4:16 am
however, the mta board members think it's an important step for low income families no now
4:17 am
in some cases must choose between transportation and putting food on the table. >> i don't think people realize it, there are an awful lot of really poor people in san francisco. i've heard the testimony from some of the parents about the struggle it is to get enough money to get their kids on the bus to go to school and even though it's a relative is small city, the school can be far away, over the wind and fog and something like that. seems like there should be something week can do. >> the board will also discuss an alternative proposal that will allow all kids ages 5 to 17 to ride muny for free. that would cost an additional $6 million and it is unlikely to get the votes needed to pass. 4:17. we'll talk traffic in just a second. but, first, that warm weather forecast, eric, i just can't get enough of seeing 80s and 70s on the 17 day around the bay. >> yeah, every time you see me you'll want to mention the 80s
4:18 am
for friday and saturday as well. it is shaping up to be a gorgeous week around the bay area. however, taking a look at conditions, we are seeing some low cloud cover in the distance. some of you waking up to some fog and drizzle. so that low cloud cover is actually keeping our temperatures on the mild side. we've got 53 degrees for oakland, concord a degree cooler than that, in through downtown san francisco. also seeing low 50s right now for the livermore valley and 52 for those of you in san jose right now. as we look ahead, it looks like later on today that fog will burn off and we'll see a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures mild to warm. it really just depends on where you're located. so we've got pretty much everything slated for this afternoon, 50s, 60s, even some 70s out there. so it looks like downtown san francisco will reach an afternoon high of 61 degrees. keeping it in the upper 50s for daley city, hawthorne bay. as you start to push your way inland and head to the south, that's where we actually could pick up some low 70s.
4:19 am
we could reach for 70 for fairfield, concord and yok and those of you in san hossee. as we head into the middle of the week, it looks like that warming trend will certainly take place. we will have a high pressure ridge back with us, so temperatures start to climb. as we transition into the weekend, it looks like those 70s potentially, some 80s will stick around and you'll see that on your seven-day around the bay forecast. nothing but warm, sunny conditions pretty much everywhere around the bay area. now, it will be a little bit cooler along the coastline, but we still could make it in the 70s for friday and for saturday. and the good news is it looks like we'll hold on to this warming trend, at least the mild conditions and key word dry as we start the next work week. so we'll continue to fine tune your forecast. but over in the traffic center, not looking at any hot spots. we did have a fatal accident around midnight. it was northbound 680 right at the capital expressway, so it looks like all lanes have been reopened but there could have
4:20 am
been some damage to the message sign. so clans clans has been alerted to that. here at the bay bridge this morning, pretty good conditions for your ride out of oakland toward san francisco. no special traffic advisories here or over at the man ma at ao bridge. a drive 14 minutes from end to end. as we take it over to the golden gate bridge, dealing with some fog this morning, so certainly drive with extra caution for your ride into the city and picking up some of our traffic maps you'll see all is well coming down the east shore freeway and we don't have any problems to alert you to on the south bay. you'll see interstate 280 and highway 101 both showing green on the roadway sensors indicating speeds over 50 miles an hour. justine. >> thank you, erica. a violent murder-suicide has stunned the city of petaluma. the victim's coworkers are remembering a well-respected colleague and friend. these killings happened in downtown petaluma saturday afternoon.

4:22 am
everyone. >> kim had a sparkle and a genuine interest in kids, that came first for her in everything that she did. i think sometimes when there's a crisis you see that more than any other time. reporter: becker says that conover especially made sure that no child was ever left behind. >> she as a teacher always came to me with questions or comments about kids and how can we do better and how can we make sure they're okay in getting what they want. reporter: becker adds that not only was conover a respected teacher but a personal friend. kim is is one of the smartest people i ever met. she could go to talking about people magazine and a complex conversation about something within two minutes and always know something or have an anecdotal way.
4:23 am

good morning. in decision 2012 news, republican presidential candidate mitt romney is now responding to a moment involving an open microphone. as jim accosta reports, this happened as the candidates spoke candidly at a private fundraiser about eliminating government agencies, tax deductions and a whole lot more. reporter: for mitt romney, it was supposed to be a private fundraiser, no press allowed. but two reporters, one from nbc, the other from the wall

