two-year sentence. the officer was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. he testified that he meant to use his taser instead of his hand gun. will tran is live in oakland where businesses are still reported of this morning after yesterday's protest. is anything organized happening today? >> nothing organized so far but there will be a news conference at 10:00 a.m.. this is far from over. with the sun rising, people are realizing that johannes mehserle is a free man. other and in this place and team mobil down the street, it looks like business as usual. other places are being more creative with their defenses.

many places have put up pictures of oscar grant to let people know we stand by you and support what you do. we have seen this before, right after the sentencing. it is very, right now. there is not a heavy police presence. as you move into the hard of downtown oakland, a lot of those places were looted and sprayed with graffiti right after the verdict. you would think it was a normal day, that is good news, but we will wait and see. >> during yesterday's protests in oakland, protesting the early release of johannes mehserle, there was a small voice in a large crowd, the daughter of oscar grant, tatiana, was there.

>> 6:40 a.m., we are looking at damage from a strong earthquake that caused two buildings to collapse in christchurch, new zealand. there were two people trapped and rescued from this home. the home is a dangling off the end of a cliff that has given way. at least one room is gone. the aftershock was a magnitude 5.2 and there were several small tremblers that followed as well. the largest one happened around lunchtime, people were running from buildings and a panic. there has been damage in addition to the picture that you see here. there is damage but no initial reports of injuries. an earthquake in february killed 181 people in
