>>justine: i was getting some text messages from friends in the oakland area. one person in san francisco is saying they are waiting for a bigger one. f a lot of people seem scared. we just had to earthquakes in one day last week. everyone has been waiting for the big one. we are a little frightened to this morning. >>darya: this one was not
6:01 am
big but it was exactly a week ago. >>james: we had a few more earthquakes over the weekend. yesterday, a shaker near black hawk. >>darya: the usgs.gov as always save the same thing, this one was a 3.6 magnitude. everyone likes to share their thoughts we did feel the earthquake in the studio. we have jerry of a line. where are you calling from? collar about our hercules, calif..
6:02 am
>>james: were you awake when it struck? >>caller: it jolted me pretty good. i immediately woke up. i did not need an alarm clock. i went to check on my son and my wife. they were still sleeping. >>darya: gerry, do you want to swing into action or did you freeze? jerry >> i swung into action quickly. i remember the earthquake and 89. it was devastating. that memory was going through my mind. >>james: what we hear from the veterans of the area who remember strong earthquakes, when things like this happens, you eat immediately sink back to that. it is because you know what can happen. people new to the area spring into action
6:03 am
because they do not know what to expect. you have the unseasoned and the season to reacting in the same way. >>darya: did anything fall off of the wall? >>caller: as i had something fall off the table. this one was a 3.6 magnitude. >>james: 64 your phone call, by the way. we spoke with the usgs. they tell us, you'll always have aftershocks. we will speak to them to see if this is still considered an aftershock or an independent event. >>darya: bart swung into action quickly as is their procedure. jim allison is
6:04 am
live on the phone. tell us what bart did. >> we stopped the trains and did a quick check on the tracks. we are about 10 minutes behind right now. it was essentially a very minor event. we are always prepared. >>mark: >>james: what is the drill that bart goes through? demo we stop the trains where they are for 5 minutes to
6:05 am
make sure there is not another stronger after shock. once it seems that everything is settled down, the trains moved slowly. the trains above ground level are the most vulnerable. once it is determines that everything is safe, we get back up to our normal speeds. we have sensors to out the bay area that can detect earthquakes and help us determine earthquakes independent of the usgs. >>james: what does that mean? to the attendants walked the track? new speaker the train operator looks for a visible signs that there is but structural damage or damage to the
6:06 am
we have been going through earthquake retrofitting. >>james: whenever an earthquake happens and we think about bart, we think about the tunnel. but what it takes for you guys to go down there and inspect that? >> the transbay tube is a vital to our system. it is a part of the earthquake retrofit. if work is not complete, it is almost complete. when it was created there was a train in the transbay tube and
6:07 am
passengers and the train operator were unaware that an earthquake occurred. >>darya: by the way, where are you a and did you feel it? >> i was sound asleep, but i did feel it. i am at home in alameda. something woke me up and i figured it was an earthquake. >>darya: stake you for checking in with us this morning. when you are asleep, these things happen so quickly. i felt like it was maybe two seconds. we are working to get usgs on the phone and speak with our live cruz in the field. in san francisco will tran did not feel it, jackie sissel did it feel it in oakland.
6:08 am
>>james: he is near the middle of where the earthquakes occur in one week ago today. >>darya: we are going to go to will tran in san francisco right now. we are here on the best evidence. we felt the earthquake is quite strong. it was quick but sharp, you felt nothing? well >> i did not feel anything. yoli eceves is here with me, she did not feel anything. we could be in the minority. we're going to walk around and get some reaction. you have been here for about 30 minutes or so, did you feel that earthquake? >> maybe i did, but i am so cold, i thought maybe my

walk of occupied sf. many people are still slipping. obviously the tools did not wake them up. some people did feel it. people were unsure until i told them it was an earthquake. >>will: if you are up and walking around? many people who felt it said that they were sleeping. we felt it down the street on van ness ave. it was pretty strongly felt and oakland. we have people on the phone. good morning. what kind of place to do you live in? tell us what you felt. >>caller: i live in east oakland. i was on my knees

6:14 am
6:15 am
probably just one in this series. >>darya: de expect to see more of these smaller earthquakes? >> yes. i think they will probably continue to be aftershocks. it is usually followed by aftershocks there this magnitude. >>darya: what can you tell us about the shape of today's earthquake. would officially would you describe it as?
6:16 am
>> there are different kind of waves generated by the earthquake. >>james: the bay area is are riddled with faults. do these earthquakes do anything to alleviate the pressure on the faults? >> it is difficult to say. you have stressed that builds up in certain particular areas probably closest to the northern hayward fault. when you
6:17 am
have the earthquakes, stresses are reduced. >>darya: would you say that this is a good thing to relieve the pressure of or, can they wake up other faults and more activity? >> it is hard to say. generally the ones that occur have occurred at different areas and a large quake has never been generated from that. >>darya: why do you refer to it as a swarm? >> that is a grouping of earthquakes that occur, usually a sizable quake occurs first and is followed by an aftershock over a few days or weeks. >>james: just counting them
