labor day it is its official, labor day weekend will mark the transition from the old span of the bay bridge to the new 6-billion dollar structure. a lot has to happen between now and then. we have complete details. good morning and thanks for joining us on this friday i'm james fletcher. we now know when the new span of the bay bridge will open. which also means a full closure to get it ready. officials will shut down the bridge the night of august 28th to transition the old span to the new one. the new span is set to open the day after labor day, which is september 3rd.

across. >>steve heminger/m.t.c. executive director:we've got two structures out onto that bridge so that they can be safe as they travel. the majority of the work is done and what remains is finish work. some lights need to be hung, some painting needs to get done and the stripes need to be layed onto the roadway. the biggest task for workers is getting the old connector ramps torn down

and the new ones put into place. bridge officials say the labor day target was when they were hoping to open all along. >> a lot of planning had already been done. a lot of events had already been moved away from that weekend and having lighter traffic that weekend increased our chances of success because it is going to be a lot easier to get trucks and construction equipment to the bridge if you don't have as much traffic on the roads. during the bay bridge closure during the labor day weekend, commuters have some alternative routes they can take.

the most popular options for drivers to get across san francisco bay will probably be the richmond san rafael bridge and golden gate bridge to the north and the san mateo bridge to the south. also, transporation officials are asking drivers to take public transportation or adjust commute times. caltrans will open the new eastern span of the bay bridge before the morning commute on tuesday september 3rd no doubt traffic will be a mess while the bay bridge is shut down. even over a holiday weekend. and bart says it will be ready to step up service when the bay bridge is closed. that includes running trains around the clock all of the updated schedules for bart will be available at bart dot org and stay with kron 4 as we provide continuing coverage of the bay bridge closure, and opening of the new span. you can also get the latest on our 24/7 channel on comcast 193, as well as kron 4 dot com.

following developing news out of oakland this morning, where a woman has been killed in a shooting, while another man is recovering in the hospital. the shooting happened last night around 11:30 in the 800 block of 100th avenue. the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. the man has been taken to the hospital. his condition remains unknown at this time. police are still searching for a gunman. the motive for the shooting is not known at this hour. an update now on a story we first brought you yesterday morning. police have released the surveillance photo showing the white chevy trailblazer that thieves used to get away after backing into and buglarizing a tiffany's store in walnut creek. four suspects used a stolen pickup truck and crashed through the front door of the store before six yesterday morning. officers say the thieves were only able to break into one jewelry case and unable to get to the high end merchandise in the overnight safe. a bold burglary at the tiffany's store in the east bay. suspects backed a pickup truck through the front doors. and took everything they could. kron 4's j-r stone reports from walnut creek. watching wall street this morning. warnings of weaker sales from two major companies and concern that the federal reserve will soon start withdrawing its support for the economy sent the stock market tumbling yesterday. here's a look at the closing numbers. the dow jones lost 225 points-- it's worst day in two months. the nasdaq fell 63.

but it in update on our weather around the bay. air travel with that. good morning erica. >>erica: the morning happy friday. we are starting with of the condition. low clouds compared to yesterday. we in some coastal drizzle but expect near seasonal temperatures as we head into the afternoon. cooler conditions. we do have unsettled weather and the extended forecast. the possibility for some thunderstorms as we head into next week. i will have full details on what to expect coming up in just a couple of minutes. right now let's take a look at temperatures with, all that is in livermore. all '70s right now for those of you in antioch and waking up to upper '70s inside the bay. a

warming inside the eighties for livermore and a bunch of communities in the south bay. later on today, your afternoon highs. it looks like 90s just border the bay area and i don't think we will seek to many today. we could see one or two in brentwood or walnut creek. potential to hit 90 decree territory for it as we have into the evening hours and about 8:00 tonight, temperatures back on the mild side. we are seen widespread 60s and low 70's. recondite afternoon highs, you will notice cooler than yesterday temperatures. temperatures are however pretty close to where they should be. looks like mostly sunny skies into the afternoon. 90s on the board for pittsburgh. upper 80s for those of you in concord. downtown's san francisco

expecting afternoon high of 66 degrees. upper 60s for berkeley, low 80s for napa. your extended forecast highlights a 10% chance for thunderstorms. as we head into sunday night and monday morning. looks like any activity we do see will be north of the golden gate bridge and for the east bay anterior spots. with that, expect warmer weather. and when highest climbing into the '90s. a little bit of wet weather arriving into the middle of next week. we will continue to monitor this for you. and of course we will have a better idea as we move in closer to next week. taking a look at traffic around the bay area. a great ride around the bay area. no problems and no worries 3 off to a great start as your approach to the bay bridge toll plaza.

the bombing was the second in over a month to hit the area. many people in lebanon think the attacks are retaliation for hezbollah's armed support for syrian president bashar assad. the egyptian military forces are sweeping across carol- judge cairo and ongoing efforts to disperse staged sedans in support of ousted former president mohamed morsy. hundreds have died, thousands more have been injured in recent days in the bloody clashes between protesters and security forces. cairo and several other cities remained under curfew. president obama and several prominent u.s. lawmakers have condemned the actions of each of its interim government. the president canceled joint

for just a dollar each. every day. ♪ we now know when the new eastern span of the bay bridge will be completely it will be on september 3rd. kron four's mike pelton is live at treasure island with an update. hi mike. >>: will james officials pegged september 3rd as the target date for the past several years but that was put in jeopardy after 32 both on the bridge failed earlier this year calling the bridge assignment and stability and the question of engineers say they have a temporary solution set and ready to go to still allows the bridge to open over labor day weekend. the temporary solution involves placing a large steel plate

called a chance into four bridge bearing to enhance its seismic stability. the permanent fix 8 satellite retrofit of the bridge will be completed in december but officials say outside engineering firms and support the temporary fix that allows the bridge to open at 5:00 a.m. on september 3rd. bridge officials say even though its opening with just a temporary solution in place commuters should not have concerns. >>: we've got to instructors out their side by side and there is no contest between which one is safer. the old brick is not safe in the event of a major earthquake. we have a problem with the boat that's for sure. that is a real problem and we are fixing it. we are fabricating the shins we are putting in place are a way to get that structure open sooner. i think the story is ending well. but i think the road to get here was far too long and far too winding. >>: in order to open up the

new eastern spanish officials first need to close down the entire bay bridge street the bridge will close a p.m. on wednesday august 28th and reopen on tuesday september 3rd at 5:00 in the morning. cruzado's five days in order to connect the bridge as well as finished up some painting and writing work. officials would also like you to help spread the word and let everyone know that the bridge will be shut down for those five days because even though this is happening over a holiday weekend is likely to become a traffic nightmare after more than 10 years under construction, the new span will finally open to traffic. back to you.

two men have been sentenced for their roles of the gang rape of a 1616 year-old girl outside a major--richmond high school back in 2009. merciless peter and held that montano were both convicted of sexual charges. the judge sentenced the suspects to 27 and 29 years. to life in jail. a statement from the victim's father was read during the sentencing. two other men have already been convicted in the attack and two other trials are pending. the attack happened outside richmond high school during a homecoming dance. the teenager was beat and robbed and sexually abused all as many as 20 people watched.
