good morning. work is well under way in san francisco as crews make way for a new approach to the golden gate bridge this weekend. it was shut down at 8:00 last night and will continue to be off limits to traffic until 5:00 a.m. on monday. good morning. we have complete coverage for you on the work that's ongoing and to get you news faster, we're going to turn you to one of our reporters, jackie sisal, work is going full speed ahead. >> reporter: that's right.

you thought you had weekend projects, look at these guys. you can see the tremendous amount of work that's been done. 12 hours into a 60 hour weekend of nonstop work to take down the 75-year-old structure. you can see crews out here right now. much of the span of where i'm at has been taken down. there were two spans here yesterday. one is already down. you can see crews working through the night. you can see they've taken down one of those spans. other jackhammers continue to work over in this area. up to 40 large demolition jackhammers working simultaneously to that i can this down. crews are going to work in two 12-hour shifts through the 24- hour period to get things done. one of the things people were worried about is dust. you can see some of the dust machines they have, spraying water constantly on the area as they continue to work. now, as far as traffic is concerned, when i came in over

the golden gate bridge, obviously it was very early this morning. no real traffic issues, but the best advice, marty, if you can, avoid this area. take the ferry, the bay bridge, mass transit, avoid it all together. everything is going to be tied up. i have a note that christy fields remained open. it's still open to the public. lots of people have come out here. i would not recommend you driving down here. if you want to, walk down here and see what's going on. all this construction, they have a day and a half to get it completed and the hope is by 5:00 a.m. on monday, the new road would be open. >> jackie, you were talking about trying to keep the dust and things down. how is it going from where you're standing. >> reporter: it's not that bay.

you have manual sprayers also. there's a guy spraying water on the job itself. it seems like that's a big procedure. they really want to keep it down. you can see the workers right here and for the most part. it looks luke it's been pretty successful. >> we'll be checking in with jackie throughout the morning. our team coverage continues as we take a closer look at what happened or did not happen when doyle drive was shut down. >> the traffic forecast turned out wrong. instead of congestion, the drive in and out of the golden gate bridge friday night turned out light. in fact, some say even lighter than a typical friday. >> we took the richmond bridge over and came from the north into the city, thinking we were going to avoid traffic. >> and how was it?

>> there was no traffic at all. >> it wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be. it was light. >> with doyle drive, the approach to golden gate bridge closed. drivers had to use highway 1 as a detour to get in and out of the city. you can see not a whole lot of cars on highway 1. many drivers got the message and stayed home. >> the information that was passed out so many times -- i mean, i've seen the information so many times, hey, they're going to close the bridge. >> and it's not just on the freeway. people visiting the golden gate bridge, very few cars parked here. it's almost empty. >> this is the first time we've been able to find parking here without any issue or anything. >> surprised? >> very surprised, yeah. they should announce this all the time. >> the visitors who took the risk and came out to the bridge were rewarded. >> enjoy the view without

anybody. >> now, to get around the construction today, the bay bridge is a viable option. officials are expecting an increase in traffic there this weekend, though. additional toll takers will not be added. keep that in mind. traffic usually gets backed up at 11:00 on weekends. stay away from the bridge at this time if you can. beginningbetoday, ferry service may be the best form of transit. the number of ferries will be doubled this weekend. also ferries will take passengers right to at&t park for the giants game, but we understand those trips are already sold out. you can take public transit or walk to the ballpark. we'll be monitoring the doyle drive closure all morning long.

beautiful weekend, not as hot as last weekend, but still see some nice temperatures out there. nice temperatures for santa rosa. half-moon bay only getting to about 61 degrees today. then we'll see mid-and upper 70s. i'll toll you -- tell you about your week ahead coming up. an incident was caught on camera as you can see when it happened on wednesday afternoon. the suspect's name is michael mag doll ya. he reported his car stolen to police after this crash. he was arrested on charges of heroin, felony possession, hit- and-run and violation of probation. he's in the county jail. >> coming up, the reward is expected to go up in the case

of the missing teenager sierra lamar. as we take a look outside, it's san francisco. beautiful start to the day. i hope you can get out and enjoy it. @

a reward increase announcement is expected this morning from the family of missing teenager sierra lamar. right now the reward stands at $10,000 to bring the teen home safely. she went missing on her way back home from school. her disappearance is classified as a kidnapping. volunteers and authorities have been searching the areas near her home. it's national prescription takeback day. that's when studies show the majority of prescription drug abuse comes from drugs obtained from family and friends,

