>>catherine: police in sunnyvale are hunting a killer who struck an elderly man with a car. the hit and run happened yesterday. the victim was 72 years old. investigators say an open house fire that killed at least 60 birds appear to be accidental. the blaze broke last night near lake merritt. firefighters said the family who live in the home raise the birds in the basement and no people were hurt in the fire, we will be right back.

great news for the economy new unemployment numbers are out. grant lodes is back to show us why there is reason for optimism. >>reporter: the nation's unemployment rate dropped again in december down from 8.7 the month before to 8.5 percent the lowest it has been in three years. december is the fourth straight month that the unemployment rate went down. another positive, 200,000 jobs were added. these are looking great nationally but they are even better in california. tonight dan kerman zeroes in on the bay area to tell us where the jobs are and what kind of positions are available. >>reporter: in terms of hiring the bay area has been running ahead of california which is running ahead of the nation. >> jobs are towards more skilled and highly educated workers in technology and other businesses. there is

still a large pool of unskilled workers that are finding it difficult to find jobs. here in the bay area lot of the driver of the local economy throughout the bay area are in the more skilled technologically high tech areas. i speak that is why we have been on the leading edge just simply reflecting the strength and that type of hiring. >>reporter: over the last year the santa clara valley has led the bay area in job growth. the bulk of the hiring has been in the high- tech industry. other sectors are also seeing growth. >> the strength of the high-tech is spilling over to retelling, personal services. many other jobs are benefiting from the strength. >>reporter: why these three counties have seen increased growth of last year. the only source spot in the bay area is alameda and contra costa county that has lagged

behind with job growth of just three tenths of a percent adding just 2800 jobs over the last year. coming up tonight at 8:00 p.m., we will take a look to see why the east bay is lagging behind and what area in the san francisco areas are growing. >>catherine: an upcoming public works project is promising hundreds of new jobs. smart train officials have just announced they hope to break ground on the regional project that links a sonoma to marin county as soon as next week. teresa estacio reports that smart train officials believe in the in this project will bring an economic boon to the area. >>reporter: officials tell kron4 news that the project is supposed to bring 900 new jobs to the area and they say that is only the beginning. judy arnold is on the smart train board of

directors. >> these jobs will be for the building trades. these are electricians, these are builders that are vital because there is no building because of the economy. this is the biggest public works project in the bay area. >>reporter: as phase one, two and three unfold as you see here, more jobs will be created including people need to run the smart train. >> we will need a human resources department we will need accountants, dispatchers, we will need operations. those will be permanent jobs. right now, many of the jobs are temporary but we are hoping it will be enough to tide people over. >>reporter: as a part of the entire project she says bart train was mandated to have the trains shown here built in the usa. >> one of the things that we were required to do was
