>> pam: developing news at five. for the second time in just five years -- a tanker has collided with the bay bridge. this is video from sky-7 h- d -- you can see the damage on one of the pylons of the western span. tonight -- crews say, the bridge is structurally safe. >> good evening, i'm pam moore. kron4 has team coverage on the crash. charles clifford is standing by with more on the damage done to the bridge. but first, dan kerman is live on yerba buena island -- to explain how all of this unfolded. clifford. >> dan? >> correct. there is a site, radar, radio all types of securities to make sure that these big cargo ships to do not collide. it was at 11:20 a.m. when investigators are still trying to determine how this stroke the tower number six of the bay bridge.

>> and initial findings are that there are not any oil spill or discharge to the water. >> it appears that there is no oil in the water but the coast guard found damage to the double hull ship. >> there is not a-whatsoever but i would characterize it as a crushing. where it collided with the fed during system. that the fed during system--fendering system worked as advertised. and did not compromise the integrity of the bridge. >> is docked and on hold all coast guard investigators tried to figure out how this happened. to make absolutely sure that there is no oil is going into the bay is a

caltrans is saying that the bay bridge is safe. this allusion, as it's called occurred at 11:20 this morning and caltrans had a structures maintenance team on scene by 11:40 to look for problems. this is video from sky 7 hd from abc 7 news showing tower six of the bay bridge according to caltrans, the only thing damaged monday morning was the protective fender that wraps around the tower at the water line. you can see a long scrape mark here. the fenders, which are made of wood and plastic, are designed to protect the bridge from just collisions. >> the very first thing our inspectors look for when they get out there is to make sure the bridge is safe. the initial investigation should that the fender took the brunt of the allusion and preformed as it was designed. about 30 feet of the fender has been damaged and will need to be replaced. it was damaged in a way that it was supposed to be. there's no structural damage to the bay bridge as a result of this allusion. so there will be no repair work done to the bay bridge itself, other than to fix the fender system.

>> reporter: caltrans also says that during the inspection, chp was monitering traffic on the deck on the bridge and that drivers were never in danger. they also say that back here they also say that all they are not aware of any problems with sine inch or alliance but they will examine those items. charles clifford, kron 4. >> pam: while charles clifford is monitoring the sitation there at the bridge. grant lodes is standing by with a closer look at the damage done to the bridge, and the ship - grant? >> today, let me show you would be damaged this is the offender area at the beach bridge it this is what was compromised. and we will take a closer look they are calling these offenders as a patrol said said they are made of wood and plastic.

about 30 ft. need to be replaced. this next piece of video showing the actual damage to the starboard side of the tanker. it is saying that this is the area that was scraped. several feet it was sideswiping the vendor. and no holes or anything significant, fortunately. it is structurally sound tonight. >> catherine: of course today's incident was not the first time something like this has happened. it was the second time in 5 years that a ship hit a bridge tower. this is the damage done to the 'cosco busan' container ship -- when it hit a support tower on a foggy morning back in 2007.

that was a much more serious collision. with the ship spilling more than 50-thousand gallons of oil. the hit caused a huge puncture in the side. the pilot later pleaded guilty to criminal charges and the ship's operating company had to pay a 10- million dollar fine. >> pam: stay with kron-4 as we continue to follow developments -- in the tanker hit of the bay bridge. more tonight -- along with updates on the web at kron- 4-dot-com, and our facebook and twitter pages. >> after nearly one year. the search for victims of the speed freak killers has resumed. wesley shermantine says he and his late partner loren herzog buried dozens of bodies in abandoned wells in the central central valley. one of his maps led to the discovery of human remains at this site last february near the town of linden. now for the first time, fbi technicians are taking over from san joaquin sheriff's deputies, >> i can tell you we have

however, there is no guarantee. >> reporter: in the distance you can see the backhoes being used. authorities have closed off a nearby road in this rural section of joaquin county. this is the closest to the search site we can get. those with the fbi say it will likely take two to three weeks to excavate this well. >> this is nearly 50 ft. deep. we might not be able to get just a couple of feet per day. >> reporter: at least two dozen people are involved in this operation. they will work during the daytime hours and according to fbi sacramento director herb brown?they will be hand sifting through material. >> it is older, deeper, and of course those present a bit more difficulty than anticipated. >> reporter: they are not saying that this is exactly how much this is being caused. but it is being

split between the fbi and the county. j. r. stone, kron 4 news. >> this is not the first dig related to the speed freak killers. last year remains were found in calaveras weaver and cyndi vanderhyiden were found in remote areas of that county. and in san joaquin county.in linden.remains of two other victims were discovered - jo-ann hobson and kimberly billy. here's a coser look at that dig site. on flood road. crews dug a well right here. and the next flood rd between n escalon bellatoa and waverly rd. one possible victim of the speed freak killers -- is a long time missing hayward girl named michaela garecht. right now, remains which this is on a flooded road.

