a swarm of earthquakes hit southern california cutting power to thousands of people. it registered in the 5.5 magnitude area. and they may not have won at all, but the little leaguers from petaluma did us proud and they have a reason to celebrate as they return to the bay area today. first, a quick check on bay area weather and traffic. let's start with the forecast. >> we have some high clouds to contend with. more cloud cover situated along the coast line. the visibility is looking all right here at the golden gate bridge; however, we're seeing more sunshine into the afternoon temperatures will be warmer compared to the weekend as we head into the evening hours. looks like the clouds will make a comeback. we'll have the light winds into the forecast. coming up in the next report, i will show you afternoon highs and the look at what is on tap the rest of the workweek. that is coming up in just a bit. at 6:00, it's time for a check on your morning commute with robin. >> good morning, erica. we have slow traffic heading into san francisco.

and a major delay. the meter lights remain off and starting backups beyond the end of the parking lot. be sure to give yourself extra time this morning into san francisco. elizabeth -- it's still moving slow across the upper deck into the city and to the east bay, there is some slow traffic on highway 4, westbound out of antioch and westbound 580 as well as you work your way off of the ala -- altamont pass and traffic is looking good, light north bay traffic remains trouble free, mark. >> thank you, robin. >> won't to -- we want to start with tropical storm isaac expected to strengthen into a hurricane. we're seeing warnings posted long the gulf coast. the latest forecast track from the national hurricane center and employed it. had this is the center of the storm in the gulf. look at the heavy rain bands over the state of florida and that is going farther to the west and to the gulf coast and

near new orleans. the seven-year anniversary of hurricane katrina is wednesday. isaac is expected to come on shore as a cat gory 1 store. the republican national convention in tampa is put on hold because of isaac and even though the storm is farther to the west and showing you the latest video out of florida with the strong wind squalls. tampa's mayor believes the rnc made the right call delaying the convention. >> we recognize that while they could probably have gone forward with it, just that minimal potential risk of sustained winds across the bridge and having to refigure the transportation logistics, it was the right decision. >> tampa will see sustained winds 25 to 35 miles per hour and expecting two inches of rain. most of the speakers set to

take the convention stage today are scheduled for later in the week and we're watching what is expected to become hurricane isaac make its way towards new orleans. thousands in louisiana, mississippi, and alabama have been leaving their coastal homes this morning as the storm is expected to gain strength. louisiana governor is calling for that state of emergency. >> the state has in our possession, 75 generators that we have bought in anticipation of these types of storms. and just as an order of magnitude of the commodities available, there is over 359,000mres, 649,000 bottles of water, 1.6 million sand bags and over 17,000 tarps. and there are many other commodities and other resources that are available as l. >> and the latest forecast track, a category 1 hurricane expected to make fall near new orleans on wednesday morn. >> the average price of gas

jumped seven cents over the past few weeks. with isaac, we'll have so see the impact as time goes by and let's go to our solo reporter jackie live in berkeley and looking at the prices. talking about the timing of when we could see an effect. hi, jackie. >> reporter: we haven't seen giant jumps yet and that is predicated on what is happening to isaac. we have seen the companies shut down the offshore drilling and there is a lot of refining. bp evacuated all of the short- term rigs and evacuate on evacuated everyone. it could be affectioned by this and that is goings to have an affect on gas prices and that is up seven cents the last few weeks nationally. and on top of that, we saw the refinery in richmond and we may

so that reverberate across the nation if isaac has its name and look at the numbers according to aaa. nationally, it's at $3.75; california, $4.13 and that is up almost 30 cents the last month and that has to do with the richmond fire we talked about. oakland, 4:15 and san jose at $4.16 and that is not only the production there in the gulf that will have an affect on, this but the refineries in that area and that is called refinery row through new orleans, alabama, mississippi area. forty% of the nation's refinery work goes on down there. if those get shut down, that can mean some big gas prices spiked in the near future. everyone has their fingers crossed that isaac doesn't do the damage that katrina did. >> and talking about the gas prices and our team coverage

