a historic day for the supreme court as they struck down prop 8 and the defense of marriage act. this prop 8 decision is the ruling that most legal experts predicted. the supreme court cleared the way for same sex marriage to resume in california in a 5 to 4 decision. the majority of the justices said that supporters of prop 8 did not have the right to appeal a lower courts ruling. they also said the majority of prop 8 supporters were not able to show how they were harmed by same sex marriage. this means gay marriage is expected to resume in california in 25 days. the supreme court did not make a broad ruling about whether banning same sex marriage is constitutional. that could have had a more wide ranging impact across the country. there was a huge turnout for the celebration in san francisco's castro district last night. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc 7 news.

the rally was organized by a coalition advocacy groups including "marriage equality usa, "march-4- equality", and "unite here local 2" kron 4 caught up with supporters of same sex marriage who say the overturn of prop 8 is a breath of fresh air after so many years of struggle. same-sex marriage supporters also gathering in oakland for a block party to celebrate the u-s supreme opinions on same- sex marriage. hundreds showed up on telegraph avenue at 19th near the art sculpture park to listen to music. a woman legally licensed to perform marriage ceremonies was on hand. she married at least five couples, although the marriages were symbolic and are not yet legally binding. people who have been a part of the fight for marriage equality say this day has been a long time coming. the block party continued through eight o'clock in the evening. then after- parties in oakland followed. supporters of the prop 8 ban did not protest the event. in other big bay area news.

>> if she was married to a man, she would not have all that man. the decision impact's income factors. married same-sex couples cannot file taxes jointly like all married couples. that means saving thousands of dollars. their health insurance, federal employees with same-sex marriages will now be granted benefits and for private employees if it means that partners won't have to pay income taxes on benefits from the other partner's health insurance plans. finally, the death benefits. at same sex couples will now get federal tax treatment and social security benefits that opposite sex couples get when a spouse dies. same- sex marriages only legal in 12 states and washington

he was elected that nation's first black president in 1994. he has been battling a recurring lung infection for a long while. aaron hernandez has become a former member of the new england patriots after becoming a guest of the massachusetts penal system. hernandez pleaded not guilty after being arrested and charged with murder in the in the shooting death of odin lloyd, a semi-pro football player whose body was found about a mile from hernandez's home. prosecutors say lloyd had angered hernandez at a nightclub a few days earlier by talking to the wrong people. authorities say hernandez drove lloyd to a secluded gravel road before shooting him multiple times. the patriots released the tight end less than two hours after his arrest and before he was charged. hernandez could get life in prison without parole if convicted. a florida businessman who says he was held hostage by his own workers in china has been freed. chip starnes, co-founder and president of specialty medical supplies china, says he'd been unable to leave the company's beijing factory since friday.

excessive heat is on the way. we are talking about six consecutive days of severely hot weather. temperatures will be in the '90s if not the triple digits. we will see sunshine but it will be a scorcher out there. take a look at saturday and sunday and even temperatures into monday expected to be the warmest day of the week. looks like the national weather service will start to issue some excessive heat advisories and with that, you will certainly want to cool off. good news is seven years on the up to much along the coast line per in the upper 60s and low 70's so if you want relief, definitely had your way to the beaches. gradually cool weather as we had to tuesday and wednesday, but much cooler conditions, partly cloudy skies towards the middle of next week. for 33. here is a traffic out with janu. >>janu: an accident just west of a treasure island. not seeing back up eat right now but we will continue to keep an eye on that for you.

>>mark: will come back to the kron4 morning news. we are watching wall street. taking a look at wall street this morning. futures trading shows all three indexes in the positive this morning. traders are focusing on the positive and that pushed the major wall street stock indexes higher yesterday for a second straight day. it's the first two-day stretch of reserve gave a timetable for throttling back its economic stimulus a week ago. here's a look at the closing numbers. the dow jones jumped 150 points to close at 14,910. \ the nasdaq closed up 28 points, ending the day at 3,376. the s and p rose 15 points, closing at 1,603. with a rainbow flag hanging outside of its wall street headquarters, investment banking firm goldman sachs was quick to express support for wednesday's supreme court decision overturning the defense of marriage act.

courts ruling can file a petition for a re-hearing. >>it definitely should've happened years ago. especially here in california, san francisco. we were doing marriages here quite early, but to have it take til 2013 in united states and in california is a little ridiculous >>mark:it should take about a month for licenses to be available for lesbian and gay couples. clergy from across the bay area showed support for the supreme court decisions. more than sixty religious leaders from a variety of faiths stood together on the steps of san francisco's grace cathedral yesterday afternoon. they say the defeat of prop 8 and doma will allow them to serve everyone in the community equally. a spokesperson for grace cathedral also said they will offer same sex marriages 30 days after the state authorizes the unions. that is the same waiting period that's required of any couple who marries at the cathedral. after the rulings, some republican members of

of gains since the federal reserve gave a timetable for throttling back its economic stimulus a week ago. here's a look at the closing numbers. the dow jones jumped 150 points to close at 14,910. \ the nasdaq closed up 28 points, ending the day at 3,376. the s and p rose 15 points, closing at 1,603. investment banking firm goldman sachs is flying a rainbow flag outside its wall street headquarters. within hours of the supreme court's ruling on the defense of marriage act, the company tweeted "we strongly support the court's affirmation today of marriage equality." goldman joined hundreds of companies including starbucks, apple, google and citigroup. that filed a brief with the supreme court in opposition to doma. 7-million college students will likely have to pay more for their loans come july first. congress is working on a deal to prevent a 100 percent hike in subsudized student loan interest rates. but a final agreement probably won't come until after lawmakers return from the july fourth recess.