street journal overheard specifics from romney's deficit reduction plan that he has yet to share with the public. among the ideas that romney said he was considering, eliminating the department of housing and urban development and consolidating the education department with another agency. those reporters also heard romney talk about doing away with the mortgage deduction for second homes as well as state income and property tax deductions. the obama campaign was quick to pounce, accusing romney of having a pension for secrecy. >> americans expect the opportunity to be able to evaluate candidates based on their records and their policies, to be able to lift up the hood and kick the tires and make that determination before election day and what's clear is that governor romney is trying to make the specifics of his policies off limits for the american people. reporter: even at the fundraiser romney didn't spell out all of his plans, saying things like housing and urban development which my dad was head of, might not be around later, but i'm not actually
4:27 am
going to go through these one by one. what i can tell you is we've got far too many bureaucrats. i will send a lot of what happens in washington back to the states. former senator jim tallon, a romney surrogate said on a conference call that voters shouldn't read too much into the comments. >> he talks about different ideas as they come up on the stump. he wasn't announcing a policy. reporter: on a separate call, the republican party chairman said the remarks were meant for a private audience. >> i respect the governor in his comment that what's said in private will remain in private. >> [ indiscernable ] reporter: but the revelations come less than a month after romney slammed the president when he was overheard on a live mic, telling the russians that he'll have more flexibility to deal with more hot-button foreign policy issues after the election. >> the idea that our president is is planning on doing something with them that he's not willing to tell the people before the election is something i find very, very alarming. reporter: it was romney

unplugged at the fundraiser, acknowledging he's going to overcome the issue of immigration, a sign of his weakness with latino voters, that he likes wolf blitzer and that fox news is watched by what he called true believers. the wife of the likely gop nominee ann romney was also at the fundraiser where she called that accusation that she hasn't worked a day in here life, an early birthday present, a sign she welcomed the controversy. she called it a defining moment in the race. jim accosta, cnn, washington. we'll take a quick break here on the kron4 morning news on this tuesday morning with a live look outside right now from the camera on top of our building in san francisco. we have some new developments in the search for a missing morgan hill teacher sierra lamar. we'll share those with you right after this. low 70s for places like fairfield already. and then as we advance the clock into your afternoon highs, you'll still see that blue, green and yellow on your screen, indicating respectively 50s, 60s and 70s around the bay area. so it really just depends on where you are. you may run into some mild conditions, potentially warm for some spots. we'll see mostly 60s and some 70s, 70 degrees expected for fairfield, concord and antioch, but check out downtown san francisco, only reaching your afternoon high of 61 degrees and 63 for those of you in san rafael. now, your seven day around the bay forecast does show pretty dry conditions around the entire bay area. it looks like by wednesday we'll start up with a warming trend. temperatures in the mid-80s by friday for some of our warmest inland areas. it looks like those 80s will stick around as we head into saturday. but still overall pleasant and nice conditions as we start the next work week. so no wet weather in our immediate forecast. we'll continue to monitor that right here on kron4.

a little bit of fog out there now. it's not at advisory level. all of that cloud cover is keeping us insulated. taking a look at the visibility chart right now, napa and santa rosa, on the freeways, right around there, visibility has dropped down to just eight miles, about five along the coastline in half moon bay. certainly allow yourself a little bit of extra time. drive with extra caution out on the roadways. but as we head into the afternoon, that fog will burn off. temperatures will range from the upper 50s for places like daley city and half moon bay to mid-60s coming down our east shore. so it looks like oakland, hayward both coming in at 65 degrees, a degree warmer than that for those of you in fremont and then the more inland you go and the more to our south, that's actually where we start to squeeze out some 70s. in fact, looks like fairfield, concord, antioch and san jose all dealing with afternoon highs in the low 70s. so very pleasant conditions slated for later on this afternoon. if you are headed to the

