(mugging) street crime in oakland. police say the city is a little safer tonight after more than a dozen violent crime suspects are rounded up in a series of predawn raids. >> this gang had no regard for public safety. one of the more violent games we have seen in quite awhile. >> pam: the fbi and u=s marshals helping to serve warrants in cities around the bay area. local church leaders calling on oakland residents to help reduce violence in one of the country's most crime=ridden cities. >> every time you pick up a gun, you are choosing death >> pam: i'm pam moore. new details tonight about the massive crime sweep led by oakland police today. here is what we know. 24 high- risk search warrants. and 18 arrest warrants. were served across the bay area. the charges ranging from attempted murder -- to assaultiing a police officer. right now -- 16 people are behind bars. and police have taken numerous weapons are off

the street. at least one is a stolen assault rifle. police say, the main target today ---- trying to avert a gang war between two violent groups. the so- called 'money' and 'case' gangs new tonight -- we now have newly released surveillenace video. showing what police say, is one of those gangs in action. grant lodes is standing with it. grant. >> yes. this isterrifying moments caught on tape. we want to take a close look at this surveillance video. it shows two gang members who were arrested today.robbing a woman at gun-point. take a look and listen at the dramatic video. now we'll slow down the video and break it down. the victim is carrying several bags.one looks to be an expensive purse. we'll freeze it here.

you can also see her keys.a cell phone in the other hand. it looks like she's trying to use the keys to open the door. but before she can get inside.the two robbers charge her. the lead suspect is holding a black hand-gun. the victim falls to the ground.and the suspect grabs her purse and another bag. the second suspect grabs something else. they take off.the victim gets up and runs.screaming. here it is again in real time with audio. the victim's scream is piercing. police say this happened a few weeks ago near lake merrit. this is the victim is a piercing scream. those two suspects are off the streets tonight. >> pam: oakland police chief

howard jordan. called today's operation a successful fulfilment of a promise he made to reduce crime. as kron four's terisa estacio reports, the chief also says. this is just the beginning of his plan to make oakland a safer place for everyone. >> reporter: this is video of the actual raid conducted throughout the city of oakland which netted numerous suspects targeted for their reported violent crimes. chief howard jordan at a news conference spoke about how he has vowed to crack down on crime in the city and this raid was proof of his commitment. >> i promised. >> reporter: those arrested were all involved in two different gangs. the case and money gang. the chief also added that in his many years on the force, he has never seen such violent criminals out on the streets. >> it was a very violent group. probably the most violent group by have seen in my 25 years. and i say that because the motive was

not your traditional motive. it was not for money or turf war it was because they hated the other gang. >> reporter: as you can see, the room was packed with law enforcement officials, state local and federal agents were all involved in this sweeping raid. the chief says the broad support will continue as they continue to push forward with their plan to make oakland a safer place for everyone. terisa estacio, kron 4 news >> pam: today's raids extended beyond just oakland. continuing our coverage, kron 4's charles clifford shows us that this was a bay area wide effort. >> reporter: this multi agency task force began serving search warrants. 24 in total at two oakland and a run the bay area. this was simultaneous with 16 arrests. this was an ongoing and but here is what

>> developing news tonight-- osama bin laden's son in law facing a judge on american soil today. the government describes sulaiman abu ghaith as a spokesperson for the terrorist network after the 9-11 attacks. now he is entitled to the same judicial process as the american citizens he is accused of conspiring to kill. elizabeth corridan brings us up-to-date on today's developments. >> reporter: osama bin laden's son-in-law, sulaiman abu ghaith, made a brief appearance friday in a federal court room in new york city. he entered a not guilty plea through his attorney. abu ghaith is charged with one count of conspiring to kill americans. in court documents, prosecutors allege the al qaeda spokesperson tried to recruit more terrorists and said about potential post 9-11 attacks on the u-s, quote, 'the storms will not stop, especially the airplane storms."

abu ghaith - seen here with osama bin laden- was transferred to u.s. custody overseas on february 28th and arrived in the united states the following day. prosecutors say the suspect made a 22-page statement following his arrest, details of which are not being released. >> now that we have him under control, there needs to be a really deep, what i would call a dive into what he knows, when he knew it and how he got the information. >> reporter: some republicans say he's an enemy combatant who should not be afforded the same rights as american citizens. they want him tried by a military commission at guatanamo bay. >> we lose valuable intelligence that can be used to prevent future attacks >> reporter: the obama administration contends the u-s court system is the best road to justice. >> the intelligence community agrees the best way to protect our national security interests is to prosecute abu ghaith in an article 3 court. >> reporter: abu ghaith's next hearing is set for april 8th. elizabeth corridan kron 4

news. >> pam: in a rare move, former president bill clinton is pushing the u.s. supreme court. to overturn an act that he signed into law. clinton says, he has had a change of heart on the defense of marriage act. that is the law which defines marriage. as a legal union between a man and a woman. and denies federal benefits to same- sex couples. the high court will hear arguments about whether the law is constitutional, later this month. clinton says, it was a very different time when the act reached his desk back in 1996. he says he now believes the law goes against the principles of the constitution. >> a stash of marijuana. worth a million- dollars. is found at the vandenberg air force base. officials say. the bales of marijuana turned up under some brush. after a 20- foot boat overturned. colonel - nina armagno says, the boat was spotted thursday by people walking on the beach.

