that story. >> reporter: this is what's left after a single-engine mooney m20 crashed in the woods. pilot steven lefton was flying the plane with his wife karen on board. the el dorado county sherriff's office says the plane lost altitude soon after taking off. it crashed into some large pine trees, flipped over, then banked into a wooded area near the lake tahoe airport. the couple's neighbor jerry brenholz says the two were avid travellers. >> sometimes he'd ask me hey jerry wanna fly with me? but im always hesitant with single engine planes. it's tragic you know. >> reporter:karen was pinned inside an off-duty nurse spotted the wreckage while walking her dog. she provided aid and comfort until medics arrived. steven died on impact. karen --- who sustained moderate injuries--- was rushed to a hospital in reno - and is expected to survive. >>very very nice people. really wonderful. they really enjoyed lifethey were just always happy.
