yes we did get some rain today. jacqueline, what is it looking like? >>jaqueline: right now we are not picking up a lot of measurable rain. it is mostly drizzle. as we head into the overnight hours, you can expect the rain to taper off. we will be seeing more fog overnight. take a look at storm tracker 4. rain is really pushing to the north. we saw a few hundreds of an inch of rain. we had some breaks late this evening. caw again, there is going to be fog. there is moisture on the ground. take a look at the rainfall totals. not really impressive. i did mention the fog. visibility issues are already occurring on the

coastline. reduced visibility around half moon bay. the fog will become more widespread overnight. crime conditions for localized fog. the new year's eve fireworks forecast coming out. >>catherine: bay area cities are getting ready to ring in the new year tomorrow, the last day of 2011. sands and cisco is preparing for its big party. kay thompson is joining us live from the embarcadero. almost that time of year. it is almost a new year's eve. san francisco is getting ready. we can show you everything they have put out here. the city is expecting 150,000-200,000 people. they have rolled out a lot of sense for crab--for crowd control. if you are coming to the fireworks you may want to get out here early as get a prime spot. with so

many people expected, you need to come to get the spot that you want. more fencing has gone up a round public transportation. earth they have a flashing signs warning people of the traffic in the area. call as you look down the embarcadero, there are no cars parked here. they already have no parking signs out. if you plan on driving into san francisco, you may want to rethink that. >>catherine: preparations are also underway for a new year's eve bash in downtown san francisco. the hotels, bars and restaurants are expecting a crowd beginning early saturday evening. rob fladeboe shows us what is happening. >>rob: judging from the amount of beer delivered, it

>> christmas in the park and the downtown ice rink will also be busy. people who are undecided about their plans , >> i am coming to san jose to party. >>catherine: san francisco police one new year's partygoers to know they want everyone to be paid. there will be a lot of extra officers on patrol. there is a zero tolerance when it comes to public drunkenness and driving under the influence. they want people to come to the city, have a fine, but do it safely. >> it is expected that there will be more celebrants. knowing that, the department has prepared their staffing accordingly, in preparation for this. we want to provide a safe environment for the public to come and enjoy san francisco.

morning. you can see the yellow evidence markers on the ground where investigators say several bullet casings were found. one neighbor describes what she heard as gunshots were being fired. >> howl, howl, howl. i looked out my window and it did not think anything of it because we hear gunshots all the time. >>haaziq: the victims were sitting inside of this red suv when someone began shooting into the vehicle. >>officer: and the investigators are of looking into whether or not the suspect or suspects approached on flickr or if there were in a vehicle. those are the details that investigators are trying to work out. >>haaziq: investigators have no description of the shooter. both were transported to a local hospital with not life- threatening injuries. >>catherine: it is hard to

at the zoo are very upset about the monkey. take a look at this video. the thieves cut holes in the exhibit fencing and managed to steal the 17 year-old a monkey. this is what he books light. goals have been temporarily repaired. this hole is big enough for a small person to fit through. officials say that bananas sam was one of 18 primates in the exhibit. all of the squirrel monkeys were donated to the zoo a year and a half ago. officials say he is highly social and it needs to be back with the other primates. a zoo worker removed all of the squirrel monkeys from the enclosure until all of the fencing is replaced. urgently there are no surveillance cameras

map right here, and basically this to square mouse strain has an least 19 fires. i have videos from the scene. in and you could see huge flames. as a car right there and firefighters are working to cut out the fire. the fires and then spread to nearby homes. firefighters were scrambling. but they used all their resources and they were able to quickly extinguished many of the fires. through the city of west hollywood. we had no injuries to civilians or any injuries to firefighters. again, we will be preparing through the night. >>reporter: crews are bracing for more activity friday night and into saturday morning. >>jacqueline: look at the fog conditions right now. this is a shot from our roof camera. you can barely make out city hall with that fog leaned over san francisco. right now which is the low cloud coverage. the rain is still sitting up to the north we have not seen much in the way of rain out there today. we will see that fog will get worse because of the drizzle. take a look at the coastline is the worst under a quarter mile visibility and half moon bay. visibility is not good over the water or in down time either.--or in downtown either. into tomorrow we will have high clouds with decreasing cloud coverage in

