continuing our coverage on this story, we want to show you exactly where the problematic bolts are located. kron 4' charles clifford has a closer look. this is a google earth look at the new eastern span of were looking at it from above treasure island. you can see the old bridge there in the background. two parts.. the skyway suspension tower section which is here. this part of the deck actually hangs from the tower. the bolts that we're talking about are located here. this tower is what's called pier e-2. it's located right where the skyway portion of the bridge meets the suspension tower section. now, if we move in a little closer you can see that there's actually a gap between the deck of the thank bridge and the top of the the support towers. in between are these devices, which are bearings and what are called shear keys. these devices are designed these are bolted to the towers by rods that run between 9 and 24 feet deep into the concrete. these are the bolts that are breaking. and another problem is that they are breaking inside the tower. and because the deck is in place, it's impossible to remove the bolts or to repair them.

you can see the old bridge there in the background. the new span is made up of two parts.. the skyway portion here and the suspension tower section which is here. this part of the deck actually hangs from the tower. the bolts that we're talking about are located here. this tower is what's called pier e-2. it's located right where the skyway portion of the bridge meets the suspension tower section. now, if we move in a little closer you can see that there's actually a gap between the deck of the bridge and the top of the the support towers. in between are these devices, which are bearings and what are called shear keys. these devices are designed these are bolted to the towers by rods that run between 9 and 24 feet deep into the concrete. these are the bolts that are breaking. and another problem is that they are breaking inside the tower. and because the deck is in place, it's impossible to remove the bolts or to repair them. there are a total of 288 anchor rods here, 32 have