since overnight last night. >> good morning. this is a live look from our roof cam. you can see bright blue skies in san francisco. we're seeing a beautiful weekend. still expecting nice temperatures, warmer than yesterday. mostly clear this morning, light winds, sunday any and nice and even warmer conditions expected tomorrow. 46 degrees in napa. 48 in santa rosa. as we set the clock ahead, all this green is showing widespread 60s and 70s. maybe even seeing 80s today. as we head out this evening, things things are going to cool off a bit. still clinging to the 60s in the north bay and the peninsula and then overnight hours we'll start to see the 50s grow more

widespread. let's take a look at the afternoon highs. mostly upper 70s out here. 77 degrees for santa clara and san jose. as for east bay inland spots, we could see 80s out there. 82 in pittsburg. a little chillier on the coast today, about 59 degrees for ocean beach. 63 expected for daley city and 83 expected for napa and santa rosa. we expected a warmer day tomorrow. time is 6:17. back to you, marty. back to the news this morning. traveling with chaperons and no drinking. that's two of the rules for secret service agents in the wake of the prostitution scandal. agents now cannot drink alcohol while on duty. they cannot take foreigners to

their hotel rooms and chaperons will attend trips as well. they need to consider their conduct through the lens of the last several weeks. back in the bay area news, a memorial for one of the seven people killed in the/cost massa cure. they held english as a second language class. nursing classes will be held at unitech college in fremont once they approved by the state. san francisco police are looking for a man that tried to kidnap a 16-year-old girl. let's take a look at the suspect. the incident happened on thursday while the girl was walking to san francisco christian school in the engleside neighborhood. the man grabbed the girl, told

her she was coming with him, but she managed to break free. he's described as latino with bushy hair and a thick mustache. police are working on several leads. a standoff that lasted for several hours on friday and involved a fatal stabbing. usually friday morning, police surrounded the rose garden neighborhood. they found a man that was stabbed to death outside his home. it's a man in his 50s. several people inside the home are being detained for questioning. we've got more on the events that unfolded leading to that standoff. >> there was somebody arguing about something. i have no idea. >> reporter: a neighbor who does not want his identity known watched as police tried to get a suspect to surrender.

>> they tried to wake him up. officers yelling at him through the loud speak to recome out. >> reporter: the drama began on friday in the a.m. to report a man had been stabbed outside. the man died at the hospital, but when police moved in to question one of the occupants in that house, the situation escalated. >> suddenly for unknown reasons, he closed the door on the officers, locked himself in the house and told them that he didn't want to talk to them any longer and that he was not going to cooperate. >> reporter: having learned there were firearms in the house, the swat team was called in. neighbors say there was always a lot of commotion at the house, a lot of people coming and going at odd hours, and that the two brother who is lived there were always quarreling. >> there's always something going on there.

well under way. doyle will continue to be closed until 5:00 on monday morning. we have, of course, complete coverage for you this morning and to get you more news faster, we'll turn to jackie sisal who's live at the construction site with an update on how things are looking. jackie? >> reporter: they're progressing right on schedule, almost 12 hours into the first shift and you can see a tremendous amount of work has already been done out here. multiple large machinery out here working simultaneously to take down this 75-year-old structure. you can see it going on right now. you can see some of the old overpasses that have already been taken down. they started work last night at 8:00 p.m. and they will continue all the way through for the next almost 60 hours as they attempt to get this taken down and the new roadway opened back up by 5:00 a.m. on monday. this is a huge undertaking. they say they have this thing

planned down to the very minute. every 15 minutes they check in to see the status to make sure they're still on time. you can see all the work that's going on out here. the big news is obviously this is going to cause major traffic delays. this is a huge artery in and out of san francisco for people who live in the north bay and the best advice is stay away. try to avoid this area at all costs, if you can. if you don't have to be down here, try not to come down here because it's just going to gum things up. take other routes into the city, if you can. take the ferry, take mass transit. people can still come down here and ride their bikes and stuff and even cars can come down here, but they're encouraging people not to come down here. dust oppression is a big issue with this construction. they have the folks out here with water constantly pouring it on the site to make sure dust is not an issue.

