1 muny does follow a similar procedure so it's likely you could face delays. i want to show you how widespread this was felt. and all the way up to santa rosa in the north. and down the coast, and a lot of responsive. 634-miles away from the epicenter. when you're home and in bed which most people were rat 5:30 in the morning it's a lot easier to feel. things are quiet and calm. a lot more people are going to be feeling us they felt it. let's go to dean in the newsroom who is monitoring the work come -- word coming in from our viewers. >> not only are we getting tons of phonecalls but people are going to our facebook fan page telling us where they were and

what they felt. so many people all over the bay area are waking up this morning to the feeling of a 4.0 earthquake. i want to read you some of the comments that people are posting right now and where they are including san jose. fairfield, sanoma, piedmont, we're getting reports of a window shattered in vole -- fairfax also feeling some damage. a rumbling feeling for people in treasure island where there are some reports of damage this morning. let's read you some more. east oakland. debbie, she woke up. now she's going off to the gym. so at least no damage there at her house. felt it in valejo, half moon bay. nothing -- i live in freemont. didn't feel a thing. that is according to don. diana felt it in daily city. it was so weird. it's like i was dreaming the two strong earthquakes dropped. and there were some reports there might have been two. now it's down to just one. a 4.0 that happened at 5:30 this morning. that is where the earthquake is

centered. we're having a lot of our big reports this morning about where they are feeling the strongest shaking. ingrid is saying it really shook her two-story building pretty bad. heard cracking noises that were so proud. i thought it wasn't going to stop. i almost knocked my light lamp down -- night lamp down to the floor. the longest it lasted was about ten seconds. some people also feeling it this morning. and daily city. not in altos. still shaking according to carrie despite the earthquake being over. and also concord, soon leandro. people are also knew telling us they felt it. a nice shaking by san francisco state university. so we're still working to get more information about exactly what happened but we are counting on people to go to our facebook fan page and on our website. there are some good resources there that you can find as far as what to do in case of an earthquake. any time this happens, that seems to be where our conversation goes next.

were you ready and are you ready, and most people aren't. so, we made a good section on our website. you can go there, click on the earthquake link, and you can find out all the things you might need in your emergency kit as far as food and water, medications, the type of paperwork that you should have with you. our twitter feed is also waiting for people to post some information there and our facebook fan page. that is one of the main resources i am using this morning to communicate with viewers via social media. lodinging -- letting you know as soon as we get information. the trains are back on service. i posted it on our facebook fan page. i am communicating with people about where they were and what they felt and for some reason if you have any pictures of damage, we would love to see them. e-mail them to us here. that information is also on our facebook page. so a full-point magnitude earthquake centered. hit not even a half an hour though and we're still working to get more information. >> thanks a lot. and we're live in the field because jackie in berkeley.

when this shook them. and it -- so jackie, you're not too far from where the epicenter was. tell us what you felt and do you hear anybody out and about talking about it right now? >> and actually, the earthquake basically right on the hayward. and hayward fault runs right below them mother-in-law -- memorial stadium out at the campus of ut berkeley. so i'm only about four to five miles away from the epicenter of this quake. and justine was talking about. some of the people thought it was two earthquakes. that is kind of how i felt. the initial shake lasted two to three seconds and the second was a much stronger and longer. all in all, i would say it lasted oh, somewhere between 8 to 12 seconds? whether in that area. that second shake was definitely more violent and lasted a lot longer than that first initial shake. and in fact, the first shake almost felt like a truck rolling by. and the second one -- there was no mistaking what it was out here. and almost instantly, you saw a light start popping on at the apartment building around this

area. definitely felt it very strong here in the east bay. but specifically here in berkeley. as i said basically we're right on top of the hayward fault. only miles away from the epicenter here. >> all right, thanks a lot, jackie, and that is something we were sharing our thoughts about having what it would feel like here in the studio. so the same thing with a lot of people calling each other, calling here to tell us what you saw. shaking what you felt. did anything fall off the wall? >> we actually have a penny right near the epicenter join -- penny. ask good morning, penny. >> hi. >> were you awake when the quake hit? >> my alarm had just gone off, and i know people were saying 2, 12. i almost thought three. because when i first got up, i heard it. i didn't really feel anything, and then also i got a jolt and saying okay, aftershocks, and then bam, it is like right under neither us. my kitchen lamp wiggled, but nothing else. we just jumped. and it got me out of bed real

