remained very peaceful. what will happen when all these additional people injure, we do not know but as you are looking at them right now things are remaining peaceful. and they are basically saying that we are the 99 percent and there is no work today. >>pam: the you have the sense that the port will simply shut down and allow the protesters to come in? >>reporter: a little earlier today they had a port operation spokesperson to tell us that several of the marine terminals had ordered off shorts--offshore men to do some work for their 11:00 shift tonight. but it does not look like it will be eating into any kind of work at all. it's questionable if the shoremen who are on duty now will be able to leave the port. but the truckers who are trying to leave the port and get in on not going anywhere. >>pam: you are looking at a

split screen, on the left side this is a group of people who are now marching in protest as they head to the port of oakland to make a statement there. they are being supported by the critical mass of bicyclist and many others. we have seen families in the crowd and children in the crowd. let me go to what our reporters covering this story and we have many. j.r. stone is marching with the protesters who are heading towards the port. busy hour. you saw some of the people marching in his shot, now you will see them again. at least 3000 people to 4000 people are making their way into the port of oakland if not higher than that. this is a group that has taken the streets on. you can see the different kinds, people have been on your at the plaza all day long.

>>reporter: one group of people that we have not seen on the police officers. a few of the closed off the streets so that they could get by certain main intersections. now as far as you can see, you can see protesters and then in the distance, you can see some cranes, that the port of oakland. but no problems here, this is a peaceful march making their way to the port of oakland which is exactly what i am going to do right now. pam, back to you in the studios. >>pam: before you go describe the people were in this crowd. >>reporter: you did a pretty good description a little while ago. you are not just talking about the people

that we have seen outside camping out, we are talking about families of people want out here, we're talking about young people who may have been in school. these are teachers who decided to come out and they were talking at frank ogawa plaza and they said that their teachers and they're upset and that is why they are out here. you can see the bikers that came out, but we have people on all spectrums of life. >>pam: we will check back with you throughout all of our evening newscasts. not all the protesters have remained peaceful. we have seen a few acts of vandalism on this day. hazzig manyud shows us what happened to the home food store in oakland. >>reporter: this storefront window was spray-painted with the word strike, this window was shattered. this is what happened on bay street in oakland at the food market when general protesters marched at the front of the store. according to this employee

he witness what happened. >> the militia or whatever you call them they came down here and there were throwing paint against the wall. and then they came and ran down a that corn and attack the customer that came out of the store. so then at this guy who had a peaceful signee show one of the guys back and said we're not about that. and the other guy grabbed him and snatched his stick and then he shoved into the ground and three other guys ran up it was crazy. look like a karate movies. >>reporter: other witnesses said the van left this backpack in the middle of the street as they ran away. this is some type of high pressure pain machine inside eventually the oakland police showed up and hauled the evidence away. >>pam: maureen kelly has been talking to many of the people are to the betting in today's general strike to find out exactly why they decided to come out today. >>reporter: time is here

today participating in the general strike, what brings you out today? >> i am in support of the movement. i feel like we have gone on for too long not doing anything about corporate corruption about resources that are meant dwindling down for american people. and it is time to take a stand and i'm here to take the stand. out there today? >> i bought into the american dream and right now i have nothing to show, i have nothing in my pockets, nothing in the bank i went to school, got a doctorate degree and i could not find work for two years, that is unsettling to me. >>reporter: this is one of the many voices of hundreds of people who are expected to participate in today's general strike. >>pam: jeff bush is also among the protesters who are marching towards the port of oakland today. he joins us on the phone, jeff you are a

little bit farther back than j.r.. give us a sense of what is happening where you are. >>reporter: i am kind of bringing up a career of this march. i have to tell you this is an amazing sight. i am here on adeline the overpass, i am looking down towards the port and there are thousands of people filling up both sides of the street. i see people from all walks of life. old, young, people in wheelchairs, there are children here. everyone has been very enthusiastic and very peaceful. there are stopping to take pictures of this spectacle. as we were walking up here over this overpass, there were a couple of the greeks that were trying to get out and as i look down there was a line of big rigs that did not make it out in time. they are stuck in a line just waiting for this crowd to pass.

