[applause] . >> developing right now at 5:00, gasoline prices soaring with the california average now nearing $4.20 a gallon. and today marks 32 days of straight increases. new tonight, kron 4 investigates why. you've been trying to dig into this and get some answers. how big a jump are we talking about. >> nearly 50 cents in a month.

prices skyrocketing with no end in sight. we can tell you that if you think you are paying a lot you really are. it's not your imagination. look at what's happening in san fransisco right now. right now you're paying an average of 4.13 a gallon. last month it was 3.67. that means gas prices for a single gallon of gas in san fransisco have gone up 46 cents in a month. just because gas prices are high in california doesn't mean it's happening across california or across the united states. if you look at this map you'll see the areas in read, that's where gas prices are around $4 higher. not that many states. california being the big one right there. hawaii also big at this point. >> so there are to refinery fires that we know of. what's fueling this this time? >> various people talk about various possibilities for this. they talk about the surge in oil prices. but at the same time the

industry analysts i talk to say yes, oil prices are up. but the inventory is also up. production is up. so there's really nothing to explain this. some people are saying this is market manipulation. there have been calls for investigation by several u.s. senators that seems to have fallen on deaf ears. >> when you look at california, is the bay area paying the most like it usually is. >> we do pay the most in california. not this time. if 4:13 isn't enough drive to los angeles you'll pay 4.28 a gallon. today kron 4 hit the streets to get you reaction to the skyrocketing gas prices. >> they're going up and it's ridiculous. i don't know why. clearly there's less money in my pocket. >> i can't spend as much money on other things obviously. >> i try to take public transportation more. >> keep it here on kron 4 as we

asking. >> reporter: while 152 bids is out of the ordinary getting multiple offers is becoming the norm. >> one of 12 is very common. one of 40. those are not surprising numbers for us at all. >> reporter: are we looking at another realestate bubble? >> what my partner and i have talked about is we're really hoping we gets more inventory to plateau our market. to kind of stabilize it a little bit more. >> reporter: the idea being more homes for sale will make the competition for them less intense. maureen kelly kron 4 news. this police sketch just in to the kron 4 news room. an image of a man that raped and beat a young woman on the campus of uc santa cruz the victim says her attacker had a full mustache and goatee and a tattoo on his upper right bicep. the man in that sketch is on the loose. his victim was badly bruised

and hurt. kron 4 shows you exactly where the savage attack occurred. >> reporter: the 21-year-old woman was not a student but a visitor to campus. she was walking here on this redwood studded footpath near the upper quarry amphitheater and classroom unit buildings when attacked. the area is about mid way between quarry plaza and science hill. >> i think that's what made this so unusual is this was a sexual assault on a victim where she had no knowledge of the assailant. and it occurred in the middle of the afternoon. >> reporter: we're talking broad daylight here. 12:30 sunday afternoon. there were no witnesses. the victim tells police she was punched in the face and tore show, thrown to the ground and raped. her assailant who spoke with a deep growl and smelled of cigarettes was last seen

running away. a campus wide alert has gone out to all students. >> it's absolutely an occasion for us to just give people some basic safety tips. trust your instincts. >> reporter: there's no indication the suspect was armed but there will be extra patrols for now on the foreseeable future. developing right now the coast guard says that an engine room fire on the cruise ship triumph was caused by a leak in a fuel oil return line. that fire left the cruise ship paralyzed on february 10th during a trip to mexico with thousands of people on board the cruise ship was adrift for several days. among the horrible conditions passengers had to deal with, over flowing sewage and trash piling up.

a storm headed to the bay area. i'm in the weather center with jaclyn bennett. rain is ahead. >> rain finally. we haven't seen much in the last couple months. we do have rain, at least returns of rain coming in on the radar right now offshore and through the north bay. i don't think we'll see much hitting the ground with this first wave of showers you see on the radar. it's going to take a while for rain to make it down to the ground. satellite radar pictures showing showers to the north of us. we have that spotty shower pattern filling in through the over night hours. we'll have rain into your morning commute tomorrow. a look on future cast four. we have rain largely south of the golden gate. and heavier showers. when we move into the 7:00 hour. more heavy rain moves in. widespread showers with a few heavier cells mixed in through the 8:00 hour continuing

through the later morning hours as well. we'll get a blast of cold air. so we're going to finish timing this out on future casts and check out where it might snow tomorrow in a bit. scientists are studying pieces of a meteor which exploded over southern russia. authority haves recovered dossens of fragments from a frozen lake but they say they are still looking for the main piece of that meteor. friday's blast shattered windows and thousands of buildings causes more than $33 million worth of damage. more than 1,000 people were hurt. nasa says the meteor was 55 feet wide. weighing 10,000 tons and traveling more than 40,000 miles per hour. developing crews have recovered the body of a man that fell more than 100 feet at san jose's island park the circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear. they found the victim on sunday and pronounced him dead.

