yesterday -- scorching an estimated 28-thousand acres. the fire is burning in ventura county -- about 50 miles northwest of los angeles. it is currently only 20 percent contained. a handful of firefighters from around the bay area headed to southern california to help battle the blaze. at this point, the fire is threatening more than four- thousand homes. firefighters have the upper hand on a blaze in glendale. the fire temporarily shut down a freeway and forced evacuations. it broke out north of the glendale freeway just after two yesterday afternoon and quickly spread across the freeway and uphill. the brush fire prompted evacuations of many nearby homes. schools and businesses. firefighters credit water- dropping helicopters for helping them get the upper hand on the flames. and fire problems in the south bay. it took them nearly two hours, but firefighters contained a large brush fire in a field near the eastridge shopping center in san jose. the blaze was reported friday evening near quimby

road and the east capitol expressway. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc 7 news. you can see the dense smoke, but mall officials say they were told the fire did not pose a threat to the shopping center. and evacuations were not necessarry. but fire officials say this around dry brush in warm conditions. the fire got uncomfortably close to some buildings. but the fire department says no structures were damaged. firefighters had a controled burn of about 30 acres of this empty field. the fire department says its response could have been faster with more staff. about 60 san jose firefighters responded along with cal fire and one chopper. and a red flag warning is in effect for the north bay

hills. it was released at midnight and will be in effect through 3 this afternoon. an unusual health scare in the bay area. health officials in san public that a case of typhoid fever has been reported involving a food handler at the stonestown mall. explains how the case was eaten there recently. the san francisco health department was alerted to the case by a doctor who treated an employee who works here at the nordstrom café. health department officials say people who ate at the café last month might have come in contact with the bug. dr. susan phillip san francisco health dept. if they ate on the days of april 16, 17, 18, 20 or there may have been a potential exposure. the department says the worker contracted the cureable disease while traveling out of the country. people should know that if they are traveling outside

the students of sandy hook need a permanent school. so far, though, the task force responsible for finding a site for the plan. but there are more options location of sandy hook elementary. consolidating into an intermediate school was discussed. that plan would spare the district the cost of building a brand new school. police say the morgan hill daycare teacher accused of putting sleeping pills in children's "sippy cups" at a childcare center is admitting to the crime. 59-year-old deborah gratz, of hollister, has pleaded "no contest" to dosing at least five toddlers' sippy cups, with the over- the- counter sleep aid - the children sleep longer during naptime. a fellow teacher saw gratz putting pills into the children's water cups. those cups were confiscated before any children could drink from them. but an investigation continues into other potential instances. gratz was fired from her job at the kiddie academy arrest earlier this month. july.

we continue to track the wild fires in the region. officials said that this brings the fire in ventura county have tripled in size is just yesterday, scourging an estimated 28,000 a.. the fire is burning in ventura county about 50 mi. north of los angeles. it is currently only 30 percent contained. a handful firefighters from all around the bay area had to southern california to help battle the blaze. at this point, the fire is spreading more than 4000 homes. >> firefighters have the upper hand on a blaze in glendale. the fire temporarily shut down a freeway and foresee back relations. it broke out north of the glendale freeway just after 2 yesterday afternoon and quickly spread across the freeway and appeal. the brush fire prompted evacuations in many nearby homes, schools and businesses. >> fire problems in the
