the truck and the load he was carrying was about four feet wider than the actual bridge on the right side. i kept saying, any time he wants to move over to the left it'd be okay. we started slowing down. about that same time another semi- truck came up on the left side and it almost looked like he pinned that truck over to where he couldn't swerve to get over. he hit the bridge, about 3 or 4 feet wider than the actual bridge was and there was a big puff of dust." this time lapse video shows the white truck as it crosses the bridge. here is where it it the girder. the bridge fell moments later. dan sligh had no time to react. >>"when the dust hit i saw the bridge start to fall at that point forward momentum just carried us right over. as you saw the water approaching, it was just one of those you hold on to things as tight as you can, just a white flash and cold water. skagit is definitely cold at this time of the year." the truck was half in the water. sligh had dislocated his shoulder. >>"i couldn't see my wife in the passenger seat. i asked her if she was okay. she wasn't responding. popped my shoulder back in so i could unbuckle everything and get over to her. unbuckled her, pulled her over to my side, which has less water because it was

filling up about belly deep inside the truck. i managed to get the driver side door somewhat open, to where i could step out onto the side rails of the truck and keep her out of the a 20 year old man was the only other victim. he managed to climb onto the roof of his car. amazingly, none of them suffered any serious injuries. another surprising part of the story: how little it took to bring down the bridge. this is the truck that hit the bridge. the only visible damage, this little ding. >>pam:here in the bay area, repair work is underway to fix the broken bolts on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. kron 4 crews were on the new span yesterday and got a firsthand look at how repairs are going. here is a closer look at crews working to fix the bolts. these photos were just taken yesterday. drilling under the new span has just begun to fix the dozens of broken bolts. caltrans says the bolts are no longer useful -- so they are building a steel saddle

to hold the bridge down the same way the bolts would. a meeting next wednesday will reveal the progress crews have made -- and if the new span will make its labor day opening debut. firefighters in the east bay, have now gotten a handle on a grass fire, that at one point threatened several homes. kron4's j-r stone is live at the scene in hercules, j- r? >> >>j.r.: in the distance you can see it i 80. this is where the two roads meet. you can see the black grass here and then i want to come up to the hill because that is exactly what the fire did. you can see what it did to these homes. here in this situation, burned that deck to the ground. i want to go to some of the video because

you think it's more of what it looked like an hercules this afternoon. on the right side of your screen, you're looking at the white to smoke going up into the air. this is what people in the area saw. lots of smoke. then, on the left side you could see what it looks like on the ground. at the ground right now is extremely dry. as for the cause of this, it is still on a clear but those who live in this area say those with caltrans were cutting across the roadway and a short time later they saw flames. i talked with the gentleman who lived in this house. you will hear what he has to say to this and what he found after this fire in my 6:00 story. live in hercules, it j.r. stone, kron 4 news.

" to chile. saturday, mild. a better chance of showers on memorial day. more details on that when i come back. >>grant:it's the largest quake in the state since 2008. the moderate size greenville in centered just plumas county.about 150 miles northeast of sacramento. the quake hit at 8:47 las night and was felt in three states.into oregon.nevada.and as far south as san francisco. more than four dozen after- shocks followed. the largest aftershock.a 4.9 magnitude. 600 customers lost power. a water main broke in the area.

no injuries reported, but a handful of homes in the area suffered moderate damage. check it out: this kitchen lost lots of items from the cabinets. glasses.some of them broken. salt, cooking oil. glass decorations fell off a display shelf. and this rear windshield was shattered during the earthquake. you also had a noticable crack in this wall. fairly long crack. the homeowner here called it quite a shaker. and picture from the wall toppled to the floor. we also got a still photo emailed to us from a home in almanor. about 40 miles west of the quake. broken dishes here as well. experts say small aftershocks will likely continue for a week or so. >>pam:shaking from the greenville quake was also felt in and around nearby lassen national park, where the most recent volcano erupted back in 1915, according to

because there are no case studies on the subject in that area. no charges will be filed against a woman accused of placing rubbing alcohol into bottles of orange juice at a starbucks in his san jose. police arrested a woman last month on suspicion of attempted murder. however, test results and now show, the liquid involved with vinegar in not alcohol. prosecutors determine they cannot rule out that vinegar and the jews might have occurred naturally. the district attorney's office says they don't have enough evidence to prove that she committed a crime. ♪

chance for a light rain. and remember you've watched the forecast on our 247 news channel comcast 193. >>pam:just in time for summer -- yosemite's half dome is open for business! the final metal cables were put into place late thursday. the cable route will allow hikers to scale the granite rock safely. in recent years -- park officials began requiring hikers to have passes to hike the popular summit. they wanted to limit the numbers of hikers on half dome for safety. three disney parks will be open 24 hours straight today to kick off the summer. the magic kingdom in florida, along with disneyland and disney's california adventure park. will stay open from 6 a-m today to 6 a-m saturday morning. tens of thousands of people are expected to attend. disney did something similar last year to celebrate leap year.

