of berkeley. the location is south east of berkeley. we spoke about the magnitude, 4.0 magnitude. let's take a look at some of the stats. eight deaths of 6.1 mi..--a depth of 6.1 mi.. the earthquake hit at 2:41 p.m.. the aftershock was at 4:50 p.m., eight 2.2 magnitude, still at a relatively large desk, 4.5 mi.. this one was southeast of berkeley. let's take a look at earthquake magnitudes for the type of earthquakes that we feel. anything over 3 going zero, we feel. 4.0, noticeable shaking. the damage is higher at 5.0 and higher.

this earthquake was widely selz. >>pam: let's go to the usgs. charles clifford has a closer look at where the earthquake hit. >>charles: right now i am live in front of the usgs. they have been keeping an eye on the aftermath. let's take a look at video from the usgs web site that shows exactly where the earthquake hit. geologists are saying that the earthquake hit just slightly off of the hayward fault near berkeley, at the bottom of the fault zone. if they are saying it was a sharp, impulsive earthquake which is why it was widely felt. the 4.0 magnitude is usually considered ok. geologist jack's book right explains why. >> they do not usually cause much damage, but people notice them, particularly during an event like this. it'if it makes 2 dozen families

>> of the trains are back on schedule. take a look at the track. following the earthquake, bart inspected all of its tracks about five minutes after the earthquake. this is common procedure. the inspections ended at 3:18 p.m.. the inspections did cause a 15 minute delays earlier this afternoon. the trains are back on time. >>pam: terisa estacio was live outside of city hall when the earthquake did.

>>terisa: those posters behind me were shaking in the ground shook violently. workers from city hall were coming out quite quickly. building inspectors went in to make sure that the structure was safe. as people came by, they spoke with me and said that this was certainly a big wake-up call. >> i looked up, i saw the windows moving back and forth. i thought, what is that? that was scary. my son called me and said, did you feel that? >>terisa: what did you think? >> it lasted a few seconds. my cubicle was shaking. a few people were freaking out. >> it was a hard shake for maybe 10 seconds and then, it stopped. we were all kind of scared. our building has great seismic protection, so we were good. it was a little scary. >>terisa: terisa estacio, kron4 news.

>>pam: the 911 calls have now been released from the workplace quarry shooting in cupertino. both those takes describes the frantic moments between the caller who witnessed the carjacking of a woman as the suspect was trying to escape. >>911 dispatcher: what is your emergency? >> a lady was driving in the parking lots, a guy was leaning over, in the parking lot of hewlett-packard. i am concerned about the safety of the woman. >>911 dispatcher: your friend was shot? >> there was a lady, the guy was leaning over her, he was trying to take something from her or something. she was unconscious. i am just trying to help. >>911 dispatcher: stay inside and call security. >> what about my car? >>911 dispatcher: did not worry about your car, stay

inside. we will have felt on the way. >>pam: 3 vehicle were killed and nine others wounded, the suspect is shareef allman, he said his own life the next day in sunnyvale during a massive search. we will hear more emergency call tapes coming up at 6:00 p.m.. >>grant: our crimes are is focusing on 13 separate robberies that occurred yesterday in san francisco. most of them were near to 80. these dots represent the robberies. there were a couple in the mission district and bayview district. there is a violent trend to these. six of the robberies occurred with force. suspect's had guns, knives and cut first grade. police were able to make one a rest. suspects targeted

wallets, purses, backpacks or false. maureen kelly shows us how several of these robberies involving gold jewelry. >>maureen: there were three instances of gold chains being snatched wednesday, the most shocking happened just after 5:00 p.m. when a 76 year-old woman was knocked to the ground by two young women in their 20s who snatched the women's gold chain independent. she hurt her hit in the attack and the suspects got away. a similar crime happened in the excelsior district, a 19 year-old woman was walking on this lot went to 18 year- old man blocked her way, one gangs of her cross necklace. the victims thing or was cut as she tried to hold on to the chain. the suspects got away on the foot. here at this bayview corner, a 35 year-old woman was closed to the ground by two women. one of them pulled a knife before taking her money and

gold chain. she was sent to the hospital with a bruise on her eye and cut on her nose. the suspects got away in a chrysler or dodge van. there is no information showing that the crimes are connected and although there are no statistics showing a rise in gold theft, but they're not surprised with the value of gold rising. >> the value of gold is over $1,600 an ounce or something like that. it is about what is valuable and readily available. if you have something of a value, be that much more careful. >>maureen: maureen kelly, kron4 news. /

most of the animals ended up dead. deputies say that they had no choice but to kill them. they were afraid if they used tranquilizers in the animals would simply hide in the darkness. this is the owner, terry thompson. 49 of his animals were killed. the coroner said there is a large bite on the head of thomson, shortly after shooting himself, one of the tigers did him. announced they get real difference will read the final chapter of her books to show people that she has made progress in her recovery. gifford was shot in the head january 8th at an event outside of tucson.