quick then. i was -- no. getting up. >> you know a lot of people saying that it felt like more than one earthquake. as far as we can tell from the usgs, just one earthquake, a 4.0. it did last a long time and a lot of people felt forts of it. an early part and a later part. we kind of felt nine or ten seconds of the waving going by. you don't have any damage? >> no. the only thing that -- was a little bit of lightening from the ceiling and the kitchen. that's it. it jumped up there. it got me up. that is what i was thinking. i heard something, and then i felt it, and then all of a sudden, bam. and. >> you know what you're supposed to do? did you do what you were supposed to do? >> i get under neither the doorways but i have heard get against the wall oring something so if something does fall it will keep you in a little hole. and i'm only going out shopping today. >> what happens? >> and a wake-up call, you know, both waking you out of bed this morning and then probably getting you on to make sure you have the earthquake

supplies that ewe need. >> right. that is what i have to do. >> a reminder. three days of water for each person in your family including the dogs and cats. if you have them as well. and you need some nonparishable food in that rgt quake kit as well. a guide reminder to stock up the earthquake kit and if you have one, change up the water in that earth quick kit at least once a year. start drinking that water and put some new water in the earthquake kit. but a 4.0 shaking the bay area felt from the north bay all the way down to san jose. this 4.0 hitting at 5:33 this morning. and right now we have angel. another viewer. angel on the phone. angel, where do you live? >> i live in richmond. >> okay, well, tell us what you felt? >> i was sleeping and i felt a small jolt which woke we me up. and we have a bed that is on wood so i thought maybe we had kicked the bed or something. it moved. and then that is when the second one came in. it was very strong, and we have

a huge vanity that has two mirrors put together, and those were shaking. i have a box of wipes that almost fell off of the vanity when the earthquake happened. >> and we want to be clear that actually though it felt like a couple of separate events, it was one quake. were you so it was waive and give up quake. you heard it and felt a rumbling and things kept vibrating. is that what you felt? >> i was very close to running under the door. and i didn't think it was -- >> exactly. we were just losing your connection. yes, it wasn't -- give you time to think, okay, where should i go? >> i think some people felt it at first. and normally with that earthquake you get the p wave and the s wave. the pwave is that first pressure waive. normally not detectable to people. that is when the dogs start barking. that is followed seconds later by the s waive. the the secondary waive. that caused the shaking and the

rolling. i just had a aftershock. i don't know if anybody felt it. it was a 2.0 and that aftershock hitting at 6:03 in the same exact location here on the hayward fault following the 4.0. at 5:33 this morning. so 5:33 and we're doing the news as normal. and you're reading a story. some video was up and immediately i felt it that you stopped ringing. we have these giant lights that are above the side of two heads. they're just huge, and they weigh as much as i do, and they're just swaying and swinging, but they're really a fix like anything heavy in your home should be. so they're really tied up in the ceiling. i was concerned that one might come crashing down. nothing came down. it was a good test in that way. kind of a thing after the last eight or nine seconds. if it kept going more, that is when we were going to get concerned. >> that is what you were going to hurl your body on me to protect me. but at this point, you just stayed right there and didn't do anything. >> i'm not getting any more reports of any damage around the bay area thankfully from

this 4.0 that hit in the bay area this morning. we have a caller joining us right now. good morning. >> good morning. >> hi. >> did you feel the quake? >> oh, did i ever? >> what happened? >> well, i have -- i'm having problems -- problems with my eke way lib crumb anyway -- quill lib bum rum and when the quake hit, it shook me more. i have kaj around my doorframe. it's cracked open. and when you go up the stairs on the outside of the building where the stairs connect to the second floor, that concrete has cracked. >> oh, trish -- the door frame we're talking about wood that you see cracked or is it like up through the walls? >> up the wall. >> okay. >> and then those are -- are they like dry wall? >> yes. >> okay. so you're going to have to get some of that repaired. but yet, so while it cracked some of your walls around the door, nothing did fall off the shelves or break in that way? >> well, nothing broke, but i did have some small pictures that fell off the the wall. >> wow.

assignment desk, they did feel something. i don't know how i missed out on this because people all over the bay area are reporting this morning where they are and what they felt. the first place they are going is to our facebook fan page. be one of the some 300 people that have liked us already this morning, and is now sharing their earthquake experience with us. let me read you some of the posts we're getting. first off, this one from angela was lying in bed and felt a big jolt. my son woke up and ran into my ram. if laura woke up with some big shaking. car lean says she was waiting in bed and waiting to go to downtown san francisco and she felt her bed also shaking like crazy. kevin says he felt it in richmond. also going out to cathryn. she is sort of describing to us a little bit about what she felt and how long this lasts. she said it was definitely a split. one short shake followed by three to four second sharp side- to-side shakes. those lasted about a second or two. jennifer saying she felt it in