>>pam: what the protesters hope will come from this demonstration today? >>reporter: i think the prevailing message is that people here are phelps with what they see as corporate corruption and the influence in political society and the influence in society in general. people are holding up signs and they're pretty much simular. >>pam: jeff bush, we will be checking back here in the studio grant lodes has been checking a lot of the information about which roads are affected and also transportation issues. >>reporter: i have the map for you, vehicle traffic has been locked in all directions around city

hall. this is the intersection of 14th and broadway, the protesters are headed to the port of oakland that much we know. you just heard jeff bush say that they're on adeline street right now. that road is closed, they were on seventh street, that road is closed i am not sure if they are reopened. the ac transit was rerouting buses on broadway between 12 and 20. they are rerouting them to want to king jr. way. no bart delays, but as the evening progresses that could certainly change we will have the latest information for you then. pam-- >>pam: from the looks of things they're about 4500 people live looks like that number may be growing. we have reporters at all point along with protests and we will bring you updates coming up after the break. >> a look outside at our

>>pam: here at kron4 you are looking at a live picture on the left side of your screen. on the right side is ground video of what is going on in oakland. amazing support for the occupy oakland movement. thousands of people are now marching towards the port of oakland. you can see them on the left side of your screen. the occupy movement branched out, it all started early this morning as protesters took to the street at 9:00 a.m.. that created a headache for morning commuters. earlier this afternoon things became a little bit violent as some of the protesters and again it was a small number took

aim and broke windows at to banks and vandalized a whole food store. later this evening the protesters started arriving in mass, they shut down the port of oakland and that is the picture that you see on the left side of your screen. you can see the large trucks that were surrounded by the crowd. they are being stopped from going into the port to unload today. the effort is to shut down any port business today. teresa estacio showed us how families are coming out in units to support today's general strike in the occupy movement. >>reporter: here in oakland at the main public library dozens of family showed up in support of the strike. in this video, parents with carrying their children, as well as having them in strollers to participate in a march in support of the general strike. parents tell me that the reason why they are here is that a extremely important be up for their child's future. >> we have kids and we want to make a better world for

them some day. i guess just growing up without a lot is going to be tough. >> this is henry, and he is my five and a half month old. i feel like it is really important for everyone with children to come join other families and parents and children to say that we won a good future for them. >> i feel like wall street has come monetize our present situation where we have no real recourse. we can take back the opportunity for our children to have a better future which is always the promise of our generation was that we would have more and we are not. >>pam: it is interesting to see the number of families and young people who are involved in this demonstration today. the themes of the occupy movement around the country and certainly around the world have been corporate

greed and concern about the dwindling middle class in the united states and the growing gap between rich and poor. the left side of your screen is a live picture of more and more of the people are marching in moving on to the port property now. the right side is from activity earlier in the day. let us check in with j.r. stone was marching with the protesters. can you hear us? >>reporter: a little while ago we talked to not up on the bridge now i'm down here in the port area. at this moment you can see a lot of people doing all kinds of different things. they're letting their voice be heard down here. i walked down this way now let me walk away from some of the music so that you can hear me. you can see some of the people are perched up above some of the railroad areas right here in the distance. then you can see one of the semi

trucks to the outside of one of the entrances there are just thousands of people down here. this by far is the largest occupy gathering that we have had in the last few weeks. i have been at all of these gatherings marching with the different people that you see. people are up on top of the trucks, their goal when they came was that they were going to shut the port of oakland down. now in this area, you can go inside of the launching pad area and you can see all the people. you can even look at some of the truck drivers. you can see them sitting on their own trucks outside. many of them are blowing their truck horns in support of a lot of these people who have come in march to a long way from downtown which you can see in the distance right there. pam, back you in the studio. >>pam: dan kerman is that the port while thousands of marchers are writing their.

it is quite a different picture from when we talk to you minutes ago. >>justine: just exploded. we are right outside the terminal this is pretty much the first when you hit when you get over the bridge and into the port. the first people who came here was a critical mass people they came about 4:14 p.m.. and then about 4:26 p.m. a truck load of buses came in. since 5:00 p.m. the whole group on foot have been marching. many of the mustang at this intersection and the rest are moving on through out other parts of the port. what is different now than compared to when you saw us last time is that the people have come aboard these trucks. in addition, the police have been pretty scarce. there was a line of motorcycle officers will-- who were here for quite some time. when the marchers started coming in over the hill, the motorcycle

officers pulled out again keeping their distance and for the most part we can tell you that things have been very peaceful. they are playing music and it is very reminiscent of a protest from years gone back. >>pam: kron4 coverage of the occupy movement will continue. who would take a quick break and be right back.

