4:42 am
this is such a tense situation the media is telling us to stand on the corner that we are better protected. as far as the police officers being near us, there's a lot going on commotion, whistling, people going around with their bandannas, chanting,. they chant that is going on that says police go home. before this went down this seems like the people to occupy oakland had their scouts out. they're riding around with a 10 speed bicycle around the area probably just keeping an eye out on the police officers arriving. they also were not surprised by this. they have blocked off broadway in east 14th. we got word that access into and out of this area has been blocked off. the police officers are down the street to make sure that no traffic moves through this area so they can have plenty of space to do with a need to do. so far, no clashing is going on, no fights, no confrontation. however it
4:43 am
seems like a lot of build up because these people have been told for days that this could possibly happen. there were told they to go that they need to leave this place. this was building up day after day. and why the oakland police department chose to do this morning we have not gotten word yet, none the less they have decided and that is why i am sure they have a lot of police officers who either rearrange their schedules yesterday's of the they could be on full alert this morning. you could see a lot of them right here moving closer and closer to the people of occupied oakland. when they first got here they were in the middle of the intersection. every couple of minutes, you can see the move closer and closer and closer to the people of occupied oakland. there are hundreds of tents. apparently they also had a play area where the kids were allowed to play. we are not sure what happened to the kids if the people occupy oakland remove the kids for a possible confrontation, but nonetheless there is a lot of hostility in the air.

people coming up to a harassing us and telling us as well--and yelling at us as well. everyone has cellphone and cameras and making sure that they are capturing this event for the people occupy oakland. right now we want to just keep it here if you want to chime in, james go ahead. >>james: we can hear some chanting in the background of that coming from the protesters are is that police giving out instruction through bullhorns? >> it is both, we hear the police officers using bullhorns. they are very loud it seems like there is a bull horn that is going into the camp area telling them that you must disperse i am sure it that is what is happening. there is also a lot of chanting and commotion going on right now. this seems like it is ready to explode. hopefully it will not be violent or to
4:45 am
violent but we have to wait and see. you almost a feeling that this is a war zone especially with the helicopters circling the area and highlighting of the people on the ground. there is no traffic going through this area. in fact, the police officers they probably prepared for this for several days which is why we heard this morning that the police officers were stationed at the oakland coliseum. i am sure dozens if not hundreds of cars. it around for 3:00 pm we got word that they were headed down here and sure enough that is exactly what they did. they took the side streets, came up here and then came back down broadway in this direction basically a park in the middle of the intersection at broadway and 14th. you can see them all out there. who knows what will happen, i hear the chants getting louder and louder by the moment so far the police are being patient probably hoping that they get it off their chest and then decide to go home. but we will have
4:46 am
to wait and see. >>justine: d.c. if police have divans they're ready to make massive arrest? do they have a way to transport people or is it just officer standing by? >> will: let me give you the lay of the land, these are unmarked vehicles, these are police cars it is pretty obviously. they are unlocked and park on broadway. there we go justine, it looks like they're moving in right now there inching in closer and closer to the clock--crowd. now we see many vehicles out here i am sure that they are ready to make iraq if necessary.--to make arrests if necessary. now look like they are inching closer and
4:47 am
closer like a viper squeezing its crate to squeeze the air space between them and the encampment to make sure that they do not have a lot of wiggle room. so far seems like both sides are being pretty patient. chanting is going on, we see cameras flashing but no confrontation at this point although it is safe to say that we will probably see some confrontation before this morning is over. >>james: looking at the back of the officers they have the plastic restraints that they used to handcuff people and lead them away. i am just trying to get a sense of what officers are armed with, i see batons and the side arms. hopefully none of that will have to be used. then we can see the protesters in the background chanting. it does not look like it will be walking away. >>justine: it almost looks like they have their arms linked together can you confirm or--that?
