we're live in san francisco. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm marty gonzalez. we'll have more on our top stories in a moment. first, let's get a quick check of your forecast with janu arasu. >> we're following the latest from boston. and this new video showing suspect dzhokar tsarnaev hiding in a boat in watertown, massachusetts. that's an infrared image of him there. right now, the 19 year old can't speak because of his injuries. he has a wound in his neck. stacey cohan has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: a five-day nightmare for the entire boston area concluded friday night as 19-year-old dzhokar tsarnaev was found and captured -- from his hiding place -- a boat in the backyard of a watertown home. >> we had a couple thousand police officers on scene, the turn out was just incredible. >> reporter: police launched a massive manhunt late thursday -- chasing dzhokar and his brother tamerlan

tsarnaev -- who later died in a shootout with police. saturday, the suspect's uncle urged his nephew be honest and tell authorites everything >> i'm relieved that he's alive first of all that there's now a chance to find out who was behind it. second of all i stress that there is a chance for dzhokar to seek forgiveness. >> reporter: on saturday governor deval patrick spoke to reporters saying tsarnaev is not yet able to communicate -- but hopes the young man will soon be able to answer the question of why >> i and i think all the law enforcement professionals are hoping for a host of reasons that the suspect survives because we have a million questions. those questions need to be answered. a justice dept source says dzhokar will will face federal terrorism charges and may also face state murder charges -- adding that he could be charged before he leaves the hospital. in boston i'm stacey cohan reporting. >> federal agents confirm that the f-b-i interviewed the older brother, tamerlan tsarnaev in 2011, after being tipped off by a foreign government. the suspect identified himself as ethnic chechen from southern russia and officials there believed tamerlan was going to travel to the country's region to join unspecified

underground groups. the fbi says it interviewed tsarnaev and relatives, and did not find any domestic or foreign terrorism activity. meanwhile, tsarnaev's uncle says he had a falling-out with the 26-year-old over his increased commitment to islam. boston cardinal sean o'malley is dedicating mass today to the bombing victims. it's being held at the city's holy cross cathedral, where president obama attended a ceremony earlier this week. cardinal o'malley also plans to celebrate the tragedy's first responders. afterwards, parishioners will gather for a victims' memorial near the marathon finish line. a solemn salute in boston for murdered m-i-t police officer sean collier. people joined many of boston's finest last night for funeral services for the 26-year-old. police say he was gunned down by the suspected bombing suspects while sitting in his patrol car.. collier grew up about 20 miles north of boston in wilmington, massachusetts. in january 2012, he joined the m-i-t police force with its nearly 60 officers. people also held a candlelight vigil last night in his hometown, remembering officer collier and all the victims. >> thousands of runners are lacing up their shoes. to take part in the annual 'presido 10' run. it's just about to begin. kron 4's mike pelton is live at chrissy field.

>> we are back. prince harry made an appearance at the london marathon this morning. before the marathon began, runners paused to remember boston. many of the runners are wearing black ribbons. its a show of solidarity for those who were killed or injured by monday's bombings at the boston marathon. for every runner who finishes the london marathon, organizers say they will donate three dollars to a fund to help the boston victims. >> and the governor of massachusetts, deval patrick, is reaching out to everyone effected by the terror attack. he wants the victims to know them. >> we, as boston and as a commonwealth community will rebound, rebuilt. for some of the people that were hit

and impacted the most. i imagine, i think that it is important that we are here for them. we will be here in respect. and for some of the immediate see of this has passed. ."a long time" >> the governor spoke outside of fenway park after attending a pre-game ceremony. and red sox fans got a sweet surprise at the game last night. ♪ 1."so good so good so good" neil diamond surprised fans and sang 'sweet caroline' which has been a fenway park favorite since 2002. there was a pre-game ceremony honoring the victims and survivors of the bombings. red sox designated hitter david ortiz took part in the pre-game ceremony. showing pride for his city.