you can see another unit working over here. seems like it's working well so far. it's tremendously loud out here and there's dust in the air, but they were moving at a breakneck speed. i was told they could take down one of these sections, one every ten minutes. unbelievable work. >> they're going quickly. you touched on the dust and the noise. it's one thing a lot of people in the area were worried about. you talked a little bit about the fact that it's noisy. can you tell us what it's like to be standing out there dealing with the noise? >> well, it's like standing in a construction zone times ten. you have about 40 of these machines like this working simultaneously. not only that, you have these dump trucks coming and going with the debris. you can see the amount of debris. that's another issue. taking down the structure is one thing, getting that debris out is another. they're working hand in hand as

one crew takes down the structure. there's another crew over here taking the debris and moving it out. it's like a ballet of huge equipment out here working. there's some dust in the air. i have to tell you. one of the things they did, marty, before this whole part of the project started, there was a sidewalk that ran along doyle right there. they had pipe that had asbestos on it. so they took that out before they started the major demolition. so when this project started, that asbestos didn't go airborne. they want to make sure all of this concrete that's being taken out right now, that it doesn't just go up into the air. they're constantly putting water on it. it's almost impossible to keep it to zero. >> that's a lot of concern for people in the area, especially those who have respiratory

issues. good to touch on that and bring us up to date on that. we'll check in with you later in the morning. that's jackie sisal reporting live from the doyle approach. the work we're talking about is happening along san francisco's northern edge. you can see the golden gate bridge marked there in the background. right now cal trans is about halfway through a multibillion dollars effort to remove the approach known as doyle drive and replace it with a safer roadway. the next step in this project is to demolish what's left of doyle drive, basically everything marked in red. while that is happening, traffic will need to be rerouted onto a temporary detour which is seen in green. as you can see, the existing roadway is blocking the path of the planned detour. so what's already beginning to happen right now and throughout the weekend is that cal trans

is going to demolish these sections of the old roadway, clearing the the path for the detour. >> that's kron 4's pam weil reporting. now, you can take the bay bridge that promises to be a popular route. or the san rafael bridge. highway 1 will put you onto the golden gate bridge or you can ditch your car altogether and take the golden gate transit ferry as giants fans did on monday night. >> i was a little afraid it was going to be horrible coming home from the game, so, yeah, i'm taking the ferry. >> no way will i deal with that traffic coming home. >> absolutely, why not a relaxing ride on the ferry to see a giants game today, better yet, a giants win. >> just a reminder, we have

it was an unsettling twist in the case against accused serial killer meso. he was allowed to view four pairs of panty hose that were found on a of women he's accused of killing. meso made that request to view the evidence, but he'll not be allowed to touch it. he's accused of killing women between 1977 and 1984.

oakland police are warning residents about a rise in robberies in the city's food district. the most recent one happened thursday near international boulevard. that's where two thieves robbed a man. friday police were canvassing the area, warning people about the crimes. >> we've seen increase in street robberies later. >> when we look at robberies across the city, the majority of the robberies are occurring in this area. >> what we're looking at is about from freeway 880 north up to about 39th avenue. >> and then from 33rd avenue over to about 42nd avenue s. >> this is an area where we see individuals who carry cash and others carry a large amount of cash. some are predominantly hispanic. >> we have flyers in spanish and english. we've had a variety of descriptions of our suspects. it's been from women and men,

alameda and cooler on the coast today. 62 for ocean beach. 69 in daley city. then we're going to finish it off in the north bay about 80 degrees in sonoma and mid-70s through san rafael as well as mill valley. your 7-day forecast around is bay is showing us warmer temperatures tomorrow and then a cooling trend kicking off the workweek and into the midweek and temperatures may rebound on thursday, but we could see showers in the north bay on thursday. time now is 7:47. we're headed back to marty. happy to tell you this, gas prices are down. it's the 3.82 national average that's down a penny. the state average in california, 4.16 and then in the bay area, a little more

expensive in that. san francisco, 4:27. san jose, 4.15. in the north bay, santa rosa's average is $4.15. the wedlands along california's coast today, efforts to save a dolphin. it got separated from its family and is swimming by itself in shallow water. the fear is it will beach itself and suffocate in the mud. they don't want to agitate the powerful animal. that could put them in harm's way. well, tide detergent may do more than clean your clothes. it could expose you to a cancer forming chemical. the environmental protection agency says it may cause cancer in lab rats. they've asked proctor & gamble to change the formula in tide,

if there's a monetary incentive for the company doing the demolition work to finisherly. >> you know, with this contract, 57 hours is the goal to complete monday at 5 a.m. it is very tight. so there's no specific hourly incentive to my knowledge. we're keeping our eye on the process and we'll keep everybody posted. at this point there's not a lot of off-haul. they have a lot of work to do on site. mostly they're moving the debris out of the way, and they're focusing on building up the roadway. after the bulk of the processing and recycling.

