landfall in north carolina leaving an estimated 200,000 people without power. it has the potential of affecting tens of millions of people as it makes its way north. hurricane irene made landfall near cape lookout n.c. this morning. cities along the east coast are bracing for this major storm. the strongest hurricane that they experience and perhaps 20 years. >> is surfer in virginia beach died after being caught in a recurrence. thousands of people are without power. new york ordered a mandatory evacuation for low-lying areas of the city. >> the best thing that could happen is this storm turns east and heads to see. that is not likely to happen. unfortunately there will be a serious storm coming in. it is better to take precautions and get out of the way of the storm. mother nature

is much stronger than all of us. >> people have been warned to prepare for flower outages and storm surges. even the new york subway system is scheduled to stop burning this afternoon. the president says that the government is ready but people on the east coast need to stay alert. >> i cannot stress this highly enough, if you or in the projected path of this hurricane, you have to take precautions now. do not wait, do not delay. we hope for the best but we must be prepared for the worst. >> we have confirmed the first fatality in virginia beach. we are also getting reports of at least one tornado created by hurricane irene. >> the only sound in new york

city will be the oncoming storm. residents and everyone will be walking. subway and care plans have been shut down. commuter transit in new jersey and philadelphia are also shutting down service. area hotels have transported patients ahead of irene's arrival. >> this is video from san francisco international airport on friday were hundreds of passengers were stopped when airlines cancelled flights to the eastern seaboard. some people barely made it on to their flights. many passengers will have to stick it out or find a different way home. although there were airlines the worst of the passengers to their destination, the cost was high but some people said it was worth the money. it >> i was supposed to fly out on