4:48 am
>> will: it seems like they are locking arms, but to their credit they're not enjoying closer to the police officers. at this point there are allowing the police officers to ensure that much closer with every passing minute. you talk about the people occupy oakland, if they are not over at the in camera, these are probably stragglers you can see across the street. they are giving the police officers and careful making sure they take cellphone videos, and take pictures. so far they're not in there. even if they want to get back to the constituents their people, it looked like the people, the police officer from oakland will not allow that to happen. we have heard of that they basically have decided that no one goes in and no one goes out. they just want to make sure they have full control as left-hand--as best they can in this area.
4:49 am
there seems to be a lot of smoke from the vehicle. and as we move the camera from the light you can see this going on right now. so far the air is breathable no one is using pepper spray because at this point they do not need to. the air is fine at this point you can see a lot of the media they are moving away from the scene. some of our colleagues at the other stations were parked right next to the encampment it seems like right now the police officers are say for your safety, you better get going and you better stand on this corner on 14th and broadway. this is our area for now this is the place that they want us to be to make sure that they can do they do and for us to be safe and i continue this morning has been quite hostile. >>justine: i want to leave your shot up because i know yours and the police are asking people to move but we have a jackie was any of its

a different perspective. jackie what can you see right now? >> i am on the opposite side of where will tran is. there are hundreds of police officers. they are mobilizing quickly their surrounding the entire plaza. i saw about 150 officers go into the backside with pathans-- batons. so far we have not seen any conflict. there are about a dozen or so protesters shouting as they walk in. now i see the first of flash thing go off right now. i can hear the helicopter with a spotlight
4:51 am
circling the top of the plaza right now. it appears the situation is obviously tending by the moment. you can probably see it from wheels camera better than i can. >>justine: will can you describe what this smoky is there for us? >> will: over the past may be five or 10 seconds, jackie is right we heard a flash device go off we are not sure if that was from the people from occupy open for the oakland police department. you can see over the past three, or four minutes they have gotten that much closer to the people at occupy oakland. it seems like at this point they are face to face. we see a lot of motorcycle police officers mobilizing. it seems like something is about to happen we see little flashes of light in the area although it is a not followed by any sounds.
4:52 am
obviously those are cameras, and you can hear the bullhorns. in fact i just heard an officer yell using his bullhorn to one of the people on the outside and get back here, did not go into that area but obviously they're not listening. the police officers... it seems like office drafted so the person did not come closer they're getting the motorcycles and going in squeezing this device on the people occupy oakland. it seemed like there now face-to-face. clear that, you can see smoke in the year. yes, there was a flash bang it device that went off. you're not sure if that is from the people occupy oakland or the oakland police department. so far i do not see them physically grabbing anyone at this point. >>justine: it is not teargas, it is not something that feels harmful correct?

4:54 am
their right gear on. they have led to this place up there is a helicopter in the air. so many police officers and their motorcycles, we see many police vehicles parked here. they have place stranglehold on this intersection at 14th and broadway. they are inching that much closer every minute to the people occupy oakland. so far as i said i do not see any police officers physically grabbing any of the occupied oakland people. as you can see, it seems like they're getting ready. they are switching their gear, they're putting on a different type of equipment and mask. at any moment now james, that was a good observation that they may use tear gas, or pepper spray to disperse the crowd. >>justine: have you seen any protesters lead in response to this police presence? >> will: they are not leaving. i am sure if they
4:55 am
