>> catherine: now at five: >> it's upsetting. we are all rattled by it >> catherine: a homeless man. crushed to death as he sleeps on top of an elevator at the montgomery street bart station. the horrific death raising new questions about how he was able to make his way into such a dangerous place. >> im catherine heenan -- bart officials tonight say they want to know how he slipped in -- bringing a bundle of personal belongings. and how long he's been living in the elevator shaft. new tonight -- kron-4's terisa estacio shows us how the homeless camping out in stations -- is a major problem. >> reporter: on this day - just hours after a transiet man's crushed body was found in this elevator at the montgomery bart station. a group of homeless men were gathered near the entrance of the station. dealing with th ehomeless has liong been a problem for bart. this is bart spokesperson alicia troust. >> we know we have homeless people who seek out bart for refuge. it is trespassing to be in a station overnight it is not

allowed. >> reporter: troust says they are re-examining their security measures of sweeping to make sure homeless are not spending the night at bart. she adds they are working with city officials on a plan to help the homeless stay out of bart. >> we are working with city services. maybe we can help better connect those people to give them what they need is so they do not harm themselves. >> reporter: you may recall last year, many of bart's escalators were shut down. bart officials say they found feces in the gears causing the closure. troust says they are looking into a solution for that problem as well. >> one thing that we are looking for the escalator problems is to do canopies. right at the street level. there is a key to that will lock and protect the escalator's from the elements. and they do like to enjoy sleeping on them. >> reporter: as far as the

elevator. troust says it will be closed until probably the end of the month, as they look for more facts into how and why this happened. terisa estacio, kron 4 news. >> catherine: more details on the death of the homeless man crushed inside the elevator at montgomery station. it happened at 9-30 last night. a man on the elevator reported hearing a scream --- as he rode to the station's concourse level. again -- it is unknown how the man got there -- but he appears to have been sleeping on top of the elevator car. with bedding. >> there is a $1,000 reward for an oakland woman. today, friends and family erica maskaleris lived and worked not far from where she disappeared in oakland. kron 4 has obtained this surveillance video. you can see this woman walking at telegraph/34th. at 8:00 a.m.. we were with the woman's families today it is

not like her to not contacted them. >> we are worried because we have not seen her. the last time that anybody has talked to her was wednesday night. and the video footage from the bakery was from thursday morning. no one has seen her since. she worked and lived not far from oakland. kron 4's charles clifford shows us some of the key locations in this ongoing mystery. >> reporter: she was last seen in this section of north oakland. very close to the interstate 580 and highway 24. she was recorded by a security camera near this intersection of 34th street and telegraph ave. let me show you a closer look looking north. all along telegraph, this video was mounted on the outside

of this bakery. this video camera is on the backside of the building and this is ericka. she is walking eastbound on 34th street. since her disappearance, the family and friends have been canvassing this area trying to figure out what happened. we also know that she lived and worked in this area along 34th street. she attended the first congregational church. just north of lake merritt. friends and family want to hold a vigil around 7:00 p.m. monday evening charles clifford, kron 4 >> the vigil is planned and we will be there live at 8:00 p.m. >> a moderate sized earthquake shakes southern california late this morning. the 4.7 magnitude quake was centered in riverside county. it was in the desert, near anza.that's about 16 miles sout-west of palm desert and about 100 miles south-east of los angeles. it was initially reported as a 5.2 magnitude.but was downgraded.

more than 100 aftershocks followed the 4.7 quake.the largest aftershock was a 3.2 magnitude.most were smaller no reports of damage or injuries from the 4.7 quake, which struck just before 10-am. people reported feeling it up to 250 miles from the epicenter.it certainly rattled los angeles and san diego. it struck at a depth of was 7 - 8 miles this video from a tennis channel broadcast - they're live on the air when the quake hits. you can see their set shake a little bit. you can see also the earth's movement on this seismograph. there is no indication tonight that a significantly larger earthquake will follow this 4.7 magnitude quake. >> catherine: there's been a strange twist, in the case of a father accused of

coming up. >> catherine: a man was shot to death this morning in san jose. it happened around 4:30 a-m on murtha drive near capitol avenue. police found the body of a hispanic man in the middle of the street. investigators still have no idea what happened. this was the ninth homicide this year. >> catherine: san jose business and labor leaders say an increase in the minimum wage will be an economic stimulus. workers at phil's coffee in downtown san jose are among the thousands who now have a pay hike from 8 to 10 dollars an hour. the increase took effect today. the controversial 'measure d' was on last fall's ballot - and was passed by just over 60-percent of voters. for many workers - it means as much as an extra $80 a week. >> living in the san jose is not cheap and we're all also students. we can go out a little bit more and it all adds up.

putting up posters, talking to people and trying to figure out what happened. we also know that maskaleris lived and worked in the area, possibly along 34th street. she also attended the first congregational church of oakland, which is here on harrison st. just north of lake merrit. her friends and family are planning to hold a vigil here around 7pm monday evening. in the newsroom, charles clifford kron 4 news. >> catherine: a disturbing discovery at a san francisco bart station. a homeless man was crushed to death. as he was apparently sleeping on top of an elevator. it happened around 9-30 last night at the montgomery street bart station a man *in the elevator says he heard a scream. it's not clear how the homeless man got into the dangerous spot. tonight-- kron 4 is learning the victim's identity. but the coroner's office won't publicly name him - until his family has been notified >> bart officials say this death re-opens the debate on how to better handle the problem of the homeless at its stations. kron4's terisa estacio reports.
