clock to try and fix this. thousands of trees can down last wednesday. a lot of them are blocking roads. more wind is in the forecast but not expected to be a big problem like last week. >>reporter: developing news that could seriously impact the u.s. economy. this afternoon, standard and poor's the credit rating firm place 15 european nations on alert. s&p put the nation's on a negative credit watch. that means the credit could be downgraded within 90 days. six of the countries including germany which incidentally is europe's strongest economy were all put on notice and they have aaa credit rating that could be downgraded. here are the other countries that we are talking about. now later this week, there will be a summit of european union leaders and that is expected to shed some light on when the european economic crisis goes from here. these six

countries currently have a triple a rating and they could be downgraded. you may remember the summits that i talked about that will be later this week. the united states had a similar situation back in august when they had the credit rating downgraded. it was aaa and then went down to aa +. coming up tonight rob black will be in the studio he is our financial expert and he will explain how this potential european downgrade will affect the u.s. economy. >>catherine: gov. jerry brown is filing a ballot initiative asking voters to increase taxes on themselves in order to generate more money for schools and public safety. he posted this an open letter on his web site. he says that he wanted to pretty raise taxes on the rich and to boost the statewide sales tax by half a cent. that will raise about $7 billion per year for five years. the 49ers are in the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons.

>>catherine: and national news the president wants to see congress extend a payroll tax cut. he says that the economy is still fragile despite some good economic signs. unemployment dropped to 8.6 percent last month. the stocks rose again today but still the president says that american families need help. >> one year ago at this time both parties came together to cut payroll taxes for the typical american family by about a thousand dollars. as soon as this year in, so does the tax cut. if congress fails to renew the tax cut before then, that same family will see a tax hike of about $1,000 per year. >>catherine: the tax cut extension does have support in congress but the parties are split on how to pay for.

federal investigators are trying to determine if a body found in georgia is that of a missing girl. the body of a young girl found today in a trash can in canton georgia. officers say that the girl appeared to have been insulted and was badly beaten. it was found near a playground where a seven year-old girl was last seen on friday. autopsy results are still pending that will confirm the identification. and you are looking at the head of the faa, he was arrested for drunken driving this weekend in virginia. he was pulled over about 10:30 p.m. saturday night. police say that he was driving on the wrong side of the street. he was a former pilot and appointed to lead b.f.-- appointed to lead the faa because of his safety routines. >>jacqueline: we will only see the temperatures fall very quickly once the wind

starts. here is a picture of tomorrow it is very cold out there. temperatures in the 20's and '30's. we warm up substantially by noon. by 3:00 p.m. mostly in the upper 50s and someplace is looking into the low 60s by tomorrow afternoon. here's a look at the frost and freeze warnings in effect. the frost advisory through the east bay hills and also the inland valleys. the temperatures are expected to be in the 20's and 30's to route the bay area. we have 20s for the north bay and the delta, 32 elsewhere. not only where the frost advisory is also down in the south bay. i think the frost advisory could be extended. definitely bring your pets indoors, you do not want to leave them outside. it is very important, look to the future cast, not showing any substantial when dust.--wind

breakthrough into next week look at our extended forecast. temperatures are staying very cool other tomorrow morning and mouth in the afternoon. we will warm of a little bit on both ends, into the weekend there is a breakthrough on monday. we will keep you posted. >>catherine: gas prices are falling a little bit in the bay area. jackie shows the scene. >>reporter: just-in-time for the holiday travel season gas prices are starting to fall. according to aaa an average price of gas in california is sitting at $3.64 that is down 205 over the last month. the reason? supply and demand. we have good news for your pocketbook, aaa said that we are still paying almost 405 more per gallon this year than we did last year at the same time.

>>catherine: the former hewlett-packard ceo patricia dunn had died after her battle with cancer. she was one of the most prominent woman in corporate america until she tarnished her position in 2006. she was trying to get people leaking information to the media, she was ousted from h-p, there were criminal charges brought against her but they were eventually dropped. >>kimberlee: lucky supermarkets is warning shoppers about a security breach. they have even gone as far as recommend some shoppers to cancel the bank accounts in order to protect their money. now the first video will lay out a couple of things on our web site. they posted a statement saying that this only applies to 20 stores in the bay area and only to shoppers that used a self checkout machine in those stores. they are urging those that may have been affected to verify and monitor their getting credit accounts to make sure that

>>catherine: in world news this was a critical week for the european union. today germany's chancellor and french president met to talk about the summit that is set for thursday. they are the leaders of the two strongest financial nations in the union. a tough ball high-- they talk about how ireland and italy will affect them. vice-president joe biden is in greece talking about the european economy. the u.s. has talked with global central banks to help to ease the debt problem. joe biden strip is a show of solidarity. >>catherine: the founder of wikileaks is continuing to

appeal. he is facing six charges in sweden that led to the extradition request. he told the court that police and prosecutors should not have the power to issue expedition under european law. he has two weeks to make his case to the supreme court. and nasa says that it has found a planet very similar to earth. is outside our solar system and the scientists think that it may be able to support life. charles clifford visited the nasa research center with details. >>reporter: the planet is about 600 light years away from earth. its orbit is in what is known as the habitable zone, a sweet spot where a plant needs to be in order to support earth like life forms. john jenkins is an engineer with nafta, he analyzes the data from the telescope that found a planet. >> and we know that the