due to the rugged terrain in the area the retrieval of the body was put off until today. also developing one of two people hurt when a golden gate ferry. the crash happened on saturday evening. the coast guard says the motor boat was traveling at a high rate of speed when it collided with the ferry. the five crew members on board the ferry will be drug tested and placed on administrative lead pending an investigation. coming up a crying baby might be annoying especially on a plane but one mother says the passenger next to her took things too far when he assaulted her child. gun shop owners tell kron 4 what could be behind the run on ammunition. new and stunning details about how prosecutors say a decorated olympian and double

. developing right now a man accused of slapping a crying baby on a flight. explaining how it all unfolded. >> reporter: jonah bennett is just a toddler. he was sitting with his mother jessica bennett on a flight from minneapolis to atlanta. that's when she says something terrible happened a man used a racial slur and slapped her baby. >> i was having trouble comforting him. and that's when the guy had

made his comment to me. >> reporter: bennett says she was sitting next to this man 60- year-old joe who she believed to be intoxicated. >> he was being rude and belligerent and i felt very uncomfortable. >> reporter: jonah's mother tried to comfort her son who started crying because of the altitude change as the plane descended. she reportedly told her to shut that n word baby up. then according to the fbi affidavit the man slapped jonah with an open hand causing him to cry even more. >> i can't not believe that he would say something like that. and to a baby. or about a baby. and then to hit him was just -- i felt like i was in another world i was shaking. >> reporter: he's since been fired from idaho based aerospace agency. the company issued a statement saying quote we have taken this matter very seriously and

worked diligently to examine it. >> all the evidence is sufficient enough to support what we're seeing and i think we hope he's punished as much as he possibly can be. >> reporter: his attorney tells the minneapolis star tribune that her client will plead not guilty. developing right now a run on ammunition. just how scarce bullets are here in the bay area. >> reporter: ammunition is in short supply for gun retailers like randy collins at the j and r gun store in livermore. >> normally this section would be target ammo. there's none. >> reporter: fear over luming gun control legislation created a panic mode among gun retailers. >> this kind of panic. that denies the other 10,000 retailers in the united states the hundred cases. so on a first come first serve

basis which is how this market works it's very difficult in a pannish situation to find anything. >> reporter: j and r gun store is using social media sites to alert customers as soon as the new bullets hit the shelves. the ammo shortage is so severe collins says he has resorted to bullet rationing for his customers. >> we've chosen to do that rather than raise prices we limit the number of boxes customers can buy. other shops have raised prices rather dramatically. the current run on bullets follows a recent rush to buy assault rifles. after the gun control debate took center stage in washington. following the sandy hook elementary school shooting in connecticut. you can see bare shelves at the same livermore gun store at the end of last year. the bomb squad had to be called in to investigate a

suspicious package inside the wells fargo headquarters. this closed traffic on montgomery street today between sacramento and california streets that was all happening this morning the package was eventually deemed harmless and fortunately no one was hurt. in san jose a man is dead after he led police on a high speed chase in a stolen car. it all started last night at a traffic stop. the dramatic end. >> reporter: blossom hill road shut down in both directions near 101 for hours because police officers had to pull a stolen suv out of a ravine. here's video we got a little earlier this morning. police officers say it actually started three miles from this location when a police officer triped to pull over an unrelated car. that's when the driver of this stolen suv comes out of nowhere, races toward the police officer. the police officer could hear him coming. he jumped out of the way.

