tail end of this system is over california on it and well offshore. continuing to press into the bay area tonight and tomorrow. to pinpoint these schuller's through the north bay. for the next couple of hours. widespread. we will time it out on futurecast but right now. kron4's charles clifford is pacifica --- he's tracking the conditions there. >> reporter: yes. it is raining all along the coast i am not far from the pacifica pier. just from the last 10 minutes it has been a light rain. earlier, it was nice. but perhaps in the last 30 minutes it has cooled off. i have been watching the radar images. it looks like that it is off

describe a situation where police or other first responders are sent on fake emergency calls. and the subsequent response is used to disrupt an organization.like a school.or to prank a person. swatting comes from the term swat - like swat team. multiple celebrities have been victims of swatting. a fake 9-1-1 call about a robbery at tom cruise's home. other hoax calls to the homes of justin bieber, ashton kutcher, the kardashian's.among others. now.california lawmakers are pushing for harsher punishments for people convicted making false police reports. >> now to another developing story tonght.seven marines are killed.seven others injured.during a training exercise in the mountains of nevada. it happened at the hawthorne army depot in hawthorne nevada.about 130 miles south-east of reno. this is a very rural, sparsely populated area. tonight.a major investigation is underway to figure out exactly what went so wrong.

a routine training exercise.turns deadly. military officials say marines were conducting live fire and maneuver training when a mortar round exploded. >> "we don't know yet what caused this malfunction, a team of investigators has begun the investigation to figure out just what happened." >> the injured were transferred to a medical center in reno. the military says the exercise was part of regular training required to maintain readiness. >> "we appreciate your support as we mourn the loss of these brave marines who gave their lives to defend the nation. we will remember their courage, and their sacrifice." >> from the senate floor, nevada's harry reid said marines all over the world are mourning the loss. >> "my thoughts are with those who were injured and of course the >> the accident happened late monday night. emergency officials say four medical helicopters were sent to transport patients to area hospitals. the white house says president obama was

immediately briefed on the incident. >> "the president's thoughts and prayers go to the families of those who were lost and to those who are injured. we're obviously in the early stages of assessing the incident. it's a tragedy, clearly." >> the army depot is used for storing ammunition and weapon stocks set to be deactivated. it's also used by military units for high desert trainingfore deployment overseas. the marines involved were based at camp lejeune, n.c. while the investigation continues, the military is holding off on using any of the mortars from the same manufacturing lot as the ones that were used at the nevada base. >> catherine: while not unexpected, a huge blow today for advocates of gun control. senate majority leader harry reid says a ban on assault weapons will not be a part of a gun control package he brings to the senate floor for debate. kron 4's dan kerman is here with what this means and why gun control advocates still have hope.

>> reporter: harry reid says there is just not enough support for this part of the gun control measure and that's why he will not bring it to the floor. but california senator dianne feinstein who authored the bill says she has been promised a vote and plans to introduce the assault weapons portion of the bill as an amendment. >> this is very important to me. i do not want to lay down and play dead. the american people has said it had every public pulled up the support this legislation is aimed to protect children, schools, shopping malls. to dry up the supplies of these over time. >> reporter: while the assault weapons portion of the package is in limbo, it. is. likely the senate will vote on three other measures. a ban on hi capacity ammunition clips, legislation calling for universal background checks, and stiffer penalties for gun trafficking. now it is those three measure, that make gun control advocates hopeful, though they remain

disappointed about the assault weapons part of the bill. more on that coming up tonight on kron 4 news at 6. >> catherine: more bay area news -- an accident closed all lanes on a connector ramp from i-80 to 101 in san francisco. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc7 news -- showing officers clearing the area. police say two cars collided and at some point the s-u-v flipped over. no word on what caused the accident the people in the cars suffered minor injuries. the lights are back on and traffic is flowing again along middle avenue in morgan hill. but this was the scene early this morning after a car hit a power pole near the intersection with murphy avenue. the pole was cut in half - leaving wires dangling over the road. at one point about a hundred p.g. and e customers lost power. traffic had to be re-routed around the mess until late this afternoon. the crash also disrupted phone service for a time.

kron4 looks back at one of the most divisive conflicts in american history. and we talk to a veteran who was there. the news at five continues next. a set-back for berkeley's world renowned chez panisse resturant. the damage from a fire two weeks ago turns out to be worse than first thought. kron4's maureen kelly talked to those in charge of rebuilding about what needs to be done. >> reporter: you can see the scaffolding that's up around the enclosed front porch of celebrity chef alice waters' restaurant. the ground floor is where the fire started and where the worst damage occurred and now the front 10 feet of the structure.both top and bottom needs to be demolished and completely rebuilt. we are going to take the whole structure down in the next three dayscomplicating matters.the codes are different from when the building was constructed back in 1971. >> we had to re-engineer it, this was built sort of hippie style, we have to use some steel i beams that we

east coast. look at this hail-storm in mississippi. you can hear it too. (pelting) >> this is in jackson mississippi. much of the state got pounded with hail - some of it the size of softballs. some cars had their windshields broken as a result. one car dealer said 250 of his cars were damaged. meanwhile the same storm system tore through georgia. you can see the remnants of a building in suburban atlanta. just shredded. officials are working to confirm a tornado is to blame. trees and power lines also came down. the storm is being blamed