(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. investigators at the 'cat haven' wildlife sanctuary near fresno, are focusing on the cage door that allowed a 350-pound lion to escape, and kill an intern this week. >> they say that she was

not on her cellphone and following proper safety protocols. the coroner says, deborah hanson died instantly. when the lion broke her neck with a single swipe of his paw. pele, a ten year old female lion, is feeling the stress of the traumatic week at the cat haven sanctuary. >> she was making -- like almost a barking noise and according to the handlers up here, this was a noise she does not normally make because of the stress. >> reporter: her companion, couscous, was killed after the fatal attack on wednesday. the coroner says couscos was in this feeding cage, separated from the larger lion enclosure by a guillotine=type gate. hansen was in the larger space when couscous somehow managed to lift the gate. >> she absolutely adored cous cous a lion that has been with the facility that they had had for many years. >> reporter: animal experts say couscous just followed a

lion's instincts. >> if you look at your domestic cat, you can see those natural innate abilities to be a hunter. when you take that to a level of a tiger or lion, that's timed by many, many thousands when it comes to predatory ability and strength." >> this is the power that these animals have. it is -- it's a tragic thing that happened here. i just can't describe what my fears are for the people of the sanctuary and all these parents,. every time, for now, when i see an african lion or tiger, i'm going to think of this young lady for the rest of my life as well. >> pam: hansen's father says his daughter loved her job. >> she was so happy. her last two months there as an internship at cat haven were her mother and i agree we had never seen her happier since the two months she got there. >> a winter storm whipped waves off the coast of plum island, massachusetts into a destructive frenzy. the pounding surf caused a home to collapse after the foundation was washed away. the home was vacant and had been condemned in 2009. local resident bob connors said, "all hell has broken out up here." emergency responders in humvees were having trouble navigating coastal roads on plum island. a large winter storm is

homeless clients have walked their problems into molly simones' friendship park office over the years, but what she heard from james flavy coy brown broke her heart. >> "he was just very scared and lost and confused," she said. >> reporter: confused because brown ended up alone among sacramento's homeless after being discharged from a mental hospital in nevada with only a bus ticket and three days worth of medication for schizophrenia and depression. >> "if you could say something to the people who put that bus ticket into his hand and send him here, what would you say to him? >> "it just seems so irresponsible. >> reporter: to the pro tem of the california senate it all seems criminal. >> "because of their disability, i mean, that's the reason they put him on a bus and said hey, 'you're somebody else's problem.' that, to me, violates civil rights," said senator >> reporter: that's why steinberg has written to u.s. secretary of health and human services about what appears to be interstate patient dumping, requesting a federal probe. >> "if the facts are what they appear to be they should be sanctioned," he said. >> reporter: in order to keep federal medicare- medicaid dollars protection protocols for someone in

"he was just the victim here," said simones. >> reporter: senator steinberg is promising new legislation. to help agencies better serve homeless people who are mentally ill. >> pam: charges now dropped. against a redwood city special education teacher, who had been accused of abusing her students. alexia bogdis, who worked at roosevelt elementary school, was arrested back in 20-12. investigators say, aides at the school told them, bogdis deprived students of food. and was aggressive. now -- prosecutors say, the witnesses have backed off those claims. the four-year-old autistic children who are believed to have been victims -- are not able to make statements

due to their age and condition. >> pam: a homeless encampment in san jose. was cleared out this morning. san jose police and animal rescue officers. stood by, as non- profit volunteers removed tents, tarps, mattresses, and other debris. from the 28- acres of land near the guadalupe river. city officials say, camp fires and trash are ruining habitats in the area. the housing department will work with every homeless person to find a shelter. the city is now looking for strategies to prevent other encampments from happening in these fields. >> the main weather headline is wednesda wend--it is windy. g wind gusts. and so for tonight, harley cloudy and clear conditions. saturday morning clouds. details on