the suspect flees the seen. that particular then jump into his car. they go on a pursuit that lasted about three to four miles. at 90 miles per hour. once the suspect got to blossom hill road he lost control of the suv. there were two other people inside the suv at the time. two teenagers 16 and 17-year- old girls. one of them actually a run away. they miraculously survived the accident. at this point they don't know the motive on why this man went after the police officer. the police officer was uninjured as well. it's the driver of the car that he was taking to at the time this all went down. and that's the very latest. reporting from san jose, will tran kron 4 news. it's over cast in the north bay. we aren't seeing any rain just yet. satellite and radar picture showing returns offshore right now. but it's still really dry out

there. i don't think we'll see rain until the over night hours. a wider picture on satellite radar. a system well to the north of us. the tail end draping across the west coast. extending offshore. we have plenty more showers offshore impacting us into tomorrow. a look at future casts. into the 5:00 hour the rain rolls in south of the golden gate. we're seeing areas of more moderate rainfall as well. the 7:00 hour is still rather spotty but moving to the 8:00 hour we'll see more widespread shower coverage with areas of more moderate rain mixed around the bay area. the same thing will continue into the 9:00 hour as well as the 10:00 hour. heavier rain pinpointed down to the south. as we move to the noon hour much of the rain shifts to the east. we'll have lingering showers behind the main band of rain. by 2:00 in the afternoon you can see showers. a few up to the north. look at the diablo range.

that indicates snowfall. snow levels dropping to 2,000 feet locally. it will be more like 3,000 feet. at the diablo range. a few isolated showers that will continue into the 6:00 hour. into the 8:00 hour start to taper off at about 10:00. by midnight we'll look at dryer conditions. largely over night tonight and through monday -- or excuse me tuesday morning. tuesday evening we'll see lingering showers possibly into tuesday night. rainfall totals are not going to be too impressive. under a half inch of rain in most locations. but we haven't seen much rain so far this year. we can use whatever we can get. snow levels will drop down to as low as 2,000 feet here locally. as for temperatures it's going to be rather chilly out there tomorrow afternoon. the cold air coming in with the system will keep temperatures in the 40s and low 50s for your tomorrow afternoon highs.

48 in san fransisco. 50 for napa. 50 for concord. as for your extended forecast we're going to stay cool all through the week. through tomorrow we have a couple more chances of showers. the first comes wednesday night into thursday morning. and notice temperatures staying rather cool through the week. not as cool as tuesday. but still on the upper 50s. we're going to see cold morning lows especially wednesday morning. and another chance of rain moving into the weekend. that will come on saturday. right now it looks like saturday could bring us some decent showers. but it's still quite a ways off. we'll get through tomorrow and keep you updated on that. let's take a check of the holiday monday traffic at the golden gate bridge. north and southbound no problems. traffic is light and moving well right now. the san mateo bridge not too bad either. traffic is medium heavy right now but still moving well. we'll be back. and a heated exchange turns physical between the call berkeley basketball coach and a

. controversy on the court. call's basketball coach mike montgomery gives allen crab the shove. his teammates get involved to separate the player and the coach. crab said later it's his coaches way of motivated them. when crab returned to the bench montgomery put him back in. it was an emotional game but everything's fine. now there's talk about possible punishment for the coach after this incident and a lot of folks are reacting on our facebook fan page. andrea says suspend him for this. then you have to suspend every coach who simply gives the players a high five this is silly. jeff says what's the big deal? his teammate shoved him and grabbed him by the jersey and told him to basically knock it off. and kevin says nothing wrong with this. it wasn't an attack. it was simply a shove to say

south africa preparing evidence against oscar pistorius. steroids and a bloody cricket bet. those are some of the pieces of evidence expected to be revealed when oscar pistorius makes his appeal for bail. that hearing is expected to begin within a few hours. bringing us up to date on the tragedy that began on valentine's day. >> reporter: south africa broadcasting said it was airing the show as a tribute so people that never met the 29-year-old model could get to know her. reeva steenkamp and oscar pistorius had been together since last november. the double amputee known as the blade runner is being held. his uncle describes his state

of mind. pistorius told police he shot his girl friend by mistake. but south african papers say police sources describe a different scenario. the couple is in his bed room. pistorius fires at steep camp hitting her in the head. she flees into the bathroom and locks the door. that's when pistorius fires three more times hitting her in the head and arms. the final image shows him carrying her body down the stairs where paramedics are unable to revive her. police also reportedly found a bloody cricket bat in the bed room. published reports claim he used it to try and crush her skull. other reports suggest steroid abuse may have played a role. investigators say they found performance enhancing drugs in the home along with evidence of heavy drinking. steenkamp's family will not attend the bail hearing of