>>reporter: we are talking about too many accidents within a couple hours of each other in san francisco. this one involves a police cruiser in which four people were hurt. we will zoom in on the big board take a closer look at this when it happened about 5:45 a.m. this morning in the dog had to neighborhood in san francisco. a muni light rail vehicle was traveling on third street near the intersection of 22nd street. it hit the driver side of the police car. we have recent video from the

scene. you can see the damage of the front end and also the driver's side. two officers in the cruiser suffered minor injuries. the muni driver and passenger also suffered minor injuries. you have to cops, you have the muni driver and passenger. this is the vehicle was not going fast when it hit the cruiser. the traffic signals also damage. the intersection was kaput --shut down for a couple hours. now this is another accident at at&t park this is near the intersection of third and king streets. i have video of this one as well. it is not as bad, this is just a regular car. basically, the train and the car back together not much damage, there is still--it is still too early to tell what the cause of the accident was. >>catherine: more than to

the students were involved in a drug bust. this was confiscated by the nevada authorities from two buses. students from more than a dozen bay area schools were on board. the students were headed to a salt lake city ski trip. the group stopped to eat and someone called the police when they saw him smoking pot outside of the buses. the chief explains why there were no arrests. >> i then got an opportunity to take the microphone on each bus and i told him, i said you are probably mad at me now, but maybe you'll thank me later that you are not skiing down a ski slope and at one of the ski resorts stoned out of your mind and crashed and burned and got her die. we decided since it was dealing with over 250 kids and five tour buses we decided to confiscate the contraband and let them go on their way.

look outside a san francisco, it is a nice picture out there right now. look at that, you can see the low cloud coverage here in the clear skies. we will see fog again overnight. take a look of the satellite and radar picture. higher coverage is pushing through and we have clear conditions in the wake of this for tomorrow. there is another storm brewing offshore but this is going to go well to the north. take a look darker invisibility that is close to the coastline. we still see falk, it will form overnight. it will be localized. it is going to be very unpredictable is hard to say exactly where it will form but if you so i drizzling out there today you probably will see fall overnight tonight. as for our current conditions temperatures are pretty cool out there today in the fifties for the most part. a

set a new record because this is the previous one. when just may set a new record in open flows among rainfall in december. now santa rosa and san francisco have no rainfall that is the previous record. let us take a live look outside the storm is pushing through, dry conditions are expected. this system is expected to go to the north and not really affect us, but we will see falk overnight because of a little bit of rain that we did not get out there today. current visibility is pretty bad along the coastline. as we head into the overnight hours, we expect cooler temperatures and into the afternoon we have high clouds and then mostly sunny conditions and warmer temperatures mainly

driver likely fussing with his foot on the gas after awhile, the engine burst into flames. after the man was helped and take away from a safe distance, he was arrested for driving under the influence. now watch this, watch how this person is dragged across the parking lot. a truck driver saw the whole thing and follow the car did the license. turned out the vehicle was stolen. police are such--searching for other suspects the woman has a few cuts and bruises but she is expected to be ok. take it again this, power by pressurized jet pack he calls this a fly aboard. he uses a motor and pressurized water to move about in the water and the air. you can try this at home to, the board are expected to be in stores in the spring that will cost about $5,000. stay

>>catherine: it is almost time to welcome in the new year. the 2012 balloons are blown up. fireworks will be shown over san francisco's waterfront. a lot of people are expected, what is happening kate? >> as you can see, they have this sense all went up and down the embarcadero getting ready for these huge crowds anywhere from 150 to 200,000 people. they put this since up and down the

embarcadero. they say tomorrow they may expect some of the biggest crowd ever because new year's eve is falling on a saturday night. there is some housekeeping involved. we can show you some video of what they are saying is do not drive into the city. ben had been no parking signs up and down the embarcadero. at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow there will be no parking in this will be a tollway area. there are also electronic signs warning drivers of the delays that will happen tomorrow with all of the thousands of people down here. they say the delays are between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. on new year's eve. this could lead to a lot of traffic. now, back out here live they are preparing, even more fencing will go out tomorrow. reporting live in san francisco i'm kate thompson with kron4 news.

