sergeant - ty carter - who grew up in the bay area, will receive the medal of honor in august. the recognition. the white house says, the honor is for carter's courageous actions during a daylong battle in afghanistan on october 3, 2009. in a mountain combat outpost where u.s. troops were far outnumered. the army says carter killed enemy troops, re-supplied ammunition to american fighters, rendered first aid and risked his own life to save an injured soldier. carter's father. talked with kron four's phillippe djegal from his home in antioch, where his family is celebrating. >>with close friends at the table. mark carter and his wife barb, lift a glass and say a toast in honor of staff sergeant ty carter. since high school, mark carter says his 33-year-old son has been in the armed services. first serving four years with the u-s marines. the rest of his time with the army. >> sot- mark carter/father

>> friday's evening commute was impacted by several big concerts and events. including a bomb scare on the bay bridge that briefly prompted a shut down. video of the device is from our helicopter partnership with a-b-c 7 news. it was found around 1 p-m on the treasure island off ramp on east bound 80. you can see a bomb squad robot picking up the suspicious device. eventually. they determined the device was harmless. and the bridge and the onramp were reopened about 45 minutes later. there's no word yet on what the device was but an investigation is underway. no bail for a san pablo mother. facing charges in an accident that killed her 5- entered a not guilty plea friday to multiple felony charges. the may 20th accident happened on richmond parkway near hilltop drive. myers' s.u.v. rolled over, injuring three other children, in addition to her 5-year-old. this is video of the crash from our helicopter

transported to the hospital to make sure they were medically ok we are not sure when the last time they had eaten, at least 2 days. this all began to unfold wednesday. a manager at this store across from the street from the hotel tells kron four news a woman ran in on wednesday claiming she was in trouble, that men where holding her hostage. he gave her the phone and she called police. however, when police arrived, she admitted to being high on drugs - and then they found her children. she is being evaluated. she may face charges of abandonment and drugs. police say child protective services has taken custody of the 2 boys - as well as 2 girls. a 13 year old dauaghter was found later. she had been out with relatives when police took

her 3 siblings to the hospital. authorities say what is particularly alarming is that this may not have been the first time these children were left alone, especially since they seemed unphazed by their situation. they are good, which is good and bad. it gives impression that this is the not the first time they have gone without food. police are declining to rele ase the name of the woman in an effort to protect the children. they plan to call in specialists to interview the kids in hopes of finding out more about what has been going on in the past. in hayward, family of a teenage girl killed in the asiana airlines crash are speaking out. and blaming firefighters. 16-year-old ye meng-yuan was killed by a fire truck after the crash. her family's lawyer says *multiple firefighters knew ye was placed in harm's way on the tarmac. fatal injuries before the truck hit her on july 6th. reports say the firefighter's truck was not properly equipped with body- detecting technology. a national fire protection

the grief was unbearable for family members finding out hialeah apartment complex friday night. swat units were called after people dead. officers say a search of the complex turned up more bodies, including one believed hit by a stray bullet. investigators say the swat team moved in when the gunman barricaded himself inside a unit holding two people hostage. tactical forces rescued the two and say when the gunman engaged them in a shootout the suspect was killed. shots and so i went outside and my neighbors were screaming about my parents had been shot." police are trying to determine the motive and say the names of those involved. coming up on kron 4 news weekend live look outside. bay bridge police are still searching deadly train derailment. the train on friday they searched the train company's offices. it is not known what they are looking for in the and atlantic railway. this comes after the lac- megantic mayor blamed the rail company for failing to pay clean-up costs in a timely manner. the train was parked and the engineer went to a hotel on july 6-th.

police are still searching for answers in canada's deadly train derailment. nearly 50 people died after the train crashed and exploded july 6th near quebec. on friday authorities in montreal searched the train company's offices. it's unclear what they were looking for. but this comes after canadian lawmakers blamed the rail company for failing to pay clean-up costs in a timely manner. authorities are now holding the conductor in spain's deadly train crash. on suspicion of negligent homicide. 78 people are confirmed dead after wednesday's crash. the conductor, francisco garzon amo, previously bragged on facebook about reaching high speeds. but after the crash, he said - quote - i *want to die. he has been discharged from a hospital and taken to a police station. railway officials say it was his responsibility to brake high-risk curve.