police have made an arrest in a case of two bicyclists hit that happened wednesday afternoon. officials say that the driver reported his car as stolen to oakland police after the crash. police arrested him on charges of possession of heroin,

ammunition, felony hit-and-run and probation violation. now a closer look at the video. >>reporter: two guys were riding bikes in berkley, and the bike rider behind this one actually has a camera mount onto his bike. you can see the wheel there, handlebars there. they're on tunnel road near the entrance to highway 24. you can see they're clearly on the shoulder, not in a lane of traffic and a car plows into them. both men fall. fortunately somehow they're okay. the car drifted over, and then right there sideswipes the rider. you can see right there as it passes, the car's license plate. . >> police say the suspect's car was found at an oakland hotel. police are looking for any witnesses that might have seen

anything in this case. a reward increase announcement expected this morning from the family of missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. the amount stands at $10,000 to bring the teen home safely. she went missing on her way to school back on march 16. investigators have since classified her disappearance as a kidnapping. the sheriff's office and hundreds of volunteers have been combing areas near her home. the class kids foundation also helping with that search effort. still ahead, we'll explaining why police want to get ahold of your prescription drugs today. we'll take a live look outside at the bay bridge. plenty of sunshine and a beautiful day around the bay. we'll be right back.

everything is on schedule according to those on the bridge project, and here with the forecast is joan. >> you can see mostly clear, lots of sunshine this morning. we're expecting a gorgeous day, so we're starting the day with mostly clear skies and light winds. we're going to see mostly sunny conditions, but could see fog and low clouds build along the coastline, and then tomorrow is going to be even warmer than today. taking a look at current conditions, about 53 degrees in santa rosa, already 56 in san francisco. we're going to see 70s and even 80s, so a gorgeous day.

76 in san jose, a warmer 78 degrees in livermore, but a little cooler in areas. not ideal beach weather, but 80 degrees for napa. mid 70s expected. warmer conditions tomorrow expected, then a little bit of a cooldown as we start the workweek, could even see a chance of showers for the north bay on thursday. traveling with chaperons and no drinking are new rules for the secret service in the wake of the prostitution scandal. they're not allowed to take foreigners to their hotel rooms and chaperons will accompany

agents on some trips as well. the secret service director is urging agents to consider their conduct through the lens of the past several weeks. today is national drug prescription take back day, including right here in the bay area, police accepting unwanted or expired medication. the majority of drug abuse comes from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet. drugs not accepted are liquid meds, needles, inhalers or patch medication. marijuana and methamphetamine are also not expected. all you have to do is log onto the website for drop off sites. check under news links. a memorial for one of the seven people killed in the university massacre earlier this month. students just recently returned to calm puss since the first time since the shooting rampage.

police in san jose investigating the standoff that lasted several hours friday that involved a fatal stabbing. early friday morning the s.w.a.t. team sounded a home in san jose's rose garden neighborhood where a man was found stabbed to death outside. the victim has so far been identified only as a man in his 50s. so far no arrests, but several people are being detained for questioning. >>reporter: a neighbor who does not want his identity known watched as the s.w.a.t. team tried to get the man hold up in this house at the corner of cleveland and forest to

surrender. >> all morning long telling him to come out. they were yelling through the loudspeakers. >>reporter: the drama began when someone inside the house called 911 to report that a man had been stabbed outside. the man later died at the hospital, but when police moved in to question one of the occupants of the house, the situation escalated. >> suddenly for unknown reasons he closed the door and locked himself in the house and told them he didn't want to talk to them any longer and he was not going to cooperate. >>reporter: having already learned there were fire arms in the house, the s.w.a.t. team was called in and the neighborhood was sealed off. three area schools were under orders to shelter in place. neighbors say there was a lot of commotion at the house and that the two brothers that lived there were always quarter recalling. >> there was always something going on over there.