good morning. 6:19 is the time right now. and just within the hour at 5:33, we have an earthquake hit here in the bay area. it was centered. so just about a mile from el sorito. it was a 4.0. it initially came in as a 4 had .3. put turns out this shaker is a 4.0. so a pretty good size felt. it was a pretty wide range. a wide radius if we have been tracking that on our map to see where people felt it. you really do see a widespread area. >> i'm sure the usgs map here that came in. and taking a look at the latest shake response map. the usgs has had over 8000 people respond on their website. since the earthquake less than an hour ago and over 240 different zip codes around the bay area. you can see the shaking obviously near the epicenter near valejo ask sneer in quake -- this quake was stirred. all the way up to santa rosa

people feeling this. getting a lot of responses from san francisco down around the coast near half moon bay. and sponsors are close to 20- miles away -- 20-miles away down -- 90-miles away. widely felt that that earthquake hit along the hayward fault. we're going to follow the latest on this 4.0 that hit at a5:33 as the responses come in from the usgs and on our wes westbound site. our facebook fan page. we'll be reading your responses and taking your phone calls. what you thought of this 4.0 earthquake this morning.

so. back at 624 fair and impartial tim. just to the east of richmond. again, 5:43. magnitude 4.0. about five and a half miles each below ground. that's actually pretty much on par with what you expect with an earthquake here around the bay. you can see here on this graph. the average earthquake here is just about six miles deep and today's earthquake was right in that ballpark. that is what we're seeing. in terms of shaking it has been recorded. basically all around the bay area that this has been felt. but most of the categories have been the light variety. so, again, here is where it was centered. 5:33 this morning. if you felt it. this is what caused it. we haven't recorded too much in the way of aftershock. you see the smaller little rings imnighting from the epicenter. most of them are around that 2.0 magnitude. not a lot of folks felt those but but what was more prom innocent was the 4.0 that struck at 5:30. let's get the latest on what traffic impacts this might be causing at the moment. george, good morning. >> bart is just about back to normal. they were on a five-minute hold

right after the earthquake occurred in order to do track inspections and check for any possible damage. thankfully, none was found and so service is already being restored, already has been throughout this system. and what had been a five to ten- minute delay is now being reported as almost completely cleared up. and so, no longer any delays reported or associated with it. and by the way, there was no damage found when bart did its track inspections. morning news at our special coverage will continue when we return. ♪

fault shaking a large part of the bay area. jackie -- he was a little further down the hayward fault. he's in burkely right now. and he felt the erg quake covering another story this morning. jack i can? >> good morning, mark. yeah, basically on top of the hayward fault here in bergly. -- berkeley. only about four our five -- or five miles away. we definitely heard it. you guys talking about at 5:33. i was inside the van at 5:33 when we felt an initial small shake right off university avenue. and initially, i thought that maybe a truck had gone by. seconds later, there was no doubt about it. all in all, both shakes together. i know a lot of people were reporting two separate shakes. that is what i felt. i know there was one earthquake reported by the usgs. but it felt like two distinct different earthquakes. all in all i would say somewhere between eight to 1212

seconds. the hayward fault runs at unc berkeley. and the epicenter just a little further north from where i'm at. definitely felt both shakes here in the berkely area. >> it didn't tbefer ai -- give a reason to raise gas prices. but jack, you know, i, for example, you're looking at an apartment building right there; right? it was dark out, and i'm wondering did you immediately see lights the go on? >> oh, yeah. >> you did? >> yeah, definitely. there are some residential housing right along this area on university. and immediately, the first thing i did is try to get out and get my camera set up so i could get a shot of it. the shaking stopped so i could actually get the camera turned on. but once i did get out, the lights started popping on at all the areas around where i'm at right now. you can see them all flip on.

move back and forth. the first one was a small vibration and the second one felt a lot bigger. elizabeth saying she was half way through her hallway. she was heading to the kitchen table when she felt it and she thought it felt stronger than a 4.0. mary saying she felt it here in alameda but her kids slept right through it. we are getting resports from people in san francisco who were in chinatown and the financial district. people in richmond. so many comments. hundreds and hundreds of comments. we're going to continue to go through them. we still need you to go to our facebook fan page and join in on the conversation. we just posted some new pictures on our facebook fan page on the damage and what you'll be able to see there is some danes that are knocked over and cracks and pictures and mirrors that are on the ground. and on our website, you'll be able to find a special earthquake session that will tell you everything you need to know. not only as far as what happened today and how to be prepared for the future because

welcome back. 6:39 is the time right now. an earthquake struck. >> we are going to roll it back here and tell you what happened here when we were on the air when the earthquake happened. >> he says the us automakers will play a big part in saving you money at the pump. we have an earthquake. >> that is long and still going. that was a long time. it's about two or three minutes before we get confirmation about where had this hit as far as the strength of this quake. that was pretty good shaking. >> when was the last one in the studio? maybe a month or two ago? >> definitely stronger and definitely honger. and after its tough shaking and you're just finishing the read. the light. you can't see.

