the supreme court did not make a broad ruling that would have a far more wide ranging impact in the country. people who wanted prop a overturned was certainly happy today. >> catherine: this was the scene this morning on the steps of the supreme court. people running to get notes from inside the court -- to spread the ews to those waiting outside. people in anticipation of a prop 8 ruling.the decision was a long time coming. here's a timeline of how everything happened. >> catherine: in 2004, then- san francisco mayor gavin newsom began issuing same- sex marriage licenses. the next day, critics filed suit to stop newsom and the county clerk from issuing more licenses. litigation ended with the case reaching the state

supreme court. in august of that year, the court ruled that newsom and county clerks did not have the authority to issue those licenses -- saying they should be ruled invalid. >> catherine: an appeal reversed the decision -- saying california's marriage laws violate the state's equal protection clause by discriminating on the basis of gender. >> catherine: but the fight wasn't over. in october of 2006, another setback, as the california court of appeals upheld the marriage law's constitutionality. over a year and a half later, the state supreme court ruled the marriage laws violated the rights of couples to privacy, liberty and equal protection. no licenses could be issued.. >>then june 3rd of 2008, proposition 8 -- an amendment to ban same-sex

marriage -- made the november ballot, and it passed with 52% of the vote. and in may of 2009, the state court of appeals voted to uphold prop 8 as a valid addition to the state constitution. >> catherine: more litigation between the city, the county and the state lasted into 2010. when the u.s district court ruled that prop 8 violated the 14th amendment. then last february, the ninth circuit court panel affirmed that ruling. >> catherine: appealed to the u.s. supreme court. today - the court ruling that those prop 8 supporters had no legal standing to bring the case. a momentous day in the bay area, and after the ruling was announced -- local and state officials had a chance to talk about what happened, and what it means to the pelosi on prop 8 ruling-sot >> as long as we early in the right direction. that is what matters. for those that are in between, still believed in equality but not