they just lived their own life and did what they wanted to do. >>reporter: police tossed a phone through the window and called for hours, called in the bomb squad and considered the robot until finally he surrendered. it's time to check in with henry. consider is octopus. the octopus is brilliant so says our next guest. we can also learn a lot from ground squirrels and centipedes. why we can be safer if we pay attention to nature. coming up.

the whole swath because they've been surviving in an unpredictable world. >> for example? >> i like ground squirrels. actually, they communicate with their predators in their predators' own language. they make alarm calls to hawks and coyotes, and that tells that predator, i know you're looking at me and can't sneak up. snakes don't hear, but they actually pop up their tail. if that snake is a rattlesnake, they heat up their tail as well because they see in infrared. >> once again, i can't heat up my tail what do i learn from that? >> we can learn to understand better what our our adversaries are thinking.

good morning. welcome back. we've been reporting on the approach to the godden gate bridge, doyle drive shut down this weekend. taking a look at the traffic

and the work that started last week. it will be closed until 5:00 monday morning. we have complete coverage this saturday morning, and to get you more news fast, we want to turn now to our solo reporter, jacque reporting live from the demolition project. jacque, still full speed ahead, right? >>reporter: definitely, marty. a little over 12 hours into the project, and they've made a tremendous amount of progress. this is going to go to monday at 5 a.m., or at least that's the hope. so far they've taken down a huge amount of the structure already. they still have a lot of work to do. eventually i'm being told that 65,000 tons of debris will be generated once this is down.

they're working in two 12 hour shifts, only 60 hours to actually complete the entire job, so working at break neck speed. what's going to happen to all of this debris? you can see machines working on it right now. the concrete is going to be crushed and separated from the steel and all that is going to be recycle. another concern is the dust out here, constantly spraying water on the project. the epa is constantly monitoring the air. how is it going to affect traffic? so far down here it hasn't affected the runners at all.

the best thing to do is avoid it. stay away from the area, because not only is it a traffic area, but it's loud, dusty and not a great place to be. they say to take alternative routes. they have a long way to go, but already a lot done. >> thank you, and we'll be checking in throughout the morning. the alert has been out. it is out now. a lot of people know about this, but there's a large group of people in maroon county that will head into san francisco tonight because it's prom night. school administrators are concerned, but working on a strategy to make sure that the kids don't miss this important

event. >>reporter: the school principal has a battle plan for the prom. he will get in early and set up shop to direct students around any traffic tie-ups. >> i've got a phone and i pad and laptop, and we'll be using whichever has the best reception. >>reporter: did you try and move prom when you found out about this? >> we wish we had that option, but we plan a year ahead of time. >> i wish they had scheduled it at a different time. >>reporter: many students say they're not happy about the demolition colliding with prom, but are adjusting plans accordingly. >> we are planning to leave an hour earlier. this year we're leaving at six instead of seven. >>reporter: this group says they wouldn't consider not going, but say the whole ordeal

is a bit daunting. >> should have rescheduled it. it's so soon, and nobody's prepared. >> well, let's take a look at alternate routes they might want to think about to get around the construction. there's the bay bridge or richmond or geary boulevard across the park presidio which becomes highway one, which will put you onto the golden gate bridge. what a lot of people are doing are ditching the car altogether and taking the golden gate transit ferry. a lot of drivers thought it was going to be a nightmare getting home, but that wasn't the case at least last night in the north bay. i want to remind you that we have a special section set up online on the doyle drive closure, including video and a

in albany a group of protesters continue to occupy land, planning a series of activities this weekend. last weekend the group started protesting at the site that's known as the gill tract. organizers believe the university plans to sell the land to private investors to build a grocery store and parking lot, but officials from the university say it will continue to be used as an open lab. sunday will mark the 20 year anniversary of the los angeles riots after police

in sonoma, napa and fairfield. it looks like things are going to warm up tomorrow and cool off a bit as you start your work week. there's a chance for showers on thursday for areas. back to news, rescuers returning to the wetlands along california's southern coast today in hopes of saving a way ward dolphin. that dolphin got separated from its family and is swimming around by itself in shallow water. the concern of course is that the dolphin will beach itself and suffocate in the mud. rescuers are hoping that it will find its way out on its own. the bay area startup is bringing the car wash to you.