oscar pistorius. i'm vicki, kron 4 news. police tell kron 4 they've made a major break in a triple homicide. kron 4's dan is in the news room with the latest. >> it was on february 5th where three men were gunned down. they believe it was a drug deal gone bad. well now this into kron 4 news. there's been an arrest in that case. investigators with the sonoma county sheriff's department tell us there's been an arrest of a man by the name of mark capello age 26. he's from colorado but he was arrested in mobile alabama. he tells us investigators have been searching for capello and have been in colorado for a week. we can tell you they believe that the three men gunned down on february 5th were looking to buy marijuana. that's all they will say about that. they will not say whether or not they believe more people

were involved. they will not say whether they're looking for more suspects or they believe capello is the only suspect. they will say there's been an arrest. they believe he's responsible for the murders. mark capello. arrested in mobile alabama. he was arrested actually on february 14th. extradition proceedings are now under way and they hope to have him back here sometime this week. that's the latest, pam. >> dan we're looking at video from the helicopter partnership with abc 7 news. thank you and we'll get an update from you in the news cast which follows. another developing story. a leak draft of president obama's immigration bill is raising eyebrows in washington. republicans and democrats are worried that the bill could derail a bipartisan plan for immigration reform also in the works. jessica gives us the details. >> reporter: senator marco ricky rubio ya who's led the republicans effort to work out

an immigration compromise says the white houses proposal is half baked. seriously flawed and dead on arrival. former republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan slammed the white house for immigration politics. >> leaking this out sets things in the wrong direction. >> reporter: the debate was going so smoothly. what changed? over the weekend details of the white house's draft immigration bill leeked out. some specifics the president's bill will allow undocumented workers to apply for green cards after eight years. after another five years they could apply for citizenship. but that's not new. the president proposed the same path to citizenship in 2011 and the white house repeatedly says he stands by that. and the white house has written its own immigration bill but the timing of this leak is bad

politics. just days ago mr. obama renewed a pledge to let a bipartisan group on capitol hill take the lead on immigration reform. >> i met with the president wednesday and he agreed to give us the space we need to come up with bipartisan proposal. we're working well together. i know senator rubio was upset with this leak. >> reporter: the president made it clear his patience with congress has its limits. >> we need to take the opportunity and do it fast. i don't want us waiting six months to a year to get this done. >> reporter: some on capitol hill worry this leak was the white house's way of pushing its agenda now. massive spending cuts luming in washington because of sequestration. facing furloughs as early as april unless congress steps in. cuts are set to kick in march

1st. agencies are willagencies are have to negotiate with unions. country music star mindy mccready is dead after an apparent suicide. weeks after her boyfriend died after taking his own life as well. andrew spencer has more on the troubled singer who battled addiction and mental illness. >> reporter: this was mindy arriving to court in 2011 in the middle of a custody battle after going on the run with her son. a year later it seemed her life turned around. a positive turn with a newman and baby. >> she had a long struggle regaining custody of her child who she just recently had custody of again. establishing a home with her boyfriend.

and things went in a bad direction after he killed himself. >> reporter: authority haves not closed the case on his death. and mccready claimed she had nothing to do with it. >> oh my god no. oh my god no. he was my life. >> reporter: dr. drew says mccready struggled following wilson's death. she admitted herself into a psychiatric facility. >> she became so scared of the stigma that she checked herself out prematurely. >> reporter: her early success on top of country music was followed by a downward spiral of drugs, arrests, and jail time. >> this to me is the most distressing part of this story. she's a lovely woman. we have lost her. and it didn't have to go down like this. >> reporter: andrew spencer, kron 4 news.

basketball players and fans alike are mourning the death of long time los angeles lakers owner jerry. he lost his battle with cancer today at a hospital in los angeles. he was 80 years old. he had been in the hospital for most of the past 18 months while under going treatment for cancer. the lakers won 10 nba titles during his tenure and he showcased some of the biggest stars in the sport. magic johnson, kareem abdul, and kobe bryant. we'll have more tonight at 6:00. it's been significantly cooler out there. this is the reason why. as we look outside. you can see the cloudy over cast conditions here and all throughout the bay areas. we're bracing for some much needed rain. as we look on film tracker four radar we're seeing returns on the radar largely offshore. but i don't think any of this will actually hit the ground. as you know we haven't seen rain in quite some time. it's going to be dry out there.

and it's going to take a while for the rain to hit the ground and make it to the ground. looking at satellite radar picture we have a first round of rain showers coming through. largely this area of rain will be dry. we're not seeing it come down to the ground level. but behind it we have plenty of moisture and we'll see showers pretty much all through the day tomorrow. temperatures also right now as i mentioned rather cool in the upper 40s and low 50s as we head into the over night hours. it's going to stay on the milder side because of the cloud cover but it's going to be quite chilly out this tomorrow. we'll have on and off rain tomorrow. a chance of thunderstorms and even snow locally. i'll tell you all about it coming up. well it's a tax return we'd all like the have. no state or federal taxes and a nearly half billion dollar refund. a look at the major tax loophole that made the big check possible for facebook. that's after the break.