>>pam: regular people took off today to be a part of this general strike. walking with them is j.r. stone with the latest. where are you now j.r.? >>reporter: i am somewhere in the neighborhood around 5 30 yds from where i was before. a lot of these people 11 full testing in rallying today and was gone on strike have continue walking after we came over some of the bridges into the port of oakland. a lot of

people are walking to other entrances and i'm walking with them. i will have to apologize because i'm a little winded as other people are as well. walking down, you can see some of the different people out here. you can see some little ones with their family members who are doing the long walk as well. i can tell you that in certain circumstances and certain areas that we have walked, i will try to keep this as steady as possible. but in certain areas, you can see where people have set up in front of the semi drivers who wanted to leave. most of the semi drivers were honking in cheering for the protesters but there were a couple of them will try to leave. and people stood in front of the trucks with their kids and those truckdrivers were not going anywhere. right now we are at the soon to be one of the next entrances in the distance. i want to show you, it is extremely flat over here so it is hard to get a long shot confess i am

with thousands of people in the runway filly if--in the roadway. there were people singing and shouting but we get more updates i will give you some. now back to you. >>pam: the goal is to shut down the port as a symbol of frustration with corporate america. >>reporter: it is now official, the port is shut down. take a look at where we are right now this is the h p l terminal the first group to come in was critical mass, they stopped any of the trucks inside the terminal from leaving and they stopped all the other trucks that were trying to leave the terminal or get to another part of the port from getting anywhere. that was followed by a whole group of buses that came in with more protesters. another group on foot has been coming into your. for

the most part, things have been very peaceful. they have just said that there will be no business here at the port and they have succeeded at making that happen. you may be wondering what are the truckers' thinking about this, initially some were not happy at all to be caught in this. but the guy right here in this truck behind us, we asked him what you think about this being shut down and stuck here for you know how many hours? and he said it is ok, it is for us meaning he is one of the 99%. he believes that these protesters are here speaking for him so in his opinion, he is ok with it. >>pam: any sense of what will be done when everyone makes it to the port? >>reporter: know, there has been this one group the critical mass group that has been here since 4:15 p.m.. others are continuing to press through and walked through other parts of the port. the eight p l terminal is just one of seven marine

terminals at the port of oakland and we assume the other marchers will continue on past the three trucks and move on to the other parts of the pork.--port. the police presence appears to be nonexistent at this point. before this huge crowd came it was just the critical mass people and on the other side of the truck there might have been 20 motorcycle officers sitting over to the side watching the protesters as they were on their bicycle in this intersection not allowing the trucks to move forward. it seemed that their belief was as long as things stayed peaceful they would not get involved. the next group came in with six buses, and then the group of pedestrians and a motorcycle officers moved on to other parts of the porch. at this point, police presence visibly is pretty nonexistent.

sitting here chilling out. they're watching the show basically they have nothing else to do. one guy is walking his television set, watching what is going on. like i said, people are just wandering around their climbing on anything that can be climbed on including the trucks. >>pam: he said that the mood was upbeat do they feel like this is all been a success today? >>reporter: if i were to speak for the growth i would say that was an accurate statement. i think everybody here is some of the tories. --everybody here is the laboratory.--is celabratory. >>pam: -- >>reporter: i just walked

out of the meeting with the mayor in the interim chief they said no arrests have been made so far and so far there have been no injuries to any of the protesters and no police have been injured as well. they're estimating that there are about 4000 to 5000 people in the crowd. in that crowd, they say may be about 300 anarchists are in the crowd causing trouble. there are just in all black and wearing handkerchiefs. they did address that. they said that mayor jean quan went out to access the area and that everything looked peaceful. the mention that by businesses including banks and one wholefood was damaged as well. the executive director of the port mentioned that maritime operations at the port were shut down about 5:00 p.m. today to make sure that workers were able to get home safely and they basically said that chp, they requested them to us this and they're pretty much on standby justin case if there are people that want to get on the freeway or get

on the bridge, they are on standby. they said they need them, they will come. they also mention that there have been issues with crowd control. we were talking about 4000 to 500--to 5000 people. another thing that they did say, i am looking in my nose here, it will have a minimal amount of police presence which is what you have already seen. another point, going all over the place here but the port is closed. they said the money this brings in is about $39 billion per year. shutting that down in one day, that is about $8.5 million. they will have a press briefing to keep you posted if there is any other information about what is going on here. but so far no arrests have been made. they're estimating about 4000 to 5000 people are here.