are not in the encampment people ought to with their cameras and cell phone video to document what is going on. they have always said that the oakland police department has been heavy- handed in all this. i can tell you that they have been coming us to me asking me why are they doing this? we are not hurting anybody. that is neither here nor there, the bottom line is the oakland city hall, the ministers have told them they have to leave so it is when he is. this seems like to concede the police officers across the street moving closer and closer to weapons or a quick. hopefully they can in this

get past you. we do not see anyone breaking free from the heart of the encampment to go out to the intersection and possibly do something else. you can see one person is being led away right now it looks like that person is being arrested why, we do not know we do not know why they chose that person. it is safe to say they possibly felt threatened and then they moved in. so far no one has broken the vise grip that the oakland police department has put around the encampment. as i speak there are more people being taken away from the encampment. they're not resisting or kicking or anything. other than the flash bang grenades and apparently the tension in the air there is no confrontation. there is no out or hostility at this point we will have to wait and see. it seems like they have as many police officers here as the people from occupied oakland. but you never know, they have a cellphone as well may be
4:59 am
more police officers will come through here. >>justine: we have some new developments in the newsroom, we see the oakland police making arrests and we hear that the 12th street bart station in oakland is close. the 12th street bart station is closed we believe is in response to the occupied protesters and as we have been watching the live pictures in the newsroom we have seen the police make several rest. they started to move in just before about 4:45 a.m.. there had been a warning to protesters since thursday that they had to leave the plaza they ignore the request for several days and then there was a heads up from the police that they will be moving in this morning from time between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.. the police have moved in and now we have watched them put on their right gear and move in bashing some of the 10's and
5:00 am
removing protesters in handcuffs essentially. >>james: now occupy movement has always said it was a peaceful movement. they always said that we are practicing civil disobedience. this said there was no malicious intent behind what they were doing what they will stand in solidarity with the occupy wall street in san francisco on all of the other cities participating. true to their word, it seems that they're standing their ground and when approached by officers there willingly letting themselves be handcuffed and taken away. you can see what is left in the weight as the officers continued to feed through the park. this is what is left of the in can make with the officers in the background and foreground. you can see a makeshift tent city. we know the fire department went through last night to remove propane tanks and other cooking supplies and utensils that
5:01 am
they of make pose a danger or risk to those in the area. has been the steadiest shots, we do not see much in the way of resistance. >>justine: if you're just joining us in is 5:00 a.m. on the morning news. breaking news is unfolding police have moved into the occupied protests that have been camped out. they have now moved in and made several arrests and even done some damage i would say to the protesters encampment. we have been watching the live pictures and it is nothing the protesters have been fighting bacteria--fighting back. we watched the police put on right here. they had a chopper watching the situation from above. we fought a big smoke cloud earlier in the not appear to be teargas or anything like that. >>james: week of the offices with their gas masks. and jackie was my turn the situation on the opposite side of the park. what is
5:02 am
the scene there? the officers are slowly methodically moving their way into the park here. jackie can you hear us? >>james: we will try to reconnect with jackie in a minute. i know that george is getting ready on the side. sure many people will be impacted by this shutdown. you can see the shutdown around the area and in relation to the park the station will be taken off line as officers work their way through and read to need to be arrested and disperse those others in need to go on their way. >>justine: we are watching hundreds of police officers in full riot gear moved in.
