putting the lives on our line for nothing >> reporter: "now the coast guard will continue to check with marinas to a missing boat and use other techonolgy to track that radio distress call. calling in a fake distress call. is a felony. on yerba buena island justine waldman kron 4 news. >> now we'll show you the area where the coast guard searched. the distress call supposedly came from a sailboat about 65 miles west of monterey. the coast guard says crews searched this area right here. it's about 200-thousand square miles. that's roughly the size of west virginia. the search lasted 42 hours. it included multiple coast guard vessels and aircarft, as well as the navy and national guard. right now, a young oakland couple, thought to be missing in south america, has apparently been found safe. but family members are *not completely at ease just yet.

jamie neal and garrett hand. travelled to peru for a biking adventure. then, after late january, no one heard from them. until today. according to the peruvian government, the couple was found today, in a little town -- when someone notified the couple that police were looking for them. but family members say, they still have not heard directly from their missing loved ones. we will talk to the family tonight. on kron-4 news at eight. bar owners in san francisco's mission district are becoming increasingly fed up with their customers being robbed. the most common target. smart phones. kron 4's maureen kelly spoke people at one nightspot. about what they are doing to try and stop the thieves.

different high schools. so, there are four schools on the one campus. the montessori makes the five schools, in this area. just up this way, about one block. you can see this is a densely populated area with residences, and a whole foods. there is a rite aid. there is a bike shop. and a lot of these people have been told to stay inside. multiple gunshots. and just speaking with live witnesses, is even sounded like automatic weapons were being fired. a very scary situation one-half mile downtown san francisco 1 mi. from the coast. as we take a look. near -- santa cruz. the swat team members. one has a shield. in and ask we