the man believed to have been the last man who helped build the golden gate bridge has died. he was just 17 when he got a job working on the span. he did concrete work beginning in 1933. he had hoped to attend the golden gate bridge's 75th anniversary on may 27th. but his health deteriorated this spring and he never recovered. in other news -- police have made an arrest in a days involving two bicyclists who were hit by a driver in berkeley. that incident was caught on camera, as you see here. the suspect's name is michael mcdoglia and officials say he reported his car stolen to the oakland police after the crash. police arrested him on charges of po session of -- possession

in bay area news this saturday morning, a memorial this evening for doris, one of the seven people killed in the oikos university massacre earlier this month. students recently returned to the campus after that shooting rampage. nursing classes will be held at unitech college in fremont once they are arrived by the -- approved by the state. san francisco police are on the lookout for a man who tried to kidnap a girl on her way to school as she walked in the engelside district. the suspect is in his early 20s, around 6 feet tall, weighing 180 pounds. our reporter spoke to the victim and her friends about the incident. >> yeah, they said this guy tried to steal this little girl. >> reporter: news about an attempted kidnapping has spread

quickly through the ingleside district of san francisco. >> she was walking. someone grabbed her. >> reporter: when that happened on thursday morning, the 16- year-old was less than a block away from her school. san francisco christian school, there was a struggle. the man said she was coming from him but she broke free and ran for help. friends of that teenager say she never expected for something like this to happen on the way to school but she is doing better. >> i felt a little guilty that i wasn't there that -- that i wasn't there that day. >> she's doing well. she's a little bit better now. we always try to be there for her and try to help her out. >> a sketch of the would-be kidnapper was released friday afternoon. he's described as having bushy hair and a thin mustache. those living in the neighborhood say they just don't feel comfortable. >> i have a lot of little ones. i won't let them out of my

[ laughter ] >> what about lavender? what can you do with lavender? >> i would say if you are gonna have one essential oil in the house, have lavender. you can use it in a defuser. it's also great if your kids or

yourself cut yourself. it's a natural disinfectant and it will clean the wounds and it will help the wounds heal without scarring. >> so use it as an essential oil. >> yes. >> now, you talk about -- i'm just shocked. you talk about something called a naked lady party as being ecological. so naturally, we all want to know about that, a naked lady party, the kind you write in the book. >> okay. i i'll stick to the text. naked lady parties are where a group of friends get together and go through their closets and anything they haven't worn for a while or they are fed up with wearing, they take along and they swap things out. so there is a little nakedness because you leave were a new outfit and i have to tell you 50% of what i'm wearing today came from one of those parties. >> you are kidding?

>> no, my my parents and my shirt -- my pants and my shirt. one piece is tight on someone, is loose on another. there's a lot of stuff out there that's great to recycle and use. >> so the book is called lemons and lavender but it should be called lemons and lavender and vinegar. vinegar is a big deal. can you explain why? >> well, i would say if you were gonna buy one thing to clean your house, buy -- by vinegar iannotti it for glass, use it for surfaces -- buy vinegar. use it for glass, use it for surfaces. my whole thing as a mom is to have a house that is not toxic and is cleaned without using

welcome back to kron4 news weekend. we've been reporting for you to some time now about the approach to the bay bridge. the doyle drive will be shut down this weekend. you are taking a live look at very little traffic on the golden gate bridge there on the left and then on the right is video of the work which is now into its 13th hour. doyle drive will be closed until 5:00 monday morning. we have complete coverage for you this morning. in order to get you more news faster, we want to turn to our solar reporter who has been at the construction site watching the proceeds for the past several hours -- proceedings for the past several hours. >> reporter: really the last several days as three prepare the project. marty, you said 13 hours. it's unbelievable what they've

already accomplished out here. they are minute-by-minute monitoring the situation. they only have about 60 hours to complete this demolition. all 34 all, they say 6 -- all in all, they say 65,000 tons of debris will be coming down. you can see the deck has been taken off of this section. another section in front of me is completely gone and they are already starting to work on the roadway. eventually, this is where the new roadway will run as they complete the entire project. you can see workers working 12- hour shifts, about 200 of them out here working these shifts, nonstop until the project is done. what's gonna happen to the debris that i just talked about? most of it is gonna be recycled. the steel is gonna be melted down and reused. another concern, marty, that we've been talking about all morning long is air quality.

