it happened in the tenderloin neighborhood on o'farrell street. just before 10pm an officer saw two groups of men shooting at each other. the officer fired at one of the armed suspects, but did not hit him. police say the suspect fled on foot but eventually caught and arrested. one man was pronounced dead and another was taken to the hospital with life- residents in the area say something needs to be done neighborhood. >> this neighborhood is getting really bad this whole block is really getting screwed up. >> this is what one neighbor has to say appeared >>."that's how it is now" two guns were recovered from the scene. investigation. a developing story this a good samaritan was struck and killed on the freeway when the c-h-p says. he tried to help the victims of another accident. kron 4's mike pelton joins us live near the 280 at the

woodside offramp. mike.this crash shutdown the freeway for hours. >> the chp did shut it down for about three hours this morning after they say a man was struck and killed after he left his a vehicle to help those involved in a separate accident. >> they sent out to 45 a black hawk and the reek rear ended another vehicle, and that's when the driver of the third, got out of his, to help those involved when he was struck and killed by an oncoming car appeared >> this man lost his life trying to do the right thing. >> in time you want to help on the freeway expensive night it is best to just call 911. states one person

"no justice" continue one week after the acquittal of george trayvon martin. demonstrators taking to the steets around the nation and in the bay area. on what was called "national justice for trayvon day." in the bay area demonstrations took place in san francisco and oakland. hundreds rallied in front of the federal building in oakland yesterday afternoon. they want to make sure the death of trayvon martin stays in the forefront of the nations conciousness. city and community leaders attended to support further legal avenues and to underscore that violence will not serve their ends. >>anyone who engages in breaking windows or destroying property at a rally that's for discussing the trayvon martin issues is doing a disservice to the purpose of the rally because meaning. oakland police say protests were peaceful. reported. a rally in san jose is scheduled for later today. the sixth annual peace bike name. this was not a protest. organizers say it was an opportinuty to promote peace in a time of so much unrest. about 70 riders started yesterday afternoon near lake merritt. they ultimately made their

firefighters are making progress in that wildfire burning near idyllwild. it is 49 per-cent contained. but it has burned more than 27-thousand acres. and it continues to threaten homes and force evacuations. bianca rae reports an area congressman visited the burn zone to talk about rebuilding. toured mountain fire. despite clear emotion in his face, he had positive words. >>"we have done an incredible job with the collaboration and communication between the different agencies to keep you safe, the public." with this fire declared a state of emergency, it's now eligible for federal funding. >>"i plan to work aside the agencies to make sure they

oregon finally have a handle this morning on a 500-acre wildfire. it's burning near the town of williams, not far from the california border. extra strike teams arrived overnight to help battle the blaze. it torched a house and several vehicles, and forced the evacuation of 75 homes. the fire's proximity to so many homes has made it a tougher job for firefighters. in line >>instead of just going out and trying to stop the line of the fire. you have property; you have value; you have people coming in and out of the roads, trying to get to their property. it complicates things a whole lot. >> the red cross has set up evacuated resdients. meanwhile, the cause of the wildfire is under investigation. coming up on kron 4 news weekend.the national justice for trayvon day is mostly we'll have the story after the break.

showers and thunder said storms starting on monday. >>two people who survived the movie theater shooting in aurora, colorado, turned the terrifying memory into a positive one yesterday. kirstin davis and eugene han married on the one year anniversary of the shooting rampage. han was shot in the hip and knee, while davis suffered cuts and scratches. they have known each other pulled davis to safety during the terrifying moments inside that theatre one year ago. police say a woman who died while riding a 14-story roller coaster at six flags amusement park in north texas apparently fell from the ride. family members identified her as rosy esparza. it was her first time at six flags. witnesses said before the roller coaster took off

esparza was worried that her lap bar was not secure. safety analyst ken martin is certified to inspect amusement rides in texas. he spoke on the phone about the lap bar regulations. >>"i can with reasonable certainty that there is a policy somewhere on this roller coaster that says you need more than one click on your lap bar. that has got to be written somewhere and if it's not it should be again that just an industry standard." >> arlington police say there appears to have been no foul play. police say the texas department of insurance, which approves amusement rides, is involved in investigating the accident. a texas man faces charges for allegedly holding a group of adults captive. this is walter jones in court. he's facing felony counts of injury to the elderly. police discovered four men, between the ages of 50-to- 80, locked in a houston garage friday. officers believe the men were forced to hand over government aid checks.

four women also discovered in the dungeon-like home owned by jones' grandmother. police are trying to figure out if they were captives. a bond for jones is now set at 200-thousand dollars. further pay cuts and layoffs are likely for the u-s military. furloughs have already forced a 20 percent pay cut on most of the military's civilian workforce of 800- thousand. defense secretary chuck hagel says without congressional action, even more cuts and layoffs are possible. the next budget year begins october first. any action by congress would have to happen by then. serious sexual harassment allegations are still facing san diego mayor bob filner. but so far they are just allegations. still, investigators are preparing case. they have developed a safe and private way for potential victims to come forward with information. a new victims' hotline is available specifically for the filner investigation. when calling, victims will be connected with the central investigations

again on wednesday. >> we're getting a break from eleven straight days of increasing gas prices. and yesterday, triple-a reports the national average of regular unleaded gasoline is unchanged at three-dollars and 72 cents a gallon. it comes after the average price crept up by nine cents week. and it's up 22 cents compared to last year. prices in oakland gas prices are 3.99 a gallon. down in san jose the same as oakland with 3.99 as well. franciso its 4.08 thousand truck and s-u-v tires over deflation concerns. company representatives say the tires made in a south carolina plant may have punctures in their sidewalls. the affected tires include their: l-t-x m-s 2 line, the x-radial l-t-2 line, and the latitude tour tires.

so far there have been no injuries. and only about 25-hundred of the recalled tires may be the company plans to notify customers next week. good news for college students -- the interest rate on student loans won't be doubling after all. but alison kosik explains that the lower rates won't they call it a compromise deal thursday to keep student loan rates low, but only in the short term. the deal comes 2 weeks after congress let interest rates on federally subsidized stafford loans double from 3.4-percent to 6.8-percent. rates are now 3.86-percent for undergrads. grad students will pay 5.4- percent, and parents will pay 6.4-percent. the lower interest rates are retroactive. so if you took out loans after july 1, the newer rates will apply. but there's a catch -- rates will be tied to the interest rate on the 10-year

l-t-x m-s 2 line, the x-radial l-t-2 line, and the latitude tour tires. so far there have been no reports of damage or injuries. and only about 25-hundred of the recalled tires may be affected. good news for college students -- the interest rate on student loans won't but alison kosik explains that the lower rates won't they call it a compromise for a reason. the u-s senate reached a deal thursday to keep student loan rates low, but only in the short term. the deal comes 2 weeks after congress let interest rates on federally subsidized stafford loans double from 3.4-percent to 6.8-percent. rates are now 3.86-percent for undergrads. grad students will pay 5.4- percent, and parents will pay 6.4-percent. retroactive. so if you took out loans after july 1, the newer rates will apply. but there's a catch -- rates will be tied to the interest rate on the 10-year u-s treasury bond, meaning the coming years.
