they try to stop the car since the turn on their lights they say the car took off at a high rate of speed down seventh street in only a few minutes it lost control and then struck one of the palm trees that you see there. there were two people inside the car at the time of the accident. >> reporter: according to the chp the driver was announced dead on scene. the other was taken to a local hospital with a non life- threatening injuries. we had a chance to talk with the chp spokesperson earlier this morning. we went to know why they were down here and exactly how fast the pursuit was. >> this area is close to the west bound off ramp. oftentimes officers will loop this area as they go from point a to point because--to point b.

turn to jackie for an update. >> reporter: good morning, you can see that the cars are still up here and more than five hours after this it took the life of one person and according to the chp or around 2:00 a.m., one of the patrol cars was coming through the port of oakland they noticed the car rolling through a stop sign there initiated a traffic stop and turn on the lights and sirens at that point the car took off at a high rate of speed. if they say the car lost control and slammed into the concrete that you see there. there were two people inside the car at the time of the accident. monk both of the mills were in their late teens to early 20s. the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. the passenger was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive with of non-life threatening injuries.
