>> reporter: the largest earthquake to strike in japan hit one week ago. >> reporter: the mass of 9.0 magnitude quake struck japan to 40 6:00 p.m. on friday march 11th. the epicenter was 230 mi. offshore from the country's capital and largest city tokyo. it was strong enough to move the entire island of japan by 8 ft.. and shifting earth on its axis. within an hour a tsunami reaching as high as 30 ft. washed over the japanese coast sweeping away trees, cars, homes. >> i saw my dog swept away by the tsunami. >> reporter: more than 5000 people have been killed in the

disasters, and the death toll continues to rise. 10,000 are missing. in the days following the country has endured strong aftershocks as many as 6 million homes lost electricity, stores ran out of food, water, gas thousands of people were forced to move to shelters. morning after the quake and the killer nuclear who emergency. four of the six reactor suffered damage. 200,000 people have been evacuated from the surrounding area. and miss numerous evacuation's explosions they are trying to cool fuel rods with the water. the effort could take months or years. currents turned over leaking radiation has caused many to flee the country including several u.s. diplomats

sudden no radiation at s.f. all. >> reporter: plains people, baggage are all being screened here. here on the lookout for potential contamination, this is done 365 days a year ever since 1911. wednesday they ask the field agents to be on heightened alert because of the on going crisis in japan. passengers are being screened as they go through customs without liberalizing it. customs agents that goes off if they detect radiation on clothing on body. that person would be subjected to further screening and if necessary be immediately evaluated by medical personnel.

radioactive material. a spokesman says nissan will use all appropriate measures to make sure its products are entirely safe when shipped. sources in china and the company says there's virtually no sense of risk. nissan says it is monitoring again this week because of public concern. production at nissan remains suspended after last friday's earthquake. the dispatchers in japan could cause sorry the disaster could cause car prices here at home to climb. dealers are beginning to have to hike up prices because shipments have slowed down. buyers will have to pay the sticker price instead of enjoying those little discounts for hybrid cars that are imported from japan. here's a quick look at the gas prices
