first >>justine: johannes mehserle wants his involuntary manslaughter conviction overturned. he was found guilty of shooting oscar grant on new year's day in 2009. he has already served his time. his lawyer maintains it was a tragic mistake and it wants his conviction overturned because it keeps them from working in law enforcement.

>>justine: the city of milipitas is making major cuts to close a projected budget shortfall for next year. more than 50 employees will lose their jobs. city departments and programs will be reorganized. park street maintenance will be outsourced and they have approved a new leaner budget. the city manager says the cuts have to happen due to the loss of redevelopment money. negotiations between the school district of san francisco and the teachers' union have fallen apart. the meeting was scheduled to take place yesterday morning. the two sides are at an

>>justine: and here is a pretty light with no hot spot to talk about. we are following a developing story out of oakland where a police officer came under attack. fair officials say the officer fired at the driver of a car. reggie kumar has the latest in the search for the suspect. >>reggie: in oakland to the search for a suspect continues. it is still a very active crime scene. officers have been focusing their search efforts in this effort since a 3:00 p.m. wednesday evening. the sheriff's office was brought in to assist swat team officers. according to reports a man tried to run an oakland police officer over. the suspect is described as a black male between the ages of 22-28 with shoulder

length dreads wearing blue jeans. >>justine: more on that story in a minute. police have shot and killed a suspect who opened fire on officers during a standoff in san francisco's nob hill neighborhood. kate thompson was on the scene and has the story. >> in san francisco police shot and killed a man who barricaded himself inside of the apartment building. police were trying to speak with demand in reference to a murder earlier in the week.

>>justine: firefighter spent the nine battling a fire alarm fire at an apartment complex. craig skalar shows us a live picture from the scene where the cleanup has begun. >>craig: this is a huge fire. the home is of of scott boulevard in santa clara. almost an entire block of the structure being put up, a town home went up in smoke which it required many firefighters. let me show you some images from earlier. it took an hour and half to get the fire out. you can see how high the flames were.

the he was so intense that it causes damage to other buildings in the area. several hundred people had to be evacuated. the fire has been put out but there is damage to the attic and other areas. the sprinkler systems in these other buildings actually went off to resist the planes in the heat that it was the work of the firefighters that kept it from spreading all around the complex. i am told of the windows in these buildings were actually blown out by the heat. they were able to somehow managed to contain this. there will be spending much of the day trying to figure out, this could've been much more than it was. they were able to surround

spots. typically slow traffic for highway 4 and interstate 580. as always expected for this early hour. there are no delays or problems as you head over from the macarther maze or from the east shore freeway or nimitz to the bay bridge. we are still waiting for maintenance work to finish on the san mateo bridge, we will go to the golden gate for a look at your ride on 101. southbound traffic is still their size. no delays here a long the presidio park with. checking traffic maps and looking at the road with sensors you'll see the ride on interstate 80 looks good. problem free for the commute on 680 southbound as well. into dublin and the dublin to castro valley is a problem free. the south bay freeways, green on the sensors and means speeds of 50 mi. per hour or better. the same is true from the right ran on 11 southbound.