obviously, that's a big concern for people. you can see they have these depression units. basically it's water being sprayed constantly on the project. they also have air monitors around the entire construction zone that are monitoring the air quality constantly, continuing -- conuously through the -- continuously through the project. the one thing we haven't talked about yet is traffic. no traffic on crissy field. you can see some of the traffic is getting -- they still recommend that -- that you avoid the area at all costs. it's loud, it's dusty, it's noisy and they want to get people rerouted around the area. they say avoid it if you can. but so far, 13 hours in, marty, it looks like the project is proceeding just about the way they planned it. >> and the one thing that you mentioned earlier is -- they

check their progress how often? >> reporter: every 15 minutes. they know where they need to be in 15-minute intervals. they know what should be going on at that particular time. they've been planning this for over a year, just this part of the project. they have 60 hours. about 56 hours is what they have to complete this. so every minute, every second counts. if they find themselves off traffic at all, that becomes a concern. >> yeah, because they need to open at 5:00 a.m. on monday because thousands count on that bridge. thank you, jackie. why all of this work is being done and why traffic needed to be rerouted, here's more. >> reporter: the work we are talking about is happening along san francisco's northern edge. you can see the golden gate bridge marked there in the

background. right now, caltrans is about halfway through a multi-year billion-dollar effort to remove the old approach to the bridge known as doyle drive and replace it with a roadway. the next step in this project is to -- is to demolish what's left. basically, everything marked in red. and while that is happening, traffic will need to be rerouted detour. so what's already beginning to happen right now and throughout the weekend is caltrans is gonna demolish these sections of the old road bey, clear, the path for the detour. >> you can take the bay bridge or the richmond san rafael bridge. also in san francisco, geary

an unsettling twist in the case of joseph naso. a marin county judge is allowing him to view pairs of pantyhose which were found on one of the women he is accused of killing. the hosery was found around various parts of the body of an 18-year-old. naso made the request to view the evidence but he will not be allow to the touch it. he's accused of killing four women between 1977 and 1994. he will be defending hill self in the trial which begins in november. oakland police are warning residents about a rise in robberies in the fruitvale district. the most recent one happened on thursday near 36th and

international boulevard. that's where two thieves robbed the man. friday police were canvassing the area warning about the recent crimes. >> do you see an increase in street robberies? >> when we look at the robberies lately, the majority are occurring in this area. >> north 880 to 33rd avenue and then from 33rd avenue to 42nd avenue. this is an area where we see people carry cash and some individuals carry larger amounts of cash. most of our victims are dedominantly spanish. >> we are -- predominantly in spanish. >> we're passing out fliers today. it's been from women to men african-american hispanic. oakland police are recommends that merchants and residents look into getting a

>> it's very frustrating our electives and agencies are not taking care of us. >> you just set out on the road? >> this happened in january of 2011 because it takes a long time to build a grassroots movement. that's where it started is with me and i started to literally travel around the states. people on the ground were going, i will do it. i will do it. i will help and then finally, larger businesses and organizations consumer groups and stuff like that, all started join us -- all started joining us. >> the food industry states, look, you know, it's the job of the fda to regulate whether or not the food is safe, and really the evidence about genetically-modified food is a little dicey. so are you suggesting that the food is unsafe? >> no, not necessarily. i mean, we -- we label in --

golden gate bridge. it's gorgeous out there. it will be a beautiful weekend. we're starting off the morning with mostly clear conditions. by the you, it will be mostly sunny, nice and warmer. let's take a look at current conditions, 62 degrees in napa. mid-60s in fairfield. low os in san francisco. daly city, sitting in the mid- 50s. 76 from milpitas to santa clara. 72347 morgan hill. mid-70s from los lat -- from los gatos. east bay will be a little bit chillier but we'll see some coastal fog, a little bit later. so getting to about 61 degrees in half moon bay.

the doyle drive shutdown, work on the new approach to the golden gate bridge is well underway now and is on schedule accord together bridge district. the bridge itself will remain open this weekend and want to let you know about some information that the new approach will not open until monday morning at 5:00 a.m., officials are urging people to avoid the area to limit the impact on traffic. you can see that a lot of people are taking that under consideration, the traffic is light on the golden gate bridge. however, if you do absolutely need to cross the bridge later on today, you might want to allow -- allow some extra time for the potential traffic slow downs. on that note we're gonna slows up shop on this saturday morning. thank you for joining us. join us for kron4 news weekend tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. and kron4 news tonight at 8:00. have a great day.