>> pam: now for today's market update. the stock market closed with sixth straight gain today-- after the u-s government in february. u-s employers added 236- thousand jobs last month and unemployment rate fell to 7- point-7 percent from 7- point-9 percent in january. and here are todays numbers. the dow jones jumped 67 points to close at 14- thousand-397. the nasdaq gained 12 points to 3-thousand- 244. seven points to close at one-thousand- 551-- now just 14 points away from its own february's job report is out and it shows a big improvement for the countries economy. more than 200-thousand jobs were created. alison kosik highlights where these jobs came from and what it means for our economy. >> reporter: the labor market moved forward in february. employers added 236-thousand jobs. that means the economy has been adding jobs for three straight years now. the unemployment rate fell to 7-point-7 percent. the lowest since 2008. and one notable stand-out. the construction sector is making a comeback. adding 48-thousand jobs in february, and over 100- thousand jobs since november. that's a nice turnaround. considering that the industry lost millions of jobs during the financial

crisis. one of the last parts of the economy to recover after abut now, with the housing market coming back, construction jobs finally are as well. although ground to make up. but diane swonk, chief economist at mesirow financial, says while the overall trend in hiring is good, there's still plenty to be concerned about. >> the trend has been in the right direction, especially in firings. we've seen that seen some reports that suggest that consumers are feeling a little better about the situation today in the job market as well. that's the good news. that perception has yet to show up in the reality of the data, and until we really see people put their hat in the ring and looking for jobs because they know they're going to get them, we won't feel a lot better about the economy. >> reporter: that's the problem -- thousands of people are still dropping out of the work force. they've given up hope, stopped looking. that helps lower the unemployment rate, too. but for the wrong reason. so for now, a good jobs report. but still room for improvement. i'm alison kosik in new york.

(woman screaming) on to another top story terrifying moments caught on video. police say, this surveillance video shows two gang members who were arrested today.robbing a woman at gun-point. their arrests were part of multi-agency raid conducted in oakland that is a part of a crime fighting plan called operation ceasefire -- kron4's terisa estacio has more on the broad sweep that arrested nearly 20 people. >> reporter: you are looking at video taken from a multi agency raid conducted in oakland going after what some officials are calling some of the cities most violent criminals. at a news conference friday. details were unveiled about how successful the raid was. >> 34 arrests. 20 of the search warrants were served simultaneously. the conspiracy to commit will murderer. >> reporter: this operation was weeks in the planning. officials say they acted

quickly based on alarming intelligence about the criminals. >> we found out that quickly we were finding out that there were going to >> they were planning to act violently. >> reporter: as you can see in this video. state local and federal officials were involved in crack down. it is unclear right now, how many were arrested, but local prosecutors say they will do their best. >> we are going trhought he files to charge. once this will be complete we will work closely with law enforcement and in particular, law enforcement to go through the report and so we can go through and bring those individuals into court and to bring justice. >> reporter: terisa estacio, kron 4 news. >> pam: today's raids reached beyond just oakland. as kron 4's charles clifford explains, this was a bay area wide effort. >> reporter: the multi agency task force. led by opd, began serving warrants early friday morning in

oakland and around the bay area. opd says that a total of 24 high risk warrants were served today 21 of the raids were conducted simultaneously. because the effort is actually still ongoing, police are not saying specifically where these raids occurred, but here's what we do know. the main focus of the effort was in oakland, specifically east oakland, where 20 warrants were served also, two search warrants were served 30 miles to the east in antioch there was also one warrant served in nearby brentwood. and finally a single raid was conducted in pacifica, which is south of san francisco. the oakland police department says that even though these were high risk warrants, the raids required no significant use of force and there were no injuries. the raids were completed by 7am friday morning. in the newsroom, charles clifford kron 4 news. >> pam: in san jose -- right now -- two suspects are in custody linked to two murders in the last few days. police arrested regina butler in connection to a murder of 69-year-old -- stanley jacobson. police say, at some point over the last few weeks, jacobson must've shown up at his apartment without anyone noticing. and was killed.

today -- police describe how jacobson's body was discovered. the victim's body this is a photo of the victim -- 69-year-old stanley jacobson -- >> yesterday, the granddaughter expressed that the girl friend was here. she responded. they contacted the suspect. and installed on calling police. and said let us go inside and wait. while she was inside the apartment we located the body. >> pam: jacobson, who suffered from dementia-- went missing back in early february. >> this man. is accused of a stabbing another man to death. vincent gallegos is facing murder charges. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc7 news. the victim -- in his twenties, was found near guadalupe oak grove park. on wednesday.

it's not yet known what led up to the incident nor the motive. >> is this a sign of things to come? we do not know but it is an isolated incident. neither of them have commented. police say the two men knew each other -- but are looking into the extent of their relationship. new at six. a man suspected of striking and killing a 17-year-old girl as she crossed a street near san francisco's stern grove pleaded not guilty today. kieran brewer has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. it happened on sloat boulevard and vale avenue last saturday. hanren chan was celebrating her 17th birthday that day. prosecutors say brewer admitted to drinking before driving. brewer remains in custody