sierra, i just checked with caltrans, tho chains currently required for highway 80 or i- 50. it looks like partly cloudy skies today, cloudier conditions tomorrow and light winds for thursday. for the most part your temperatures will be sitting in the mid-60s, but you'll certainly want to bundle up for the overnight hours as temperatures will be below freezing. now for your seven-day around the bay forecast, it looks like we will stay dry and sunny for the next several days. that warming trend starts tomorrow, looks like friday will be the warmest day of the week, and we'll continue to hold onto those 80s as we head into the weekend, though temperatures will start to slide for sunday and monday. the good news is we will be dry and sunny as we start the next work week. so one last bridge check to get you out the door. over in the traffic center not looking at any hot spots. you can see the camera is shaking around here at the bay bridge, but no special traffic advisories to tell you about. over at the san mateo bridge, your ride moves well westbound 92. traffic certainly building, but the drive still just 14 minutes

4:51 am
just about everywhere there are train tracks in alameda county, you will find drivers stopped on them, or in this case, making an illegal u-turn on the tracks. from san leandro to oakland, finding drivers stopped on train tracks was easy to do, from big rigs, to drivers so busy on their cell phones, they don't realize they are partially on the tracks. in some cases the driver is sitting on the tracks right next to a sign that reads do not stop on tracks. drivers are required by law to stay behind the crossing arm until they can pass safely. all too often they stop under the arms. if you're wondering, outside the fact that you could lose your life if hit by a train, there are stiff fines for stopping on the tracks. the minimum fine with penalties could set you back a hefty $500 just for stopping on the tracks. i know, sometimes you're just not paying attention, but if a

good morning, it's 5:15. to the latest with our developing story out of morgan hill, the search for sierra lamar continuing, now in its first month complete. yesterday was the one-month mark. it was march 16th when she disappeared. search crews found her cell phone and her purse, but they have found little else. yesterday they said that they have new evidence in the disappearance, so let's go to kron4's will trand. see's live in morgan hill with more. what is the new lead in this case? reporter: the new lead, darria, could be possibly only because we talked about this a
5:16 am
couple of days after she vanished, they found her cell phone and then they also found a bag inside with clothes neatly folded a couple of miles away from the cell phone as well. they took that to a lab. the results have come back. they're not going into details about the results, but that could lead them in other directions, so that is a new hope in this case, perhaps that will help them track down sierra or whoever abducted sierra. i can tell you that the latest this morning is that they will be back out here a couple of hours from now and they will be searching parkway lakes reservoir. and you can see a gate that blocks the entrance to it. and the reason why they will be here is because it's a couple of miles away from her home and a couple of miles away from her bus stop, so the proximity, it's too close for them not to look at. they will be focusing from here on out mostly on the bodies of water in this area. it's because there have been thousands of hours of searches as far as the land is concerned, so they feel confident that that area is covered, if not completely
5:17 am
covered so they won't be doing that. of course there will be more volunteer searches for those areas. as far as the experts, their sonar equipment, this is where they will be focusing, including other reservoirs in the area. hopefully this new evidence, including the backpacks that i talked about. also near the area, they also found a box labeled handcuffs inside. they took that also to a lab. they're not going into details about the results as well. but it looks like they sent this release out late yesterday and perhaps it's something they will focus on from here on out. back to you. >> so it's not so much they have new pieces of evidence, but they now have results from what they have found and so maybe there's some dna or something that's leading them in the search. reporter: absolutely. they sent that to an fbi crime lab. they also had other experts, including experts in sacramento from their own crime lab to look at that. there is possible dna evidence located in the clothing, maybe the cell phone, of course we talked about they took away her computer. all of the results, they said
5:18 am
at that time it might take a week or so. it turns out a little bit longer than that, so they did acknowledge the results have come back. but because this is still an ongoing investigation, they didn't go into details as to exactly what evidence, dna evidence, fingerprints, we don't know. they're keeping it to themselves. but because those results have come back, it is going to lead them in a new direction as far as the investigation is concerned. daria. >> thanks a lot, will. and we're taking a live look at conditions here at the golden gate bridge. you can see some fog in the background, dealing with some low cloud cover over the entire bay area. so because of that temperatures actually running on the mild side. in fact, check out hayward and mountainview, both are reporting 54 degrees right now, a little bit cooler than that for half moon bay, seeing some 40s, however, for places like plalt, 46 over in napa and 43 degrees your current temperature over in walnut creek. i did mention the fog and because of that, it is having its impact for visibility in some of our coastal locations. check out half moon bay, only

