pam coverage tonight of our developing story. we have rob fladeboe standing by. >>reporter: this is a story as you said about a bomb scare, a big robbery and a horrific traffic jam and a police chase all rolled into one. let us begin with a bomb scare. these are pictures from late this afternoon looking down at roughly the intersection highway 85 in '87. that pair of bank robbers were fleeing the police and in the crashed the car into a mini van rolled off to road just south of the interchange with highway 87. inside the car was a suspicious device that was thought to be some type of explosive taking no chances, please immediately shut down those freeways. car they evacuated some homes in the area they brought in the bomb squad, they brought in a robot. they ended up detonating

explosive device on whatever was, we still do not know. meantime back at the bank, investigators were speaking with individuals inside the bank they told us that this started about 11:30 p.m.. one individual walked inside of the bank and try to hold it up. room revamp we have indications from what the witnesses and the employees are telling the investigators that the one person that went to the bank displayed some type of suspicious object and made some type of threat to the cell-2 the tellers. based on that information we have the bomb squad responding to investigate and determine whether or not integrity is with a dangerous article involved. >>reporter: again, there was no bomb, whatever it was was exploded in the back of that car. this is something that you did not see every day this is a picture of a

completely vacant highway 87. 85 look the same way. the two suspects were taken into custody not long after. one was apprehended on the freeway and the other was apprehended at gunderson high school which was on lock down for much of the afternoon. there are also reports that the robbers may be responsible for a string of robberies across san jose we are working to confirm that information right now. >>erica: now the highway 85 is that open in both directions, you can see all of the green on your screen indicate skied over 50 miles per hour. because the freeways were closed for several hours it has the lot of added pressure on the other freeways. ticket-south bound 101 all the red in the case be down to the single digits. as we take that ride, we will see slow and go conditions. earlier this afternoon will cease to be down to just 2 mi. per hour. a really rough ride

says that the robbers came in with a box of wires that looked like a bomb. and this is the bank of america, the suspect methods of the bank and took off. this is where the suspect crashed, one ran to the high school and was arrested there. the other suspect was arrested on the highway right over here. talked exclusively to a man that actually tackled one of such experience >> : i was on my way to work and i notice when the cars that shot in from me and other cars to get on the freeway. altman the about 400 m in front of me i could see that these guys that up to about 90 mi. per hour. they plowed into a van, both of the occupants got out and ran towards the side of the freeway. when they did that i realize that they were not staying for the accent. at

the time i thought that my duty was to try to stop them from getting away from the scene. i ran after them and i part my vehicle. i started to wrestle with the suspect and try to get him on the ground. i've finally put him in an arm bar on the floor and then i decided to call about 10 minutes or so went by and then the calvary arrived in the officers came up saw with my dad, they threw a pair of cuffs at me because i did not have any handcuffs on me i put handcuffs on the suspect and he went on in my direction. >>pam: as we mentioned the other suspected bank robber was arrested on the gunderson high school campus. jeff bush spoke with students and faculty who

explained what the experience was like him- will-is like for them today. and >> i am a senior and i was in my math class and they wouldn't in general election over the hood of my mentors said this is not a drill we have to the on lock down. >> went on the drill earlier before, for then we heard there was a guy on campus. this is an emerald first it was madness and then later they were like this is serious, this is a real drill. >> everyone was well- behaved everyone just followed into sue terry what we heard is that the apprehension of the suspect took about seven minutes but the school stay on lock down for about an hour. some newsroom here is the art

everyone else was serious. it was needed to see our teachers and everyone else being so serious. we all lock our doors and went out of sight. every once in a text message to their moms and friends as saying that we were on lock down there was someone with a gun. >>pam: our team coverage continues, take thompson is a live close to the scene in this afternoon. the area was evacuated. >>reporter: yes this area was evacuated as you can see life has gotten back to normal. from the roof of these houses, you can actually see on to the freeway. some of the neighbors before they were evacuated were able to peek over the area and get a look at what was going on. we want to talk to amy and her daughter. step on over here,

you were home and the police came and told you had to go. what did they say? did they tell you what was going on? >> they said they cannot really give us any information that we need to evacuate our homes because of an incident that happened on the freeway. we had already been told about the lock down of the school that is right on the corner. we asked if it was some sort of bank robbery and guns, and they suggested they cannot give any more details. they gave us 10 minutes to get things together i ask them how far do we need to go? we're all concerned about leaving our home in not knowing what was going on. we just kind of left and follow their directions and wanted to make sure we were all safe. i could not wait to get home. >>reporter: thank you so much, as you can see people are back in their homes and there is a little bit of excitement today but as for now everything is fine.

>>pam: stay with us for continuing coverage on the bomb investigation in san jose. we will follow the developments throughout the night and post the latest photographs on our web site. >>reporter: the new details on the housing crisis the u.s. had fewer foreclosures in 2011 but the housing mess is no were close to being over. today we learned that 1.9 million homes into the foreclosure process in 2011. that is one out of every 69 homes, the fewest since 2007. before you think everything is ok, consider this, issues with the foreclosure process prompted many large u.s. banks to temporarily stop all foreclosures or else refile in some cases. so basically is a paper work jammed right now. most experts thinks 2012 will bring more foreclosures than 2011. but not as bad as the peak in 2010, but yes, this is not a

signal that the housing crisis is turning around. maureen kelly went to one street in concord that was hit hard by the mortgage letdown. she found that things there are looking much better. >>reporter: back in may of 2010 there were seven homes on this block that were in foreclosure. by the following in october that number a jump to 14. right now there is only one home on the street whose home is in default. at this home it looks a neglected. and there is a whole and --in the roof. they believe it was bought by investors and now it is renovated.

could been posing as utility workers. they say some may be wearing uniforms and driving trucks that look like official utility vehicles. police say the suspect are taking copper wire from a street light poles. it is happening in industrial areas like morris avenue and pershing drive. also in the late wooded area they're all been hit. investigators say since november thieves have stolen 16,000 ft. of copper wire valued at over $21,000. police say that legitimate utility workers cannot work that night which is likely when most of the copper in sunnyvale is being stolen. >>pam: new details in the investigation of a deadly pipeline explosion in san bruno. california regulators are launching a formal legal investigation to find out

fell to its lowest level since 2007. the number of homes facing foreclosure totaled 1.9 million and that is down 34% from the previous year. california dropped 21%. realty taxes the reason for the drop was actually paperwork delays that reduce the foreclosure rates. the company expects more foreclosures in 2012. maureen kelly spoke with a real estate agent in the east bay about what the market is like now. >> we still have foreclosures they are not going away anytime soon. to banks do have a lot of foreclosure inventory. they're slowly putting the inventory on the market. they are being a very careful not to glut the market. some people more on the property than with its value. 48 percent of our listing our inshore sell

in connection with a bank robbery that ended up shutting down to freeways in san jose, '85 and '87. the suspects tried to rob this bank of america bank and show the teller a box with wires sticking out of it saying that he had a bomb. the suspects made their getaway down highway 85 and ended up crashing near highway 87. they were apprehended and the police looked at the car and found the device. they found in the bomb squad and detonated the device. no injuries and both freeways reopened again about 4:30 p.m.. >>reporter: in san jose things have returned back to normal. people have been let back into their homes. now we are here on one of many streets that were evacuate. neighbors to tell me that police officers showed up around 1:00 p.m. saying that they had to leave their houses. they were given 10 minutes to gather what