that shooting. three others hurt. school administrators say, goh was upset about a tuition dispute. >> tonight, the sister of a woman who was set on fire in san francisco -- talks to kron-4. the gruesome crime happened yesterday in the city's bayview district. the suspect - dexter oliver, who you see here, remains on the loose tonight. he is now wanted for attempted murder and arson. police say, he has an unusual haircut -- with the design of a fish on one side -- and a lighting bolt on the other. kron4's maureen kelly spoke the victim's sister about the assault. >> kerstin was hanging off. -- her skin was hanging off. and her skin was also hanging off like this. >> reporter: jolissa craig is discribing the injuries her sister-25 year old starr lamare suffered after the horrific attack.she says it happened after the mother of three young children got in an argument with her boyfriend about some clothes they were washing at this

laundrymat on thrid street. >> she wanted it to leaf and the clothes in the laundry. and he did not want to leave the close. >> reporter: starr's sister says oliver then came back to their family home where he got gasoline starr's stepfather keeps on hand for his cars. it was after thatthat she heard her sister screamingand came outside. >> it was not like any other screaming it was blood curdling. i saw her walking towards me and i was frozen and paralyzed. i did not know what she was covered in it was not even realize that she was burned. she screamed out that she was burning. and that he threw gasoline on me. >> reporter: the victim was transported here to the burn center at saint francis hospital with life threatening injuries. her family says the doctors report that starr is stable.she is breathing with the help of a ventilator.and is completely covered with bandages from

>> a small plane skidded off the runway as it was trying to land at a peninsula airport this morning. two people were on board, including the owner of the plane. as kron four's terisa estacio reports, the airport was forced to shut down operations for most of the day. as special crews had to come in and retrieve the damaged plane. >> reporter: this is a view from above the scene. the four passenger cessna columbia went straight down into slough after failing to stop on the runway.while trying to land here at the san carlos airport. see for youself how the plane is just stuck. airport officials say two passengers on board, including the owner were uninjured. and fortunately walked away from the crash. a witness tells kron four news he knew something was wrong as the plane came into the airport.

>> i noticed the plane in an unusual position. and it was just a couple of hundred feet away from the hotel and in the distance i thought that was quite unusual as he was trying to make a landing. wrong altitude. >> this all happened around 1015 monday. the airport was immediately shut down. as federal authorities came in to investigate. here's a view from near the wreckage. airport officials identified the owner - harry drajpush right there in the brown sport jacket. the plane is registered in arizona. and it was coming in from los angeles. one of the issues the investigators were looking at were these skid marks at the end of the runway. getting the plane out of the slough was an issue. especially because county officials were concerned with making sure the plane didn't break and release fuel. >> we see that it does not appear that there is any

issue or damage >> reporter: near 3 oclcock, crews were successful and pulled outthe airport re- opeened at 3:04. a nearly five hour closure. terisa estacio, kron 4 news. >> pam: no one was hurt when a truck crashed into a business at a strip mall early this morning in san jose. police say, the 'just 4 paws' mobile pet- grooming spa truck. was reported stolen about 6:30 a.m. then about 8:30, they got another call that the truck had been driven through the front doors and plate- glass windows. of the 'up in smoke' skateboard shop at the branham shopping center at avenue. witnesses tell police, three or four men were seen running away. they remain at large tonight. evidence at the scene suggests alcohol was a factor in the crash. >> a man and his dog-- hit and killed by an amtrak train in hayward. this is video from sky-7 h- d -- it happened near jackson street. just before 8-am. investigators say, the person killed was walking

bridge from just collisions. >> this is basically a scrape for the bay bridge. the initial investigation should that the fender took the brunt of the allusion and preformed as it was designed. about 30 feet of the fender has been damaged replaced. it was damaged in a way that it was supposed to be. there's no structural damage to the bay bridge as a result of this allusion. so there will be no repair work done to the bay bridge itself, other than to fix the fender system. >> caltrans also says they will be checking the systems designed to prevent ships from hitting the towers. >> there are a number of measures on in place on the bay bridge to protect it during fog. from fog lights to signs to other different measures. we have no indication that any of those were damaged or not preforming. and we are investigating that now. today's incident comes more >> there were looking get towers 6 and working with the chp to make sure that

serial killers in the central valley. is now underway again. last year, one thousand human bone fragments were found in this linden well. the remains were linked to wesley shermantine and loren herzog. two men dubbed the 'speed freak killers' in the 1980's and 90's. for their methamphetamine- induced killing rampage. kron 4's j.r. stone is he joins us live tonight from linden where digging has again begun again. j.r.? >> reporter: p.m., the digging has stopped because of the darkness. however, what a new date it has been. looking for more victims of the speed freak killers. this is where crews spent monday looking for human bones. less than a 100 yards from where remains were found last year. >> it is difficult for us to make a comparison this is our first excavation of this type.

>> reporter: fbi special agent herb brown says despite that fact, his team is prepared. they are searching a well that death row inmate wesley shermantine has pointed out as being a spot where bodies were disposed of. the fbi has met with shermantine and escorted him to these fields but say their source of information comes from all areas. >> what i will tell you is that if you rely on a statement of a convicted killer and only use that statement that is a perilous path you are taking. and we will not take that path. >> reporter: the well being excavated is 50 feet deep, those with the fbi are hopeful that they will be able to dig at least 5 feet into the ground each day. all with the hope of recovering the remains of victims who have been missing for years. >> the excavation that we are to in right now all this is dependent on weather it could be two- three weeks. >> reporter: the fbi will not say how much this will
