a historic day for the supreme court as they struck down prop 8 and the defense of marriage act. this prop 8 decision is the ruling that most legal experts predicted. the supreme court cleared the way for same sex marriage to resume in california in a 5 to 4 decision. the majority of the justices said that supporters of prop 8 did not have the right to appeal a lower courts ruling. they also said the majority of prop 8 supporters were not able to show how they were harmed by same sex marriage. this means gay marriage is expected to resume in california in 25 days. the supreme court did not make a broad ruling about whether banning same sex marriage is constitutional. that could have had a more wide ranging impact across the country. there was a huge turnout for the celebration in san francisco's castro district last night. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc 7 news.

the rally was organized by a coalition advocacy groups including "marriage equality usa, "march-4- equality", and "unite here local 2" kron 4 caught up with supporters of same sex marriage who say the overturn of prop 8 is a breath of fresh air after so many years of struggle. same-sex marriage supporters also gathering in oakland for a block party to celebrate the u-s supreme opinions on same- sex marriage. hundreds showed up on telegraph avenue at 19th near the art sculpture park to listen to music. a woman legally licensed to perform marriage ceremonies was on hand. she married at least five couples, although the marriages were symbolic and are not yet legally binding. people who have been a part of the fight for marriage equality say this day has been a long time coming. the block party continued through eight o'clock in the evening. then after- parties in oakland followed. supporters of the prop 8 ban did not protest the event. in other big bay area news.

he was elected that nation's first black president in 1994. he has been battling a recurring lung infection for a long while. aaron hernandez has become a former member of the new england patriots after becoming a guest of the massachusetts penal system. hernandez pleaded not guilty after being arrested and charged with murder in the in the shooting death of odin lloyd, a semi-pro football player whose body was found about a mile from hernandez's home. prosecutors say lloyd had angered hernandez at a nightclub a few days earlier by talking to the wrong people. authorities say hernandez drove lloyd to a secluded gravel road before shooting him multiple times. the patriots released the tight end less than two hours after his arrest and before he was charged. hernandez could get life in prison without parole if convicted. a florida businessman who says he was held hostage by his own workers in china has been freed. chip starnes, co-founder and president of specialty medical supplies china, says he'd been unable to leave the company's beijing factory since friday.

congress who oppose same- sex marriage lashed out at the high court on religious grounds. the rulings only affect those states that have legalized same-sex marriage. that means the 35 states where such unions are still illegal will see no change. this weekend -- the gay pride celebration in the country is happening in san francisco. this is video from last year's festivities. large crowds are expected to come out and celebrate. the two-day celebration will take place at san

and 90s are to fill an entire afternoon highs. a gorgeous day with plenty of sunshine to go around, but again temperatures will be back in the '60s and '70s, by 8:00 p.m. tonight. breaking down afternoon highs, plenty of eighties in the south bay, san jose climbing to three looks like walnut creek check-in and at 80 degrees. downtown san francisco with an afternoon high of 72 degrees and upper '70's for east bay shoreline. in terms of your extended forecast, 7 day around the bay will continue to gradually warmed things up. monday is expected to be the warmest day of the week. temperatures could reach triple digits. at least six consecutive days of excessive heat for the inland spot. at national weather service is discussing issuing an excessive heat advisory. the

of gains since the federal reserve gave a timetable for throttling back its economic stimulus a week ago. here's a look at the closing numbers. the dow jones jumped 150 points to close at 14,910. \ the nasdaq closed up 28 points, ending the day at 3,376. the s and p rose 15 points, closing at 1,603. investment banking firm goldman sachs is flying a rainbow flag outside its wall street headquarters. within hours of the supreme court's ruling on the defense of marriage act, the company tweeted "we strongly support the court's affirmation today of marriage equality." goldman joined hundreds of companies including starbucks, apple, google and citigroup. that filed a brief with the supreme court in opposition to doma. 7-million college students will likely have to pay more for their loans come july first. congress is working on a deal to prevent a 100 percent hike in subsudized student loan interest rates. but a final agreement probably won't come until after lawmakers return from the july fourth recess.
