japan now stands at 3300 people from friday's earthquake in tsunami. officials say they do expect the numbers to go much higher. searchers found to survivors today including a 70 year-old woman whose home was torn off its foundation. as samantha hayes reports, a third explosion at a nuclear power plant continues to raise fears of radiation exposure. >>reporter: a dramatic rescue tuesday in a city where rescuers pulled a man from a collapsed building. 96 hours after the earthquake hit. american workers look for others who may have survived. however, many more victims have been found dead. the death toll from thursday's 9.0 earthquake in tsunami has risen to more than 3300. fears of a nuclear crisis to continue after a fire tuesday burned the fuel

rods containing radioactive material inside the fourth reactor at the nuclear plant located in one of the hardest-hit areas. more than two to thousand people within a 20 km radius at evacuated. those within 30 km have been warned not to go outdoors. just 50 workers remain at the plant to carry out crucial clearing work. some nuclear experts say the situation may be too dangerous. >> it's going to start impacting even the workers i think. >>reporter: also tuesday a reported 5.8 to 6.0 earthquake hits while the area was not in danger of a tsunami there are other concerns. >> in the areas that had strong jolts there's a possibility to cause a landslide. >>reporter: reporting live, kron 4 news. >>pam: more videos and pictures of been posted on line showing the aftermath of the massive quake.

>>live, from the bay area's news station, this is kron4 news at 6:00. >>pam: the threat of a nuclear meltdown and the consequences on our side of the pacific. radiation levels are dropping as the crippled reactors. the prime minister said the danger of further leaks is growing. we will talk to experts about the possible health hazards in california, and shows you how the japanese are struggling to cope with the chain reaction disaster that began with last week's earthquake. but in the last hour japanese officials have revealed that 70 percent of the nuclear fuel rods may have been damaged at the power plant. a new fire is burning at one of the reactors. as catherine shows us, the threat of nuclear meltdown is one more crisis. in a nation facing power

outages, food outages. >>catherine: the government applied in 18 mi. no-fly zone around the power plant northeast of tokyo. radiation levels briefly rose in the capital and the u.s. navy advise personnel at its naval base to stay indoors. at the plant, all but a handful of workers have been evacuated. >> at the levels were hearing about fortunately the general population away from the plant doesn't seem to be in danger. that is something we should be grateful for. >>catherine: those remaining are struggling to regain control for reactors crippled by the earthquake in tsunami. on monday, a second explosion damaged reactor no. 3 destroyed the roof and walls. then another

explosion at number two, and now fire has broken out at no. 4. >> and still concerned about what might happen to these reactor vessels. they're designed not failed but, some of things that are supposed to happen have not happened. things that weren't supposed happened have happened. >>catherine: survivors are still being pulled from the shattered homes. the first international relief workers can hardly believe what they're saying. >> he looked around and there's nothing left. it's an appalling situation, it's as bad as anything i've seen. >>catherine: in tokyo, long lines at the airport and families tried to flee from the future meltdown. the present day charges in the capital. gas supplies are running low, drivers wait for as long as an hour to fill up if they could find an open station. there are long lines at stores as well. for the paper has become a scarce commodity.

some stores are posing a limit on how many roles customers can buy. rolling blackouts have left stores, homes and schools without lights. the power shortages are expected to last through next month. >>jonathan: your honor map you could see were that plant is in relation to the hardest-hit cities. let's go in for a closer look. in tokyo, there have been reports of elevated radiation levels although those levels and said to fall back down to normal recently. you could see here, most much closer to the power plant and the epicenter of the earthquake that generated the deadly tsunami. you could see there's a 19 mi. ring around the power plant which is a no-fly zone. it's also the area recommended for evacuation. officials told people who live near the power plant it may not be safe for them to stay home. those people of course piling into evacuation centers. he could see there

are four reactor stored in four separate concrete buildings and at any point east of these four reactors over the last two days have had their own shares of problems. if the most recent, and the no. 4 reactor building, two fires caused by one problem in that reactor. if the other three have had explosions to varying degrees. if the no. 1 reactor had out wall break off because of the reaction. you could see along the pacific coast, and that has been a saving grace for people tried to combat the threat to of nuclear meltdown. it they have been using sea water to cool down the reactors. there is no power here, they have had to shut the nuclear reactors down. this is one of the world's biggest 25 nuclear reactors. it incorporates much more safe the that like the plant that glove and chernobyl.

officials are hopeful the radiation in the power plant will not reach across the ocean to california. if that's take a look of the winds that may carry the contaminated air to the american pacific coast. the jet stream it is forecast as we bought off the coast in a northerly direction and make its way across the pacific ocean and ultimately if models are right sweep down our pacific coast past alaska and canada and ultimately potentially pass the coast of california. according to a nuclear physicist, the likelihood of any radiation levels that could cause health problems here in the u.s., is very low. we would need at chernobyl type meltdown in order to be concerned about our health in the united states according to one of them. at this point it's unlikely to happen because of the safety measures that replace your at the plant. reporting live, kron 4 news. >>pam: large numbers of people in the west coast are demanding potassium iodide pat tablets which repels to

protect the thyroid from radiation exposure. suppliers say they are back ordered. they're even getting panic calls from people hoping to get those bills. however many experts say all of the demand for radiation kills may be overblown as the u.s. coast is an ocean away from the nuclear plants. as jonathan mentioned in kate thompson explained she took people's questions and concerns over that kind of danger, uc- berkeley nuclear experts. >>kate: i ask two experts from uc-berkeley when the radiation from japan could hit the california coast. the experts say most likely will happen in a couple of days. incredibly sensitive sensors will most likely pick up small amounts. even with small amounts of radiation, should people be concerned. experts say know. a small trace amounts are not harmful and should be of no health concern. what if it is worse case scenario?

billion. nearly half of that budget 12.5 billion, could be filled and through tax extensions. tomorrow state senators and assembly members are expected to vote on the governor's proposal which would include a tax extension on the june special election ballot. in case that vote is not approved, either tomorrow or in june, the schools are preparing for cuts. today was the deadline for teachers in california to receive preliminary layoff notices, nearly 19,000 notices have been sent out. however, that is only based on 300 school districts. if there are 1000 districts in the state, so the number of layoff notices will go up. news of the nearly 19,000 layoff notices was announced that at age meeting today. parents and teachers joined state schools in calling on the legislature to put the
