jackie spier and state senator leland yee their offices are both in this building but they're not on the floor that caught fire. at this point we believe that their offices are ok. take a look at the scene behind me the firefighters remain on scene. this fire broke out at about 3:00 p.m. on the 11th floor of the building. we believe that a property management company leases the floor. there is a lot of smoke and water damage and fire damage on the floor. fire officials tell me that the fire sprinkles on the floor were able to put these fires out within minutes. the cause may have been an electrical. >> it is under investigation but we justin

the deputy fire marshal up their they said it was electrical in nature some kind office appliance. a printer, or computer is unconfirmed. >>reporter: at this point there were evaluations take a look at the building behind me. 4 people on of these floors. fire officials tell me it was not as busy because to date people have this day off because it is the day after new year's. everyone made it out ok. there were not any injuries but the fire officials tell me it will be several hours before people are allowed back in the building. >>catherine: friends and family of a little boy killed in a shooting over the weekend are holding a candlelight vigil. this five-year zero was killed near his family's taco trucks. j.r. stone joins us live in oakland with an update on the story. >>reporter: it has been a very difficult day for everyone, it has been a very difficult few days for

everyone in this east oakland community. if you look into the distance you can see the memorial set up. you can see some of the teddy bears, the flowers and the different channels. this has grown at day-by-day all for the young boy. as you look at the video, you can see some of the pictures, so many people have come out here and so many people are looking at this. this is gabriel martinez jr., he lost his life. i have been talking with a number of people in the community and at this point the killer is still on lose. a number of people in the community believe that this could have been a crime of revenge. >> it sounds to me that this is sort of like a revenge, and one of the person stated that the shooter said i will get you where it hurts. >>reporter: back out here live, you can see some people who came to pay their respects. there is a vigil

been held at 6:30 p.m.. i will let you know, i know that a number of family members were out here earlier this afternoon. i was talking to them and they just shook their heads saying that this has been a very difficult few days. i talk with the police earlier, the police say they're still working in hoping for the community members to come forward with information that could help them in this case. reporting live in east oakland i am j.r. stone with kron4 news. >>catherine: and i iraq war veteran guns down a park ranger and then flees on foot into the deep snow. today search helicopter spotted the body of the shooter, benjamin barnes was face down in the snow wearing only a t-shirt and one sneaker. >>catherine: more than 200 federal and local officers took part in the massive manhunt that began around 10:30 a.m. monday morning. barnes refuse to stop a

safety check point. it was set up to make sure that park visitors had chains on their tires. one ranger took off in pursuit and another came from an opposite direction. barnes shot her before she was able to get out of her car. >> they manage to get a small team together and get her out of the line of fire. unfortunately she lost her life. >> she was a kind person, she was a hard worker. the kind of person that always had a smile. >>catherine: out barnes had had trouble ever since he turned from my rack one year ago the mother of his child applied for a restraining order describing him as a suicidal and having post- traumatic stress. police said he fled mount rainier after shooting four people. >> we found other weapons

on him as well. >>catherine: with an armed and dangerous fugitive on the loose, rangers began to evacuate the park. my 3:30 a.m., 125 visitors and 17 staff members had been escorted to safety. overnight they use the equipment to lead detective body heat. this morning after 24 hours after andersons murder, they found his corpse. >>catherine: fbi agents said there was no sign of violence and the gunman appeared to have died from exposure. and one person recovering after being hurt in a building fire. 10 people were left homeless. this is the scene late last night. as you can see, the flames are on the top of the buildings. crews say that the fire's spread to three buildings. will tran is at the scene. >>reporter: the cause of the fire is still under

investigation but they are extremely lucky because the flames were going straight in the year as opposed to the side. but to write homes received the most damage. when the flames escaped they went straight up into the ear. had they gone to the left, or the right, it could raise down the block and damage even more homes. the homes were so close to each other all they had to do with a jump from home to home, that he even called for reinforcements earlier than he normally would have been because there were extra firefighters here they were able to contain this to just three homes. the cause of the fire is under investigation, the could take some time but the good news is that the homes will not have to be not down. the structure is fine although they have to do a lot of remodeling.

