>> this morning amtrak investigators are trying to figure out what caused an amtrak train to derail in fremont last night. the train, carryng 200 passengers, was en route from los angeles to vancouver, canada. the front wheels of an engine went off the track about nine p- m. an amtrak spokesperson says the train was traveling very slowly and none of the 11 passenger cars derailed. the lead engine was removed and the train got moving again about just after midnight. no injuries were reported. >> authorities say speed was a factor in a deadly freeway crash near novato. it happened around 6-45 last night. the california highway patrol says this charred honda sedan was in the fast lane of northbound highway 101 near novato. after cutting across all four lanes of traffic to get onto eastbound highway 37. it crashed and burst into flames. >> it crossed two lanes where it traveled off the dirt and struck the bridge

on the ".on s.r. 37 overpass." >> investigators say the car flipped several times before landing in the ditch. then, the car and driver caught fire. eastbound 37 at 101 was shutdown for close to three hours afterwards. the chp says the driver was the only person in the crash - and that they won't be identified until the autopsy is completed. >> police are investigating a fiery crash that shut down highway one at bodega bay near the sonoma coast. it happened around 11 a-m saturday. the c-h-p says the driver of this, once red, ferrari lost control of the sports car and crashed into the trees the car burst into flames shortly after the crash. there were two occupants in the car. >> they were killed, pretty much, instantly. our only witness heard a loud noise and observed some smoke, ran up, called 911, some other vehicles came on scene. >> firefighters remained in the area for several hours to put out flare ups that

occurred and to make sure the fire did not spread to the nearby trees. officers go on to say it will take longer than usual to positivly identify the two people who were in the ferarri because their bodies were so badly burned. >> visitors to san francisco often put riding the famous cable cars at the top of their to-do list. some of those rides have proven to be dangerous. the city has shelled out nearly eight million dollars to settle about four dozen legal claims over the last 3 years. m-t-a spokesman paul rose says most of the settlements have been for minor injuries. >> " our top priority is safety and we were 5/month in 2011and now the numbers are 4/month. so they're going downin 2006 we had about 200 incidents in the system, and in the most recent year we've had about 103 so we're going down and making significant strides." >> rose says cable cars have the lowest number of injuries and collisions,

>> this woman is behind bars on kidnapping charges. san jose police say karla hernandez kidnapped a baby who was sitting in a car. it happened three weeks ago, just after six a-m. when the mother of the eleven month old briefly left her car to close her garage door. in that short time the suspect got in the car and sped away. police found the baby girl unharmed inside the abandoned car later that morning. investigators point to a combination of physical evidence, witnesses and a police sketch that helped identify hernandez as the suspect. >> san leandro police have arrested a man for leaving his two young children in the car. police say he left them at the marina square shopping

center on friday, in the car, with the windows rolled up. he told police that he was busy shopping. that's the second time this week san leandro police made such an arrest. on wednesday, in 80 degree temperatures, an oakland woman left her 4-month-old in a car at the same shopping center. police say leaving children unattended in vehicles exposes them to potential heat exhaustion and kidnapping. the charge is a misdemeanor but each could face jail time and a fine up to 2 thousand dollars. >> san jose is planning to fight a judge's ruling. that could open the emails of thousands of government employees to the public the city council has voted to appeal last month's ruling, which declared that employee messages about city business. are public records. even if, they were sent by a private device. open- government advocates say, it could plug a hole in california's public records act, which never envisioned modern technology and social media could bring greater transparency. >> the san francisco zoo has a brand new exhibit. and

>> reporter: kerry didn't give specifics on how china would move forward with north korea's threats. leaving it up to the chinese to address any plans in the days ahead. i'm cristina mutchler reporting for kron 4 news.. >> in peru, at least 33 people have been killed after a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a river. you're looking at photos taken of the scene yesterday. this happened some 600 miles north of the capital of lima. the bus was carrying more than 40 people when the driver apparently lost control. although the cause of the crash is not clear. the victims of the crash include three doctors, two nurses and several rural school teachers. police sergeant. they're said to resemble trayvon martin -- the unarmed teen who was shot to death last year. the targets show a silhouette of a person wearing a hoodie, holding a

can of arizona iced tea, and a bag of skittles. that's what martin was holding when he was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman. >> he offered one of our other officers our target. it was the silhouette of martin. the officer rejected. and he said that he should put them back into his car. >> the lawyer representing martin's family says, the sergeant's use of the target was "absolutely reprehensible." port canaveral is about 50 miles southeast of sanford, florida where martin was killed. >> procrastinators. your time is just about up. tomorrow is tax day -- the deadline for filing annual income taxes with the i-r-s. the agency says 97 million americans already submitted their tax forms by the first of this month. about 90 percent were done electronically, and the average refund is two- thousand, 755 dollars --

the rally was put together by organizing for action and their message was to take action. folks here were encouraged to do that by sending text messages to their senators that informs them of their support of legislation against gun violence as the gun control debate gets underway >> get a response if you have a phone or a smart phone! >> reporter: organizer's of saturday's event say they believe gun-control legislation will pass if enough people get involved >> there are common forms to prevent gun violence and 92 percent of people agree. this should not be a debate in congress if we all speak out we will see this as a necessary legislation. >> reporter: in mountain view daniel villareal kron four news >> a vigil is scheduled later this week for audrie pott. that's the saratoga teenager who committed suicide after she was sexually assaulted at a party last september. an explicit picture of 15 year old audrie was posted online showing the alleged assault. pott took her own life just days later.