>>pam:the bridge collapse in washington brought back but there are a lot more in the u-s that we didn't hear about because they were not in the bay area. with a video timeline of other recent collapses, kron-4's catherine heenan is catherine? >>catherine:there's a disturbingly long the u-s. some of them - with moderate damage. some -- a huge wreck. one collapse happened in january of last year in kentucky. this was the scene after a cargo ship hit a western kentucky bridge over the tennessee river. you can see parts of the bridge - clinging to the as bad as it looks - no one was injured. a 322-foot section of the bridge fell into the river. back in the bay area. a lot of people of course remember the 2007 macarthur maze collapse. a tanker truck crashed and exploded.

the heat was so intense.the fire softened huge sections one person was injured. crews scrambled to get the macarthur maze repaired.it was back in use in 26 days. a particularly deadly bridge collapse happened in this was described as 'total bridge failure". the n-t-s-b later said that there were undersized plates on this bridge. and too much weight -- partly from construction supplies and equipment. this was the 1-35 bridge over the mississippi river. it collapsed in august of 2007. killing 13 people and injuring 145 others. and of course. the bridge collapse that was around the world. the bay bridge - during the loma prieta quake in 1989. earthquake. one person was killed.as opposed to many more in other spots. but the scene at the bay

bridge became an iconic image of the 89 quake. what happened in washington state has people reviewing failure in the u-s. among the most common - ships running into them.as in kentucky. like the problem in >>pam:coming up on the kron- 4 news at eight. we'll show you exactly where the bridge collapsed in skagit county in washington, and detail how it all happened. in bay area news. while the bay bridge has had its share of problems, there's another project that is not far from completion. the fourth bore of the caldecott tunnel is still on schedule to open this fall. what's still to come is extending the road out to the highway. the new tunnel will allow four lanes to go full-time in each direction -- helping drivers going against traffic and should help to ease traffic times on weekends. tonight fire officials in contra costa county confirm that caltrans workers are to blame for an afternoon

grass fire that threatened homes. they say it was accidentally started. no homes caught kron 4's j.r. stone is following the story and what went wrong. >>j.r.: pamela the fire chief tells me that those workers were actually mowing this section right here. you see that long grass and that's when they hit aichpark ad sent this whole hill up in flames. the flames came this way. they took out the deck. i talk to the owner of this home. this is what he had to say. >> this was an actual deck. it is to fire took it shares with the deck. we used to barbeque appear in kids would come and play. we were both at work and it got a call from our neighbor that the neighborhood was on fire. i am very thankful.

stone, kron4 >>pam: was bittersweet for students at los lomas high school in walnut creek when a popular student died suddenly of a brain aneurysm while working out at a local gym. amir khakimov was a standout team and known for all of los lomas has been in mourning this whole week. it's been very rough. amir, he was such a great person and he did not deserve this. it's difficult, it's even difficult for adults to wrap their minds around this because he was a healthy young adult in really good shape, he was working out in really good shape so he was doing everything we tell young people to do. >>pam:amir's family moved to this country from uzbekistan two children could have a better life. he was eighteen years old.

califonria. it's the largest quake in the state since 2008. >>grant:the moderate size earthquake was centered just west of greenville in plumas county.about 150 miles northeast of sacramento. the quake hit at 8:47 las night and was felt in three states.into oregon.nevada.and as far south as san francisco. damage. more than four dozen after- shocks followed. the largest aftershock.a 4.9 magnitude. 600 customers lost power. a water main broke in the area. no injuries reported, but a handful of homes in the area suffered moderate. check it out: this kitchen lost lots of items from the cabinets. a plate. glasses.some of them broken.

almanor just to the northwest of the town of greenville. the earthquake, which was about 7 miles below the surface, didn't do any major damage, but it did cause some minor problems. to the west along highway 89 caltrans had to clear a small rock slide off the road. a little further away in platteville, about 600 people lost power for a few hours. and to the north...here on what's called the lake almanor peninsula.. the quake broke a water main. the break drained this tank which supplies water to about 1500 people in the area. that damage was repaired by friday morning. and finally, since the big quake on thursday evening there have been dozens of smaller aftershocks in the area. each one of these orange dots is a quake that's been detected by the usgs. the largest aftershock so far was a 4.9 around 1am friday morning. in the newsroom, charles clifford kron 4 news. >> anny: here's a live look at our cameras from our studios. lots of sunshine.

rob fladeboe shows you one part of town where the graffiti vandals appear to be winning that battle. >>rob:in what seems to be an on-going game of cat and mouse, the mouse is winning. this crew was busy friday stringing more razor wire to block access to a railroad trestle over highway 101 which had recently been given a new coat of paint to cover unsightly graffiti, but as you can see, there's already a new tag. they're trying to stop what just happened to another trestle a half-mile north, near 13th street. a week ago monday, the trestle looked like this, covered in graffiti, from one end to the other, inside and out. the next day, it looked like this, painted over and secured with extra razord wire and new fencing. but where there's a will, there's a way. through hard to find holes in the fence, like this one, the graffiti vandals returned, and once again,