today will be caught-- charged with austi--with arson they said the fire stopped when the man was detained. >>reporter: los angeles fire crews an arson investigators responded to nearly one dozen car fires or just after monday. on day four of the l.a. arson spree, the number of fires and fire exceeded 50. some of those blazes spread to structures including apartments. residents were terrified.

smiling in the back of a patrol car, investigators placed under arrest. he was suspected to be charged with arson later in the day. they say the men may have had disputes with immigration officials over an issue involving a relative. one firefighter was injured during this four day spree. no civilians were hurt. authorities say they will continue patrolling monday night. >>reporter: the arson spree has cost at least $2 million in damage according to the mayor. and there are frayed nerves throughout several of the los angeles communities. >>catherine: a tragic star to the new year for one family in georgia, a three month old boy was killed when suv crashed into his home. police say the baby was sleeping in a living room when the suv ran a stop sign and drove right through the house. the driver is facing several charges including vehicular homicide and reckless

driving. three children are home after being rescued from an icy river in utah. rescue crews tried to pull them out of the car and they eventually did. the children's father was driving when he lost control the car. a former police officer had--had to shoot the went out to rescue the children spent the night in hospital recovering from hyperthermia there are expected to be ok. the new year is off to a frosty in messy start in michigan. heavy snow and wind has made things very dangerous. salt trucks have been now, a lot of the side streets are icy. a winter storm warning is in affect for counties along lake michigan. more snow is expected tomorrow there could be at least more than 1 ft. of new snow. >>kimberlee: with the iowa caucus set for tomorrow the republican presidential hopefuls are turning to the web and social media as weapons. first of lt. ronnie his digital team has been hard at work they released a youtube video explaining the

he found a 17 year-old squirrel monkey in stern grove and managed to get him into his backpack when asked, the zoo's works person says the truth is stranger than fiction but they're happy to have the spider monkey back. now we explain how the zoo is stepping up security. >>reporter: final repairs are being made to the fence where the suspect cut through the sense of the zoo with a spider monkeys were kept. they have doubled the number of security guards patrolling during the graveyard shift, instead of just two guards and during the graveyard shift they will now have four. >>reporter: you can see by this sign that is to already have security cameras in place but after last week's break in some have been repositioned. they say despite the upgrade is impossible to make the park

total of 18 homicides in vallejo for 2011 the second highest rate in 2000 years --and 200 years. but now compare that to los homicide count in 1997 to the board murdered in vallejo in that year. the police department as well as most city agencies saw massive cuts in the last three years. but all that changed in november when the city emerge out of bankruptcy. federal and state grants have also help with the police budget. creative staffing had been put into place and partnering with the sheriff's department other agencies were put into place during the year. we have seen improvement in police services for the future and that is good news it is something that the citizens of vallejo are in need of. >>catherine: the trough for a man suspected of killing a

man and his two sons will be taking place. prosecutors say it was a member of the ms 13 gang who mistakenly thought that one of the man's sons was a rival gang member. he was an illegal immigrant he was not reported at the time because he was a juvenile at the time of the killings. a tough new ban on smoking in public places taking effect today in the city of alameda. current charles clifford was in the east bay with details. >>reporter: starting monday january 2nd it is illegal to smoke cigarettes along sidewalks and the commercial area of alameda. smoking is now banned in the outdoor seating sections of bars, restaurants and coffee shops. it does not stop there, under the new law and no one who will be allowed to smoke in public parks, trails, sports fields, or even here at the beach. smoking will also be prohibited within 20 ft. of any doors or windows of a multi unit rental complex

$9 billion in voter approved bonds if the project is to continue. it is more than double the $98 million and the governor's they support the plan and some feel like this should be reconsidered before the bonds are sold. >>catherine: the governor wants to close a lot of state parks is he reconsidering? >>reporter: he is now reconsidering one of the lawmakers want to put the brakes on this whole plan they say we need a physical review and the governor is talking about closing 70 of the state parks but she wants to put the brakes on this and that is another piece of legislation that we might see. >>catherine: i think it is interesting that they want to make on-line poker legal. >>reporter: yes we are talking about two different plans, it could range anywhere from $1 billion to $6 billion depending on the proposal. i guess the question depends on whether