reporting four miles of visibility, nine for santa rosa along highway 101, i would certainly drive with extra caution out on the freeways because that fog that we don't have any special advisories to tell you about is certainly out in full force this morning. but the good news is it will burn off as we head into the afternoon and it will reveal temperatures on the warmer side for some of our inland areas. however, on your today's high map, it looks like we got a mixture of 50s, 60s and 70s. it really just depends on where you are, places like daley city, half moon bay coming in the upper 50s. 64 for san mateo and then the more inland you go and the further to our south, that's when we start to see some 70s for places like fairfield, concord, antioch and for those of you in san jose. in terms of your seven-day around the bay forecast, it looks like today will actually be the coolest of the next several. that warming trend starts tomorrow. it looks like wednesday we're in store for some relatively mild conditions. check out friday, that's expected to be the warmest day of the week.

5:32 am
cell phone, the computer as well as the bag, the purse that had her clothes neatly folded inside among other things. those things were sent to the crime lab. they got the results back. they're not going into detail because perhaps that evidence, dna evidence will lead them to sierra or whoever abducted her. the latest in the search is later this morning they will be back out here at parkway lakes reservoir. this is about a mile, mile and a half from her house, so it's too close for them not to look at and they will be out there with sonar equipment to look for any possible evidence, including sierra herself and it's a grim prospect that maybe she's not alive, but, of course, they still have to look into everything. as far as the evidence, we don't know why it took them close to a month to get back all of that evidence, especially with the clock ticking, but it is what it is. another possible item that they're not talking about, as we mentioned, that about a week and a half after her disappearance they found, among
5:33 am
other things, a box labeled handcuffs. it was an empty box in another remote area, about a mile from her bus stop. so about a mile and a half radius, all of these things were found. maybe the dna it evidence came back from that as well. but, again, they're not saying anything about the case. but because of this new development, it will lead them in a different direction as far as the investigation. they will not primarily focus on the land searches, it's because they believe with the thousands of hours already poured in, approximately 8,000, and that includes the volunteer searches that now they will be looking at the bodies of water. back to you. so is this going to be new ground covered or are they just looking at it again? because the area around their home has been very well searched. is this kind of a retread here or do you just think they have pinpointed new locations? reporter: this is basically a retread. they have gone back. it's because they got sonar equipment, i would imagine that they have pictures and they brought it back to their office and they looked at it. it's some objects that appear a
5:34 am
lot bigger than normal. we have found out sometimes it's big trees, some tires, some metal objects. so maybe they went back there with the pictures and then they say, wait a minute, something looks a little bit weird, let's go back out there and check it out again. yes, this whole area they have searched endlessly, so this is something that they have already done and they will be back again. >> thanks a lot, will. it's been one month exactly as of yesterday since sierra was last seen. last night in morgan hill, her friends and family held a ceremony where they released balloons and said prayers for sierra. >> just to keep the hope alive, let people know that we're still out here, we're still fighting and we want to bring sierra home. >> i just want to continue the momentum and if sierra could be here right now, she would say, thank you for not giving up on me. >> so we'll have our continuing coverage right here on kron4

so it may not be pain at the pump, but it's definitely still kind of a dull ache at the pump, and most analysts believe, mark, that we're going to see prices shoot back up before we see them go down to any significant level. traditionally we see gas prices go up between may and labor day, kind of a peak driving season, so most analysts believe that along with the higher price of oil still around $100 a barrel, we're probably going to see those prices go back up. it is a little bit of good news, california average according to aaa is at $4.21. as i said, that's down about 14 cents over the last month. we're still the third highest in the entire country, only behind alaska and hawaii. so we're getting a little relief, not a lot, but every little bit helps. >> 14 cents is about $2 for a 15-gallon fillup. pain at the pump is expected to continue, though, as jackie was mentioning. prices expected to go back up. daria. 5:36 right now. we'll be back with more in just a couple of days.
