safety is going to override all-top priority for this bridge. if we can get to a safe decision responsibly, and make it to keep opening day then yes, we will do that. >>reporter: oakland mayor, jean quan made it very clear. her city wants plenty of notice of the new span does not open on time it. to many hotels, restaurants are relying on that business to celebrate the new opening of the span. also, i found out that there is a bridge wall, and the bike. those have now, possibly been cancelled. however, they expressed a lack of confidence that they can open the new stand by labor day weekend. reporting live from the bridge, justin waldman, kron 4 news.

continuing our coverage on this story, we want to show you exactly where the problematic bolts are located. kron 4' charles clifford has a closer look. this is a google earth look at the new eastern span of were looking at it from above treasure island. you can see the old bridge there in the background. two parts.. the skyway suspension tower section which is here. this part of the deck actually hangs from the tower. the bolts that we're talking about are located here. this tower is what's called pier e-2. it's located right where the skyway portion of the bridge meets the suspension tower section. now, if we move in a little closer you can see that there's actually a gap between the deck of the thank bridge and the top of the the support towers. in between are these devices, which are bearings and what are called shear keys. these devices are designed these are bolted to the towers by rods that run between 9 and 24 feet deep into the concrete. these are the bolts that are breaking. and another problem is that they are breaking inside the tower. and because the deck is in place, it's impossible to remove the bolts or to repair them.

there are a total of 288 anchor rods here, 32 have broken and caltrans is currently testing the rest of them. if the bolts can't be repaired, caltrans will have to find a new way to secure these joints to pier e-2. in the newsroom, charles clifford, kron 4 news. >> pam: more, with today's team coverage. today -- kron4's dan kerman got an up close, hands on look, at one of the bay >>reporter: and record and is the spokesperson for the new span of the bay bridge what is this? >> this is one of the 32 are rods that has broken on the bay bridge. the bulls however, are much larger, with 9 ft.-17 ft. the bolts

thank you for your time. where does everything stand right now? >> right now engineers are working to develop a solution for those broken rods. >> pam: is this a key issue impact the driving and also the earthquake? the sound issues of the seismic devices? >> this is not the safety concern for the driving it is only the seismic of the earthquake retrofitting. >> pam: we are talking that the new span is even safer than the current span? we understand that from an earlier report that the current span of the bridge is actually less safe than the new span is right now is that true? >> that is my understanding as well. because the new east span surpasses the

entire time to build a safe bridge for the public. that continues to be our focus to deliver a seismically safe bridge. >> pam: when would you know that the labor day bridge will be open? >> it is yet to be determined. it is premature. anything right now is speculation. as soon as we know what fixes have the 192 will pass the inspection and then will have a better sense. of the labor day opening. >> pam: mr. gordon, thank you. >> pam: thank you. >> thank-you, pam. continuing our coverage on this story, we want to show you exactly where the problematic bolts are located. kron 4' charles clifford has a closer look. this is a google earth look the lease at the new eastern span of the bay bridge as if you were looking at it from above treasure island.

you can see the old bridge there in the background. the new span is made up of two parts.. the skyway portion here and the suspension tower section which is here. this part of the deck actually hangs from the tower. the bolts that we're talking about are located here. this tower is what's called pier e-2. it's located right where the skyway portion of the bridge meets the suspension tower section. now, if we move in a little closer you can see that there's actually a gap between the deck of the bridge and the top of the the support towers. in between are these devices, which are bearings and what are called shear keys. these devices are designed these are bolted to the towers by rods that run between 9 and 24 feet deep into the concrete. these are the bolts that are breaking. and another problem is that they are breaking inside the tower. and because the deck is in place, it's impossible to remove the bolts or to repair them. there are a total of 288 anchor rods here, 32 have