>>pam: thank you, she's keeping in touch with the city officials and their response to all this. on the line to talk about today's general strike is a member of the oakland city council. thank you for joining us what is your initial reaction to all of this today? >> i am on the march right now, it is very peaceful, a lot of families with kids in young adults. they have interesting signs. >>pam: why did you decide to participate with the march today? >> i support the message that most of but the 99 percent are small businesses, police and citizens and we need to make a statement in this country that we cannot just take care of the 1%. we have to take care of the people that have lost their homes, the student loans that all the young people have to pay back. >>pam: some businesses have been vandalized by a small group of protesters would

jury action to that? >> is really too bad and very sad. the small businesses here did not need to be destroyed. >>pam: do you have any concerns as night begins to fall and near 5000 people are crowded through the streets of oakland. >> i have more concern want all the families and peaceful people leave and go home. we have all just march from city hall to an hour- and-a-half to get to the port people will get tired and go home and then you will be left with a few people here will cause the problem. >>pam: tomorrow city hall meeting irresolution is on the table to talk about the occupy encampment, can you talk about a revolution in your position about it? >> i have not seen the resolution yet, but whatever

they believe having the canned, not having the tent, oakland is at the center of occupy wall street. we need to be really careful that we treat everyone with respect. >>pam: some critics are saying that oakland city leaders have lost control of the city and have turned the authority over to the protesters who have decided to stay at the camp and if that they are calling the shots there. how you respond to that? >> i was not part of the decision to move the tents, the police chief, the city administrator and the mayor decided to move the 10's. the frustration i am hearing from people is that after they spent all that money moving the tents, they let them come back. but that is a decision that the council has not made. >>pam: how you feel about the decision that was made by the mayor and the police? >> i will not go back to what i think what should have happened or should not have happened. but i think that once you move them

port of oakland grounds. the trucks are at a standstill only action--no reaction from the trucks. they're not even trying to move or cause any problems. here in the studio is grant lodes who has been falling all of the logistic and the public transportation issues associated with this march that is affecting a large segment of oakland. >>reporter: many of the protesters have arrived at the port of oakland. they got there and shut down the facility. they gathered here at city hall and walked down adeline street to the port of oakland. we are falling atrophied in our reporters in the field for more information. vehicle traffic has been blocked around city

hall that is at 14th and broadly. that was for much of the afternoon. and the public transit situation is very fluid. ac transit is rerouting its buses along broadway between 12th and 20th streets. those buses are being sent to martha the king jr. way. so far, as far as bart goes, no delays there but we are falling all the developments on bart and ac transit. we will keep you posted. >>pam: let us go to dan who has been standing by at that location all afternoon. >>reporter: put that is right in this truck driver has been here the entire time he is now letting protesters into blow the horn. he has been a sign to support to protesters in this area. he is one of the first ones who got stopped at 4:15 p.m. this afternoon when protesters arrived. he

is very good about this, he says he is one of the 99% and he feels like the protesters are doing something for him and the other truck drivers so he does not have a problem with this at all. another wave of protesters are coming in my foot. some of them making their way through these trucks any cn are shot. these trucks have been sitting here until about 4:15 p.m.. the court officially shut down as of 5:15 p.m. but was shut down at least one hour before that because the height--at this point, no one is going anywhere. >> we are going to get home late and everything... >>reporter: do you feel that

>>reporter: one of the demand from the protesters is that they want more jobs that is what this boils down to. the word from the fire roared the--federal reserve chairman is to hold direct. this will stick around for the next two years. right now the national unemployment rate stands at 9.1%. the fed believes it will drop no more than 8 1/2% by the end of 2012. two years from now only a slight improvement 6.8 to 7.7%. the fed said it may be years before we reach the 4.9% again. ben bernanke says protesters have unfairly accused the fed of trying to protect the bankers' salaries. he said the bank is trying to protect all

shattered. >>pam: this is live pictures of this general strike the movement started in new york weeks ago with occupy wall street but open is the heartbeat of the occupy movement today. thousands have gathered at the port as a part of a general strike in an attempt to shut down the port this is one of oakland's largest money-making ventures to make a point about corporate greed. a few of the demonstrators have been violent. this is the picture that we want to show you in just a moment from the bank of america and at lakeside drive. a few windows were broken. and someone painted shut it down on the window there. harrison food was also vandalize. this demonstration had been largely peaceful all day. dan kerman is that the port in oakland and thousands have gathered here and what is considered the final leg in this march. >>reporter: it is still