continues in the newsroom with justeen. >> we're watching the live pictures out of the miami area. where tropical storm isaac lashed the florida keys and miami. we're seeing a lot of clouds in the live pictures and rain drops on the camera lens and the palm trees. a lot of people still this morning without power and from miami through the airport yesterday. they starting to get things back on track and allow the local government offices closed today and in schools as well and the miami area. and the national weather service has still put out a tornado watch for all of south florida that did not expire the last check i saw. i will keep you updated on that part of the story as we follow the latest for you here on the morning news. and watching a swarm of earthquakes that hit in search. 300 quakes strikes throughout

the day and most small to moderate tremors and this is where they hit. this is the salt apsea and that is -- saltan sea and the town of bra lee, which is north of the border with mexico. >> we have had swarms like this, activity like this many times in the past. and in that respect, it's not uncommon or unheard of. and we have had similar types of activity. >> only minor damage is reported. no reports of injuries and more tremors, though, are expected the coming days. and back here in the bay area, police are searching for the person who shot a mother in front of her three children this weekend in vallejo. the police say an armed man approached the 36-year-old mother in the 100 block of cathy allen drive as she stood outside of a car with her children on saturday afternoon. the gunman fired several rounds, hitting the mother in

francisco. we have video to show you here what it can look like. the team is in the final stage with snowetta and acom. snowetta has worked on projects like the new york time square in new york city. the warriors have at least an oracle arena in oakland through 2017, and announced this may the teams plan to move the teams to san francisco and propose building an arena here on piers 30-32 next to the bay bridge. that would not just host basketball games but major concerts and conventions. waiting about 15 or 20 minutes now from the opening bell to see what happens with apple. this is the first day of trading since the company's big victory over samsung and in the patent dispute tried for about three weeks in san jose where apple came out on top. a jury said samsung copied apple's ipad and iphone and ordered the south korean firm to pay apple more than $1

. welcome back. several people were killed in a small single engine plane crash that happened after takeoff from lake tahoe south shore airport on saturday night. this plane crashed into a wooded area and burst into flames setting off a one-acre fire that took about an hour and a half to put out. and everything was so destroyed. even the wreckage in this fire that is going to be difficult to identify, formally identify the victims and the plane. we understand it was a family and there are children included among the dead there. and so as they continue to search, it could take months for the cause of the crash. and after a spring characterized by sit-ins and protests over school close ours and mergers, nearly 38,000 kids in oakland are starting cool again -- school again this morning and many of the teachers will be adjusting to

new schools and there was staff reshuffling last week and nearly a third of the district, 76 special education resource teachers are assignd to the new schools days before the start of the instructions when they did the switches and they showed 39 charter schools operating in oakland, including ascent, learning without limits and the elementary, one of the five schools that had been sleighted for closure. 6:15 now and i want to get a look at the weather what what the workweek is shaping up to be like. >> and this is a back-to-school monday and looking at conditions from mount tam this morning and that is breezy as you step outside and we're continuing with high clouds as well and give the kids a jacket and a light sweater. upper 40s in santa rosa and new hampshire -- napa, 57 degrees out of the door in richmond and 59 in oakland and you will see

we get rid of the 60s for the most part and 70s everywhere else. advancing the clock into 3:00 p.m., we'll see more in the way of orange indicating 80s and that is a pleasant and warm day around the bay area, especially in the south bay where mount view could reach 77 degrees, cooler in through freemont and upper 70s in santa clara. week so upper 80s trickle in for antioch and fitchburg, mid- 80s for walnut croak and pretty comfortable conditions, may be a light sweater necessary for oakland and berkeley and 68 degrees on tap for richmond and mid-60s for downtown san francisco and around the bay forecast, the kron seven-day shows a warming trend into the rest of the workweek and temperatures will drop into the

the golden gate bridge into san francisco and that is taking you 12 minutes and as you work your way out of berkeley, a fender bender is wrapping up near ashby and that is clearing off to the shoulder and that is moving well and slow here on highway 4 as you work your way westbound out of antioch and that is going to be stop and walk and off of the pass, a fender bender there, 580 west near grant line was not blocking for long and look to the westbound commute. traffic is stop and go off of the altamont pass and into dublin and pleasantop and loosens up. it will be a good ride for you to san leandro, castro valley and on to the city of hey wad.