close to showtime and it will be in the upper '40's. we will talk more about your new year's eve and we may see rain again coming up in just a minute. >>catherine: more than 1000 people have been arrested in a crackdown for driving under the influence. they area law-enforcement agencies are getting ready for a lot more. the crackdown began december 16th almost half of the arrest or in alameda county. those three counties off your arrest than last year all the numbers are high. oakland police are hoping to curb violence on new year's eve. they are calling in back up patrol to help to get the guns off of the street. these are guns confiscated recently by officers. they say a special system to track gunshots will also be used over the holidays. >>reporter: every available

oakland police officer will be in uniform on this and year's eve looking to get guns off the street. >>reporter: the oakland police department will be working in conjunction with the california highway patrol and the alameda county sheriff's office. >>reporter: oakland police will rely on their shops water system and a computerized network using hidden microphones that are attached to the top of power poles and rooftops throughout the city to help locate weapons being fired in the year as the new year rings in. >> can tell the difference between a firecracker and a gunshot. that information will be sent to the dispatch center. >>reporter: although this may be in new year's tradition to some, there is nothing festival about firing a gun into the air in heavily populated areas. >> anytime anyone discharges a fire arm especially in a city, not only is it against the law,

but it is dangerous we do the stories every year. we did have two children killed in our city this last year by the discharge of a firearm. it is dangerous for everyone. >>catherine: a monkey is missing from the san francisco zoo. someone broke into a 2 lbs. world monkey from the exhibit. his name is ben and a sam he is small and ridiculed but the zoo officials say that he could be dangerous. i hear there is not a reward being offered. >>reporter: that is right, about a half-hour ago i got off of the phone with officials in san francisco they tell me that the award has actually grown. take a look at this video. this is what sam looks like. they say the thieves cut two holes in the exhibit fencing and managed to still be 17 year-old monkey. this is what he looked like like i

it is hard to have every incident on camera. >>reporter: there are security guards to patrol the zoo but they did not happen to see anything. a $5,000 reward is being offered again for the safe return of banana sam. >>catherine: thank you ready in this is not the first time that a zoo animal has been taken from the san francisco zoo, a mother could waller and her baby were stolen from their enclosure of december 2000. police found them in a san francisco home, they were ok but hungry to teenage boys had taken them planning to give them to their girlfriends for christmas. san jose police were investigating a possible attack on a fan and a sharks game. the 16 year-old girl said she got a concussion after being hit by another fan at wednesday night's game. maggie was wearing a vancouver canucks in jersey at the time. the sharks released a statement saying that their staff was alerted as someone needed medical assistance.

>>catherine: it cold case murder and put knoll has finally been cracked. police arrested a man for the murder dating back more than a decade. this is the 40 year old on the right he was found at sfo last week tried to sneak into the country. he was using a fake passport he is suspected of killing his girlfriend we see on the left. her body was found in 1999. she was shot and then dumped. they say if he'd been living a posh lifestyle and china. they believe he killed her for the insurance policy. >> he is very cocky someone that i would consider an arrogant individual. i believe that for years, yes thought that he is got away with this. >>catherine: he is now ready

on 18th street. these are in the same area, that is lake merritt right there as we fly over on the big board a couple miles to the west. this is near the montclair business district and street over there on look is avenue has also been hit. this is what these are doing. police say that they're basically driving around looking for people that are sitting in their parked car and using or talking on their phone. the suspect of going around and robbing those people between the ages of 15 in 21 years old their black males, two of the four are armed. police are telling people to keep your phone and other valuables in your pocket or purse out of plain view especially when you're sitting in a park car. >>jacqueline: here is a live look outside the san francisco city line it looks pretty out there right now. we will seesawed again overnight but the rain has passed through. to give it the storm tracker for radar.