after an investigation that took several months , sheriff's deputies arrested three 16 year old boys on thursday. authorities say the images posted online were key pieces of evidence that led to the arrests. meantime, the lawyers for the teen suspects. released this statement. "much of what has been reported over the last several days is inaccurate. most disturbing is the attempt to link audrie's suicide to the specific actions of these three boys. we are hopeful that everyone understands that these boys are to be regarded as innocent." >> the vigil for audrie pott is this friday night at 8pm at saratoga high school. audrie's parents have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow. >> the bay area coast guard rescued four people. after their tug boat sank while towing a barge off the coast of big sur. coast guard crews received the distress call at about three p-m and deployed a 47-foot motor life boat and a rescue helicopter from the monterey station. the rescue helicopter found the survivors on a raft and hoisted them aboard. all four were checked out a local hospital, but no injuries were reported.

>> a woman is behind bars on kidnapping charges. san jose police say karla hernandez kidnapped a baby who was sitting in a car. it happened three weeks ago, just after six a-m. when the mother of the eleven month old briefly left her car to close her garage door. in that short time the suspect got in the car and sped away. police found the baby girl unharmed inside the abandoned car later that morning. investigators point to a combination of physical evidence, witnesses and a police sketch that helped identify hernandez as the suspect. >> san leandro police have arrested a man for leaving his two young children in the car. police say he left them at the marina square shopping center on friday, in the car, with the windows rolled up. he told police that he was busy shopping. that's the second time this week san leandro police made such an arrest. on wednesday, in 80 degree temperatures, an oakland woman left her 4-month-old in a car at the same shopping center. police say leaving children unattended in vehicles exposes them to potential

>> in peru, at least 33 people have been killed after a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a river. you're looking at photos taken of the scene yesterday. this happened some 600 miles north of the capital of lima. the bus was carrying more than 40 people when the driver apparently lost control. although the cause of the crash is not clear. the victims of the crash include three doctors, two nurses and several rural school teachers. >> a police sergeant in florida has been fired for allegedly having shooting targets that resemble trayvon martin. investigators say targets similar to these were handed out by a port canaveral police sergeant. they're said to resemble trayvon martin -- the unarmed teen who was shot to death last year. the targets show a silhouette of a person wearing a hoodie, holding a can of arizona iced tea, and a bag of skittles. that's what martin was holding when he was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman.

to the arrests. meantime, the lawyers for the teen suspects. released this statement. "much of what has been reported over the last several days is inaccurate. most disturbing is the attempt to link audrie's suicide to the specific actions of these three boys. we are hopeful that everyone understands that these boys are to be regarded as innocent." the vigil for audrie pott is this friday night at 8pm at saratoga high school. audrie's parents have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow. >> the bay area coast guard rescued four people. after their tug boat sank while towing a barge off the coast of big sur. coast guard crews received the distress call at about three p-m and deployed a 47-foot motor life boat and a rescue helicopter from the monterey station. the rescue helicopter found the survivors on a raft and hoisted them aboard. all four were checked out a local hospital, but no injuries were reported. various federal departments were contacted in case of a potential oil or fuel spill caused by the incident.

a major story that broke on our weekend newscast, beginning with the tragic oakland hills fire in 1991. our cameras trained on that spiraling smoke that soon turned into a deadly conflagration, and one of the major stories of the decade. marty and i were here for the columbia shuttle disaster in february of 2003 when it exploded on re- entry in texas killing all 7 aboard. we were in the mission for mardi gras, and the foot of the embarcadero for bay to breakers. from san jose to santa rosa, from san francisco to oakland, and beyond, we have reflected your stories, and that has remained an important reason why i stayed in this chair so long. for me this has been a great, rewarding and challenging run as a member of the broadcast industry for 42 years now. kron has been my home for almost half that time, and this chair, this weekend, these hours, have been a special place for almost all that time. i've spent 35 of my 42 years in the bay area. i've watched television news

evolve through 4 decades of technological evolution from film to tape, and live shots to the twitter verse. i was here when cbs field tested the first such live- shot outside the hearst mansion in hillsborough following the kidnapping of randy hearst's daughter patricia, one of the biggest global stories of the 70's. this story also earned me my first emmy. that era of technology gave us the video cam and large format video tape, then in varying sizes as the cameras and the batteries got smaller, and then we went digital. the mid 90s saw an interesting journalistic shift, as newsrooms which blossomed large in the 80's, started to reduce staff with the continued reinvention of smaller handheld cameras, and the introduction of a new tool called the internet, then facebook and twitter. in the mid 90's when the weekend morning news first started giving our viewers links to url's, i thought us somewhat elitist, as the majority of households were yet to connect to the internet. now we are 24/7 interconnected world, watching and reporting revolutions via twitter.

i have appreciated all the opportunities to engage in this craft called journalism, and have benefitted from all the challenges i have faced in doing so. i leave satisfied that i have done my darndest to make a difference, but always recognize, there is more that can be done. and though i came from the ranks of a the few women in the media over 4 decades ago who broke the barriers for women and women of color, there is still an ongoing battle to prove that the content of our character, the importance of our intelligence rather then our looks is key in this job. i must set straight one long held belief.that marty and i not.. tell people, yes we are, for not married 5 hours on the weekend. and then we go home.in different directions. but as seatmates here for 17 years, as competitors.as journalists who respect each otherwe have been a good team. but all good things must come to an end. for me, its time to go. for marty, and the rest of