a quick check on the south bay and we have had no problems or incidents from 101, 2ity, 87, 17 and troubling free this morning. >> and thank you. the stockton and ellis street entrance to the muni station is closing today and that will allow the construction of the subway. and that is in affect for six years. it will provide easy access to the t third line and that future union square station. >> a low-flying helicopter is flying over the bay area this week to measure radiation for two federal agencies. you may see it flying about 300 feet over the ground and in that grid pattern. it's a joint research project from the department of homeland

in separate smooths. one shooting happened on friday afternoon&in west oakland on sycamore street. a seven-year-old o'costa was injured and a man was shot and killed in that shooting as well and police say seram gunmen fired 50 shots. he was injured on the back of his neck with a stray bullet and he was playing in a driveway nearby. he forgives the gunman and has a message for hep. >> and looks good. >> you don't shoot a gun? >> the good news, doctors expect him to make a full recovery. they don't have a motive or suspect in the shooting. and thissing with in vallejo, a man approaching the 36-year-old mother in the 100 block as she stood outside of the car with her children. the fireman shot several rounds

and hit the mother in the leg. the children, ages three, seven, and 9 were not hurt. and many in the community are shocked by the shooting. >> we have to put him in jail and lock them up, put them behind the sale of the -- cell of the four walls. what is a better solution besides that? >> the police are releasing a brief description of the suspect and saying that he's a black man wearing's black hoody and black see mask. >> most americans are willing to pay more and if it means saving social security and this is according to a new poll from at&gfk. people who say they years away from a retirement are willing to pay and foot the bill. 53% of adults would rather pay taxes and rather cut benefits. 36% would rather cut the

benefits and results were similar on people who asked if they would rather raise the retirement age or cut the monthly payments for future generations. 53% said they would raise the retirement age. the poll shows americans are closely divided on which presidential candidate they think could do a better job when it comes to social security. 47% trust president obama to do a better job and 44% trust his republican opponent, mitt romney more. >> and so what people say about the likability of the candidates and a pho a -- is have a indicates that president obama's personal characteristics outshine mitt romney. 53% of likely voters said he cares about the needs of people and 39% feeling the same way go about the former massachusetts governor and the president leads mitt romney equally when it comes being in touch with the middle class and he's in touch with women today, 3 in 10 feeling that way about mitt

posted warnings along louisiana's gulf coast and this is that storm in the gulf of mexico and heavy rain bands over the state of florida at the moment and having an affect on the convention here in tampa and now, the storm is the latest track from the national hurricane center, takes the eye of the strengthening storm which is expictured to the be a category 1 hurricane and to new orleans and to early wednesday morning and we're going watch the track closely. in florida, the republican national convention put on hold as the storm threatens florida and they think it's going to stay to the west and somewhere in the louisiana area early wednesday. and haitians are digging themselves out of the mud after a passage of what was tropical storm isaac and resulting in eight deaths. we have video coming in from haiti and isaac passed by haiti early on saturday and causing flooding in the capital of port

au prince elsewhere and no major damage. the neighboring dominican republic reporting two killed and the devastation was less than feared. we're watching here on the kron newsroom are the live pictures out of miami, after isaac lashed the florida keys in the miami area and we're seeing a lot of gray skies here and some people are without power. the miami airport cancelled almost 600 flights and still figuring out how to get things back on track there and this morning, there is still a flood watch for south florida, including the florida keys not expiring until tonight and a wind advisory is issued for the miami-dade and broward counties. the storm may have moved on and they still feeling the affects and that is what we're watching for now in the kron4 newsroom. >> and the flights impactd by

isaac and they live at sfo. any people affected with cancelled flights? >> reporter: no, i'm at the american airlines counter and shouted out a couple of times anyone taking off to miami, they said no. they're going to the counter. no one's frustrated because they're going to other destinations. keep in mind, they could be impacted as well because we told you if they don't take off to miami, they can't get to chicago and here. it's a domino affect. this is the live board now, departures. there is a miami flight taking off in seven minutes from now and that is -- seven hours from now and that is on time. at 9:30 is the next one and everything is okay. the airport manager said stay tuned. if miami decides to shut down the airport or can't handle the full capacity, this could be delayed or even cancelled as far as arrivals here, can you see that it's a long ways out, five hours from the scheduled arrivals and cancelled. that is why they said you