going on, and the numbers that arrived are still coming. the first group which were the critical mass bicyclist arrived at 4:15 p.m. we thought that was a lot of people but now it is about 30 times as many people. you can see the trucks off to the right, they have been stopped in their tracks fence for 2:00 p.m. this afternoon when the first group of protesters came. they are not letting anyone leave the port and they're not letting anyone go into the terminals. basically this is not business as usual today. protesters have successfully shut down the port. one protester who is with me is julie anderson was a party last wave of pedestrians walking in here. tell me what is like to be successful and shutting down the court? >> if phil the mating of feel like we are powerful and we're letting the government know how we feel about the rich getting richer. >>reporter: while the

importance you detected a off to do this? >> i am a teacher and many of the teachers are striking today and i feel very bad about this because a lot of young people do not have jobs. i want to speak out and that the government know how we feel about that. >>reporter: that was julie anderson of the last of the protesters coming down through here. there are more and more people continuing on. so far very peaceful, the truckers are not moving anywhere. some are upset and like the gentleman behind me he said i am one of the 99%. he said that the protesters are doing it for him so he has been honking his horn in support of the protesters so it is a mixed bag as far as the protesters are concerned. >>pam: thank you, we will be checking back again thousand people were out on the streets of oakland today for what has been a largely peaceful demonstration by regular people who wanted to come down and make a

karate movies. >>reporter: other witnesses say the vandals left this backpack in the middle of the street as they ran away. eventually the oakland police arrived and hauled the evidence away. >>pam: city leaders have been monitoring developments all day. the mayor, city council members and the police department or joining us now. the have details on how they're handling today's event. >>reporter: the city officials didn't knowledge that the world is walking in oakland. they're doing their best as what the fed to maintain and keep the peace. some banks have been vandalized and there have also been incidences of graffiti but at last check, we learn that there were about 4500 people here and that video that you have been watching almost all afternoon there have been no

arrest and no injuries. but we did learn that the port closed just before 5:00 p.m. today. the chief how ward jordan said that the chp and the sheriff county had been brought in to mitigate traffic to make sure that people do not cross over to any bridges, or get on to the freeway or anything like that. and mutual aid is on standby if they needed, they will come and help. i want to point out that the chief said if any of the protesters tried to cross all around the gates or over the gates at the port, that is a federal offense. >> they will not be allowed to enter or penetrate the gates of the port, that is a federal offense if that happens, they will be arrested. but as far walking around the port property in terms of the streets outside, there are no sidewalks but on the gravel area we are not, we will allow people to roam around freely in that area but we will not allow them to go

out here. they were not successful and then they started to throw a tupperware container is of paint against the glass wall of the entrance and then they started to use a spray paint and graffiti on the walls. right now for the past couple of hours they had been clean the glass, they have been cleaning walls trying to correct all the vandalism caused by the group of the 50 people. the police tell me that they were all in black and they were stopped from doing further damage by a group of oakland residents who happen to stop them and block the entrance and told them to go away and that they were not wanted here. >>pam: it is interesting that others who have been peaceful in today's demonstration had been courting the tens of those who tried to start a violent acts. were there any arrest

the same time you want to remain focused on job creation and growing businesses that can contribute more to the entire region. >>pam: has the port brought in added security? >> the security is done by local law-enforcement agencies. we are not clear how long the protesters will remain, our understanding is that they do not intend to remain for very long but that all remains to be seen. we will have to make that decision based on the evolving situation. >>pam: is the port working with the officials? >> the port is working with the city's emergency

agencies. so we are speaking in a coordinated fashion with the protesters by every media channel that we can possibly accept. >>pam: one last question and we certainly appreciate your time this afternoon. ninth is beginning to fall, nightfall is upon us is there a cut off point? >> that determination has not been made at this point. it is not clear if it has been made by the protesters in terms of their activity is an evolving situation. we just want to remain focused on everyone's security out there. is certainly not ideal as night falls. the port area that includes both city property and public property as well as private property within the port, that is public property leased to private entities, this is an area of industrial activity, an area

in the midst of all the protest that has been going on for a week and particularly today. on the other hand they say that they're part of the 99% so they feel caught in the middle in of this. for some people, today's protest has become a family affair. teresa estacio has that part of the story. >>reporter: here in oakland at the library dozens of family showed up in support of the general strike. in this video parents for carrying their children and they had them in strollers participating in a march in support of the general strike. parents tell me the reason why they're here is because they think it is extremely important to speak up for their child's future. >> we have kids in want to make a better world for them sunday. i guess just growing up without a lot will be tough. >> this is henry, he is my five and a half month old. i feel like it is really