5:03 am
it seems the protesters are leaving. it does not seem like they are resisting arrest. as we are looking at live pictures we see hundreds of police officers it looks like they're trying to take a park parts of the camp again. 12th street bart station is closed. we have pictures into the news room right now at broadway and 14th. jackie's there to provide more perspective. good morning jackie. >>reporter: good morning i am in the plaza as we speak. they are systematically taking down every tent as they go, the police are making dozens of arrests. there has been no protests by the protesters. it has relatively been nonviolent at this point. the protesters are going without any incidents. hundreds if not thousands of police officers are in this plaza right now. they are
5:04 am
taking down everything in arresting anyone inside the camp. they are here with a gas mask on and so far we have not seen anyone be violent. >>james: jackie can you hear us? just seen was asking can you hear any of the exchanges between protesters and the police what they say? >>reporter: the protesters are extremely quiet they seem to be going without incident at this point. i have not seen a single incident of confrontation. they are going to the middle of the square right now. they have moved in on our--
5:05 am
all four sides of the plaza. the police are still standing by. there are hundreds of them in the plaza right now. standing here right now i could see long line of protesters. for the most part is nonviolent. >>justine: we have already seen about 1 dozen people being exported. and it sounds like they're chanting are saying something in response but the police seem to be calm despite what is a tense situation unfolding on our area right now. >>james: i dunno, will are you still with us? >> will: yes i am. >>james: can you tell us where they are taking the protesters? >> will: yes, they're taking into vans that are
5:06 am
strategically parked in in to be away from here. i can tell you that when ever pull testers are being taken away from the scene they are not being hostile. they are being peaceful. whenever they are being led away, there is clapping and chanting almost as if they are folk heroes. some people are keeping walks out of the encampments they may be friends and family members. it but they're yelling san the coffee to go home. the police officers at this point are being very patient they're letting them get off their chest without moving in saying enough is enough. they are still over there in the heart of the economic. we feel a lot of cameras flashing going on. for whatever reason it seems that they are choosing certain people to remove from that area and not the entire encampment because we still see a lot of people from occupied open in that area. the police officers are letting people do they
5:07 am
need to do. but they're also making sure they set up a perimeter i am assuming that that is perhaps they want to make sure that no one breaks free. if they happen to break away from the circle set up by the police officers to get away and possibly, maybe we do not know maybe they could do damage on the surrounding streets. >>justine: unfortunately we have to take a quick break on the kron4 morning news will we will be right back as the police have now moved in on the occupied open protesters. we have watched the arrest happen live on our air this morning.

5:11 am
say it is not theirs in is from the protesters. you can figueres being made right now. will tran is live on the scene with the update. huma >> will: this seems that the heavy lifting is done. some police officers are there on their knees and arresting people. it looks like they have done what they needed to do and right now, those people you see right in front of us facing us, those of the officers from the alameda county sheriff's department. they are resting in fixing their gear problem for the next wave. over the past five minutes to finally solve some of the protesters resist being arrested as they were being led away. they were kicking and screaming at one point they had to lift up all four limbs of the protesters and basically carry him away from the scene. so far it does not look like anyone has gone past the perimeter that has been set up by the police officers to make sure they do not leave this area and perhaps do damage to
5:12 am
surrounding streets. it looks like the police office is at this point have the situation under control. for what ever reason there are breaking down the lights as you can see maybe moving it closer to the encampment. it looks like a lot of the work, the heavy lifting is done for now but we still see a lot of protesters who were not in the >>katherine: at the time on the outside perhaps acting as scouts because we saw so many of them lying around on a 10 speed bicycle this morning. we saw them riding around and perhaps when this all happened they were not able to go back into the encampment. so instead, they're shouting to the police officers there. as far as the encampment, the signs are down. we do not see any flashing going on in the heart of the encampment. allow police officers that moved in a 25 for 30 minutes ago have been pulled out and right now, they're just your ride on the corner of broadway and east 14th and for what ever
5:13 am
reason they're moving in our direction. as you can see one person is being arrested right now that is the person that i'm talking about finally the first person we saw resisting arrest and basically been carried away from the scene. it looks like the officers are setting up a dilemma to write your from the intersection. we have also learned that you cannot come in or out of this area because the police officers want to keep the area under control to know exactly what is going on, who was coming in and was going out. as you can see, there are police officers here park right in the netherlands street. i see may be down to 12 or 10 street the police officers are blocking that area as well. for now, traffic is shut down. we have also learned that the bart station here is now open to the public. i will send it back to you if anything should happen i will let you know. >> darya: as our team coverage continues we have jackie reporting what is your vantage? >> darya: it looks like