shore. pleasanton. downtown mid-70s. and if you're going to go to the local beaches? 82 degrees and a warmer 86 degrees in napa. your kron 4 7 day around the bay plenty of '90s. tomorrow and a gradual cooling has received but it is still going to be nice with mid '80s on tuesday. we will still see mid '80s. >> some residents of indiana are cleaning up this weekend after rain flooded many counties. rescuers had to save those trapped by floodwaters. flooding also shut down roads and officials declared disaster emergencies. indiana governor mike pence toured some of the worst areas yesterday. some flood victims are returning home today after taking shelter at a red cross center in kokomo. >> officials say that the

area affected by the fertilizer plant explosion in west, texas is safe. city council member steve vanek says that the first wave of residents should have been allowed to move back in yesterday. however they will be under a curfew for the time being. the west fertilizer company exploded on wednesday -- killing fourteen people and injuring dozens more. portions of the town were leveled and dozens of homes were damaged. authorities began inspecting the area on friday. council member vanek has re- assuring words for his community. >> everything is safe. any rumors you have heard today, forget about it. it is good. we are trying to get people back in and i want to encourage that everything is." safe, safe, and safe". >> it's been three years since the 2010 b-p oil spill in the gulf. and the legal batttle continues. florida's attorney general filed a 40-page lawsuit on saturday in federal court against b-p and halliburton. it comes one day after mississippi officials filed a spill related lawsuit before the three-year

statute of limitations expires. florida's lawsuit focuses on the state's economic losses. it argues that the 2010 spill cost the state a variety of tax revenues. the state also seeks punitive damages. (chaos) >> thousands of people in denver, colorado yesterday seen scattering after gunshots rang out during a 4-20 celebration. this is the first time the state has hosted such an event since it legalized marijuana. a man and women were shot but are expected to survive. the man's dog was also shot. police are now looking for suspects. witnesses describe the scene as a jovial quickly turned to panic once the shots rang out. >> the federal defense of marriage act is being challenged by a lesbian couple in los angeles. one member of the couple is from the philippines, and she's facing deportation. she can't obtain residency because the u-s government doesn't recognize her marriage. the judge says current law

long. it was a drama that played out on every possible platform imaginable. on monday, youtube videos were uploaded shortly after the bombing. this was a big asset to detectives who were just beginning their investigation. twitter was essential with getting the word out about the bombing but also helped people reconnect with loved ones after the explosions. internet sleuths were hard at work enhancing video and still images and uploading themagain, playing a key roll in helping police figure out who the bombers were. then, on thursday, when the fbi released the photos of the bombing suspects those images were shared across all platforms of social media. at the same time, police were looking into the youtube and twitter accounts of the bombing suspects to get some insight about possible motivations. the drama intensified on the computer screen early friday morning when the first suspect was killed and people were glued to twitter and facebook right up until the second suspect was caught. the boston police made the announcement of his arrest

on twitter. but, social media is not always a good thing. early in the investigation, two innocent people's photos were distributed across the internet.claiming they were the bombing suspects. i'm jeff bush in the newsroom, kron four news. >> so as you have seen, social media's been playing an increasing role in crisis situations. now, the city of san francisco is partnering with a design firm to create a disaster response app. the app, called "s-f-72", helps connect people with first aid skills and supplies to people who need them. people can pre-register their homes, and supplies like emergency generators. city officials say it's going to be integrated with existing social networks like facebook and twitter. all you'll have to do when you need it, is log on. >> cue up another round of apologies for chris culliver. because the san francisco 49ers player is in trouble again over a new set of offensive comments. this time, he went after women. culliver went to sensitivity

>> he can't speak yet , but authorities in massachusetts have a lot of questions for 19 year old marathon bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev. he is in serious condition at the hospital with injuries to his neck. so he's unable to speak. and as susan candiotti explains, tsarnaev remains under heavy guard. >> reporter: even if suspect dzhokar tsarnaev wanted to co-operate with the fbi, he couldn't. sources tell cnn because of injuries to his throat, the 19 year old suspected terrorist bomber cannot talk yet. he's intubated and sedated. >> all the law enforcement professionals are hoping for a host of reasons that the suspect survives because we have a million questions. those questions need to be answered. >> reporter: in this photograph taken right after his arrest, the college student's neck area appears covered with blood. the younger brother's escape

was busted when a man found him hiding in his backyard boat. a series of thermal images taken by a state police helicopter shows a white image of an object projecting heat. in another still photo, you can make out the suspect's feet in black lying in the boat. a robotic arm moves in and lifts the tarp. watertown police chief told cnn's wolf blitzer about those dramatic moments. >> "we could tell he was alive and moving and began negotiations that way and over a long period of time we were able to get him to surrender. >> reporter: agents yell to him to give himself up. >> you will not be harmed.we know you're bleeding. we >> reporter: police say there was an exchange of gunfire. authorities have said his injuries mainly came during thursday night's shootout when his brother was killed. fbi agents spent the day saturday combing over every inch of the boat, collecting blood, hair, signs of explosives and more to build a case

