(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> pam: right now at five -- kron4 is tracking a storm headed into the bay area. you're looking live at san francisco -- gloomy skies. the coming rain has some people in san francisco's west portal neighborhood on edge. they have been trying to dry out. since a watermain break last week flooded homes. leaving some un-livable. i am here in the weather center rett jacqueline bennett. >> we anticipated it to be in santa rosa at this point but it is still in the works. through santa rosa and by eight we are talking about widespread rainfall. notice it is one right towards the golden gate. that bay bridge light show will be at 9:00 p.m. it will be dry but by 9:00 p.m.,

10:00 p.m. it will press over the bay bridge. i think that it could hold off by 9:30-9:45 if you're going to see that tonight the initial flip of the switch should be glad. but it could overtake it with rain through vallejo. through midnight the rain will make it very slow progression. with portions of the south bay and to the east bay. the inland valleys will not be impacted until about 2:00 a.m. it will press through, overnight with spotty shower activity. we will finish timing it out on futurecast, coming up. >> pam: some of this rainfall has been in this neighborhood has been on edge. that water main break has left homes flooded and on in habitable non in

the federal reserve has been pumping 85 billion dollars into the economy every month. >> it's buying up treasuries. it's buying up mortgage backed securities every month, it's pushing interest rates lower. it's essentially moving investors from the bond market to the stock market where its the best game in town." >> "i need it in my pocket. i am crazy about it. >> catherine: the last time the dow was this high. apple had just launched the i=phone and barry bonds was still wearing a giants uniform. then came the housing collapse. and the wall street meltdown. in the great recession that followed, the dow lost half its value. it's taken four years for stocks to recover. in the same time, corporate profits have skyrocketed as companies laid off workers, streamlined their operations and held down wages, that's why the average blue=collar paycheck is barely above where it was four years ago. only five and a half million jobs have been recovered out of the nearly nine=million lost in the recession. home prices are still 26

>> to police have a suspect that his stand in connection with the burglarizing of the museum and also violating his parole they say that he is responsible for breaking into the museum and stealing the golden nugget's last year. they put a warrant out for his arrest three weeks ago. >> we showed due diligence and trying to find him into further the investigation. it was not until this past sunday when there was a patrol supervisor that arrested him in the state of oakland. >> why these items were stolen but because this is still an active investigation they are being very cautious about the

information the release. in oakland, kron 4. stolen yacht. the three people arrested are facing grand theft and conspiracy charges. these are names and ages of the suspects. all three are set to be arraigned later this week. three people being held tonight on one million dollars bail. investigators say they stole a yacht from sausalito -- then ran it aground at a pacifica beach. kron4's jackie sissel reports from richmond, where the boat is now -- and shows us the damage. there is damage to the propeller. you can see this

is one of the crewmembers surveying the damage. and the damage that was done. this is video from yesterday. were this entire bizarre thing started. the coast guard received a call of a boulder in distress. and the seven, and at that point they sent out the coast guard. eventually they discovered that three people had stolen the boat. they were still on the boat during this entire process. he eventually they got those three people off of the boat and they were taken into custody. why these people took the boat is still a big question. a very bizarre case. the owner was watching television and saw the news report. and he says that i think that this has been

evacuated from the plane at norman mineta international airport late this morning. shortly after take off-- the captain was notified of a fire in the right engine. the plane was removed from service -- no one was hurt. >> in a few weeks, airline passengers will be able to start carrying certain types of knives in their carry-on luggage. it's part of changes the tsa is making to it's prohibited items list. kron 4's charles clifford shows us what will and won't be allowed. >> reporter: the t s a wants to stop hockey fried items like explosives and start worrying about smaller items like knives. passengers are be able to carry small knives in their carry-on luggage. these are examples that will be allowed the blade has to be less than 6 cm. and also less than one- half of an inch wide. and it has to be a bendable foldable. and the handgrip

at futurecast. more moderate rainfall. the rain will slide south of the golden gate. there is that bay bridge light show starting at 9:00 p.m. it should be dry. 9:45 it could start. by midnight, it will be pressing cellphone of the peninsula. the portions of the east bay. that mean the end of rainfall to the central valley. and gusting winds 50 m.p.h.! you can see by 5:00 p.m., lingering showers. still pretty decent coverage but that will start to decrease and spotty shower activity but it will not be quite as widespread. showers by 3:00.

tomorrow, and even thursday with a lingering shower chances. cooler chances locally. once that passes through will have warm, dry conditions. >> pam: >> pam: two men say they were asked to leave a mall in near sacramento. because they were holding hands and kissing. the same-sex couple says they just want to be treated the same as everyone else. marin austin spoke with them -- and went to the mall to investigate. >> "i love you. " smooching. i would just kiss him on the cheek to show him affection and there's nothing wrong with. >> "like this." >> reporter: hands. it seems harmless, but when two gay men, daniel chesmore and jose guzman, did it at the roseville galleria on saturday, they say they were asked to leave. >> "if you continue to kiss you will be asked to leave the mall period." >> reporter: when a security guard confronted them, they started recording.

>> "and i told you when i first walked up that we contact any couple, any couple." >> reporter: and that's what we wanted to know. so we went down to the roseville galleria and we spotted several male and female couples, holding hands and smooching right out in the open. and as the hours passed none of them were asked to leave. >> "in a perfect world there should be no disparate treatment between straight couples and gay couples." >> reporter: there is no rule listed in the galleria code of conduct that indicates the mall's policy on public displays of affection, so to find out what that policy is, we went down to the management office and we asked the general manager. >> "are people allowed to kiss on the cheek then?" >> "you know what." >> reporter: he didn't answer the question, he said he had meetings to get to and would>> "this meeting's over, thank you." >> "it makes me feel that no matter what i do for society, i will always be different." both chesmore and guzman are tutors at an elementary school. they say they rarely ever kiss on the lips in public, to be considerate to children. >> "every time i go out in public, i am treated differently just because, we're gay."