>>pam: our developing story, the earthquake. our seismograph shows that jolt as that 4.0 earthquake hit. centered south east of berkeley. it hit the bay area this afternoon and was felt over a wide area. jacqueline is joining us live from the weather center. jacqueline

>> an earthquake of this magnitude is typically felt. we will take a look at where the earthquake hit. south east of berkeley. the big one hit earlier this afternoon. it struck at 2:41 p.m.. it was a magnitude 4.0. it was 5.1 mi. deep. the closest city was berkeley. it was just south east of berkeley. an aftershock came a few hours later. 2.2 magnitude at nearly the same depth. here is a look at the magnitude chart. this earthquake was felt widely through the bay area. if you have pictures of any damage, be sure to

send as those images and breakingnews@kron4.com. >>pam: reggie kumar is live at the bart train station. reggie >> bart trains are back on schedule. they were stopped momentarily. take a look at the west oakland bart tracks. they were stopped so that the tracks could be inspected. that is common procedure. the inspections stopped 40 minutes after the iroquois. there was no damage found. the inspections caused a 15 minute delays. drains are now back on >>pam: at j.r stone has more in san leandro.

>>j.r.: i was inside my car and the thought someone was shaking my car. at this food store, there were reports of serial fallen off of the shelves. i went inside of the food max to see if that was the case, but by the time i was inside, the cereal was back on the shelves. just walking down the aisle, you can see how high the shelves were. if something bad were to happen, this could be a dangerous spot to be in. while i was inside, i was unable to speak with the manager because he was taking an incident report from someone who had something fall on top of them. we do not know if that was related to the earth quake. in san leandro, j.r stone, kron4 news. >>pam: in oakland in the earth quake was felt by many residents. terisa estacio was in oakland when the earthquake hit.

have arrested one person, there is still another suspect >>pam: this city of seal beach is now planning a town meeting after the hair salon massacre. counselors will be talking about how the community is coping with its greek. the meeting will be held thursday and a large crowd is expected. >>pam: 20 years ago today oakland suffered the firestorm that destroyed thousands of homes. here is how kron4 viewers learned of that story. >>reporter: a major brush fire has erected in the oakland hills. >>pam: oakland firestorm is one of the most destructive fires in united states

history. the flames devoured one home every 11 seconds. nearly 800 in the first hour. neighborhood after neighborhood was obliterated. the oakland nightmare began the day before, a 7 a. wildfire in a canyon near the eastern entrance of the caldecott tunnel. >> we are reasonably sure that the fire was out. >>pam: by 10:00 a.m. the flames were back and stand by winds gusting up to 40 mi. per hour. >> before you knew it, flames were everywhere. >>pam: the only way out, a narrow twisting road. >> flames were coming into the cars as we were driving by. >>pam: most of the 25 fatalities happened in the first hour but the fire storm is just getting started. the gusting winds and 90 degree temperatures fled the flames--spread the

flames over hundreds of acres. some people refuse evacuation orders, staying behind to try to save their homes. the biggest boost comes at 5:00 p.m. when did the wind dropped. the flames slowed before reaching the claremont hotel. from the air, the scope of the damage is almost unbelievable. homeowners returned to find little of their former lives. some families are doubly lucky. this young girl was forced to abandon her cat. >> we were not having a house anymore and i thought that sam was dead. >>pam: it was 72 hours before that fire was declared under control.

berkeley. the epicenter was south east of where dan is. >>dan: we are at memorial stadium at the uc-berkeley campus. memorial stadium sits on top of the hayward fault. it is going through a huge seismic retrofit project. workers books over but then continue working with very little stoppage during the 410 earthquake. earlier today we were over near telegraph road and people there certainly felt the earth quake. >> at first i thought there was a car coming through the wall. i walked in here and everything was shaking. i was shaking. >>dan: did anything come of of the wall? >> nothing. it was scary. >> the building shook, it was scary. >>dan: what was it like on the third floor? >> i thought it was a 5.0 or

look at the west oakland bart train tracks. the tracks had to be inspected for damage. it is common procedure following an earthquake. the inspections did delayed trains for about 15 minutes. andrea warren says she does not want to be on a bart train what an earthquake hits. >> being on bart, stuck in a tunnel during an earthquake is my biggest fear. reggie >> you were not on bart during this one? >> i was not. what if the train gets stuck? imagine the windows breaking, the train buckling into the ocean coming into the tunnel, it is pretty frightening. reggie >> tell me what you decide to take it. >> it was not a big enough earth quake.

and on line at www.kron4.com. >>pam: 911 audio tapes have been released from the workplace shooting at the quarry in cupertino. shareef allman trapped co-workers in a trailer and then opened fire with an automatic weapon and a handgun. police captured a frantic moments as people call for help.

>>pam: three people were killed and nine others were wounded. shareef allman took his life the next day. and manhunt and in el dorado county for a suspect wanted in connection with the workplace shooting in richmond. 50 year-old doran long, a concord resident working as a security guard. he allegedly shot a co-worker at an apartment complex in richmond on wednesday night. prior to that shooting, he allegedly

opened fire on his neighbor's home. haaziq madyun show you what may have saved his neighbor's life. >>haaziq: a barrage of bullets fired into this home in concord. countless of bullet holes in the walls throughout the house. all that stood between a family of five and a steady stream of gunshots was this stove. the family huddled here on the kitchen floor while it is alleged that their neighbor opened fire on their home wednesday night. the family declined to speak on camera. they walked me through the house shall in the the damage. one bullet nearly struck a 12 year-old boys sleeping in his bed. a witness to the shooting told me that around 9:50 p.m., long was spotted backing his pickup truck out of the driveway of his home and drove into the middle of the street and opened fire. neighbors here describe the sound.