for one death in polk county georgia.where a man in his truck was crushed by a tree. this is new england, this is mean. with 1 ft. of snowfall expected in portland. more snowfall expected tomorrow. and tomorrow is the first day of spring. it certainly does not feel like it. >> catherine: police say a former university of central florida student who committed suicide this week had planned a major attack on the campus. the evidence being found suggests he had planned very carefully.with a check-list and lots of weapons. >> catherine: police say 30- year-old james seevakumaran pulled a fire alarm, possibly to draw people out in the open. then. went back to his room to arm himself. where he pulled a gun on his roommate. the roommate ran into a bathroom and called 9-1-1. when police arrived they found the gunman dead. as they gathered evidence, they found a handgun, an

assault rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and a backpack with homemade bombs. they also found clues about what he was doing. >> "we found some notes and some writings that indicated that this was a planned attack. this individual had laid out a timeline and laid out some of what we feel were going to be his actions." students were evacuated from their dorm. some say they were left >> "the way they handled it was like, kinda disappointing. it started off as a fire alarm, and no one said that there was something else going on with the bomb and the shooting." >> catherine: authorities say in his timeline, seevakumaran had written he would, quote. "give them hell." luckily. it did not turn out as he planned. >> "it could have been a very bad day for everybody here. all things considered i think that we were very blessed here at the university of central florida."

(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> catherine: ten years to the day after the american invasion. iraq has yet to find peace. more than 60 iraqis died today as car bombs and i=e=d's exploded throughout shiite neighborhoods in baghdad. it's part of the rising tide of violence since the last american troops left nearly two years ago. grant lodes is here is here with a look back at one the most divisive conflicts in american history. >> yes and it is still divisive. check out this poll taken by cnn this week. about four out of ten americans think president bush was smart to invade iraq. six out of ten say it was a dumb idea. ten years have passed and

the country still cannot agree. march 20 2003: the u=s unleashes a shock and awe bombardment of baghdad. >> "on my orders, coalition forces have begun striking targets of military importance." >> reporter: within three weeks american ground troops are in the capital. saddam hussein's statue comes down. only 138 americans have died. and under a banner saying "mission accomplished," president bush declares. >> in the battle of iraq, the united states and its allies have prevailed. >> but the fighting goes on, even after saddam hussein is captured at the end of the year. the new year brings new violence. the battle for fallujah. the infamous abu ghraib pictures. the american death toll reaches 1=thousand by the end of 2004. 2=thousand by the end of 2005. nearly 3=thousand by the

end of 2006, when saddam hussein is executed. president bush orders more troops: five brigades with 20=thousand soldiers and marines. u=s casualties hit a record high, but the tactic works. violence subsides. 2008 and 2009 see a steep drop in the number of americans killed. and a new president is able to declare >> "the long war in iraq will come to an end >> but not soon enough for 4-thousand-5=hundred u-s service-members at least 2-thousand u-s government contractors and 174 journalists. >> catherine: almost ten years to the day since being deployed to iraq, a south bay war veteran shared some of his experiences with kron today. army sergeant 1st class graham gomez of san jose, served two tours of duty in iraq. he retired after 22 years of active duty. gomez arrived in iraq shortly after baghdad fell -- and spent the next 8 months working in intelligence, scouting troop movements and dodging roadside bombs. in an interview with kron 4's rob fladeboe, he shared

some of his memories from the front lines. >> our voices and intelligence analyst under general sanchez before he took over in iraq. the bombs were just starting. we were trying to get the bad guys and and uprise against their troops. >> reporter: to america to some good? >> i think. i think the world is better without some hussein >> reporter: do you feel like a your contribution was that america is grateful for what you did? >> everybody is grateful especially when you get

home also trying to remember the lives that were lost over there. >> catherine: sergeant gomez was also a part of operation desert storm. he was among the troops who chased saddam's elite republican guard out of kuwait. he would later serve in the military campaigns in somalia, kosovo and bosnia. >> a scary new development in syria's civil war -- the use of chemical weapons. at least 25 people died and dozens more were injured by shelling with chemical rockets" tuesday. the government and the rebels are both accusing each other of using them. the white house says the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated by the international community. >> i am not going to discuss intelligence but it is important that as fighting in syria intensifies and the regime becomes more desperate that the united states and the international community make very clear to assad that the use of chemical weapons would be totally unacceptable. the president was clear that if assad and those under his command made the mistake of using chemical weapons or failed to meet their obligations to secure them then there will be consequences and they will

be held accountable. >> catherine: the top u.s. military commander in europe says nato is making plans for possible military involvement in syria. >> jacqueline: the big weather story is the rainfall. showers all weekend and see rainfall from petaluma and novado. towards the peninsula some later showers here as well and the bay bridge with most of the rainfall is well offshore the satellite and writer pinpointing that and it is all around us and getting ready to move into the bay area. the tail end of this system is impacting us. we have an evening of rainfall and a morning and afternoon of rainshowers.