(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. brigha >> pam: a new blast of winter is making a lot of people miserable. and it's getting worse tonight. it's been windy and snowing across the midwest -- all day. so far, 11-hundred flights at chicago airports have been canceled. and airlines along the washington d-c --are also cutting flights. kron4 is tracking the storm ahead. >> jacqueline: the rate is not far off moving a bit slower than the computer models indicated. by the 8:00 p.m. or, fairly widespread an itching to the golden gate by 10:00 over the golden gate and the bay bridge. if you plan on

going to the light show about 9:9:45 the rainfall could continue. that southern progression could continue as well as the peninsula. for the peninsula, by 2:00 a.m. and also for the inland valleys. spotty shower activity. we will talk more about that with rainfall totals coming up. but first, catherine heenan is here with the latest. >> catherine: millions of people are facing the biggest snowfall of the season. this is north dakota - where the northeast part of the state is already buried. but it's a blast of winter that's pounding much of the upper midwest tonight. it's a major winter storm. and chicago is expected to be one of the hardest hit spots before it's all over. salt trucks were out - trying to keep the freeways open before the evening commute. most schools and businesses around chicago were closed tuesday.

and hundreds of flights have been cancelled here. midwestern airports are struggling to keep planes flying. o'hare's normally packed united terminal -- nearly empty. and look at neighboring wisconsin. in some places they're running out of room to pile up the snow. with dirty mounds of it.15 feet high. on one icy wisconsin bridge.a semi went off the edge.ending up partially submerged in a river. driving was treacherous across the upper midwest. visibility was so bad in this colorado blizzard.you can barely make out the big pile-up of cars after an accident. in minnesota - this car went off an icy road.and slid down a hill. like north dakota - minnesota has more than a foot of new snow. it is the third major storm to slam the midwest in as many weeks. across the border in canada.

they're dealing with a problem you don't see every day. icicles that get so big -- crews have to come and tear them down. a local fire crew in saskatchewan said this one was a safety hazard. the icicle was nearly three stories tall. the housing market looks like it is returning. this is the first full week indicates that the forced federal spending cuts might be to blame. the president's approval ratings are still above those of republicans and there are encouraging signs that the housing market is getting back to normal. fiserv case shiller -- home

prices will rise an average of three-point-three-percent from now until september 2017. the biggest gains are santa fe, new mexico; billings, montana and syracuse, new york. a new study shows employer credit checks are preventing the nation's hardest-hit job seekers from entering the workforce. one in four unemployed americans have been required to go through a credit check when applying for a job. and one in 10 have been denied jobs due to information in their credit report. this comes from a survey by liberal think-tank. the report's author says employer credit checks are common and they're preventing people from >> catherine: boeing says it's ready to get its grounded 787 dreamliner back in the air. the company waing for the f-a-a to clear its proposed fix for a battery problem. boeing says the solution provides three levels of protection against fires in the lithium batteries. the f-a-a is looking this over - but won't give the green light until it's absolutely clear that the batteries are safe. the dreamliner fleet has been grounded worldwide since january 16th -- after battery fires on two of the planes. >> everyone has heard the saying -- "there's an app for that" now - there are even 'more' apps out there. sales of games and programs for your mobile phone are expected to hit 25 *billion dollars this year. money from app sales are expected to climb 62% higher than last year. and industry researchers also say that smart-phone sales will pass "feature"

phone sales for the first time in 2013. >> pam: almost eight-years to the day she got out of prison -- martha stewart returns to court this morning. stewart is defending her company in a breach of contract suit. she is scheduled to testify in the civil case - pitting j-c penney against retail rival macy's over their relationship with martha stewart living omnimedia. the main issue is whether macy's has the exclusive right to sell some of stewart's branded products. the trial could take three weeks. heinz c-e-o william johnson >> pam: catherine heenan has something about your commute. >> catherine: if you think you're alone in facing a long drive to work -- listen to this. 600-thousand americans now have what's called a "mega- commute." they drive more than 50 miles and spend more than an hour and a half on the road just to get to work. the long commutes are typically in big cities - including san francisco. the census bureau says the average "mega-commuter" is more likely to be male, older, married andpaid than thee worker. >> a growing number of

after the lights turn on. >> the bay bridge lights project is considered a new form of art called a light sculpture. this is not the first one. even the eiffel tower have is a light sculpture. but this will be the largest light sculpture in the world is not just twinkling lights. this is a high-tech computer controlled light show. they are individually programmed to create stunning designs and patterns. the will flicker on and off pulsing through the 1.8 m.p.h. and between san francisco and treasure island. each is individually controlled with too wondered 55 levels of brightness. together, this is an animated that can be seen for miles. 25,000 l e.d. lights were attached

to the bridge by hand. these are attached 12 in. apart on these vertical cables. held in place by zip ties they will only be visible from the north side of the bridge. drivers on the bridge will not see the lights this was on purpose to not distract the drivers. these l e d lights are so energy efficient it will only use a $11,000 worth of electricity in two years. the project manager is thinking that it will generate $97 million for the region by attracting more visitors to the waterfront area. it is and $8 million project. if you would like to donate you can have one of the l e d lights named