it was still swaying. right now down in the newsroom we have a sizamograph. we're checking the usgs. that was part of the biggest one we felt like. >> ever here. >> in years that i've been here. >> what does it look like? >> see you right now. >> yeah, first came in as a 4.3 and then we got the location right away. right on the hayward fault. they just to the north. and then they gown downgraded to a 4.0. we had two little aftershocks that most people probably didn't feel. a 2.0 and a 1.1. >> and that definitely was a 4.0. and what was it about five and a half miles deep. and a lot of people felt this one so we'll continue to take your on air calls live throughout the morning and people are being great about sending us in photos as well of any damage. just been slight damage if anything. mostly, it's just damaged people's nerves to wake up that way at 5:33 in the morning. if you could share your thoughts on our facebook fan

welcome back. more on our breaking news story. just over an hour ago, 5:33. a 4.0 earthquake hitting on the hayward fault. james has a closer look at it. james? >> good morning. i put together just a quick shake map to show you. and again as mark said it was a 4.0 which putsth it in the light earthquake category. the minor earthquake cuts off at about three knots. once you get to 4.0. a light earthquake. but still not much damage or injury expected withing something like this. this is the shake map. mark showed it to you a little bit earlier this morning and it shows where people were reporting that they felt the quake and how strongly they felt it. here is the intensity scale and you can tell by looking at the colors that most of the sensation of earthquake was

categorized as light. some light shaking and as it goes to more purple that turns into weak shaking. that is what people were feeling. as you can see, it was fairly widespread. on the whole, it was light in nature. not much damage reported except for just a few little cracks and creeks in the walls and floors. one mile was the epicenter striking at 5:33 this morning, and for a time, it did have bart checking this tracks and more on that now with george. >> that's right. the service was stopped better five -- for five minutes this morning right after this earthquake, and then trains were running manual mode for a while. now, bart did not discover any problems. they did not discover any damage. and the same was true for the muny metro. they were running in manual mode until just a few moments ago. and herethth athe bay bridge, caltrans had to perform an inspection. the fleshhold is whenever there is an earthquake before or above, the bridges need to be inspected. that is come meeted. no damage was found here. and looking at the traffic for

our westbound bay bridge drive. you're looking at a 12-minute driver time. no big problems. continuing bridge check as we look first at the san mateo bridgen. we're problem-free here. your golden gate bridge ride is under a fog advisory this morning with dense fog in the midspan below 250 feet visibility. and looking at the traffic maps, we're picking up some show traffic on 80 in the westbound direction. we'll update that drive time for you coming up. otherwise, the rest of the rides around the bay area are pretty normal. this westbound 580 traffic typically slow through livermoore. no big delays. just a brief delay for 101 northbound as you head between the two freeways that usually where things start to slow down. and as you lookth at the 101 southbound, barely a delay. the driver times are still well under 30 minutes. >> all right. looking at that shake map. and these are responses from people who actually sent an e- mail into the usgs.

over 9475 people already putting responses in the usgs website here. and you see the shaking being felt all the way down to soon the cruz and all the way up towards santa row rosa. so we're thinking about people feeling this quake some 70- miles from the epicenter and 70 he ports from santa cruz down to los altos. people in merin across the bay from the epicenter. many people there setting not responses. and right around the epicenter and up around the hayward fault. this earthquake was centered. just under a mile to the north. >> we got a very big jolt and a long rolling situation here in the studio in san francisco. let's start now live on the phone. we have paul rose with muny to see how they are handling it this morning. >> good morning. >> so what happened right after the quake as for as -- as far as muny is concerned? and what is the situation the now? >> well, the earthquake. we stopped service and looked

to make sure that everything is running normal. regular automatic service. so at about 6.5 we were back at automatic after going slowly through each station to make sure everything is okay. >> so you spent almost an hour going over your entire system and fleet making sure that everything was all right. and we want to make absolutely sure that everything is possible to make it go back to normal. >> where were you? >> and i was at home and i definitely felt it. >> and i think a lot of people were jolted right out of bed. did you get up at that time or did the quake wake you up? >> i was already up. >> an early start for muny. and it's a good thing. you got everything rolling quickly. no damage. and everything is back on time as of about now. yes? >> yeah. everything is back to normal and ready to go for the heavy rush hour. >> okay, very good. so serves again as a wake-up call, and all systems go that bart did the same thing.
