you're watching "teen kids news." here are this week's stories. teens who drink -- i'll report on how to say no when other teens are saying yes. a teen filmmaker is teaching a lesson and saying it loud. pain shouldn't be a part of the game. i'll show you how to keep sports injuries from happening. we all associate superheroes with their courage and strength but what about their fashion sense? i'll have the story. can 90 musicians from over 3o countries come together for the first time and create musical harmony? i'll have the story.

that and more, starting now, on "teen kids news." >> i'm mwanzaa. >> and i'm jessica. another risky and illegal behavior is even more common than marijuana. we have been reporting on teenage drinking. this week, jenna has advice on how to say no. >> reporter: ask teens who've seen their friends drunk and i bet they can tell you a story or two. >> i have a friend who jumped into the fountain by the museum. >> he started basically going around the streets screaming. >> i saw my friend take many shots of tequila and got into a fight with a toilet and broke it. >> reporter: some of these stories may sound funny, but

they're part of a serious problem. >> i talk to teens all the time about behavior that they regret or they're really embarrassed by because they've been drinking. i've talked to a lot of younger teens who say they actually feel very intimidated when they go to parties with older kids. so i recommend even ninth and tenth graders especially not hanging out with seniors. sometimes seniors are beginning to experiment and talk about issues that ninth graders aren't really ready for. >> charlanne zeff counsels teen drinkers. she knows teens can feel the pressure to drink by just watching other kids at parties. if you want to, you can get away from these situations without feeling like a loser. one way is setting up a code with a parent. >> the child calls up their parent and they have this code like "i totally forgot to tell you, mom, mrs. so-and-so called" or "i forgot to feed the dog."

i mean, it can be any code you've made up and that's the parent's cue to come pick you up at that person's house. >> reporter: peer pressure isn't the only reason kids drink. many teens, like adults, say alcohol helps them relax. but this can lead to more drinking. >> it is so important for a young teenager and people in high school to learn how to cope with stress without using a mood altering substance. if you don't learn how to do it now, you're more likely to reach for that substance as you get older. >> reporter: counselors stress while there are many teen drinkers, not all teens drink. and if you want to find friends who don't drink you can. if you think you or a friend has problems drinking, tell a parent or another adult who can help. for "teen kids news," i'm jenna. scientists believe they have measured the world's fastest bite. the jaws of the panamanian termite can chomp at nearly 157 miles per hour. the tremendous speed is actually a form of protection. it makes their tiny teeth into a lethal weapon to repel invaders to their nest.

some movies are just for fun, some have a purpose. one teen made a film that he hopes will transform lives. felipe has the story. >> reporter: this is jordan coleman. he's writer, producer, director, and star of the film "say it loud." >> hey everybody! my name is jordan coleman. i'm a good student, good athlete. >> reporter: jordan is no stranger to show biz. he was the voice of tyrone the moose for the nickelodeon cartoon "the backyardigans." jordan learned a lot about what goes on behind the scenes. then his mom had an idea. >> i challenged jordan to use some of the money from "the

backyardigans" to do something positive for his community. >> so i thought of making a film that shows about education for african-american boys. >> reporter: stay in school. teens hear it all the time, but that doesn't mean they're listening. >> a national survey released today found that most black young men in the united states don't graduate from high school. they have the worst grades, the lowest test scores, and the highest dropout rates of all students in the country. >> i saw people who are african-american boys struggling in school and how they needed help or they're just thinking about being the next football or basketball player. >> reporter: this is so common that education experts have a name for this behavior. it's called the fourth grade syndrome. it's when many african-american boys fall behind in their school work. some dream of becoming professional athletes or musical performers. unfortunately, very few have a plan "b" in case their dreams don't become reality.

with help from his mom and other family connections, jordan met and interviewed some really influential people for the film. people he knew kids would listen to. >> you know, my parents what they used to do to me if i got a "c" or something like that, they'd take basketball away from me. that's discipline enough for me. once my parents did that, then i realized pretty quickly that i had to straighten up. >> the older i got, the better i did in school because the older i got the more i realized that school was directly connected to how successful i could be in life. >> he has taken the film on the road, touring the country to speak to teens. like this speaking engagement at a library in newark, new jersey. >> jordan coleman is right here with us today. [ applause ] >> why is it called "say it out loud"? >> because you want to say it loud, do well in school. it's pretty cool talking to your peers about the movie. i have questions from "how did you make the movie?" to "do you have a girl friend?" >> reporter: jordan's message is

doctors say millions of kids are getting hurt every year playing sports. as amanda tells us, whether you're playing on a team or just playing for fun, sports injuries need your attention. here's our story. >> reporter: no pain, no gain. that's one old saying doctors want thrown out. they argue that sports should not hurt, especially when you're a kid. ♪ >> these days sports have become very competitive at younger and younger ages. >> reporter: whether on the soccer field or at the skate park, kids are at risk. doctors are saying more and more of us are getting hurt playing sports. >> we see many more injuries in kids sports and it really depends on what types of sports kids are doing in terms of what kinds of injuries they have. >> reporter: dr. jordan metzl

wrote "the young athlete: a guide to sports injuries." he says girls are four times more likely than boys to have knee injuries. that's because the muscles around their knee are different. >> and so what we do for girls is we get them to work on strengthening the muscles on the back of their leg, the hamstring, so that equalizes the force across the knee and reduces the risk of the injury. >> reporter: strength training can stop injuries from happening and prepare you for contact sports like soccer and football. trainers say kids as young as 8 years old can lift weights safely if they're instructed by an expert. >> if you're in shape and you're fit, then i think you give yourself the best chance of not getting injured. >> reporter: pro-football quarterback troy aikman knows about getting hurt. he had to retire early after getting tackled too many times. so, even if you're just playing for fun, safety gear is key.