5:14 am
jackie cannot hear us right now but george if you could tell us more about the perimeter and how that is affecting traffic? >> george: there is very little in fermenta coming out officially clearly the only thing we can confirm is what is being observed which is 14th street and broadway in the perimeter of the franklin plaza. and to add to what will just said, is the 12th street bart station that shut down. the reason this is important is because this is a transfer station for bart. it is where passengers shift from one train to another for example of your try to catch a san francisco bound train and got a fremont train that will be where you would transfer at. you have to use the 19th which is the next station in the northbound direction in use that as a transfer point here, rather than 12 street that is in downtown oakland and is closed. again, the only street closures
5:15 am
confirmed are those that we see here which are 14. >> mark: thank you george and other live look from the scene, with the dozens of vehicles and looks close to 100 police are the moving in on the protesters at the plaza. we have jackie on the other side of the plaza, >>jackie: police encircled frank ogawa plaza. there was a huge show of enforced. they approached the barricades and systematically went through people, taking down tens,-- taking down tents. there
5:16 am
were probably 75-100 people and plastic handcuffs. hawker every tender. hawks, all of the protesters have been arrested without cords, and saddam. pocket kit less than 10 minutes for take down everything and make all of the address. >>darya: why do you still see the protesters in handcuffs? are they waiting for them to be taken away? >>jackie: kunis her there are probably 75 or so
5:17 am
protesters they have a table set up and they are processing them here. there are huge share of its buses out here. i can only guess your mate or estimate that they will be used for transporting these people. it is a very quiet. the protesters are giving almost no resistance. they are cooperating with police for the most part. >>mark: this is something that protesters had been waiting have. house alreason thy
5:18 am
took away the propane tanks. they have been bracing for this system since 18 am. >>darya: this is the culmination of two weeks of and they are a lot--they are allowed to demonstrate, but they are not allowed to stay overnight. >>mark: the twelfth street bart station is closed. we will follow the latest in once police moved in on frank ogawa plaza. >>darya: we are back with more team coverage in a moment.

officers hit instead of being in the camera, and they are facing the crowd. the reason why it is, there are so many people over here, it is almost face to face a to with what is going on. and what is going on around the perimeter of the encampments., police officers are making sure that the key and i on people on the outside. as far as the encampment, police officers are not in there anymore. whenever a russ update needed to do, it is done. they removed a lot of officers from that area. pocket, there are some officers walking around without helmets. stocks that we are here and we will monitor the situation. her

5:33 am
right now things are quiet. a lot of people on the outside, you can see some of them standing across a street. they are not being allowed to go back into the encampment which is frustrating to a lot of people, that is what the police officers want. they want to make sure that they maintain control of the area hooks which is why you do not see any traffic on any part of broadway getting 480, they are not letting
5:34 am
anyone in or out. hopefully will get more information from the public information officers, as far as strategy, i tried to ask what is next and she said no comments probably because they do not want information to anyone at home. helicopters are still circling the area to make sure that everything is documented and that oakland police officers as well as other mutual aid police officers are not surprise sweeps. so far the yelling that we have seen to that is no longer taking place. >>darya: police moved in with a great numbers. we saw smoke in the air as well.
5:35 am
>>justine: we have new video into the newsroom as the scene started to unfold. this is as police started to surround protestors before they started to move men and before the smoke started to go up. there is a bug that is taking the protesters to jail. the north county jail is across the street from the oakland police department. except this city of oakland is telling the downtown businesses to delay the start of work because of this ongoing seen in frank ogawa plaza. they want down time and businesses to not start work on time until it can clear out protestors. the same thing goes for city employees. city employees and oakland are being advised to delay their rivals today. hope this city of oakland is saying that frank ogawa plaza is

contained and how they are in the process of cleaning of the encampment that has been there for weeks. to get us updated on traffic delays we are turning to gerge rask. >>george: 980 and 80 b are perimeter freeways. because of the confirmed closures at fourteenth and broadway when and perimeter streets, it is an area to avoid. immediately adjacent to frank ogawa plaza it is the twelfth street art station right here. that has been closed by park officials. we have a call into a bar to talk to them about the closure hot and how long the closures of the increase. a lot of people use 12 street as a transfer point. trains