afternoon. those are people standing atop the trucks, they have been sitting here since 4:15 p.m.. these people have successfully shutdown the port, the bottom line is built trucks are leaving and no trucks are getting in. the only thing that has changed since 4:15 p.m. is just a mountain this number of people that have been arriving here. first it was critical mass that took control of the intersection and then they brought in six or seven buses worth of more protesters. every since 5:00 p.m. we have seen people on foot streaming in making it clear that they want the port shutdown and that is why. we talk with a few of the truckers and the protesters. >>reporter: do you support this? tell me why. >> yes, because it is for everybody, it is for the jobs and is doing real good. >>reporter: is this impacting your job? >> yes. >>reporter: the sun is

setting at the port and people are coming in, we see some groups leaving but as they are going, we see another group still arriving. what will it be like once night falls and the sunset, we are not sure. there were some motorcycle officer standing alongside as this thing just got under way. we have not seen any visible police presence in this area for some time. >>pam: we spoke earlier with court officials who are basically working with the oakland police and other city leaders in determining will be the next move as night falls on the poor. we would take a break and be back with much more to come, stay with us.

today. the port has been shut down by the thousands of people peacefully marched to this area. one this live picture, night has fallen in is not clear when the marchers plan to disperse and what the next move is for the protesters today. nonetheless, they're feeling a sense of success in the fact that today's protest has largely been peaceful and have successfully shut down the port of oakland. again, as we continue to follow this route today there have been some incidences of problems, some vandalism at various locations but on the overall look of what happened today, it has been a peaceful operation. kimberlee sakamoto is standing by and she has new video of today strike that she collected from online. >>kimberlee: that is right, we heard a lot of incidents as of protesters policing. and on to where we found

order to remove the encampment did you get any response from the mayor? >> i have not received any response from the mayor or anyone else. >>pam: so you still feel the the messages coming from city hall are inconsistent for your members? >> i think the message was sent and it has been received well based on the silence that i here. at this point as police officers we just want some direct guidance on what to do. >>pam: have you have feedback from citizens? >> yes, we had a very good outpour. we're just trying to communicate with the citizens since we were put out as being the bad guys, but we have got a lot of support from a lot of the

citizens of oakland and it has been really positive. >>pam: let us go back to tonight's demonstration, night is falling on the bay area and you have thousands of people there on the property at the port, what is the next move? >> that is going to be up to the mayor's office to decide what the next move will be. at this point, the officers are there and ready to go in response to whatever actions that they will require. >>pam: we have seen some acts of vandalism at various locations even though it has not been reflective of this large group of thousands nonetheless, there have been some vandalism at the whole food store and various bank, can you talk about that? >> that is one of the most negative things that have occurred, however most of the protesters stepped in and stop those people from doing that. you will find

that the vast majority of the protesters out there are really peaceful. they're not interested in doing vandalism and violence that is want to get the message across in the heard loud and clear. >>pam: our latest information is that there have not been any arrests is that the case? >> that is what i am hearing. >>pam: one of the things you did address in your letter was that police are required to work today and other city workers can participate in the strike, does that feel inconsistent you? >> at this point we are here today we're all working we have people out there doing their jobs and as far as what ever happened yesterday is history. we are at a new day and we're working it.

>>pam: we know that police have kept a low profile but there--but has there been any hostility from the police that are in the area? >> not that i have heard. >>pam: as you move for a are you concerned about any inconsistencies? >> i think we owe it to the citizens of oakland to let them know exactly what the plan is for this protest from here on out. >>pam: thank you for your time this afternoon the oakland police officers association expressed dismay yesterday with a lack of direction from city hall on how to handle the entire occupy movement much less today is a general strike. nonetheless, feeling better that there has been some positive response from the citizens of oakland who share police concerns. now

catherine heenan is joining us with news around the nation. >>catherine: every day we hear about a new hot spot for protesters. one of the many hot spots where occupy protesters have been arrested in recent days is national tennessee. dozens of people ended up behind bars, as in other cases that did not end the protests and in this case led to a court fight. this week a judge issued a restraining order. the tennessee governor continues to defend the crackdown. >> this is not fun for us or i highway patrol officers, they have things to be doing what we think we have a responsibility for safety. if something happens there i can promise you the whole group will be there saying governor, how do let that happen? >>catherine: occupy movements have sprung up in
