon bay, that out or not up these would be absolutely flooded. on the other side of the santa cruz mountains

things like pacifica its low-lying area, the waves to lap up against those cliffs. in a situation like this pacifica would experience flooding. everything west of 280. in san francisco, things would look grand jury had pretty much everything west of 20 would have some flooding. all told the park would be under water for moments after that wave. neighborhoods like the rated district are particularly low lying. parts of the presidio would temporarily be under water during the peak surge as of the tsunami. as you could see the entire richmond district would be flooded. 3 mi. and from shore that is nothing to sneeze at. that is a good one-third to one-half of the city of san francisco. it would be very significant damage. the damage were seeing incredibly light to the amount of damage forcing intinto japan.

you hear a lot of crunching noises. >>catherine: rescue crews still looking for survivors of the quake and the tsunami that triggered the 8.9 tremor. those of us who were here in 1989 can remember what it was like to ensure a 17 second major quake. what is say the japanese quake lasted more than two minutes. >>the quake was 900 times as strong as the 1989 quake. it was so powerful the entire japanese coast permanently shifted by 7 ft. people ran for safety hundreds of miles from the epicenter in tokyo. while the quake was terrifying, what came next was beyond

>>catherine: the coverage of the tsunamis surge continues. we want to show you a video of of the santa cruz harbour earlier this evening. it and see how the votes were tossed about. kron 4 rob has been on the scene all day and has an update for us. what's it look like? >>rob: we are losing the light the water very placid break out. we continue to see a lot of stuff washes ashore. your looking at chunks of a boat dock sitting right down there on the concrete. that's what we've been saying floating around here. there are about 20 boats under water here. earlier jerad stone should to a piece of concrete and we said that's floating around. how does concrete

slow? what happens is the concrete is run by star fall. here's a closer look at what you're saying. it's a big chunk of the dock which broke loose and has been floating around and it's made of styrofoam. that's what keeps the concrete from sinking. we have $15 million worth of damage your the harbor from the staff. that stuff is just floating all over the harbor. tomorrow they will begin a salvage operation. you could see a couple votes out here, others died boat. they will go in once the tsunami advisory is lifted. the coast guard is told us earlier, they don't know exactly what is out there. there could be other votes that washed for the road to the bay. be advised go carefully as your head in and out of the harbor.