. wall street closed to day for the president's day holiday. but that doesn't mean that business came to a complete stop today. best buy just announced a new price matching guarantee. beginning next month the electronics retailer will match prices at all local retailers and nearly 20 major online competitors the chain wants to end the so called showrooming. that's when a customer goes into the store to check out the products and buys it online for a cheaper price. facebook brought in a billion dollars in products last year. but the company paid no federal or state taxes the social network is due a whopping 429 million-dollar refund thanks to a major tax loophole. alison explains. >> reporter: we all want tax

fast food burger chain burger king isn't having things its way. the company's twitter account was hacked leaving whopper lovers to believe that mcdonald's bought burger king. let's take a look closer. here's the page before it was removed. it says quote, we just got sold to mcdonald's. look for mcdonald's in a hood near you. the company tweeted that earlier today. burger king's twitter profile was changed to a mcdonald's logo as well. it's not clear who hacked the account the suspect appears to ñf big changes on the way heading into the over night hours. we saw cooler temperatures than yesterday. as we look outside from the golden gate bridge. cloud conditions right now but the pavement is still dry. rain not moving in yet. storm tracker 4 is picking up

now the reality. this is colonial acres elementary school in the cherry land section of hayward at the beginning of the school year parents were given instructions. one was not to use the school parking lot. in fact there's a sign in english and in spanish that reads staff and handicapped parking only. no student drop off or pick up. but i watched as numerous parents ignore the rules and pull into the parking lot. note this parent took full advantage of a disabled parking except there was no disabled plaque visible. these cone haves been replaced by the california highway patrol because parents were crossing over the double yellow lines which is a big no no. so parents make the turn earlier. like this parent. and this parent. the school bus locations were also blocked so this school bus had a hard time getting a place

been collecting evidence for a week before capello was arrested in mobile, alabama, on valentine's day. they believed it was the result of a drug deal gone bad and those killed were looking to buy marijuana. 26 year old raleigh butler was one of those killed. his mother rented the house where the bodies were found, but she was out of town at the time of the killing. now, authorities tell me that extradition proceedings are underway and they hope to have capello back in the area written the week. they will not say if he acted alone or if they are looking for other suspects. pam. >> new tonight at 6:00, late night violent and out of control brawls in san francisco's north beach. this is hoping along broadway. you can see the activity. residents say it has been going on far too long.

we begin with cron-4's stanley roberts. he has exclusive video in special behaving badly. >> reporter: you are looking at exclusive video of a brawl that according to the san francisco police department included up to 200 people. the fight began early sunday morning after the clubs closed. no one knows what triggered the fight. we know in the end, five people were arrested. three for assaulting a police officer. two officers were injured during the me, lee. and did i links that the fight took place in the north beat section of san francisco. there has been a long-standing problem on broadway with fights during and after the clubs close. the video was captured by residents near broadway that were fed you will with -- up with the violence that takes place here. the fight lasted six minutes. it was captured by a surveillance camera mounted in the parking lot. here you can see some people

head coach of the cal men's basketball team, mike montgomery is in hot water after shoving a player during a game. we hear how the team is reacting. >> reporter: with 16 minutes left in the basketball game between cal and usc, mike mont gamry called a time-out. as the players walked to the men much, the coach shoved junior point guard alan crabb. the teammates stepped in to calm him down. the fans were outraged. hours after the game, the stove -- coach issued a statement saying i let my emotions get away from me. my intent was to motivated the student athletes, but my behavior was inappropriate and i apologize. crabb seemed to dismiss the incident, saying it was coach's

a country music star, mindy mcready is dead of a gunshot wound. she was found in her arkansas home. she struggled with addiction and mental illness for years. she leaves behind two boys, one only ten months old. the infant's father killed himself on the same porch last month. she was 37 years old. investigators have been combing through the disabled cruise ship triumph to learn what happened it to become disabled. an emergency room fire on board the triumph was caused by a leak in a fuel oil return line. it left the carnival cruise ship paralyzed on february 10 during a trip to mexico. it was adrift for several days with no power before it could be towed to shore.