against the suspected boston marathon bomber. susan candiotti. watertown, massachusetts. >> authorities continue to dig into the accused boston bomber's past. some are now connecting them to the islamic community. muslim leaders have condemned the attack and say the bombing's have created a tense environment for many american muslims. while authorities have not released any information linking the alleged attack to religion, american muslims fear that the minds of some are already made up. >> it is a unique thing being a minority within the united states. it is not often like a when a white christian blows something up. and it is a fine line, there is a feeling of dread we're hoping they're not muslim. however, in the bay area we have some reports of hate incidents. fortunately,

>> richmond police are looking for two men involved in a shooting. it happened around eight last night on griffin drive near san pablo. one man was sent to the hospital. physical description of thebut police say they were u-v after the shooting. and that they appear to have specifically targeted the victim. >> curtains are coming down on the iconic "dome" theater in scheduled to close today. formally known as cine-arts theater, it's been part of the east-bay community since 19-67. but back in december the city approved developers' plans to replace it with a sporting goods store. a local group is challenging the city's decision. they're hoping the structure won't be demolished before their appeal hearing on may 6th. city councilmembers are also discussing anticipated legal challenges to the demolition tomorrow in closed session.

>> coinciding with earth day. san mateo county's plastic bag ban starts tomorrow. researchers say plastic breaks down into particles that seep into the soil and water supply. so supervisors enacted the ban to help the environment. it affects all retail outlets and grocery stores in more than 20 cities throughout the county. retailers will charge ten- cents a piece for paper bags. but you can avoid that fee by grabbing a re-usable bag. and today, target is giving away more than one million reusable bags nationwide in honor of earth day. earth day is tomorrow. but this weekend, several bay area communities are pitching in to do their part to help out mother nature. kron four's jeff pierce went to one earth day event in the east bay. >> i'm mother nature. you're mother nature? yes i am it's >> reporter: and mother nature along with earthday was observed

>> thousands of people in denver, colorado yesterday seen scattering after gunshots rang out during a 4-20 celebration. this is the first time the state has hosted such an event since it legalized marijuana. a man and women were shot but are expected to survive. the man's dog was also shot. police are now looking for suspects. witnesses describe the scene as a jovial quickly turned to panic once the shots rang out. the federal defense of marriage act is being challenged by a lesbian couple in los angeles. one member of the couple is from the philippines, and she's facing deportation. she can't obtain residency because the u-s government doesn't recognize her marriage. the judge says current law violates the woman's rights. so he's allowing a class- action lawsuit. it's one of several challenges being brought against federal marriage laws. >> the boy scouts of america is considering a change in it's sexual orientation policy. mikayla lewis gets reactions on the scouts maintaining a members. i, deven promise to do my best to do my duty to god and my country.

>> social media played a big role in the boston bombing kron four's jeff bush helped and hurt the flow of information. >> reporter: the entire country was focused on the events in boston all week long. it was every possible platform imaginable. on monday, youtube videos were uploaded shortly after the bombing. this was a big asset to detectives who were just beginning their investigation. twitter was essential with getting the word out about the bombing but also helped people reconnect with loved ones after the explosions. internet sleuths were hard at work enhancing video and still images and uploading themagain, playing a key roll in helping police figure out who the bombers were. then, on thursday, when the fbi released the photos of the bombing suspects those images were shared across all platforms of social media. at the same time, police were looking into the youtube and twitter accounts of the bombing suspects to get some insight

a shooting. hunters point, in san francisco, there was one man shot. and there's no word on any arrest. and richmond police are looking for two men involved in a shooting. it happened around eight last night on griffin drive near san pablo. one man was sent to the hospital. police haven't relased a -- released.. physical description of the suspects. but police say they were seen getting into a white s- u-v after the shooting. and that they appear to have specifically targeted the victim. also, the rock ridge neighborhood he was shot near college ave when they were approached with a person with a gun. and the person left running with nothing and to the shooter had not been available.