and good morning to you and i want to bring up tropical storm isaac before we get to our own local weather. it's definitely making its park hover -- mark over the florida area right now and that storm is traveling about 60 miles an hour and is expected to hit west of new orleans. could hit the tip of alabama and going from mississippi. week see strong winds and heavy rains hit the florida panhandle and this is looking to be the national track and looks look the hurricane center is becoming a category 2 and that is looks like it's staying at a category 1. we could see wind speeds up to 100 miles per hour and again, heavy rains as well. of course, we'll keep our eye on this and bring updates throughout the morning. now, in terms of what is going on here in the bay area, as we take a look at conditions in downtown san francisco, and yes, it's a great start to the morning and high clouds to contend with. the temperatures in the 50s, 50 in san francisco; 59 waking up

in oakland and that is looking like into the afternoon, the cloud cover is burning off revealing sunshine and temperatures to the upper 60s and 80s and we have a bit of a cooldown in store and when you can expect that coming up come just a bit. morning to -- good morning to you and getting slow out there. give yourself extra time this morning as you work into san francisco and we're had no problems on the bridge into the city and commuters are heading westbound into france. the cash lanes and fast track lanes backing up toward the end of the parking lot and to the 880 overcrossing and to highway 4 and to livermore slow. south bay traffic remains light and the peninsula remains good and north bay traffic is trouble free.

mark? >> thank you, robin. a 30-year-old nevada woman is recovering after jumping from the richmond-san rafael bridge. the officers spotted a ford focus weaving southbound on 101 and san rafael and the driver identified as catherine and drove urn the bridge and jumped out of the car and into the water and continued to swim towards maker dido. she was taken to the hospital for observation. and authorities say a man who shot and killed a former coworker had been kicked out of his apartment recently. a jeffrey johnson on friday killed his former boss whom he was upset with and shot and killed by police. nine bystanders were hurt as the police fired at him to kill him. he was subletting the apartment where he lied and asked to move out so the owner could do the renovations. police believe that added pressure pushed him over the

edge. and chevron closed claim centers after the refinery. a total of 18,000 claims were handled through a combination of the center and toll free number. the 800 number will continue to stay open for people to file claims. it will pay property damage&for the fire. this week, they investigating what went wrong with the hydrants around the fire yesterday that happened around 5:00 near cap and 24th. the firefighters got there and opened the hydrant on the scene and it had no water, which that is rare when it happens. they're investigating what went wrong and the crews were able to bring in water from two other hydrants that were not to far away and the fire was contained to a one-story home. and little leaguers from peta lima are coming back -- petaluma are coming back today

. welcome back, we have a live shot coming to us from miami, florida, as we're tracking tropical storm isaac. it's officially blown through the keys into the gulf this morning and that is jenking dade county right -- drenching dade county right now and that can hit on the same day as we continue to track the storm. tropical storm isaac. evacuations are starting today for workers on oil platforms in the gulf of mexico because of isaac. bp said that eight oil rigs and 39 production platforms were evacuated late yesterday. and this shows you where they are and tropical storm isaac expected to strengthen through the gulf and the company's keeping a close eye on it and all of the weather updates to figure out which is in that

like napa and fairfield and closer to the coast line and dealing with some cloud cover along the peninsula and making way for sunshine and some temperatures. eighty in cupertino and for fairfield, antioch, 84 degrees in concord and 72 in san leandro and pretty pleasant conditions around the bay area, and mild for east bayshore line and shaping up to be a gorgeous day for novato and petaluma and partly cloudy conditions, mid- 60s for downtown san francisco, low 60s if you're going to ocean beach and looks look we'll continue to see high clouds the next several days, warmer conditions as we go into the latter part of the workweek. the seven-day forecast shows, however, a bit of a cooldown transitioning into the weekend. i do want to remind everyone we have a new way for the forecast. any time. and that is our comcast channel

it's not blocking and lots of flashing lights and attracting a lot of attention and look at your westbound commute. you're backed up into san pablo and and that is slow on the antioch side. to pittsburg and concord, it loosens up and the connection with highway 680 is light and tollway free. an accident in the 5:00 hour blocking westbound near grant line and that crash is long gone and your backup is still there and your westbound 580 rides, 55 minutes now to highway 680 and you can see it's just fine, the connection with san leandro, hayward, castro valley is free and a quick check on the south bay and that is getting slow for the ride on 101 and northbound out of san jose this morning. and this is what is in to