♪ so whether it's paintball, horseback riding or skateboarding, protect yourself. >> beginners, i recommend a helmet no matter what and kneepads, elbow pads, if you're at the skate park and bigger ramps. because our kneepads save our lives out here. that's how we get out of any fall, we slide on our knees. >> reporter: wrist guards are essential, too. there's no one common injury for boys, but doctors see a lot of skateboarders and snowboarders with broken wrists. and overuse of a certain body part can keep the pain coming back. doctors say it's a good idea to change sports with the seasons. >> because first of all it's really a lot of fun to have different sports, and it's good for your body also. we see injuries associated with doing one sport alone. >> reporter: and doctors say if you're in pain, it probably means you're hurt. so go and see a doctor right away. ignoring an injury may only make it worse. for "teen kids news," i'm

any superhero will tell you the outfit is the big part of the picture. in fact, nicole discovered there's a real art to designing those costumes. >> reporter: superheroes are all the rage. and recently the metropolitan museum of arts costume institute paid tribute to the superhero. and their over the top fashion. >> the idea that superheroes is all about fantasy and fantastical theatricality. that very nature inspired designers to stretch the boundaries of fashion and go to

the edge of the fashion. they've been very freeing in that respect. >> reporter: the exhibit called superheroes fashion and fantasy has enjoyed great success. and on its opening night, many of our favorite superheroes and superstars were present. ♪ does christian bale actually wear this suit? >> he did. i think there are probably four or five. he would swap and change throughout the film. >> reporter: as i walkedly the exhibit i saw how the outfits are not only costumes but truly works of art. >> the movie costumes are really interesting. there's one which was designed for mystique, played mystique in the "x men." that is incredible in the terms of the fact she was naked but had applications applied to her. every application was hand molded. >> reporter: believe it or not, a lot of great fashion designers found inspiration from costumes

worn by famous superheroes. >> these ones, the patriotic bodies. these are all fashion inspired by wonder woman's costume which is basically a composite of the american flag. her costume is basically the american flag. this section looks at designers inspired by stars and stripes, sort of embrace or critique. >> reporter: it's not only the superhero costumes that makes you bigger than life. take this one for instance. our real life all american hero michael phelps wore it for the olympics. so tell me about the swimsuit. >> the swimsuit was one designed in collaboration with michael phelps. speedo developed it with michael phelps for the olympic team. it's a complex fiber structure. what it basically tries to do is imitate shark skin so when you jump in the water the water literally flows off you. >> reporter: you don't need a cape or shark skin suit to feel special. >> the overall theme of the show is how fashion can transform you

and ferb across the second dimension, the daring duo travel to a parallel universe to save their world. and they have to battle an even more evil doctor. joining them is terry, their pet platypus. terry reveals he's a crime fighting secret agent. in the video game players take on the roles of their favorite players, including terry the turtle. you journey through five worlds and dozens of levels filled with gelatin monsters, robots and giant gnomes. use baseball launchers, ninja gloves and the carbonator which melts enemies with orange soda. you can earn points to unlock. you'll also recognize familiar voices from the tv series. >> nice graphics. >> the graphics are terrific.

and there's even an original song written just for the game. so strap on your jet packs and get ready for action. fineas and ferb across the second dimension, the game and movie blast off this week. for "teen kids news" i'm nicole. >> that's what i'm talking about! >> cool. when you think of youtube you probably think of funny skits or parodies. the internet giant is launching a new project and it's all about classical music. lily's got the story. >> reporter: this may look like your typical symphony. the musicians spent hours practicing. now a big concert at new york's renowned carnegie hall. there's one thing. these musicians have known each other three days. they're part of the youtube

symphony orchestra, a group combining a love of classical music with a modern twist. how did the idea of a youtube symphony orchestra come about? >> this is something we're excited about. it came from within youtube. we thought an the idea of assembling the world's biggest online collaborative orchestra and it grew from there. >> reporter: in order to audition, the musicians had to submit videos online. >> i was messing around on youtube looking at random videos and saw a link for the youtube symphony orchestra. it looked interesting. saw i had to make a five minute audition tape and decided it would be easy enough. >> reporter: judges sifted through 3,000 submissions from all over the world. they whittled the group down to 200 finalists. then the videos were posted on youtube where people could vote for their favorite. ♪

90 winners from different ages and backgrounds for slekelectedd treated to an all expenses paid trip to new york city. >> they sent me an e-mail telling me i'd been accepted. i was so surprised. there were so many people auditioning from all over the world. >> reporter: the ambitious musical project is can do. in the beginning he wasn't sure if the project would actually work. so when you were first approached about being part of this initiative, what did you think? >> i thought it's going to be a revolutionary or it's going to be a fake. it's going to be a big victory or be sort of people are going to be, hey, mock you, as you're crazy. >> reporter: after just one rehearsal, tan changed his tune. >> first meet here, oh my gosh, thanks internet, thanks websites, thanks online business. this is a wonderful way to make a classical music. >> reporter: to prepare for the concert, the players

participated in master classes with famous musicians like michael tilson. he's also the conductor of the youtube symphony orchestra. >> i can learn many things from michael tilson thomas, tan dun and other solisits. i think it will be a great fun for all the players, a great fun! >> i think this project has just been an enormous boost and enormous lets say kick in just the right place for all of us in classical music to say, "hey we can really do something and we should really think much more swiftly than perhaps we have been about what this might be." >> reporter: and the musicians agree. >> as far as i know, this is the first orchestra done like this and i hope it sets a precedent for other orchestras to be run like this. >> reporter: even with so many people from so many culture, one thing is for sure. there's only one language in music.
